Very personal relation to this song; 5 years ago I found my 31 year old son in the floor next to his computer chair, at 12:45 am; he was sitting in a meditation pose ( he was a Buddhist), chin down on his chest, and at first I thought he had fallen asleep. I moved to wake him and discovered he wasn't breathing. I did cpr, called 911, they rushed him off to the ER, where he was pronounced dead of a heart attack. He had been sick for a year with heart and lung damage after going into respiratory arrest at alcohol rehab during detox. So his death was not unexpected but I was in denial that he had become so ill; he was my only son, I loved and love him fiercely still. I will never truly get over his death. But when I went hours after his death to shut down his desktop computer I discovered that the last thing he'd pulled up on screen and watched was the youtube video of "Stairway to Heaven." One day weeks before he died he grabbed my hand as I was walking by him and told me, " You're going to have to let me go, Mom; I've stayed this long for YOU because I know how hard it's going to be for you; but I'm so tired, Mom." I couldn't bear it, instead of just sitting and being with him I was in denial that he was dying. So I truly feel he knew he would die that night I found him, and he listened to that song both for comfort and courage and also as a personal message for me not to worry about him, that he was going on his own stairway to the next place. And then he settled himself in the floor in his usual meditation pose and prepared his soul to go. I feel that to my core, and ever since then this song has a spiritual meaning for myself and my son Daniel and the bond we had. I am 58 now, and he would have been 36 this year.
I was a part of or at least witnessed dozens of such conversations when I was a teenager in the '80s. It's probably the thing that led me to skip the song whenever I hear it even though I recognize it as a great song.
This song is a vibe fam. In Wayne's World when they were at the guitar shop there was a sign "No playing Stairway To Heaven'. It used to be the go to song for guitarists.
I broke the “no stairway” rule at the guitar shop. But…I was in the acoustic guitar room by myself. So, does that count? I’ll put an asterisk on that one.
Also, the man with the lantern on the album, is the HERMIT in the TAROT DECK. And the symbols, are pagan symbols. He was reading a folklore book (Welsh I think) and it has a lot of that mixed into it. The May Queen, is the personification of Spring and pagan folk festivities such as dancing the May Pole. The bustle in the hedgerow is the basically when the groundhog decides it's spring In the natural world & starts preparing for Spring and rebirth, which is nothing to be alarmed by. (Animals rustling about making babies, etc... 😉) "Don't be alarmed now. It's just a spring clean for the May Queen." The preceding verse says: “And it's whispered that soon, If we all call the tune.. Then the piper will lead us to reason, And a new day will dawn For those who stand long And the forests will echo with laughter” This is reminiscent of Pan, the god of nature, who plays his piper & is safeguarding a lost otter and who is described as “the Friend and Helper”, and enchants those with “intoxicating melodies”. Pan wipes their memories of seeing him, in order to preserve their “mirth and pleasure” so they can remain “happy and light-hearted”. The song goes on to say: “Your head is humming and it won't go - In case you don't know. The piper's calling you to join him. Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow?” The goddess of Spring and the god of Nature (the Piper) are forces of good who draw people away from the mundane life of toil (like searching for material happiness) and leading them instead towards laughter and pleasure.
"As we wind on down the road, our shadows taller than our souls" love the imagery of this- late in the day when the sun gets low, that's when shadows get long or "tall"
There are classics, then there are CLASSICS. You guys hit on one of the most beautiful songs ever written. When my mother arrived in the States, this was THE SONG on the radio. It brings tears every time. Super excellent choice gentlemen. Kashmir next 🔥🔥🔥
This was my mom's favorite song. She played it for me when I was young on my record player and I fell in love with it too. When she passed 2 yrs ago, I played it for her. Every time I am feeling sad, lonely, depressed or just lost in the craziness of life, this song comes on and I feel her presents telling me she is there with me. She found her stairway to heaven and is finally at peace. RIP mom.
I grew up in the 80's with thrash and hair metal but Zeppelin blows all those bands away and I was introduced to Zeppelin by my father who was a drummer in the 60's and actually went to the original Woodstock Zeppelin was his favorite band of all time and John Bonham was his idol I can still remember sitting with my dad for an entire weekend listening to the radio when our local rock station played every song ever done by them at that point so he could record every bit of it
I think most of it is tied into Welsh mythology and folklore. I think I heard somewhere that Plant was reading a book about that at the time. I know the song references the May Queen which is supposed to represent the coming of Spring. The other lyrics seem to fit with the idea that they describe a Spring festival celebration (the piper, the smoke through the trees, the shining light). If you’ve ever participated in something like this or read on the subject it will seem to make a lot of sense. Again, I am only speculating. The lyrics also remind me of the classic movie The Wicker man (the original version) where a policeman goes to an island where the inhabitants use the same pre-Christian laws and celebrations. The movie references a lot of those elements of folklore.
