Awe, thank you! I have been embracing my greys with the thought that it will be less of a shock to slowly ease into a full head of them instead of dyeing for years and eventually needing to expose my ‘roots’. Ha ha! No harm or embarrassment in aging, we all pray we can be lucky enough to do so! ❤️
@@ArrowHillCottage I actually love the salt and pepper look on people! Silver is a lovely colour so it's so strange that people would do anything to get rid of it. I guess we have been brain washed into thinking anything that shows that a person is older is bad. Even if that thing is inherently beautiful, like silver hair.
My struggle is 90% my husband. He grew up super poor and trying to get him to cooperate with the 1 in 1 out rule is hard. I find myself having to go through things ( of my own) and quickly get them to goodwill before he knows what I’m doing. Yesterday I finally was able to give away a pair of shoes I despised but have hung on to for 10 years because he thinks they could come in useful someday, I also threw out a hoodie I accidentally bleached but replaced. He has insisted I keep the bleached one in case I need a work shirt, because the other few worn out ones won’t be enough?😂. I love him but the struggle can be real. Today we are discussing why we don’t need a water bottle from every single event we’ve ever attended .
That can be a real challenge I imagine! There are some deep rooted feelings that he has towards stuff. It is good to not push him too hard, but at the same time - because YOU want progress- it will be important to communicate and try to make small decisions together. It might be a slower journey for you, but any progress is better than none!
hi, i totally understand. my dad grew super poor country too, so he keeps all even really broken stuff ! we succeeded to let him go the broken shoes too when really it was no more possible, ;) totally resonating with what you expressed :). the fear of lack is intense for them. your compassion is sweet love for sure, it is sweet :) for them, i think they feel the preciousness of all things. in deep, it taught me to care and respect each thing. but letting go for sure is not is cup of tea too.. by telling him it will serve others in real need too if we have maybe too much, it can even ruined it to store the item sometimes, i leaded by example to let go some personal items, mine, to refugees when arriving in france years ago etc.. and step by step i keep this declutter to my own flat, so when he visits me, it seems inspired to let go, little by little but i let go too to his own path and needs. my mother was pushy first and then i told her to focus on her stuff, to feel more in control of her space, even if sharing with him, they find storage solutions for him in the garage and other ways to allow each one to feel more serene. as each one has his own category of too much i think ;) even living with few things, i have too for sure ;)
Things get dropped on the kitchen island on the way to and from the garage. I’ve started clearing it off every night before bed. Feels so good to see it clean and empty every morning.
True, the evening reset is helpful, but why does everything get loaded on the island? Is there not an easily accessible home for the items? Maybe take a peek at that so you can eliminate always being the person in charge of cleaning off that area. That’s kind of stressful.
#5 for sure. I used to be an organized hoarder with every hidden and designated storage space filled to the max with Tetris-like mastery. I'm sure that the previous points on your list had a lot to do with that too. Thanks for including some funny reenactments in this video... we have to laugh at ourselves sometimes!
I love the acting bits in this. RUclips just suggested your latest to me today and I'm glad I clicked in. I'm still working on everything having a place. Health challenges since moving means this house had never been fully set up (5 years) which definitely leads to bringing in more clutter.
This was a great video and very helpful because we do tend to forget that clutter creeps up on us and that one outfit on the chair turns into two and then three and then it just becomes its home. Thank you so much you’re helping me a lot.
Enjoy adding some of your ideas to the ones I already practice. I don't have anyone I can share ideas about minimalism, so (mostly before I go to bed) I watch one of your videos as if you were a friend and reflect on the topic. Thank you for sharing!
I appreciate your comment about confidently making a decision to replace something. I’ve become much better about being thoughtful in replacing worn out items when their time is due and not before. I will add that sometimes there is an overlap period where my old item isn’t quite worn out yet but I know it will soon.
Overlap period is a definite, especially if you're not sure the new item will work. I do that with running shoes to make sure the new pair is good before getting rid of the old pair. I made the mistake before of swapping them at the same time only to find out the new pair hurt my feet.
Hi! I remember the wonderful guy who used to run the shop at my first summer stock theatre experience. That shop was immaculate! We were apprentice actors then and learned from him that there was a place for everything, everything in its place. I get lazy but do my best to emulate this excellent habit!
