Church Completes Major Microfilm Digitization Initiative

- Billions of historical family history records are available to the public with the completion of a microfilm digitization initiative by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
“This is a really incredible milestone,” said Joseph Monsen, director of preservation services for the Church History Department. “For 83 years, the Church has been collecting and using microfilm records to support genealogical research. … 2.4 million rolls of microfilm are all digitally saved now and available.”
The family history records can now be accessed by anyone who has a computer and internet connection.

I can imagine this is nothing short of a miracle for all involved and the many souls who will benefit from the access to these records! Amazing!
I remember as a small boy in the late seventies watching my grandparents doing family history work using microfilm. How slowly the process was. Now we are moving forward in the digital age. What a blessing! The work is moving forward thanks to the service of these wonderful people. Words cannot express enough, thank you so very much!

I worked in the Granite Mountain Record Vault in 2005 when they were just beginning this effort. The numbers are mind-boggling. Congratulations!

I spent some time working on this project back in the early days. It's a wonderful and exciting thing!
A gazillion years ago (over 60) my mom & others used to write things in index cards. What happened with those cards?
I remember my brother writing things like "my mother doesn't have a belly button" and "my mother drinks Pepsi".
I think they were supposed to help people find others researching names.
I was really young.

Wow exciting times
I'm often frustrated by modern technology, but I thank Father in Heaven for giving us amazing technology in these latter days!
To think that in the time of Joseph Smith, the mode of transportation was by horse and buggy, and steam locomotives; the only lighting for homes and other buildings was lantern or candles. Once the church was organized, technology seriously increased, at a mind-boggling pace!

as someone who started her journey with family history work back when microfilm and microfiche were the standard, it is amazing to me that I can do research and help others from the comfort of my own computer screen!

no! 🙂 this just gives us more records that we can index!
MannessDC. No, it just means the original 2.4 million rolls of microfilm are digitized only. It still needs to be indexed and reviewed. Now the church can move on with LIVE records. A big accomplishment regardless.
