I always likened those guys more to The heralds of galactus, since they were the servants of a planet eater, had floating boards, and one even had a big axe.
One thing I never liked about the Tick episode is that ending joke with Ben cleaning the rust bucket. Like... Ben did literally nothing to deserve that punishment. Yeah, he was kinda bratty at the beginning about nature like any 10 year-old is and maybe they were trying to prevent him from getting a big head since this was the first time he directly saved the Earth but... HE JUST SAVED THE EARTH! And then Max and Gwen force him to clean a slime covered RV while they relax on lounge chairs?! That alone should have given Characterization a 1.
I remember this was brought back in one one the alien force picture books where Ben had to clean Kevin's car, then Kevin had to clean his own car. Interesting callback.

well ebcause that's ben in the pilot seat and he's...not very smart. It's kinda why he tends to rpefer using fourarms and diamondbolt, as their strength are more understandable and easy for him, while other aliens like ghostfreak are less apealing to him because he needs to think more about their powers.
By Omniverse, I hated the Mistransformations with a burning passion. Mostly from that Humungousaur joke in the first season. Mistrsnsformation are overused to the point that the new Omnitrix seems inferior to the old Omnitrix and the Ultimatrix.

Honestly, Lt.Steel not believing Ben while he's Diamondhead makes some sense. If Kevin has been running around switching between aliens to try and frame Ben for a while, he must have used Diamondhead at some point too
Exactly and he's more pissed off at Diamondhead than all the other aliens so I’d assume he and his men fought him before offscreen, furthermore I wouldn't be surprised if Kevin as Diamondhead would have done something before as severe as trying to destroy the GG bridge. It would have been cool to see a more in-depth to that news report with the crimes and linking them to steel
The reason Ben unlocked Cannonbolt is because as stated in the "EVERYTHING THE OMNITRIX CAN DO" video,the omnitrix acts as a backdrive in case any alien species go extinct. The omnitrix became aware of this and unlocked Cannonbolts DNA to be used
Every alien in the Omnitrix itself is also on Primus so for all we know Azimuth could've started cloning Cannonbolt's species and looking for a suitable replacement planet when he found out about it's planet getting destroyed.
Two points: 1. It was weird that Steel didn't become a recurring character. The dude could've made a good plumber himself. 2. It was also weird Max was okay leaving Phil in the Null Void in this series. Especially since he seemed to regret that choice later in Omniverse.
There's no jail in the Null Void? I could see locking people away in an interdimensional Alcatraz since even if someone escaped it would be a death sentence.

I don't find it an issue that the rest of Ben's aliens couldn't beat the tick. To me it doesn't look like a plain matter of strength. If the tick's immune to fire, the alien that shoots fire was never gonna accomplish much. Likewise with all the other aliens specialities. The only alien that could probably do damage was probably Four Arms, who could probably punch real hard, but not in places that'd have much of an effect. Cannobolt's usage felt more like his abilties enabled a better aplication for that strength, since his strength is more about momentum and he could attack from the inside out.

Why was Ben punished at the end of The Big Tick when he didn’t do anything wrong? I always found it weird that Ben had to wash the rustbucket by himself like why couldn’t Max and Gwen help him?
Yeah, I found that to be weird too. I guess they wanted to end the episode on a comical/light-hearted note but didn't put much thought into it. Seems a bit out of character. Max would never punish his grandchildren so harshly simply for being cocky and Gwen would never approve of such an unfair treatment.
maybe it couldve ended with Max Saying Something Like "Hey, You may have Saved the World, But the Rust Bucket still needs to be cleaned, Lets Go" and then shows a Scene of they all Cleaning or Something It would've still ended the Ep on a Comical Note + It wouldnt have been much out of Character
Maybe all three could've been cleaning and Ben would complain about doing so, prompting Gwen to question if Ben will ever not complain about something. They start bickering and Max could roll his eyes as he just continues his part. It's a really simple fix, honestly.
Personally I always thought that Max kept it a secret because he didn't want his plumber history to come between his grandkids like it did with his own kids and Verdona.
PLus he may just be so used to keeping it secret due to spending so many eyars hiding it that it just never occurred to him that he didn't need to anymore

Yes, Ripjaws can bite through steel, that's kind of where he gets his name, but there's a couple of other aliens that can break in, Fourarms can punched through, Diamondhead can cut his way through, Ghostfreak could just go through, and Heatblast can burn his way through.

