Amazing how easy Doug and the band made it look to be this good! And how groovy an atmosphere that Hef created its no wonder everyone had a great time. The vibes of the 60's thankfully live on with the music which I make sure to listen to often to keep that feeling alive in my life. The plastic programmed music most producted today is mind numbing rather than uplifting and enlightening like the music of the 60's!!!

How many other albums do you have that you have no idea about? Did you inherit a collection? I have between 4 and 5,000 albums, but I bought them For the music that's on them. They're alphabetized so I can find anything I own in less than a minute, but I'll admit I don't play very many of them anymore. Usually, I'll look up something I want to hear on youtube. That way, I still run across little gems like Sir Doug at the Playboy Mansion from back in the day. The Mendocino album is still great as ever, but the video tells a whole other story. On this day in 1969 {March 22nd} the Sir Douglas Quintet performed "Mendocino" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'...
At the time the song was at #30 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, the following week it would peak at #27 {for 2 weeks} and it spent fifteen weeks on the Top 100...
Besides "Mendocino", the Texas quintet had three other Top 100 records; "She's About A Mover" {#13 in 1965}, "The Rains Came" {#31 in 1966}, and "Dynamite Woman" {#83 in 1969}...
Group leader Douglas Wayne Sahm passed away at the young age of 58 on November 18th, 1999...
    May he R.I.P.

Great song, I used to listen to that on Sydney's 2UW Top 40 countdown every Sunday night back in 1969 (I was in 2nd year of high school then). You can tell that was LIVE, and they did a really good job. Doug Sahm is really cool, and looked a lot like Dutch Prog-Rocker Thijs van Leer (from Focus) back then. That was Frank Morin on maracas, and he played all the brass for them, and sang harmony in that one (shame the camera wasn't on him during the harmonies). Good on Hugh Hefner for putting on these bands on his high-profile TV show. (Nice babes too; ) Oh yeah, Augie Myers on organ, Harvey Kagan bass, and John Perez drums.

Hef was just so cool . He liked the music of my generation and knew it didn't all sound the same. AND obviously he knew how to throw a party !

Andres de Urdaneta and Miguel Legaspi left from Barra de Navidad Jalisco for the Philippines, but they didn't know how to return to Mexico.
The return voyage was made by Andres de Urdaneta and Felipe de Salcedo going to the north first and turn around of what is now kwon as the town of Mendocino California(named after Antonio de Mendoza) and then coming to south straight to Acapulco.
That's the story of Mendocino foundation.
