Another great video. I Lost a £15 customer on Thursday and replaced her with a £25 customer today. I told myself that Rob would charge £25 so I quoted £25 and she said yes. Winner winner chicken dinner. 👍
Great video Rob. Just discovered your channel. I've run my own gardening business for 14 years. I used to have trouble with waste disposal especially as I live in a flat with no garden so nowhere to store waste till I have a van full. Most of my customers now have a garden waste bin so I have a network of bins to use. I ensure everyone's bin is full on collection day. Last year the bin service was paused due to lack of hgv drivers so I had to resort to recycling everything. I used my old honda mower with mulching plug and recycled the grass clippings back into the lawn and mulched the hedge cuttings with the mower. I also bought a forest master chipper which has come in very useful for the thicker stuff. I didn't take any waste away all season. Looking forward to your next video.
Hi Rob when I was in the business I had a chipper driven by a strong petrol engine but was easy to wheel about and use to chip up loads of pruning etc and I always left what was chipped on site as a mulch.I never paid once in 8 years to get rid of arisings.
Hi Rob, if you're buying a chipper make sure the chute is wide enough at the bottom.I made the mistake and bought one and it was getting blocked in the chute and it's bloody loud. Bad investment for me only used a few times. I only generate a lot of waste when I'm doing hedge cuts and garden tidy ups. Nothing wrong with cut blow and go jobs you're still providing a garden service so you're a gardener. I'm 54 this year fully booked again with maintenance but I (my back) don't like weeding. With regards to roller mower it makes the lawns you cut stand out, but finding the right one is a minefield. I started full on this week, good luck with your season ahead 👍
Great tip Rob! I definitely agree with the holiday, I'll be taking a week out in May time I've only got a small chipper but it really helps on the bigger jobs, you'll be amazed at how many bags you can reduce just by mulching the waste!
WL Straughns at bedlington in £15 per small van load also I go to suez went this morning full combo load big thick branches, conifer waste etc £4.65 got to be a suez next to you I'm only at ashington
I mybe missing out on some cash.. but I don't take waste away most of my customers have a garden bin or somewhere to compost it if there's to much for the bin I fill a ton bag and leave it there then just filter it into the bin on next visits or I black bag it up... worked for me so far 🤞👍🍻
Good to see you again Rob. I hope your well rested for your oncoming year ahead.! Maybe there would be some home owners that would like to keep the mulch to use themselves on their borders, I know I would. That's a win / win. Take care buddy.
Thanks for another good video Rob, keep them coming mate. Personally, I've been in the lawn business for donkeys years and I wouldn't be spending out on a chipper when you can't always leave the mulch (chips) on site and you end up taking them to the green waste site anyway! If you think it would make you more money then crack on mate, you know your clientele best. Good luck bud.
Rob I have the solution to your rear roller issue I know exactly what you need......... A BIGGER VAN. Especially if you do get a chipper. It'll mean less trips to the tip too.
Good tip Rob. I pay a flat £10 at the place where I go, and I don't go on the weighbridge because my van is of a certain size. So, whatever I can squeeze into my VW T5, that is the price. I reckon I can get 6 dumpy bags in there (very full) and I also stuff a load of smaller bags in as well. The thing about having a chipper is that you will have to carry it around everywhere, and then you will spend time feeding it with rubbish, so it will take a bit of working out if it will be worth having one. I didn't see the link to the green waste site in your description btw.
The chipper is a great idea and you might be able to sell the clippings for mulch etc to allotment folk. An old mower is good for reducing some hedge cuttings on site
All these videos are a great help, thinking on starting up on my own full time here in Northern Ireland, been watching all the videos the last few days, thanks for your service in the armed forces to Rob, take care regards Daniel.
Hi Rob Most of my customers have a “green bin” and those that don’t I am lucky enough to be able to share those that do and they don’t mind if I use theirs when I am doing their work. With regards to the chipper, one of the best bits of kit I have ever bought. What would have been a van full is reduced to nothing, and more to the point you can spread it around the beds. Which looks good and is a benefit to the quality of the soil. Michael The Really Useful Gardening Co Essex PS if you want to know what I bought and use let me know 👍
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices Hi Rob I use a Forest Master 6.5hp with the electric start. It’s brilliant, like most people I took the feed guard out ( I know you’re not supposed to) but I have found that if it fits it will chip. It’s saved me so much time and rubbish removal. It was so worth the money. If you pay a little extra they will ship it complete so you don’t have to put it together yourself. Also I paid for it in 3 payments via PayPal which doesn’t cost any extra, but takes the “sting” out of the purchase price Regards Michael
As some of the others have said. Those little forest masters are brilliant. I was sceptical I be honest. But they are light enough to pick up and lift up a wall or stairs and best thing is they are direct drive. No belt
I bought a forest master petrol chipper rob it's small but it's a game changer for reducing the dumpy bags it's the 6hp power one saves dragging the bigger one I have around cheers for the info on the chesterlrr street waste dump I'm only 10 mins up the road 👍
Quality Rob, My new chipper arrived today Forest master FM6DDES watched Sam @jayrock reviewing on his channel & liked what i saw & took the plunge. Also thought Berlingo's were 3 seaters? surely a couple more bags could've gone on those extra seats😆
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices Hi Rob. It fits into the corner of my vauxhall combo. You will be able to fit a mower and a tonne bag in the van along side it. Great little chipper
Weight up time and energy to push waste through a little chipper compared to chuck in the van and dump. I consider my greenmech small, it's capable but has limits...I need another month before the grass starts to push up too much😬 Always take a holiday, burn out happens all too often in this game. Take care 👍
I’m really lucky. I live on a farm and I just dump my waste in the yard or round the back somewhere until the Mrs tells me to get it all shifted then I compost it or chip it and reuse it all. The sheep do love a bit of fresh cut grass too!