I always thought the Omnitrix' dial actually went into Ben's arm, given that the entire device is fused to him. Later iterations of the Omnitrix could've also been updated so that the dial uses a similar material that the Mechamorphs are made out of to store most of the circuitry and mechanical bits
I always figured it was like Transformers where they have a subspace storage where most of their parts go when they transform into much smaller things. So the dial itself is partially in subspace storage.

I always though that when the Tick destroyed Arburia it landed somewhere uninhabited. And if the Tennyson trio wasn't in Yellowstone then Earth would have been destoyed the same way.

I think Kevin's transformation consistency could also be explained as him just using muscle memory, since he knows that doing a transformation a certain way is the most likely to work.
Tbf none of the aliens ended up being capable of breaking the tick's armour. Cannonbolt only killed it because it managed to get inside the tick and destroy its organs. He did actually bounce off the armour

Well ghost freak wouldn't have to. Also I find it really unbelievable that Heatblast, whose gone super nova, can't penetrate it. At least enough to fit into.
@@jcore0981 supernova temperatures be damned we don't know what the big tick's armour is made of and I specifically said that cannonbolt couldn't break the shell. Also ghostfreak's claws have never been shown to be that strong so I doubt he'd be able to plow through an entire monster in the given time

Kevin's transformation may take the idea of "what if the alien used the omnitrix to transform into the other" so they used the stock animation to dictate how Kevin transforms since the wings of stinkfly and his eyes comes out in a similar way to that

As for the whole series I always thought Alien force was pretty mature as a kid especially starting out it felt a lot more high stakes and just creepy. I always felt the series kinda tapered off after the High Breed story concluded.

I always loved that scream Kevin did when he transformed, favorite detail of that entire sequence. Not only was it filled with unbridled rage at Ben for his current predicament, it also had the extra mile of--most likely--unfathomable agony throughout. Even by Osmosian standards that had to have fucking hurt...
I think it's really interesting how Kevin's condition in Framed is so similar to Albedo later in the franchise. Both are essentially doing the 'evil copy' of Ben's powers, and also can't revert back to their original forms. Albedo of course has differences, like being a Galvan, copying Ben's human form, and later the Ultimates, but in basic function there are a lot of similarities until Kevin mutates into his fusion form. I am glad we got more 'evil twin' antics in the later show, cause there's a lot of fun to be had mixing and matching transformations against each other in action scenes.
I feel as though a strange detail, is that cannonbolt is the only alien able to destroy the tick, but they said earlier in the episode that the tick destroyed his home world, at least in my opinion I feel a planet full of arbutian pelarotas could have managed to take out a single alien that one managed to take oit
It seems like everybody forgets that cannonbolts race were peaceful and rolled up for defence. Ben's the only one who actually rolls up to fight or move around

Big tic was my favourite one. Introduced the best wide boi cannonbolt. Gwen was a character I liked more in alien force and beyond mostly because she went from the story's typical jerkass to the only sane woman to a pair of chaotic good man children.
Gwen was never a jerkass, she was just very cynical. But she was never really out of line. I mean, who else was she supposed to suspect was wrecking SF but Ben and what are the odds that another Four Arms (who wears the same clothes as Ben's Four Arms) would be wrecking places that Ben was at that exact moment?

