Scott and Chris - I am so glad you address this issue. My 2 cents is that Etsy is one of the few sites left that you can communicate with the maker...regardless of the categories or price. > I am going to 'pause' my eCommerce work for a while to pursue another opportunity. I have cancelled my membership for now....but you are one of the FEW that I am still going to follow because you keep me updated on the status of the business and I SO much enjoy watching you. Blessings K
They want to make money from the 1%, it is going to be an absolute disaster. They actually need to not list the sales of the shop and let customers focus only on the quality of the products... or find a way to give new small business sellers a fair chance to grow.
I own a brick and mortar for 3 decades now and also sell on Etsy. We make our own products. I bought a few items from temu to compare to our products and test if any of our customers wil pick it up at the prices they are sold on temu (did the same when Amazon came around). Our customers will look at it but won't buy it. They are still here after a few months. So I won't worry about Temu that much.
After watching that Shop Audit, I have started turning my ads on from about noon to 11PM Eastern. That seems to be when people buy in my shop. So far, so good. Still need a little more time to evaluate.
I run the store with curated products, in between party favours for children. Our products are hand-picked items, purchased from various supplier. All the items are selected to create a themed party bundle. The packaging is designed and printed by us, and so the decorative pieces like 'thank you' stickers and gift tags. Very thoughtful process goes into each product. The products are then combined, packed in custom packaging and ribbons, stickers or tags are added. Larger orders may take up to 2 hours to prepare. So therefore they are classified as handmade.
I love watching you guys, but I just got to minute 18 and I have to say this because I think it’s important for people to hear. POD has literally changed my life. I used to be a seamstress/designer and sold locally until a few years ago my carpal tunnel’s syndrome got so bad I could not sew anymore at all. The thought of cutting fabric hurts. I’ve also met others online with various limitations and disabilities and the new Etsy rules have allowed them to continue being creative. I think the idea of keeping things “physically hand made only” is ableist and crummy. My two cents. Love e-commerce and y’all!
You guys are honest, experienced, and believe in (and promote) succeeding through smart + hard work. Some people can't get going in the morning without finding fault (whether it exists or not).
The biggest difference between Etsy and both Amazon & TEMU , is they both have Free Shipping. TEMU requires a minimum $ purchase, Amazon has a “membership” fee.. In the customer’s mind, those fees are “pay for themselves” (worth it) because you are buying multiple items that individually shipping would cost so much more. In contrast, usually the Biggest cost of buying from Etsy, is the outrageous shipping costs that sellers are allowed to charge, even for the smallest items. (Ex: I bought a sticker, a very lightweight item, and was charged $10 shipping, and it was very slow shipping, not anything special, way more than the cost of the sticker, which was also extremely overpriced). Shipping costs & “overpricing” items identical to the same lower cost item on TEMU (or Ali Express), drives customers Away.. can’t tell you how many women I know, that say ‘Etsy is too “Rich” (expensive) for me’ to shop there. Changing their customer Shipping costs is THE way to compete.
I will also say Amazon forces sellers to a certain price point.. Etsy lets sellers charge whatever they want.. which “if” it is a truly handmade item, is fine. But if it is something they are just reselling, like they bought it in bulk from someplace (like TEMU) and are just reselling it, much of the time they are taking something bought for a dollar-something, buying out the entire TEMU stock of an item .. then reselling it on Etsy for $10-$20 something each, knowing people can’t get it anymore from TEMU, because they bought out the stock & are now the only suppliers that offer that item.
Really interesting to listen to your proposed adds experiment, so pulled some data from last 4 months of sales, and started to have a look at where my main buyers come from - and who (region) was likely to spend the most and then started to look at the time frames of when they were shopping. It's been an eye opener on my niche and was incredibly helpful.
Yet, Etsy looks like Temu now. Many sellers carry Chinese items from Temu and AliExpress. Etsy needs to weed those sellers out. They purchase an item for a dollar and sells it for twenty
They don't sweep the site like they used to in the past to weed them out. They also will proce compare a premium brand against others who are not which is also wrong
It's compassion has been devastating to my shop as it pits my premium handmade clothes against more inexpensive sellers which had been damaging to sales for me
The vast majority of items listed and being sold on Etsy are mass-produced, factory-made Chinese substrates (mugs, glasses, clothing, tile, wind chimes). This absolute junk is cheap and meets the price point where sales are happening today after years of inflation has left Americans with little money for discretionary spending on gifts and such. Because the Etsy algorithm favors this junk that is selling, unique handmade items will not even be shown and shoppers will have a hard time finding them. It is a global race to the “bottom price” death spiral 🌀 and it is too late to exit the ride.
You are both Brilliant! Thank you for another great video and your negativity lol ( totally joking) as sellers we have to look at everything for us to succeed good and not so good. So thank you for bringing all this information to us you guys rock!

I noticed sells down 63% and Etsy doesn’t promote small sellers like it did. They are going the Amazon way and not delivering paid promotions.

Lol, best rants ever! Keep telling the truth guys, that's what people are here for...the truth!

It hurts the true handmade brand
It's compassion has been devastating to my shop as it pits my premium handmade clothes against more inexpensive sellers which had been damaging to sales for me
Since the changes Oct. 1, I’m not even using my budgeted amount. Sales are also lower. SUPER frustrating for Q4!
Curated, from what I understand it's like selected with a criteria. Applies mostly to vintage used items.
I always enjoy listening to your podcast. I learn so much.
Every time I turn off my ads I get sales within 2 hours of turning off the ads. It will be interesting to see you track this with real data.
I thought I was the only one.
