Our community season continues with the movie that added infamous and plethora to our vocabulary, the Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short classic, Three Amigos. Directed by John Landis, whose filmography up to this point is littered with hits, Amigos succeeds by continually making its leads the butt of the joke. Clint, Cal and Alex discuss the difficulty of analyzing comedies, whether or not Three Amigos qualifies as a spoof or an homage, how the film’s comedy is completely character based and how hard it is to be grounded after being so absurd. For the first time, in this community season, we also discuss whether or not Three Amigos belongs on the list and if it should be struck.
Meanwhile, Dan’s algorithm is busy investigating the motiveless murder of an invisible swordsman…

“Can I have your watch when you are dead?” That line cracks me up every time and is a question I ask my friends every time I see them wearing a watch
"El Guapo is younger than me. When did that happen?" Best line of the episode. Thank you Clint. Also - young Nic Cage as El Guapo was the first that came to mind. Also I would strike Three Amigos, not a top for me at all - but Holy Grail most definitely is.
I personally enjoyed, and intensely related to, a weary 'I'm a father of two. What I think hasn't mattered in a long time.'
I really love this discussion!
The main thing I remember from"Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" is Martin always slagging on Bogey about not wearing a tie.
Best line in "Three Amigos" is "Sew old woman! Sew like the wind!"
As an aside - "Galaxy Quest" has the same plot.
As does A Bug’s Life
Sew like the wind! Yes!! 😂😂😂
Respectfully Alex, Three Amigos is one of, if not the BEST 80's comedy and 100% a top 100 spot. Spies Like Us is a more underrated but equally great film.
“Remember what we did in Amigos, Amigos, Amigos”
This is reminding me where I learned to love absurdity. This is definitely one of my favorite movies.
Love this episode 😂 'Favourite V Best' is becoming my go-to for describing films I like. It's so funny seeing the three of you from left to right going from Clint absolutely loving the film from his childhood (I'm with you there Clint), to Alex loving it from first watch, to Michael absolutely not being bothered 😂. The debate on whether or not to strike it from Top 100 genuinely got me 😂 Not knowing what's in the envelope is cruel!
Only in 80s comedies will you randomly get an invisible swordsman in a fairly grounded story and have it still work. Love this film and its so great to see the martins' in only murders in the building still having a great time together
Hearing Clint talk about this movie, that movie that exists in your mind all the time that you can't shake because you saw it a ton as a kid and still makes you laugh, I get it. Happy Gilmore would probably be mine and it surprises me to realize it
It’s certainly not in the top 100 best films of all time…but there is something to be said for being so funny that it is endlessly rewatchable.
I wanted to watch this in the theatre so many times, my father decided it was wiser to leave a 10 year old alone at the local AMC for 2 hours than suffer through another showing.
respect for mentioning My Blue Heaven
Maybe a list it would fit on would be “Movies your dad says are great.”
I used to listen to the cassette soundtrack all the time. It was ridiculous and I loved it.
1:02:13 "Cal abstains courteously." I understood that reference!
I wish you guys would do Arsenic and Old Lace!
so do I, but given this made the 100, I dont think it will be
Gremlins is mine. And it is a clear community picture too. It says so much about that moment in time that is still marking us in so many ways.
Every time I'm struggling to get something done I find myself thinking or outright saying: "Gonna make it! Gonna make it! Goooooonnnnnnnnaaaaaaa mmmmmaaaaaakkkkkeeee iiiiiiiiittttttt!"
Watched it a couple years ago for the first time. I kind of chuckled a few times but I think I forgot that it existed again until today.
I love how "Cinefix Top 100" just means "whatever we feel like talking about."
It's bullshit, but I don't mind.
Would you say I have a plethora of pinatas?
Pythons plethora
Choral little buttercup
Lip balm? Western jokes

Saw this after I watched your podcast. great movie
"Galaxy Quest" is "Three Amigos" in outer space. Change my mind.
Not wrong at all! And A Bug's Life.
Guys seriously! I love your channel and your takes on movies..lists, whats the difference and now this podcast.
This top 100 startet with the movie 'Independence Day', and it was my Favorite movie as a teenager. Growing older (meaning: becoming more reflected and critical) and watching other Emmerich movies, I changed my mind on this and, still being highly entertaining, it is way too 'america saves the world' type of shit movie, that only Americans can get a kick out of. Never a pick for a top 100, but Clint putting it on 15 (WTF!) On his list was absolutely ridiculous!
Okay, after that you had awesome picks: City of God, Groundhog day, Terminator 2, RoboCop, Sunset Boulevard, The third man would all be on my list too. Parasite, seven Samurai, raiders of the lost ark or roger rabbit wouldn't, but I still appreciate them enough, and unterstand (and agree) if they are picked. Even most of your 'Not top 100'-picks Midnight Cowboy, In bruges (one of my absolute Favorites) or the Fly are awesome picks and could be taken into consideration for a top 100.
That beeing said:
Now you are declining so much, I am having major trouble taking you guys seriously anymore, especially Clint and Alex (Michael still holds the tourch).