Same I had the whole original series on dvd and I watched it consistently to the point where you could name any episode and I give you a play by play of every single thing that happens in that episode
The timing of these reviews is perfect for me. For the past month I've been playing Ben 10 during lunch for my students (I don't have a real lunch break anymore since I have to supervise the kids). I enjoy the detail of these animation breakdowns and how they allow me to be proud of American animation.
32:45 I think it was mostly Kevin using Ripjaws to bite through the metal of the safe more easily than Four-Arms could break it. Not to mention Kevin would want to use all of Ben's transformations at least once.
Framed proves my point that the watch will prolong the transformation to ensure the user is safe before turning back with my first point being Kevin 11 vs four arms where it keeps whining till Kevin says he gives

I feel like if the idea that the Omnitrix was partially meant to revive preserve dead alien species then I’m guess then the destruction of Canonbolt’s species (idk what his species is called) and the unlocking of Canonbolt as an alien are probably connected somehow.
The worst part about max letting Phil die like that is, not only do we know he comes back in Omniverse, but when he does Max suddenly acts all guilty, as if he actually cares about Max's well being, despite being the one who SENTENCED him to Null Void in the first place

I would’ve given the tick super-healing. That way Four Arms was able to rip through the tick but wasn’t fast enough to get through to it’s weak parts. Then Cannon bolt just smashes through at high speeds letting him get to the tick’s insides :)
Max is hiding one other secret; he's a god-like being with unfathomable power. That's how he's able to pull off all these crazy moves that he does. Max is the strongest character in the entire saga, no doubt about it.
I have a theory regarding Cannonbolt bouncing off of trees yet being able to break the shell. I think he either has some sort of muscles to tense or maybe a fluid system inside of his armor balls that he can use to make himself more and less tough in order to intentionally switch between bouncing and smashing. I also think this would explain how he can start rolling while motionless in ball form, as well as how his armor morphs and stretches around him as he curls into a ball.
In regards to your comment at 4:20 about the Omnitrix's dial cylinder, I always figured that, seeing as it's genetically fused to Ben and can manipulate his physical structure seemingly painlessly, that the dial simply extended into his wrist and was the main point of contact between the Omnitrix and Ben's nervous system.