I think y'all would appreciate "Achilles Last Stand." It's a juggernaut and masterpiece. Oh, and you should definitely check out the live version of "No Quarter," especially since you've heard Tool's cover of it.
Trash Talkers this is the band that I compare TOOL to. They have the same formula. Top 5 drummer of all time. Top 5 bassist of all time. Top 5 guitarist of all time. Top 5 vocalist of all time. Great lyrics and great muscianship. ✌
No question. There is a level of excellence that Tool has achieved. Zeppelin and Floyd are the only other two bands I can compare the mighty 4 to. 100% agree my good man 🙌🙌
I completely agree. Maynard has stated that they are product of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath. And its true you can hear the similarities with all of them more so with Sabbath and especially Zep. Very similar patterns and structuring of songs. Not that i think anyone can compare to Page but of all the members in each band Adam Jones and Page sound the most similar as hes Adams direct influence.
I believe Hip Hop fans when they say they haven't heard Stairway a lot more than Bohemian Rhapsody, but I can generally tell when a reactor has been sheltered from music that's not Hip Hop or Rap, which there are a lot of on RUclips and in the world.
The lyrics are two-fold. On one hand he's talking about buying your way into heaven (fake sanctity). On another, he's talking about being true and realizing true knowledge and saving grace comes from a real understanding of the universe (real enlightenment). True spiritual cleanliness is something that can't be bought or bargained with because there is no shortcut (stairway) to heaven.

Awesome. Heart’s live cover of this song at the Kennedy center honors is unbelievable. Performed in front of Led Zeppelin too! It’s got to be one of the best covers ever performed. Check it out.
This song has the best guitar solo ever created. There is no guitar solo that is more perfect for the song than this one. And legend says he couldn't figure out what to write, so he just went in and on the first take did it. I say legend because there are loads of other stories.
This is a absolute Awesome Reaction. One of my favorite's. I was born in 76 and grew up listening to this music. Still holds it's essence of meaning to this very day. A Classic Never to be forgotten.
Late to the party here, but glad you guys are diving in to the lyrics of this song. There's so much story and mystery in it that everybody kinda has their own interpretation of the meaning as it pertains to their own life and experience. This song means a whole lot to me but might mean a whole lot of something completely different to you guys. Cheers!
Really enjoyed watch you guys loving on the music we grew up with. I saw Zeppelin three times back in the 70's twice in Atlanta, GA in 1971 and again in 1978 then in Birmingham, Alabama again in 1978. Best live band ever!!!
This to me sounds what I would've heard in merry ol England circa 15th century of course the first part with the vocals and acoustic guitar and that mellotron in the background sets the mood for the first part of this song and the flute sound is the mellotron
I was lucky enough to see them in 2007 in London when they reformed for the Ahmet Ertegun tribute show. It was an unreal experience to see them. They blew everyone away.
Wow wasn't expecting this, this was awesome, such an epic song eh. Would love to see you guys do this same type of analysis with Pink Floyd's Time (please, please, please :)) John Bonham is the drummer and John Paul Jones is the bassist, and you got the other two names right.
This song always makes me cry. It always takes me to a different magical journey every time I listen this song. Robert Plant, the vocalist, also stated during one of his many interviews that the 4 of them were so musically-inspired when they did this whole album. Reason why this band is so legendary.
Led Zeppelin have been getting softer with reactions to their songs. A lot more songs are going under their radar. BTW, it's not the band, it's the label, just to clear things up.
One thing to remember is that among'st other things The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings heavily influenced Jimmy Page's imagery in this song - and many of the lyrics can be tied directly back to those books. It's easy to see references to Elves, Galadriel, The One Ring and numerous other Tolkien creations in it and other songs lean even more heavily into those mythologies. Tolkien was especially loved by British counter culture in the 60's and early 70's and I think Page is trying to use the same sort of imagery to create a feel in this song. So a lot of the lyrics are simply book references but are book references to a hidden world - even in the books most people don't really understand Elves & Dwarves and Magic and Page had a great interest in things beyond the mundane. A ton of Led Zeppelin songs embrace Magic, Mysticism, Mystery, Myth and Medievil history. I think for people growing up in WII and the Post War era in Britain it was very grey and lacking in much joy and beauty which is why they embraced Rock & Roll so readily and Page wanted to take that even further and create little worlds in some of his songs - it's less about the actual meaning and more about creatign somethign that isn't dull and grey and boring.
This is not the only Rappers React Channel I am watching regularly and I have to admit that I love lyric analyzises more on these channels because you guys ironically get the understanding of the songs real quick where even Metalheads fail. Thx for the reaction. Thumbs up 👍for that!