onya Rob always looking to improve .. love that . Years ago we did a lot of garden clearances and I did invest in a chipper and offered the chips as mulch . The only trouble with that the green waste needs to cure as placing green mulch on the garden beds sucks too much out of it , so I was finding myself either taking it away or leaving it at the clients place in a heap i till cured . A lot of the time i was taking the chips to the tip as I didn’t have the time to store it and then sell it , besides unless you have an expensive chipper to give quality size mulch it’s pretty much useless on the commercial market . So what I have been doing over the years is working out the tip fee and the time involved and then change back to the client . For ease of calculating I have a set fee eg one ute load high $ 200 or low 125 etc . Normal mowing jobs most times use their bin but others get a surcharge ti take grass away , so even tip runs are billable .
Wise words from the master. Thanks Geoff. The grass cutting season is just getting started the phone is ringing but I am full. Fingers crossed for a good season. All the best and I look forward to seeing more videos from you soon.
In my opinion a chipper would be a good investment as it avoids you having to use as many dump bags taking up space. The more equipment and tools you have, the more you have to offer!
Funny but have been busy since early December, mainly on fences! One person's pain is another gain really. Just drive round Wallsend or Whitley Bay and work appeared! Will deffo check out the place in Chester le Street. Cheers Rob.
I can't say I'm even a gardener but saying that lol I think the chipper is a grate idea, we are just about to buy a house, and we will have a garden at last ! And I was thinking if makeing my own compost ect chipper is definitely something I hope to get in time saves all that waste and re use it. Love that I know the cancal rips your arm off to them to take it, but have you thort of taken it in a car as they don't charge for cars only vans ? Bit sneaky but if it works it works lol
Maybe you could use a chipper to break down some of the better waste to make good mulch for the benefit of the customer. Take the rest away. I think it looks professional too from the customers point of view. You’re a good talker 👍 (get the chipper)
Hi Rob. I’ve found a bio-mass plant that will take my grass cuttings. They are happy of the free fuel to help generate electricity!! The rest of mine goes to green waste.
Good video Rob. I always assumed Charleton only did fencing and I've just come accross their green waste service. It's only 10 mins from me so I'll definitely be using them. Is it an easy process when you're there?
Maybe consider investing in a bigger van (something like a Transit Custom......I wonder why I mentioned that one???) and then you could get more bags tipped at your £20 per van load tipping place. Plus you can fit more machinery in it......and that mower you mentioned would have easily fit in a Transit Custom (or something similar).....ANY mower would to be honest ! There's no specific gardening situation that I can think of where a smaller van would have been more useful.......food for thought. Have a good season......tick tock ! PEACE.
Hi rob yeah a chipper expensive I thought about getting one this season to get the waste done quarter. Nearly got one last season still abit like you what to do. Have you got some new customers and lost any you said that may be the case. I cant wait to start grass cutting myself it’s seems a while ago when stopped. Glad you are busye and yeah I normally have a holiday in June going for 10 days this year you need a break and I’m normally working 7 days with one off jobs and hedge and fencing work at the weekends. Look forward to your next video 👍
My only concern Rob is if you would be disappointed at the Honda shredder at the low end of £500 and you would be better and get a more better deal and less down time spending more on a machine that has no problem dealing with the waste that you are asking from it. I made many mistakes when starting up with buying cheap tools to do a commercial job it doesn’t work and costs You more in long run on breakdowns and buying the correct tool after you given up on it. What is the shredder you are thing of buying ? All the best
I've got an allotment and mulch around the plot under fruit trees, especially grass breaks down very quick. I've made massive composters out of old pallets for bigger bits. Branches etc don't really make good compost, try and stick those in the brown bin.