@@levievil9220 Even then, the user of the Omnitrix uses it, causing it to send a signal to Primus, then Primus sends a signal back, transforming the user, faster than the eye can see. Based on that alone, it seems that Primus and the Omnitrix send signals incredibly fast, meaning the destruction of Arburia would've been picked up by Primus and would've given Ben Cannonbolt almost immediately after it happened. However, thanks to the Tick's followers, we know that didn't happen since Arburia was destroyed a week before Ben got Cannonbolt
considering that later in alien force we learn that Max was also sent to the Null Void, it was probably then implied that people can survive in the Null Void if they have the knowledge and know how to be able to deal with the prisoners and inhabitants of the Null Void.
I could still see how Phil could have been too far to make an appearance in back with a vengeance. Even if the null void drops off captives in relatively the same area I can see him traveling further into the null void to either avoid danger or look for a possible way out, or at the very least food and shelter.
We also learn that Aliens have been appearing on the Earth since Ancient Times and that we later learn that one of the United States Generals actually made a containment facility for all of the aliens that came to earth for either hostile reasons or on accident.
Does the omnitrix automatically unlock a new alien that is best equipped to deal with a specific new threat or were they just lucky that Ben got Cannonbolt the same day a Galactus-like tick arrived on Earth?
purely an educated guess but I'm assuming the former. we know the omnitrix has some form of sentience so it would assess the situation and unlock the new alien as non of ben's existing aliens are equipped. But it's also entirely possible it was the latter as at the time ben's omnitrix is malfunctioning. Since it doesn't give ben the knowledge on how to use this new alien.
I love Warlord Vilgax. When it was first revealed he would be returning in Alien Force, I was anxiously waiting until the episode came out. When he mentioned conquering ten worlds to prepare to face Ben, I loved how he was influenced by Ben (even if it was out of hatred) and felt he had to match him in terms of versatility, and I also think he wanted to beat him at his own game. His voice was cool and during the show he showed a more nuanced and calculating side to him (especially in the Ghostfreak episode). And his underwater "Ultimate" form was surprisingly intimidating (even though he only does it once ever).
I like what happens to Phil later on in the series both him becoming a minor antagonist as a mutated terroranchula but also a supportive character in the reboot
Kuro, the Null Void is a prison or at least that’s the way Plumbers saw it, so it makes perfect sense for max to leave him in prison, specially since the plumbers were supposedly out of commission, he can’t exactly take him with a police officer and have them put him in prison
I mean, even if Max wanted to go back for Phil... How could he have saved him? He would have to open a portal, which he (assumingly) cannot control where in the void it opens (as supported by Back with a Vengeance's pop-up stating that Ben and co. were miles away from Phil in the void) and risks another alien coming out to cause havoc. I can kinda see why Max didn't really want to use it again after cleaning up the aliens tbh.
One issue I had with Framed was that Kevin also had Ben clothes when transformed. Obviously it would interfere with the episode ( Heatblast, Wildmutt, and Ripjaws would remain unchanged tho) but it makes a lot more sense and would be cooler for the aliens to be a variation of kevin's clothes, and maybe even have a modified design too.
To put your mind at ease for future re-viewings I always figured that the rocket boosters on the rust bucket were an upgrade he had installed while he was perusing all the weapon caches in search for the big-ass vilgax blasting cannon.
24:44 Canonbolt was also ineffective initially. His defense was greater than the other aliens but he still had to go inside of the tick to finish it off.
I’ve always enjoyed when they devoted full episodes to introducing a new alien because then we get to watch Ben try to learn how the new alien works, and then it’s nice to see them show up again later but it’s very upsetting that it was pretty much after wildvine that we got one of aliens. The wolf, mummy, and Frankenstein were interesting aliens, especially the latter two, but they rarely showed up. Then we got upchuck who did appear a few times over the remaining episodes but eye guy literally just shows up in one episode and he only shows up in that episode if I remember correctly. Ditto was cool, being his first multiplier alien and I loved that they gave him a full episode for Ditto which is probably why I liked him so much but he also never really showed up often.
4:12 I always assumed the omnitrix cilinder, was made of some sort of nanotechnology like the galvanic mechamorph, capable of compressing and stretching itself
6:15 - I like the poetic touch to the first wrong alien this season is the inverse of the first ever (onscreen) wrong alien, XLR8 instead of Ripjaws in the Kraken.
The thing that always bugged me about Ben cycling through all his aliens to attack the tick is that... he can’t time himself out and the Omnitrix has a recharge mode. Meaning he had to transform, do all he could to fight for ten minutes then sit back and wait for the watch to recharge, rinse and repeat. That must have taken well over an hour, all while the cultists made no apparent move to stop him.
17:44 He may have turned into cannonbolt because of the tick destroying the arburian pelarota homeworld. One of the omnitrix's functions is to act like a sort of "seed bank" for dna, just in case any species goes extinct. I don't know if all the arburian pelarota are actually dead, but I can't remember ever seeing another on in the series.
I completely forgot about Phil aside from his appearance in Omniverse. I guess if you turn a returning character into a giant-electric-spider-monster-thing they’re more memorable for me than they were before.
Funny enough, the finale of this season shows Max DID take the null void gun with him... he just never brought it out of the RV for whatever reason. I mean, I guess there wasn't much of a chance for him to use it in these episodes. Not so sure if that will change or not in other episodes.
My theory is that the tick eliminating the Iberian pelaroda homeland made primus activate the “restart a species” program and make ben able to use it, its a bit of a coincidence that he didn’t get it for a full week but maybe it took a day or two for primus to send it and ben only uses one or two aliens a day then it makes sense
I know I'm like a year late, but I was actually thinking Cannonbolt's hand movements looked just like Sam Raimi's Spiderman. Glad to hear it was intentional and not a total coincidence
About the whole “breaking ribs, but not trees” thing in The Tick, I figure those armor plates are somewhat elastic with how they stretch around him to form the sphere, so maybe he’s flexing differently to allow him to deform and spring back off the trees, and then stiffen up to shatter the tick’s ribs, kinda like they’re some sort of non-Newtonian fluid armor to allow him to bounce off or break through objects. Also, about max sometimes being athletic or not; sometimes old people have good days and bad days. Sometimes my grandpa can chainsaw throwing a massive fallen limb, sometimes he needs me to help pick up sticks. Sometimes grandma needs her walker, sometimes she just needs her cane.
Sometimes my pops can split logs one handed sometimes he can't even hammer a nail without hurting himself. Old people are just confusing with varying power levels depending on the time of day and the season.
I've just had a thought. In "The Big Tick" it's said that Cannonbolt's planet has already been destroyed, yet Ben destroys the very cause of this catastrophy using the native of that planet. If a noobie cannonbolt could do it, so how on earth possibly thousands of them couldn't? XD It kinda stands out to me. Great episode btw, I'm really enjoying your reviews :D
11:48 it makes sense that Max would do this. The fact that Phil kept releasing more aliens that come out and could've possibly hurt someone. He was creating issues and then using his scam to possibly kill people. I consider the fact that Max doesn't want Ben's secret to getting out along with the fact that Phil will just come back and try to get revenge along with the other fact he's just going to get out of prison, most likely to anyway. Overall what Max did, it makes sense, especially considering his friend would even consider killing him, at that point if I was in Max's shoes I'd do the same thing. So overall there are multiple factors putting on killing Phil to be the right move.
I’m watching ultimate alien RN, and they (the team) failed the NRG fight so hard. Water Hazard is actually one of the worst options he could have chosen. There’s no way he’s gonna cool NRG down, so all he’s doing by blasting him with water is making fallout. Fun fact, did you know that the contamination around Chernobyl is from the steam that got contaminated by the radioactive material? So when Ben freezes the coolant, and then NRG thaws ALL OF IT and we see the steam rising out of the stack? Yeah they made a new Chernobyl.
*Tom Perkins* also redesigned some of the background aliens into Omnitrix aliens, *Derrick J. Wyatt* did the same for the background aliens in Omniverse. Tom even designed what Sandbox, Snakepit and Shellhead look like. But all this was after the main series ended so they're not exactly canon.
32:21 Now that I think about it, his powers as Kevin 11 are kind of the opposite of Ben as well. Ben 10 can only stay one alien for a short amount of time and has to spend the majority of his time as a human, but Kevin 11 is _all_ of the aliens _all_ of the time.