Really enjoy your reactions! Yes, music saves those of us with mental illness. For me, watching Reactions is the only time my racing thoughts stop. I love watching the discovery of great music. Please continue down the rabbit hole of Zeppelin! I’ll be keeping an eye out!
Y'all have to check out Anne and Nancy Wilson of Heart, covering this song, honoring Zep at the Kennedy Honors. The 3 remaining members are there watching and enjoying the show. John Bonham's (the drummer) son Jason is playing the drums with them. It is one of the greatest covers ever.
a nurse I worked with said to me out of the blue " I have 2 tickets to Led Zepplin do you want to go"? im like what are you kidding me an saw them in concert in Manhatten in those days you could smoke right in the coliseum an no one bothered you- to answer your question yeah $$ can buy me some happiness LOL love you guys!
have you guys seen the heart cover at the kennedy center honors? with the choir backing and jason bonham on drums (jon bonham's son lol)? it's wild! would love to see you guys react to it! you guys should do a live reaction to some of the full tool shows that are up on youtube, some are for sure good enough quality to enjoy. once you have done their catalogue obviously. just an idea, it would be cool to do a live stream as an event with the trashtalkers/tool crew!
It's about changing your path in life to live more true to yourself, forget your past mistakes and be less superficial then you at the end find that 'everything still turns to gold' so you can still find happiness (heaven) in life.
knowledge of one self is most important to find hapiness what you love what you like what you hate what you kinda dont like and slowly start barring off the bad vibes you can out of ur life , money amplifies , so if you know what you like ur good u have something you love doing holding you afloat but if you dont know who you are and dont know what you like you will spend it on everything and anything and then what usually happens is 1 of 3 things .. people lose themselves in the confusion, some pull themselves out through some kind of isolation dave chappelle for example or good influences in their lives pulls them out of said confusion ...writing this was therapeutic somehow .. felt like sharing
The third and last interpretation Is The Tolkien inspiration. It can be heard in the phrase, "In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees," which could be a reference to the smoke rings blown by the wizard Gandalf. There is also a correlation between the lady in the song and the character from the book, Lady Galadriel, the Queen of Elves who lives in the golden forest of Lothlorien. In the book, all that glittered around her was in fact gold, as the leaves of the trees in the forest of Lothlorien were golden.
Robert Plant spent much of the '70s answering questions about the lyrics he wrote for "Stairway." When asked why the song was so popular, he said it could be its "abstraction," adding, "Depending on what day it is, I still interpret the song a different way - and I wrote the lyrics." The lyrics take some pretty wild turns, but the beginning of the song is about a woman who accumulates money, only to find out the hard way her life had no meaning and will not get her into heaven. This is the only part Plant would really explain, as he said it was "a woman getting everything she wanted without giving anything back."
The statue you talked about (4:00) is really a tarot card ! The Hermit (IX) is the ninth trump or Major Arcana card in most traditional tarot decks. It is used in game playing as well as in divination.
after your reaction without looking for it I came across on you tube "jimmy page giving his story on the writing of stairway to heaven" and I thought of you guys right away I didn't listen to it yet but plan to go back to it eventually so check it out someday
A little history, Jimmy Page was a top session guitarist in the 60's. Joined the Yardbirds as the bassist (!). When Jeff Beck left/fired he became the lead. As original members left the band, Page brought in replacements; Robert Plant, John Bonham, & John Paul Jones and toured as the New Yardbirds! The original members stopped Page from using the Yardbirds name, as they owned the name. Page came up with Lead Zeppelin, but changed it to Led Zeppelin, as he thought people would mispronounce Lead. FYI years later Plant was asked about what the lyrics meant and he said I don't know, it was written to sound good not to mean anything.
@@outwest1014 i disagree, id put page above either simply because he can play anything really well (hard rock, soft rock, alternative, blues, country, etc). Hendrix and srv only had one sound, albeit they play it at an incredibly high level.
@@irshkashirkle Your wrong, Hendrix was a session musician, plus toured with Little Richard and the Isley Brothers. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as named the greatest instrumentalist in Rock History. There is a story about Page and Clapton attending an early Hendrix performance in England. After hearing Hendrix play, it is said that Page turned to Clapton and said "We may need to find new jobs" One last point, there are no Jimi Hendrix Experience tribute bands because no one can duplicate Hendrix. Where as there are a lot of Zeppelin tribute bands.
@@outwest1014 i don't see how that makes me wrong? I said that hendrix played at an incredibly high level and had a distinct sound (ie, hard to replicate and therefore no tribute bands), but i value page's versatility more than that. People play bethoven all the time, that doesnt make him a bad pianist, just really good at making fantastic music.

