  • Let me tell you a story about an apprentice electrician that damaged this back due to repetitive incorrect lifting techniques. If you take only one thing form the safety element of your training then take lifting and handling seriously. Don't look back in anger like I have...

I remember you telling this story to us on the first day of the evening course. When you first mentioned health and saftey, I was thinking boring health and safety, boring manual handling, blah blah blah....... then BAM! That lad was you - it really stayed with me and made me take it serious. Massive loss to Tresham

@@GSHElectrical I would like to have a coffee with you after the Coronavirus has settled down. I am just looking at going in the industry as my health is declining too much now to lump heavy weights up and down. I am currently self employed and I am looking for an electrical course. Can you please help me.

hello gaz I worked for East Midlands Electricity Board at wigman road depot in Nottingham installing storage heaters so i know where you are coming from carting packs of bricks up and down stairs in blocks of flats when i did it i did two or at a pinch three packs and at the end of the day i was knackered you and i are similer in build and not built like a carthorse one lad i worked with could carry three packs on each arm and was amazing to watch as you say health and safety is a must as is manual handling methods to suit the job like lifting heavy drums of cable which i have done in the past silly me i am glad you came through it ok you like me have years of experience you are a top man. manual handling health and safety should be taught to your learners every monday morning to drum it in to them the importance of the subject. keep up the good work all the best from JIB Approved spark Michael J. Scott.

I have changed lots of storage heaters and still do, trying to use manual handling techniques , I use lifting equipment I.e sack truck and a level platform trolley to roll heaters in instead of man handling where possible , don't be afraid to ask for help especially with the larger heaters and carry less bricks it will take longer but better for your back in the long run than rushing to get the job done .

I remember taking out some storage heaters and my mate had an idea to build a barbecue out of the scrap bricks in his garden. Said he put a full bag of charcoal on but it wasn’t hot enough to cook on. Still warm in the morning though. Excellent videos thanks.

I really did not expect that lad to be you! If you want to get a message across, that is how!
I also had an MRI scan years ago due to the same issue and the pain would not go away. Working in confined spaces and in lofts were my worst enemy but I solved it and logically it makes sense, I joined a gym and doing weights etc, I built more muscle around my back as well as other areas but the muscle holds me up rather than relying in my spine. It worked for me anyway. Good work Gaz.

I remember one of the first storage heater (3.7kW) I replaced, I didn't know the bricks were removable so me and two others handballed it all the way down 6 flights of stairs to get rid of it, all 3 of us were absolutely knackered by the end of it.

Here's my story, I can remember a job where we had to get a industrial night storage heater up a 5 stories. it took the whole company IE the 2 boss's 3 electrician, 2 mates and my self but i can't remember that causing any problems. it started when i was around 25 myself and another of my mates were carrying a outboard motor down a steep beach. my mate slipped and fell.I took the full force on my back. there was many other times when i did further damage to my back. It was not until i started learning to ride a motorbike and i was having trouble getting on the bike. My son convinced my to see a chiropractor. Where it was found that the lower disk has busted. at 71 some days i'am not to bad, but others it can take me up to 10 mins to get out of bed. Also I can remember a job where we had to get a industrial night storage heater up a 5 stories. it took the whole company IE the 2 boss's 3 electrician, 2 mates and my self. P.S. I passed all 3 parts of the bike test passing 4 days after my 64 birthday

Thanks for sharing this, Gaz. I have a minor problem with my lower back. A few weeks ago, I lifted my five year old grandson and held him so he could pee into a urinal like a big boy. Don't do it! Took two weeks to recover and at the time it didn't hurt at all. The next morning I could hardly move.

Exactly this happened to my older brother. Degenerative disk disease. He is 33 and a gas engineer, a few years of lumping boilers and radiators about has completely knackered him.
He is still a gas engineer but is often unable to work due to the pain in his back, he will be walking and his leg will give way, certain positions give him immense pain or cause him to lock up. He went for surgery to correct the issue. Less than a year later he returned to the doctor, was referred for an MRI scan and they found more discs had began to degenerate and fragment those fragments pressing on his spinal nerves.
Wanting to lift something yourself that is too heavy or with incorrect technique because you cannot be bothered to wait for help, are too macho for help or feel pressured into doing it simply is not worth it.