One thing I wish they could've done better with Phil is that the reason why he does what he does is because being a Plumber is all he knows, and now that they've all disbanded and retired, Phil feels he has no purpose and doesn't know what to do with his life anymore. Not unlike veterans who came back from the war and have trouble readjusting themselves into society. So, he frees the aliens and recaptures them, allowing him to relive his glory days while also making some money of it. This could've made him a more sympathetic character rather than just some greedy asshole.
I love the little details and love in this series. For example, in one episode, Ben is practicing with Diamondhead, I believe it was SixSix's debut episode. One thing I never liked about the Tick episode is that ending joke with Ben cleaning the rust bucket. Like... Ben did literally nothing to deserve that punishment. Yeah, he was kinda bratty at the beginning about nature like any 10 year-old is and maybe they were trying to prevent him from getting a big head since this was the first time he directly saved the Earth but... HE JUST SAVED THE EARTH! And then Max and Gwen force him to clean a slime covered RV while they relax on lounge chairs?! That alone should have given Characterization a 1.

By Omniverse, I hated the Mistransformations with a burning passion. Mostly from that Humungousaur joke in the first season. Mistrsnsformation are overused to the point that the new Omnitrix seems inferior to the old Omnitrix and the Ultimatrix.

The reason Ben unlocked Cannonbolt is because as stated in the "EVERYTHING THE OMNITRIX CAN DO" video,the omnitrix acts as a backdrive in case any alien species go extinct. The omnitrix became aware of this and unlocked Cannonbolts DNA to be used
I'm sure he did in Omniverse when he recreated the universe as Alien X

Every alien in the Omnitrix itself is also on Primus so for all we know Azimuth could've started cloning Cannonbolt's species and looking for a suitable replacement planet when he found out about it's planet getting destroyed.

