I’m 76 now and your story from art at high school sounds similar to mine, I could always basically draw a bit, but marriage children and work put a stop to any of it, As my kids went of to school etc I wanted to get back into it somehow, it took many years from folk art to oils etc ending up in pastels on and of for years, now illness has slowed me down a lot, which is how I discovered urban style art a couple of years ago I can no longer travel much but I’ve not let it stop me I belong to a community art group to keep my skill going, and all the local cafes are my favourite places to sketch now, and that has been through watching you on RUclips so thankyou for that, wish I could see you in Australia but I doubt you’ll be down my way on the York peninsula 😢
Retirement has been the most difficult transition I’ve made in this life. Sketching and Urban Sketchers has been a way to stay connected with others and to challenge me. There’s always another level to reach for. Thanks to you and others for this community 🙏
Thanks for showing the first sketchbook. It really inspired me. I'm 63 years joung. And love to" Try" skekching what I s around me. Have a wonderful Hollydays
You are such an inspiration. I was so excite to meet you the first time and your personality just shines. Joining urban sketching clubs have really changed me, being with people that inspire you and like you say just want people to share in the hobby. I was always so scared to start drawing, but when I go out with everyone that fear goes away. Please keep on inspiring people, you are such a wonderful ambassador for urban sketching
My favourite part is now to sketch alongside other people. Oh how I’ve changed! 🤣 it’s such a wonderful way to spend time with likeminded people and get inspiration and see the world through their sketchbooks!
Ive been drawing on and off since i was a child. Was not particularly encouraged by my family. Now that I'm retired, I've been doing more drawing and I've discovered urban sketching. Its literally my art therapy. It's very meditative for me.
Such a good way to put it Sharon. And isn’t so much more relaxing when youre not creating art to put on a wall or sell. We just draw in our sketchbooks and then turn the page and draw some more 🥰
Taria, I too have zero “formal” training. I’ve learned mostly from a wonderful teacher, and now friend, Shruti. But I’ve learned a lot from youtube and just by doing. This video is one of the reasons I follow you. You are authentic. I so enjoyed meeting you in Buenos Aires. And it’s so interesting to me when I learn someone is an introvert because I’m so extroverted and I somehow think everyone else is too. Please keep sharing content. Truly it’s made a big difference in my sketching journey.
If you get to Newcastle check out Adamstown Art Supplies on Brunker Road . Stared out as a newsagent with a few pastels down the back, now a treasure trove of art supplies. Enjoy your trip.
I have to say Taria, that you were the one that first turned me on to Urban Sketching and motivated me to open a sketch book after many years of hiatus. I live in Sub Tropical North East New south Wales Australia (near Byron Bay). If ever you were near by, I would love to meet you in person. I am trying to get into the draw every day mind set. As I live in the bush, I only go to Town on Saturdays to swim and shop. I try to include a half hour to hour sketch as well. I am starting to look at Murwillumbah Architecture and everything else as a drawing opputunity; thanks to you and a few other Urban setchers I follow. Thank you for your inspiration, Cheers Muffy. PS . Enjoy your holiday in OZ. JUST A QUICK QUESTION " Can you take Watercolour Paint in your Carry One Luggage when you travel on planes ?
Muffy - I’ve carried my sketching supplies with me on several flights. I just put my kit in the tub that goes through the scanner and it comes out on the other end. I’ve never had to open it for inspection. I’m pretty sure they see the watercolor pallet, brushes, pens and pencils. While on the plane flying I will open my kit and sketch. Sometimes a person sitting next to me will make a positive comment. Sometimes no one says a single word to me.
So happy to hear this Muffy! Remember you can still “urban sketch” in the bush too! Yes you can definitely take your painting supplies on the plane as carry on. I have many a time 😊
Unfortunately not, the closest we get is about 2 hours south I think :/ mainly in Melbourne and Tasmania and a little Sydney and various small places in between

@tarias_sketchy_adventures that must be 2 hours south by plane. Pity, Queensland is the best state!!! 😉😅
