  • On site with electrician Matt testing and fault finding whilst doing an EICR (electrical installation condition report). This video will be used to support classroom teaching at college. Matt highlights some but not all the possible issues during the video like wrong RCBO fitted, IP ratings and loose connections within the Wylex consumer unit. However some further discussion have been left for the classroom lessons. Please note the installation has a remote double pole switch for isolation.
    This video gives you a chance to understand what’s going on inside some consumer units (fuse box or fuse board) and it’s not always the best practice.
    For EICR codes we use and recommend the Napit Codebreakers book.
    Videos are training aids for City and Guilds (C and G) and EAL courses Level 1, 2, 3 plus AM2, AM2S and AM2E.

    This is part of a lager video that will be used to help learners at Tresham College during Matts lessons. The installation has a remote means of isolation we want the video to promote discussions within the classroom about the extent of EICRS and the electricians responsibilities. Thanks Gaz

      It's a feature, not a bug. There you have a test point that the service entry is working. A shocking moment before you even removed the cover. Or if you can't afford coffee in the morning, simply touch the screw...

    Oh wow thanks for the heads up on the screw through the busbar trick. I'll use that magic when I'm in a big of a pickle.
    This cu board has got DIY handyman written all over it. Ask the customer a few questions about electrics. If they're overly keen to answer you'll know 😜.

    Hopefully won’t be a long time before ALL electrical work in domestic properties (even privately owned) becomes a criminal offence unless you are a fully approved and qualified electrician. Never mind notifiable, non notifiable, blah blah. Just blanket the whole thing. The thing about electrics is, BS7671 is so detailed and requires extensive knowledge to understand the regulations in terms or thermal constraints, disconnection times, installation methods, etc that DIYs will end up not complying with it. The NICEIC and other body’s must push for a law where only electricians can carry out electrical work. It would benefit the industry and weed out all the cowboys, kitchen fitters, and hopefully, prosecute them.

      To be utterly, utterly, draconian, unless a home owner has a "sign off ticket" detailing the circuits installed in the consumer unit, and tested as per regs then insurers may decline a claim.
      I'm suggesting claims adjusters and claims investigators examine, or cause to have examined by qualified electricians, any and all electrical distribution kit in a property.
      IE insurers shouldn't really be expected to cover duff and dangerous works by unqualified persons.
      Further the consumer unit is closed by said installing electrician and sealed with tag linked to electrician.
      On the "paper trail" principle.
      Any evidence of tampering results in insurers declining a claim.
      You can't interfere with gas installations unless qualified so should be same with electrical installations.
      Obviously this needs further detailed dialogue with authorities to write up actual stipulations.
      Would further suggest random spot checks on private dwellings and rental properties with view to inspecting installation for any signs of damage (for any reason), unlawful tampering, as in adding more circuits, or interfering with protective earthing arrangements, and, any attempts to bypass metering equipment.
      Or duff work by alleged professional electrical contractors.
      Obviously the above list is by no means exhaustive.
      It seems to me that is is a splendid idea for the editions of the regs to be updated and improved upon in line with technological advances.
      However, it's a bit daft to not police installations if some keen but totally ignorant (of any regs) home handy(wo)man can wade in willy nilly and cause any amount of issues, not least safety.
      (Annecdote Alert:
      Eons ago I found a homeowner had decided to use a 45A cooker supply circuit to connect up his ordinary domestic fridge. This he had done by removing the plug from the appliance's lead and directly connect to the connector block used by the cooker.
      What was worse the circuit was still protected by the same rewireable 45A fuse. An easy mistake to make and could have had dire consequences.
      Doubtless "you" will have found similar "installations" by clueless people ... clueless in that said people are members of the "how difficult can it be ?" society.
      Would suggest that sooner or later some of the above become unwitting contenders for a "Darwin Prize".)
      Lastly it might be a sensible notion for the DIY stores to stop selling any electrical items used for installation works.
      Electrical installations kit to be sold strictly through trade outlets to known and registered electricians.
      Naturally this won't protect against duff professional electricians but at least it reduces the chances of a fatality.
      Hopefully.

      No problem with that approach. While you at it let’s mandate that electricians can’t charge beyond a small amount for works that’s policed by government cost cutting agents so you get paid say minimum wage? And if any of the work you do is found to be defective you loose your license to operate and your livelihood.
      I doubt you would be up for that level of government interference in your business, but this would be the only way the general public would accept creating a monopoly of work.
      Anecdote alert:
      One of my staff asked me about what his electrician had said. The guy wanted a plug socket in his bathroom so said sparky wanted to run a cable from the lighting circuit to the socket. I’m not an electrician but even I know this is dumb as you know what.

    Some of the MCBs look as they have been overtightened resulting in the plastic casing cracking. See far left MCB.

  • @Marcel_Germann
    @Marcel_Germann 3 года назад +3

    There are two MCBs on the left side, the first one (from the left) and the third one are damaged by tightening the screws too much. That's one of the reasons a torque screwdriver is now mandatory...not only the too loose screws...
    The board is so damaged, it should be replaced. I'm not an expert in british wiring, but wouldn't it be easier to make the earth termination of the SWA inside of the board?

    • @lazzzylouis
      @lazzzylouis 3 года назад +2

      I agree. I'm pretty sure maintaining the same 'brand' throughout the board only serves to make the customer spend more on upgrading outdated board during a minor works scenario. Money grabbing scheme, just like updating the regs book with mainly grammatical and punctuational changes. They think we're stupid.

    • @davideyres955
      @davideyres955 2 года назад +1

      @@lazzzylouis I suspect it’s to do with the compatibility and how things like heat and possibly EMF interference could affect them if they are jammed together. If that rcbo was separated by a single gap I think they be hard pressed to say it is dangerous, however these things are manufactured to spec which is a minimum safety level for a given scenario.

    I went out to a shower callout just a couple of days ago with burning smell, it turned out the property just had an eicr and the shower line in the mcb was loose and had been arcing, I guess the wire hadnt gone under the clamp in the mcb, it damaged the mcb and melted insulation on ring final circuit as well as the line of the shower circuit , it also put a large hole in the rccb next to it.

    Just like to point out that the test date and recommend retest date is subject to absence of codes C1 C2 FI which is stupid really because you would need to have the report and read it to know that. It confuses almost everyone including sparkies and assume it's a satisfactory because it has a test label. I hope with amendment 2 we don't need to put that label on
