Just had a thought. Elrond took Gil-galad's elven ring. And Isildur had the one, so there could have been an influence of one on Elrond who now had one of the three

part of the rings power is that it basically prevents anyone, even sauron from intentionally harming it

Actually it’s not ever fully stated if the ring is sentient or purely instinctual

Why didn't elrond push Isildur into the lava? It would have saved a lot of trouble later on.

It would have put men at elves at war, which would probably be more damaging than what happens later on.