1. It was weird that Steel didn't become a recurring character. The dude could've made a good plumber himself.
2. It was also weird Max was okay leaving Phil in the Null Void in this series. Especially since he seemed to regret that choice later in Omniverse.

I don't find it an issue that the rest of Ben's aliens couldn't beat the tick. To me it doesn't look like a plain matter of strength. If the tick's immune to fire, the alien that shoots fire was never gonna accomplish much. Likewise with all the other aliens specialities. The only alien that could probably do damage was probably Four Arms, who could probably punch real hard, but not in places that'd have much of an effect. Cannobolt's usage felt more like his abilties enabled a better aplication for that strength, since his strength is more about momentum and he could attack from the inside out.

Yeah, I found that to be weird too. I guess they wanted to end the episode on a comical/light-hearted note but didn't put much thought into it. Seems a bit out of character. Max would never punish his grandchildren so harshly simply for being cocky and Gwen would never approve of such an unfair treatment.
And he literally saved the entire world. I mean, isn't that just a _little bit_ deserving of some time off?

I always thought the Omnitrix' dial actually went into Ben's arm, given that the entire device is fused to him.
Later iterations of the Omnitrix could've also been updated so that the dial uses a similar material that the Mechamorphs are made out of to store most of the circuitry and mechanical bits
There certainly is a low-key body horror aspect to the original Omnitrix.
I always figured it was like Transformers where they have a subspace storage where most of their parts go when they transform into much smaller things. So the dial itself is partially in subspace storage.

I think Kevin's transformation consistency could also be explained as him just using muscle memory, since he knows that doing a transformation a certain way is the most likely to work.
Tbf none of the aliens ended up being capable of breaking the tick's armour. Cannonbolt only killed it because it managed to get inside the tick and destroy its organs. He did actually bounce off the armour

As for the whole series I always thought Alien force was pretty mature as a kid especially starting out it felt a lot more high stakes and just creepy. Yeah “Framed” was the first episode of Ben 10 I ever saw and that scream is burned in my mind
I think it's really interesting how Kevin's condition in Framed is so similar to Albedo later in the franchise. Both are essentially doing the 'evil copy' of Ben's powers, and also can't revert back to their original forms. Albedo of course has differences, like being a Galvan, copying Ben's human form, and later the Ultimates, but in basic function there are a lot of similarities until Kevin mutates into his fusion form.
I am glad we got more 'evil twin' antics in the later show, cause there's a lot of fun to be had mixing and matching transformations against each other in action scenes.

I feel like if the idea that the Omnitrix was partially meant to revive preserve dead alien species then I’m guess then the destruction of Canonbolt’s species (idk what his species is called) and the unlocking of Canonbolt as an alien are probably connected somehow.
The worst part about max letting Phil die like that is, not only do we know he comes back in Omniverse, but when he does Max suddenly acts all guilty, as if he actually cares about Max's well being, despite being the one who SENTENCED him to Null Void in the first place

I would’ve given the tick super-healing. That way Four Arms was able to rip through the tick but wasn’t fast enough to get through to it’s weak parts. Then Cannon bolt just smashes through at high speeds letting him get to the tick’s insides :)

Max is hiding one other secret; he's a god-like being with unfathomable power. That's how he's able to pull off all these crazy moves that he does. Max is the strongest character in the entire saga, no doubt about it.

I have a theory regarding Cannonbolt bouncing off of trees yet being able to break the shell. I think he either has some sort of muscles to tense or maybe a fluid system inside of his armor balls that he can use to make himself more and less tough in order to intentionally switch between bouncing and smashing. I also think this would explain how he can start rolling while motionless in ball form, as well as how his armor morphs and stretches around him as he curls into a ball.
In regards to your comment at 4:20 about the Omnitrix's dial cylinder, I always figured that, seeing as it's genetically fused to Ben and can manipulate his physical structure seemingly painlessly, that the dial simply extended into his wrist and was the main point of contact between the Omnitrix and Ben's nervous system.
I always believed that Ben got Cannonbolt due to his planet's destruction which caused the Omnitrix to up date itself