“Our shadows taller than our souls” has always been a favorite lyric of mine
Now that I really think about it...this line is pretty creepy

You HAVE to listen to the live version...it is mind blowing!
Deep purple - child in time!!!!
This is not the only Rappers React Channel I am watching regularly and I have to admit that I love lyric analyzises more on these channels because you guys ironically get the understanding of the songs real quick where even Metalheads fail. Thx for the reaction. Thumbs up 👍for that!
Money can only buy bliss. Bliss is fleeting. Love cannot be bought or sold, because it's priceless/beyond measuring the worth of
Without question Stairway is the most iconic song ever. Not saying the best, there is no best, but definitely the most iconic song ever!
It's like a religious experience every time people hear this song!
As the singer and rock god Robert Plant said.."this is a song of hope"
Really enjoy your reactions! Yes, music saves those of us with mental illness. For me, watching Reactions is the only time my racing thoughts stop. I love watching the discovery of great music.
Please continue down the rabbit hole of Zeppelin! I’ll be keeping an eye out!
“Our shadows taller than our souls” what a freaking line!
you must see the Led Zeppelin Movie
"the Song remain the same" why,?? you will find out
Just discovered y’all today. Can’t believe y’all only reacted to 2 Zeppelin songs!
The Best of all time. Led Zeppelin.
I would love for you guys to do (Hotel California) by the Eagles
Yes!!! Or like any other Eagles song. Other faves are Take it easy, seven Bridges Road, Lyin' Eyes,... Ahhh, so many
Number one song of all time…period.
I think I grew up in the best musical era.... Thanks guys
Holding me over till Tuesday
Others woukd call the Tippy Top of the Mountain being Misty Mountain Hop, the song right after this on the album Led Zeppelin IV
You guys are the Best. Its big Mark. You helped me figure out my tribute song to my deceased wife Sandi. Im 53 and still reacting like yall. Dueces.
Ahhh this is such a great song! More Led Zeppelin pleeease!
Also, you know it's a great song when the solo isn't there just as filler or to be flashy, but it just adds layers to the music
the statue is "the hermit" from the tarot card would probably be the most iconic depiction of it
True happiness comes from within, no matter the external stimuli.
Led zeppelin "the ocean" crazy song
Got to do Dazed and Confused
Money is a temporary fix. 2B "Happy" is to love yourself.
SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SONG
It's about changing your path in life to live more true to yourself, forget your past mistakes and be less superficial then you at the end find that 'everything still turns to gold' so you can still find happiness (heaven) in life.
Is there any question why some consider these gentlemen to be some of the best drummers, vocalist, guitarist that ever grace our ears
I was waiting for some trashtalk ngl
You need to see this live at Madison Square Garden in 1973! Everything from that show is unbelievable!!
Love this one boys was great, my two cents, kinda always thought the lady was mother nature idk keep em coming
Robert Plant's voice is amazing in this song. Listen to either Gallows Pole or When The Levee Breaks. F**kin amazing reaction guys. Love your videos.
Wow going big today!!!!
A lot of people can’t name them, but they’re a super group. Danny Carey said JB was one of his greatest inspirations.
knowledge of one self is most important to find hapiness what you love what you like what you hate what you kinda dont like and slowly start barring off the bad vibes you can out of ur life , money amplifies , so if you know what you like ur good u have something you love doing holding you afloat but if you dont know who you are and dont know what you like you will spend it on everything and anything and then what usually happens is 1 of 3 things .. people lose themselves in the confusion, some pull themselves out through some kind of isolation dave chappelle for example or good influences in their lives pulls them out of said confusion ...writing this was therapeutic somehow .. felt like sharing
My mother in law went to the same school as Robert Plant. She was either a year older or younger, can't remember which. Very awesome reaction guys!
The third and last interpretation
Is The Tolkien inspiration.
The lyrics are well-structured, like a poem, unlike most songs nowadays.
I remember years ago, one of the members, either Plant or Page I forget, said " there's a feeling I get....when I look to the west" meant the USA
You guys really need to listen to Fool In the Rain or Achilles Last Stand!
Still waiting for more RUSH! La Villa Strangiato!
Better watch this now before it gets blocked like all other LZ songs
Nick Z they haven’t been getting blocked as of late
The flute was a recorder, played by John Paul Jones. The bassist.
Jimmy is the best guitarist to ever grace the planet!
@@juliemanarin4127 He's not even close, check Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
After hearing Hendrix play, it is said that Page turned to Clapton and said "We may need to find new jobs"
One last point, there are no Jimi Hendrix Experience tribute bands because no one can duplicate Hendrix.
Very nice intro, fast and fun and to the point! The best one so far, I think!
1 of the best songs every......
🎼There walks a lady we all know! Keep rockin’ it out! ❤️🤘🏻