I charge my customer £1.50 per black bin bag of garden waste to dispose of or put it in there wheelie bin .lawn care companies never take waste when they scarifiy lawns they leave it behind in black bags for the customer to dispose of .builder's never take away rubbish they get a skip and charge it to the customers.
Thanks for watching and your comment. To say lawn care companies don’t take waste away is a sweeping statement. I take waste away as do many other companies. Pleased your system works for you. Have a great season.
Thanks for the tip Rob, after watching and messaging you, and the great advice you gave me I've started my gardening business. Wishing you every success. Keith from Smiley Gardens.
Rob don't listen to the negative comments about blow and go. There's a lot of customers who can only afford a grass cut and a strim. Not many people can afford to have a gardener 4 hours a week. Look after yourself take care.
I did not want to spend out thousands, so I bought a cobra instead; I can't fault it. But chippers are only good at branches you can mix in green though. It eats conifers 😃
Hi rob I have been thinking about starting a garden business that’s how I have found your videos. Your videos have given me a great insight into how a garden business should be ran much appreciated 👍
Thanks Alex, your comment has made my day. I am not about being the best gardener. It’s about my journey and trying to help others. Good luck with your business and let me know how you get on.👍🏻
Hi Rob have you sorted yourself a rear roller mower yet , I sold my old 2019 48 pro , It was hopeless in the wet and long grass, but along with the stihl mower I've purchased the new hayter 41 Pro probably a bit narrow for you ? But I've found so far a vast improvement
Hello David. I haven’t as yet. I am now looking at the Honda hrx 476 rear roller. I have looked at many 21 inch mowers . Too heavy and too big for the van . All the best.
with a chipper you have to balance out how much time it takes to feed everything into the chipper compared with the savings by using a chipper. Luckily I use a big van so dont need a chipper Yes dont forget your holidays
We have a place near Lincoln that takes green waste, £25 a van full, I charge customers £40 per job, they all seem very happy with the price, I save it up till I have a van full and make a few quid for the service, I also bought a hornet chipper last week, used it to chip up a 20 foot high conifer (not the logs) worked like a little star, didn't block once 😀, you just have to learn it's limitations
I stopped taking rubbish away a couple years ago now , down here in Surrey you need a waste carrier licence to take green waste to a council site and private run waste transfer station most of my big jobs deal with their own rubbish or burn up on site , plus some customers moan about the charge at the tip and my time taking it
I bought a Cobra chipper. Because council wouldn't leave my trailer into dump. They won't allow anything over 8 foot. Mine being 13 ft. So got the chipper. Great machine, but time consuming as Lewis garden services said.
It's simple you don't know until you have a chipper the pro and cons but for me in the winter tidies up it's good because your not always pruning massive trees. It's does for all your shrub cuts etc. Plus you could fit in your van and during the summer if someone as could you prune up a tree or shrub you can put throw the chipper instead of coming back at a later date just for that job
Any advice on a commercial site of 10 acres for grass cutting? Not a clue how to price or even if I could cope. I’m a self employed gardener on my own with only a push mower
That’s a big site Matt. Try £60 an acre. As long as it’s weekly. Buy a decent second hand John deer ride on. Good luck with it . Let me know how you get on . 👍🏻
A lawn is usually about 80+% of a garden. So if that's all you do then your more of a gardener than someone who only deals with the remaining 20%. Borders / flowers. Garden waste. £25 a van load by me. Can't grumble at that. Chipper. Good to have but officially you need a ticket to use one I think. Plus you got storage and transport issues. If you put it in your van you'll have no room for anything else. If you tow it. Then that's the price of a tow bar getting fitted to your van. It all adds up. Difficult call. I'm sticking with £25 for a van load of waste. A lot less hassle for me
I chip some stuff at home(too big to cart round would need to empty van) but to be honest taking it too charleton chips is the way ahead alot of the stuff I need to get rid of is slow difficult to put through chipper block it up if you have nice straight branches they are ideal. I am normmaly dispposing of moss/ auckward bits of vines hedges leaves shrubs difficult too chip shredd wack it all in trailer until it fills up then emty it on rainy day
You was talking about a chipper mate have a look at the Cobra chipper I find them better than the hornet one never again will I go back to a hornet chipper after owning a cobra one
Thanks for watching and your comment Darth. I am no window cleaner it’s a skill I don’t have. I also couldn’t fit it in during the summer. It’s an all year round job. All the best.

I've got an allotment and mulch around the plot under fruit trees, especially grass breaks down very quick. I've made massive composters out of old pallets for bigger bits. Branches etc don't really make good compost, try and stick those in the brown bin.
A great plan. Thanks for sharing. All the best/
I am really pleased for you Keith. I wish you well for the season. Let me know how you get on.
