Yeah but no one took it seriously at that point, causing the idea of OSR to be a parody. And they have been kind of updating it to be closer to the current editions since. C&C is what got the ball moving in a "hey, we can do this legit" way. Then OSRIC, Basic Fantasy, LL, & eventually S&W gave made people say, "hey, WoTC won't sue us." Crazy days...
Hackmaster actually has legitimately great supplements (Little Keep on the Borderlands is a classic), but it loses a lot of TSR compatibility which makes it OSR adjacent, like DCC or Mork Borg IMO.
I started playing back in the early 80s and started with AD&D. If I am wanting to play that style of game, C&C is my go to system. I ran it for 6 years and loved it.
That was a great watch! I have to sit down and actually play C&C now! I bought the books a while ago after I lost my mind DMing 5e, when a player nuked my dragon in one round. I bought like 8 games and then just started running 2e.
I have heard of Castles and Crusades so getting a chance to interview a creative in the space in 2000s was wicked as hell. I definitely have to play Castles and Crusades sometime in the future!
@@tabletopbro In my (limited) experience, it's the OSR game that I start 5e folk out with. In play it feels a lot like 5e, but with no HP and "at-will ability" bloat so as the guy running it I'm very happy. Also, STEPHEN, C&C is still a much better game than 5e, don't put your game down like that.
That gave great insight into the 3.5 collapse and the huge model difference between smaller operations and the Seattle company. It’s reassuring to me that there’s a genuine customer appreciation coming through here. Any plans for more interview style vids?
Wow i was for sure you got the wrong Godfather, was expecting Matt Finch or Chris Gonnerman. I learned something today, C&C published first. Love that the 1st print run was called the Spartan 300!
Castles and Crusades is a really good take on the classic fantasy style RPG. 20 years on, the rules are the same....so DM's and players can spend their money on supplements and adventure modules, instead of investing in new editions.
Hackmaster from Kenzerco came out in 2004 and was a parody game but was also meant to be played and is probably the First OSR game.

WHY!?!?! Why do you do this to me! Now I may have to buy another game...=) Thanks for making the stuff that we all enjoyl

It’s definitely on my list. Sounds like stripped down 5e which sounds p cool!
They don't get nearly enough credit. The only thing I add to my C&C game is the 1e weapon table and their saving throws.
I really need to try it out

Microlite 74 was my introduction to the OSR, probably 2006

They’re pretty easy to do so if the people like them, probably!
Great interview
Thanks!
Great history lesson!
What can I say I’m a student of history
Very interesting interview, thanks for doing this :)
Thanks for watching it!

With misprints!
Kenzer and company started the OSR wave with Hackmaster😮

I really like Troll Lord’s policy of one edition that works so everyone can play with each other regardless of when they got in