Two weeks ago you picked 'The Babadook'. A mediocre horror flick at best and now this. Three Amigos is a movie you can have a good laugh at, but thats that. I wouldn't even put it in the best 100 Comedy movies, let alone in this list. There is a difference in having a guilty pleasure for some movies (Teen Wolf, Ghostbusters 2, Jaws 2, Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero, Hollow Man are some of mine for example) and making a genuine serious best movie list.
Top 100 picks MUST be masterpieces. Every MASTERPIECE has at least an IMBD rating of 7.5 (name me an exception, because I cannot name one), not meaning every movie with a higher Rating is one though.
The Babadook and 3 amigos don't even crack the 7. What's bullshit comes next? Snowpiercer? Pirates of the carribean 3? Kindergarten Cop? Hangover? Man on fire? Commando? Running man?.
Please don't ruin the legacy of your work. Have a fun time and make your jokes, but please come back in taking serious picks!!!
You're not satisfied with the death of cinema, you also want to dance on its grave.
Glad to see you back in the studio (and glad to have more than just audio only) 😊 It might be an unpopular opinion but would happily sacrifice quantity for quality when it comes to your content.
I’m in the same boat as Michael. My dad loved this movie :). Need to rewatch it now. Holy Grail definitely belongs on the list, but don’t love the strike concept I think hehe. Great episode though! You guys have such good chemistry.
people don't talk enough about Pennies From Heaven. Devastating film and such a rare bold brave choice to make at the time (1981) We need a 4K!
I feel like if the movie is 66th in the list, it should be safe from getting booted. Maybe just reserve the boot option for movies 80s and above? Seems weird that 3 amigos went from 66th to unranked then a mystery unranked movie gets slotted into 66th.
Still a classic. Loved it as a kid
This is awesome
Great work y'all
I learned the word plethora from this movie. :-D
The best part of this podcast is how little cal cares about this movie
Of the three big comedy takes on Seven Samurai, this & A Bug’s Life are fighting it out for second best
I'm not sure how we outright state that Elmer Bernstein wrote the score of Three Amigos without mentioning that he also wrote the score to The Magnificent Seven, one of the great scores of all time and the film that this is clearly spoofing.
I really hope we get a Blues Brothers episode and hear Alex let her Chicago colors fly
Ok it sounds like Ikiru was dismissed out of hand largely b/c they just recently discussed Kurosawa, which might be one of the all time worst reasons to dismiss a movie… especially a masterpiece like Ikiru… one of the most quintessentially human and haunting stories ever told.
Also, 3 Amigos is good enough for the list in the first place.
I’m not seriously offended (only pretend offended), but I do think this was a grave miscarriage of movie fandom justice.
Feature films? If he had read a little further down "replaced by his younger brother Curly Howard. This incarnation of the team appeared in several shorts and feature films with Healy at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1933 and 1934." So several feature films but only one with Shemp.
My kids are in their 40s. We quote the movie all the time, too. “Sew like the wind!!” “ Farly, farly, farly”.
This movie made my childhood with my Dad and brothers we can quote EVERY line in 2 languages. It's a classic, it's cheesy and it's just so over the top it circle back to funny
*"return of the Western"* which had been claimed as dead at this time ("Silverado", Clint Eastwood "Pale Rider"?) so good troika to look at.
That's a crazy premise to remove a movie to replace it with another movie when you don't even know what the choices are.
Top 100 comedies for sure
The My Little Buttercup scene is a masterclass of farce.
CARL REINER!!! It was CARL REINER that worked with Steve Martin on Real Men Don’t Wear Plaid (and also The Jerk), not Rob Reiner. That is all.
Also Martin Short was on SNL a few years before The Three Amigos, so the film did not precede the SNL gig.
I haven't seen this sincerely I was a kid but, I think I remember the line........
"We will prune the bushes of many small villages" 😅
Its “prune the hedges of many small villages” - Producer Dan
@@CineFix.... Thank you! I must watch it again soon.
Great audio quality.
Poor Clint but I get it, I would’ve put Macross DYRL in my top 20 and forced everyone to talk about it for an hour just to get it voted off
Lookuphere! Lookuphere! Lookuphere!
In the 54 second trailer for this Top 100, Three Amigos appears twice. I demand justice.
Top 10 Comedic Musical Numbers
Just a guess, but think those 4 might be the highest choices from each that didn't make top 100
Being 49, and the Dad who calls his unimpressed kids down to watch the Three Amigos, I feel seen.
That's gold! and totally me as well! Probably the same way I get confused when the kids show me a tik tok they think is funny and I just don't get it.
1:15:42 please tell me you were doing a family guy reference there XD
Think I’ve watched it a long time ago in a galaxy far away… really the first movie of this series that I don’t remember, like at all
The problem with comedies that are just joke after joke in the debate of if they are great movies is based on just hope funny you think it is. If you say this movie is hysterical from beginning to end, but that that’s all that it is, then other movies that wouldn’t be on a “greatest films” list would be Airplane!, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and Duck Soup.