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices thanks Rob, I’ll keep you posted
Rob don't listen to the negative comments about blow and go. There's a lot of customers who can only afford a grass cut and a strim. Not many people can afford to have a gardener 4 hours a week. Look after yourself take care.
A great comment, thank you .
I did not want to spend out thousands, so I bought a cobra instead; I can't fault it. But chippers are only good at branches you can mix in green though. It eats conifers 😃
Thanks for watching and your comment Darren. All the best .
I've had a petrol chipper for 5 years and it replaced a corded e!ectrical that lasted 2 years so I wouldn't be without one a good investment
Thanks Paul, nice to know.
Good luck with your business and let me know how you get on.👍🏻
Have a look at a forest master 6.5 hp chipper, best thing i ever did was get one,i chip straight into borders when i can
I will, thanks Andrew. All the best.
Luckily I use a big van so dont need a chipper
Yes dont forget your holidays
Thanks Phil, sound advice. All the best.
Thanks Mark, I have been looking at the hornet. All the best.
Where the place near Lincoln please ?
I stopped taking rubbish away a couple years ago now , down here in Surrey you need a waste carrier licence to take green waste to a council site and private run waste transfer station most of my big jobs deal with their own rubbish or burn up on site , plus some customers moan about the charge at the tip and my time taking it
Your right David we all need a waste carrier licence. They are free and without complication. Had mine sine the start. Good luck for the season.
I bought a Cobra chipper. Because council wouldn't leave my trailer into dump. They won't allow anything over 8 foot. Mine being 13 ft. So got the chipper. Great machine, but time consuming as Lewis garden services said.
Thanks Robert , appreciate your comment.👍🏻
It's simple you don't know until you have a chipper the pro and cons but for me in the winter tidies up it's good because your not always pruning massive trees. It's does for all your shrub cuts etc. Plus you could fit in your van and during the summer if someone as could you prune up a tree or shrub you can put throw the chipper instead of coming back at a later date just for that job
Great advice , thanks Rob. All the best for the season.
A lot less hassle for me
Sound advice as always Gary. Thanks for watching and your comment. All the best for the new season.
Charlton offers free tipping of chipped material I think... could be wrong on that. Perhaps something to think about though. 👍
I will ask, thanks for watching and your comment.
Cheers rob 👍
Thanks Carl.👍🏻
I chip some stuff at home(too big to cart round would need to empty van) but to be honest taking it too charleton chips is the way ahead alot of the stuff I need to get rid of is slow difficult to put through chipper block it up if you have nice straight branches they are ideal. I am normmaly dispposing of moss/ auckward bits of vines hedges leaves shrubs difficult too chip shredd wack it all in trailer until it fills up then emty it on rainy day
Thanks Mark, great advice. All the best.
£20 a van load?! Thats decent mate!👍
Actually it’s gone up to £25, made the video before I off loaded. Still good value. All the best.
There is a green waste tip at chopwel . Same price
Thanks John, good to know. All the best.
Yes I have holidays as I have e school age kids. A whole lot of cash last in August though 😕.
Your right Jason. Worth it though. All the best.
Rob, I'm in similar shoes. May be worth finding some local hire companies for the chipper. Hire before buying.
Great shout, I will have a look. 👍🏻
If you are on hourly rate then work away with a chipper, if however you price jobs then get it cut, in the trailer and into the dump.
Sound advice thanks very much all the best.
the place I go charges £20 for a full van and trailer
That’s good value, all the best.
You was talking about a chipper mate have a look at the Cobra chipper I find them better than the hornet one never again will I go back to a hornet chipper after owning a cobra one
Thanks for watching and your comment. I take on board what your saying and I will have a look. 👍🏻
Where can I get the dumpy bags though?
Facebook marketplace. They are very cheap.
Already started cutting grass anick Grange hexham is a green tipper aswell not council
Good for you mate, it has been very mild.
Great I charge £50 and I pay £20 I'm in the Northwest
Good for you David, all the best.
I always take the same 8 days off every June
Good for you Warren. All the best for 2022.
Same to you Rob
why don't you upsell your existing customers on Window cleaning for the winter season
Thanks for watching and your comment Darth. I am no window cleaner it’s a skill I don’t have. I also couldn’t fit it in during the summer. It’s an all year round job. All the best.
Enjoy your videos Rob, I’m a gardener in Essex. I get charged £25 for my Movano.
Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks Ben. Good luck for the new season.👍🏻
I have week of May and end of August. Going work 5 days. Going invest mini chipper Going invest crytec which chips. 4" ins
Sounds great Darren. All the best.
Can you not hire one for a spell and see how that goes before committing to buying one
Colin , great advice. I might just do that the next time I have a big hedge to do. A bit of research.
The little forestmaster has the same hp as the small hornet but it's seems to chip a lot better.
Thanks Brian, nice to know. All the best.
Don't have hoilday
I am too old not to. 👍🏻