Based on that alone, it seems that Primus and the Omnitrix send signals incredibly fast, meaning the destruction of Arburia would've been picked up by Primus and would've given Ben Cannonbolt almost immediately after it happened. However, thanks to the Tick's followers, we know that didn't happen since Arburia was destroyed a week before Ben got Cannonbolt

considering that later in alien force we learn that Max was also sent to the Null Void, it was probably then implied that people can survive in the Null Void if they have the knowledge and know how to be able to deal with the prisoners and inhabitants of the Null Void.
I could still see how Phil could have been too far to make an appearance in back with a vengeance. Even if the null void drops off captives in relatively the same area I can see him traveling further into the null void to either avoid danger or look for a possible way out, or at the very least food and shelter.
We also learn that Aliens have been appearing on the Earth since Ancient Times and that we later learn that one of the United States Generals actually made a containment facility for all of the aliens that came to earth for either hostile reasons or on accident.

Does the omnitrix automatically unlock a new alien that is best equipped to deal with a specific new threat or were they just lucky that Ben got Cannonbolt the same day a Galactus-like tick arrived on Earth?
purely an educated guess but I'm assuming the former. we know the omnitrix has some form of sentience so it would assess the situation and unlock the new alien as non of ben's existing aliens are equipped. But it's also entirely possible it was the latter as at the time ben's omnitrix is malfunctioning. Since it doesn't give ben the knowledge on how to use this new alien.

I love Warlord Vilgax. When it was first revealed he would be returning in Alien Force, I was anxiously waiting until the episode came out. When he mentioned conquering ten worlds to prepare to face Ben, I loved how he was influenced by Ben (even if it was out of hatred) and felt he had to match him in terms of versatility, and I also think he wanted to beat him at his own game. His voice was cool and during the show he showed a more nuanced and calculating side to him (especially in the Ghostfreak episode). And his underwater "Ultimate" form was surprisingly intimidating (even though he only does it once ever).
I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or not but Cannonbolt was the 10th mistransformation. I love that. I love that so much.
I like what happens to Phil later on in the series both him becoming a minor antagonist as a mutated terroranchula but also a supportive character in the reboot

Kuro, the Null Void is a prison or at least that’s the way Plumbers saw it, so it makes perfect sense for max to leave him in prison, specially since the plumbers were supposedly out of commission, he can’t exactly take him with a police officer and have them put him in prison

He would have to open a portal, which he (assumingly) cannot control where in the void it opens (as supported by Back with a Vengeance's pop-up stating that Ben and co. were miles away from Phil in the void) and risks another alien coming out to cause havoc.
I can kinda see why Max didn't really want to use it again after cleaning up the aliens tbh.
One issue I had with Framed was that Kevin also had Ben clothes when transformed. Obviously it would interfere with the episode ( Heatblast, Wildmutt, and Ripjaws would remain unchanged tho) but it makes a lot more sense and would be cooler for the aliens to be a variation of kevin's clothes, and maybe even have a modified design too.
To put your mind at ease for future re-viewings I always figured that the rocket boosters on the rust bucket were an upgrade he had installed while he was perusing all the weapon caches in search for the big-ass vilgax blasting cannon.
24:44 Canonbolt was also ineffective initially. His defense was greater than the other aliens but he still had to go inside of the tick to finish it off.
I’ve always enjoyed when they devoted full episodes to introducing a new alien because then we get to watch Ben try to learn how the new alien works, and then it’s nice to see them show up again later but it’s very upsetting that it was pretty much after wildvine that we got one of aliens. The wolf, mummy, and Frankenstein were interesting aliens, especially the latter two, but they rarely showed up. Then we got upchuck who did appear a few times over the remaining episodes but eye guy literally just shows up in one episode and he only shows up in that episode if I remember correctly. Ditto was cool, being his first multiplier alien and I loved that they gave him a full episode for Ditto which is probably why I liked him so much but he also never really showed up often.