It seems like it would be so tough to maintain keeping everything in place all the time - but it honestly isn’t that bad as long as the inventory is kept to a manageable level! ❤️
Thank you. I guess we all have our own way. Whatever works best for everyone. I generally wear my work outfits for 2 days. I do allow my outfits to lie on my chair/stool & the tops (anything worn next my skin on the top half of my body) after the first day have two options. They are either ready for work or ready for washing. 💦 Only after the tops have been washed & dried will I put them back into cupboard. The chair/stool method works for me, but I do keep a control on it. I dare not put used tops back into my cupboard as I wouldn't remember which top I wore the previous day. 😂 My outfit sits out ready for me. The skirts or trousers as long as they are not soiled can go into the cupboard awaiting their next outing. Love clothes. ❤ [I guess another option for clothes in use is to place the outfit on a hanger to the back on the bedroom door just like 'Diane in Denmark' (You Tube) does. All great content. Thanks again. 😊 x
If you could go back and journal what has happened in your life that may have allowed the clutter to creep back In over the past 6 or so months, I think that could be very helpful for you! Were you extremely busy, Dealing with sickness, etc. not to use them as excuses per se….but to help you realize that life happens and sometimes doesn’t go as planned. Try not to be discouraged, and just get back to business! All the best to you! ❤️

For some things I think I want to replace, I just keep a set place for “pending removal” for a set time. I give the new thing a “test run” and if it goes well, I go ahead and put the older thing in the donate area (which also I keep on hand at all times). I have a permanent donate area just for that and I have a smaller “possibly get rid of” place near that area. It helps me remember exactly all the things I intended to replace. It just makes sense to me to put all those things in one place rather than scattered about the house. Other things I already know right away and those things just go straight into the donate box. I think the main thing is to set up a permanent “exit” plan for stuff Bcuz stuff is always coming into the home. So the outflow needs to be constantly managed just like the inflow does. So I just fill the space for donate (or maybe donate) and when it’s full, I haul it off and start all over again with an empty box (or two or three-the general area tho is “that corner” of a room which is my boundary for when to make another charity run. I also have a room I call “storage” and “cleaning/DIY station,” so it also makes sense to me to keep the “outflow” stuff in that area. And it helps me also periodically review what all I’m keeping in storage.
@@ArrowHillCottagelol. Thanks. I think I’m finally onto something here. 😅😅 I just look at it more like a business. They do things like mark downs or sell off at wholesale/auction/lots or trash or donate some things. You got to have room for the new stuff I guess, which on some level is just inevitable. Of course I think having a constant set plan for trash/recycle also is good but that is more glaringly obvious seems like. Just like we should know where every single thing we have lives, we should plan for outflow with all things, or at least keep that concept in the back of our minds.
I stocked up on necessities during the pandemic because so many supply chains were disrupted. It doesn't look like so much at first, but every time I buy two of something (or 3 or 4) it eventually becomes an avalanche. I did it with food, clothes, cleaning supplies, pet food, etc. I also have a natural inclination to move up my set spot; if I used to keep one or two and then have 5, I feel like I have to keep 5 ever afterward. I discovered that while playing Snoopy Town Tale, and realized that I was doing it in real life, too.
Yes! It can become a bit overwhelming before we even realize it! I used to look for coupon deals years ago and then realized I was stockpiling things my family didn’t even use/like! ❤️
The only thing that I buy duplicate of? Laundry detergent. All other cleaning products? Either I will purchase multi-surface cleaner or just use my steam cleaner.
After selling a couple homes in 2022, I'm anticipating a housing crisis in order to buy inexpensively. As a backup plan, I've been thinking about purchasing stocks. What recommendations do you have for the best time to buy? On the one hand, I keep reading and seeing trader earnings of over $500k each week. On the other side, I keep hearing that the market is out of control and experiencing a dead cat bounce. Any Advice?
I concur; I've been in frequent communication with an investing advisor for more than 17 months. I definitely remember needing inspiration to keep my business running after a protracted divorce. I researched licensing consultants, sometimes known as portfolio coaches by some.
Well, to me my daily used toaster and daily used hot water cooker aren't clutter. They look nice. And I have more than enough countertop space and even a table to work on in the kitchen. To constantly take those things and put them away would be such a waste of time. And I do like to see some nice items on display. A house should be practical. We don't use the blender that often, so it has its place inside a cupboard. Your totally empty countertop space looks truly boring to me. That's a nice toaster :)
If it works better for you to keep them out, go for it! As long as you have the insight to know that nor everything needs to be out all the time (like your blender example) then you may not have a problem with more and more accumulating on your counters! We do have plans to add some open shelves near the large window in our kitchen, so that I can add some plants and some jars for baking supplies and such…plus adding a tile backsplash. I agree that our kitchen doesn’t quite look ‘finished’ yet. ❤️
Thanks for watching! Do any of these habits resonate with you?
Yes. Not putting things immediately in place and, since I just moved, not having a set place for everything.