If i had to pick one Steve Martin vehicle, it probably would have been "The Jerk" but I love Theee Amigos.
Can't wait to see Three Stooges Outside Ebbing, Missouri make an appearance.
3 amigos is a modern masterpiece
I love the conversation but the ranking and the changing the picks makes no sense at all
Fletch is by far the best Chevy Chase role, for me.
Weren't there a bunch of 3 stooges movies in the fifties (Three stooges meet Hercules comes to mind)
"Have Rocket Will Travel", "Snow White and the Three Stooges", "Three Stooges in Orbit", "Three Stooges Around the World in a Daze." "The Outlaws is Coming"... yeah they have a few feature length films.
Comedic ensemble, if there's a list for that. 🤷♂️
I love this movie. It's SO very good.
The guy on the right is a buzzkill.
Carmen was so beautiful and gorgeous. Such a good female character
Next comedy hit me up so LA Dodger can have a longer nap
Because of Sisi😂
I think whoever rated the movie higher in their individual lists should take the prop home...
Guys & Gal Love the vids! Fired 4 real? Did I miss a newsletter or Ur jk?
Good luck bro Corporate Exec’s are going Gilded Age 2.1 HAM all over USA 🇺🇸50% of US inflation was Exec💰yet Inc tells us get used to new prices! 🤯🤮
Tier list link or img where?
Nicholas Cage would be El Guapo.
No no no. You do not spend all that time with movie A and then swap out for movie B at the end! Plus, we deserve an examination of Holy Grail! Also, Steve Martin made his movies with Carl Reiner, not Rob Reiner! Otherwise, good work.
Three Amigos is better than all the mystery box options!
An hour and a half video on a movie that is an hour and a half long? …. I’m just gonna go rewatch the movie.
okay
Ok great job at missing the point ..
👍🏽
You'd definitely hate Every Frame A Pause, then. They go for hours and hours for something less than two.
You're one of those guys who hate Mystery Science Theater talking over the movie aren't you?
3 amigos, anchorman and elf. Now I know there wasnt as much thought in this as Id hoped. 😞 😞 Then you left Ikiru out because there can be only one 😞Be interested to see which is the _only_ one from Spielberg, Hitchcock, Kubrick, Ford, Bergman, Capra, and other greats. 😞 Next week - 'Deuce Bigalow.'
Man this channel use to be so good!! What happened? ✌️🇺🇸
the 3 Amigos were not short film 'before the feature' stars. if you listen to Flugelman talk about their films you will know he is not talking about shorts. Also when are shorts before the feature referred to as box office flops? You're paying for the feature.
i actually watched this, then I’M GONNA GET YOU SUCKA and EASY MONEY a couple of days ago.
John Landis alone made at least three movies better than The Three Amigos.
Martin Short and Steve Martin were great
It's an okay film, but I wouldn't put it
on a Top 100 films list. All 3 have been
more impressive elsewhere.
"This is not a good movie." -- Roger Ebert
Okay, so I haven’t watched the Seven Samurai video yet, but…have none of these folks ever seen The Magnificent Seven?
I dislike the whole strike concept…for a plethora of reasons. What's the point of making a list if it's not the "list"? In this particular instance, according to the initial conceit, Three Amigos made it on there fair and square. Now, I absolutely adore Holy Grail but whether it deserves to be on the list is completely dependent on other similar movies that may already be on there - e.g. Life of Brian is the "better" movie and it certainly deserves to be in the top 100, but two Monty Python movies in the top 100 doesn't seem right. If you're not going to stand behind the integrity of your list, I'm not sure why anyone should be interested enough to watch you discuss it.
Just show the damn Movie
Did Michael even watch the movie recently? Only able to riff off of what the others were saying or ducking the discussion by talking about other movies...
And once again, with the string of Steve Martin hits, 1987 is in contention for Best Year for Movies
People over 40: Three Amigos is great. People under 40: I don't like it
I wanted to do My Little Buttercup for my son’s mother/son dance for his wedding.
This one was a surprise...It's an ok, fun movie, but come on...there are many better comedies out there, especially spoofs.
Never seen it, never appealed to me. Not sure if this sells it but worth a look, I guess
I can only agree with the swap. The holy grail is better in many ways.
Errr I'm going to disagree, I rewatched it a year ago.... I remember loving this film and the it's ode to golden era Hollywood with that slick delivery from the comedys best of the time....
I felt the pacing and editing wasn't as slick, it drags and I don't remember that as a kid but it did, maybe a few changes would freshen this up. Sorry to be the one that has anything negative to say about an otherwise good film that hasn't aged brilliantly. A perfect example of a better film is dirty rotten scoundrels, pacing, delivery, incredible lines, and great set pieces, it's superior and has aged incredibly well.
Sorry but Three Amigos in the top 100 is some bullshit! 😂
Amigos is a classic. Stop. It's more than famous. Stop. It's IN-famous.Stop.
I'm sorry man, with this pick and gravity this list is getting so whack.
this movie is not funny