The thing that always bugged me about Ben cycling through all his aliens to attack the tick is that... he can’t time himself out and the Omnitrix has a recharge mode. Meaning he had to transform, do all he could to fight for ten minutes then sit back and wait for the watch to recharge, rinse and repeat. That must have taken well over an hour, all while the cultists made no apparent move to stop him.

He may have turned into cannonbolt because of the tick destroying the arburian pelarota homeworld. One of the omnitrix's functions is to act like a sort of "seed bank" for dna, just in case any species goes extinct.
I don't know if all the arburian pelarota are actually dead, but I can't remember ever seeing another on in the series.
I completely forgot about Phil aside from his appearance in Omniverse.

Funny enough, the finale of this season shows Max DID take the null void gun with him... he just never brought it out of the RV for whatever reason.
I mean, I guess there wasn't much of a chance for him to use it in these episodes. Not so sure if that will change or not in other episodes.
My theory is that the tick eliminating the Iberian pelaroda homeland made primus activate the “restart a species” program and make ben able to use it, its a bit of a coincidence that he didn’t get it for a full week but maybe it took a day or two for primus to send it and ben only uses one or two aliens a day then it makes sense

About the whole “breaking ribs, but not trees” thing in The Tick, I figure those armor plates are somewhat elastic with how they stretch around him to form the sphere, so maybe he’s flexing differently to allow him to deform and spring back off the trees, and then stiffen up to shatter the tick’s ribs, kinda like they’re some sort of non-Newtonian fluid armor to allow him to bounce off or break through objects.
Also, about max sometimes being athletic or not; sometimes old people have good days and bad days. Sometimes my grandpa can chainsaw throwing a massive fallen limb, sometimes he needs me to help pick up sticks. Sometimes grandma needs her walker, sometimes she just needs her cane.
Sometimes my pops can split logs one handed sometimes he can't even hammer a nail without hurting himself. Old people are just confusing with varying power levels depending on the time of day and the season.
I've just had a thought. In "The Big Tick" it's said that Cannonbolt's planet has already been destroyed, yet Ben destroys the very cause of this catastrophy using the native of that planet. If a noobie cannonbolt could do it, so how on earth possibly thousands of them couldn't? XD It kinda stands out to me. Great episode btw, I'm really enjoying your reviews :D
11:48 it makes sense that Max would do this. The fact that Phil kept releasing more aliens that come out and could've possibly hurt someone. He was creating issues and then using his scam to possibly kill people. I consider the fact that Max doesn't want Ben's secret to getting out along with the fact that Phil will just come back and try to get revenge along with the other fact he's just going to get out of prison, most likely to anyway. Overall what Max did, it makes sense, especially considering his friend would even consider killing him, at that point if I was in Max's shoes I'd do the same thing. So overall there are multiple factors putting on killing Phil to be the right move.

Water Hazard is actually one of the worst options he could have chosen. There’s no way he’s gonna cool NRG down, so all he’s doing by blasting him with water is making fallout. Fun fact, did you know that the contamination around Chernobyl is from the steam that got contaminated by the radioactive material?
So when Ben freezes the coolant, and then NRG thaws ALL OF IT and we see the steam rising out of the stack?

*Tom Perkins* also redesigned some of the background aliens into Omnitrix aliens, *Derrick J. Wyatt* did the same for the background aliens in Omniverse. Tom even designed what Sandbox, Snakepit and Shellhead look like. But all this was after the main series ended so they're not exactly canon.

One thing I wish they could've done better with Phil is that the reason why he does what he does is because being a Plumber is all he knows, and now that they've all disbanded and retired, Phil feels he has no purpose and doesn't know what to do with his life anymore. Not unlike veterans who came back from the war and have trouble readjusting themselves into society. So, he frees the aliens and recaptures them, allowing him to relive his glory days while also making some money of it. This could've made him a more sympathetic character rather than just some greedy asshole.

I love the little details and love in this series. For example, in one episode, Ben is practicing with Diamondhead, I believe it was SixSix's debut episode. Later, in Alien Force, when Chromastone gets smashed and Diamondhead reforms, Ben states, "I've had a lot of practice with this one." This refers to his training in that episode. A nice little nod to the classic series.
