Be cautious with this layout if you track high already. This worked great with a big crater. We used to draw a line from grip center thru the CG on the VAL, what’s where the hole would go. Big holes would really give a lot of flare separation and move the bow tie significantly to not roll over the holes.
I have pin in palm on my venom shock , cobra and panic and my coach got me on it because I love the motion for being on wood lanes with broken down lane oil for a speed dominant lefty such as my self
I personally have Purple Venom Shock and Carbide Tank using this layout. They helped lot when the lanes are burned out because it didn't flip harder and gave me more control in the backend. Sometimes, I changed the surface to 500 grit and throw it on the heavy oil inside ten boards to allow the ball move slowly and get in the pocket beautifully and predictable. Not all bowlers will find this layout useful but it depends on the lanes and surfaces. They will have to know when is the right time to use this layout.
Yeah the explanations and demonstrations were awesome. This layout makes the ball handle the lane and look really smooth attacking and hitting very strong still. Maybe that's just Mikey's awesome release though...almost expected a couple 2 hand shots too lol. Got used to watching him 2 hand it lately.
Put rico on a toxic vibe, and its been great so far. Gonna start messing with surface now. Maybe drill the power tourque pearl rico as well. Glad i found this gem
Thanks for the video! This is very interesting. I may have to try this with a couple of bowling balls on some burned up patterns. Do you think this would work well on a short pattern like cheetah or ballard 36'
Interesting video. This is the first time I have heard of a 'pin in palm' layout. I myself am a speed dominant player, so that may not benefit my style. Pretty near though.
If I have a high track would rico still work with out the hole? Reason I ask is with symmetricals I have to be cautious of where I put the pins with pin down layouts or else the flare hits the finger holes. Id imagine with a higher diff asymmetrical ball it would work. Thoughts on would it work with a ball similar numbers to a Cosmos. When weight holes were a thing I had a Rico Hyroad it was a great ball.
Mine too. I had 4 of them (pin up, pin down, pin leverage and pin through ring finger). The pin up was my baby. 6 300's and 4 800's with a high of 847. The closest I have seen to it has been then Frantic. But, now I am a hammerhead. And loving the widows. The ghost is really close to the Crux pearl
Im at 20 mph , and 497. I took 12 years off , came back and drilled a few like this. Pin in the palm. And the mb out to 45. People thought i was nuts...
I never understood how this was a universal one size fits all layout. Pin in palm could mean the difference of a few inches in pin to PAP distance depending on the bowler and release. In terms of dual angle layout I’m pretty sure it was like 45x5ishx90.
Ok yes I did have that problem, however when I stay up the back or basically throw a good shot I’m getting over hook, even tried a little loft to see about cleaner because my best ball was the double cross but since urethane is going to basically obsolete in a sense I’m getting a new ball sometime but I have zero clue about the layout and thought it would make my reactive as controllable as your revenant with less flare? If I sound dumb that’s fine just say “let your pro shop guy that is awesome so his thing” haha zero pride here, in bowling anyway
You talk about not using too week of a ball. You used older equipment to show in this video. What would you suggest in the latest line for using this layout? I also note you are pushing the CG way out right of the thumb as you look at it. I know the world seems to think that static weights don't matter anymore but how does this effect things when you have high top weight vs low top weight in ball and short pins (less that 3 inches) vs long pins (3+ inches)?
Balls with over 0.040 diff are probably safe to do them on. Of course you can do it with any ball you want, but that’s just our recommendation. The effect of the CG and static weight depends on a multitude of variables so we can’t really give a cookie cutter, black and white response to that
Thank you for the answer. This is a serious question for me. I have bowled for a long time and I have a good amount of revs (not sure exact number) but slower ball speed (15 to 16 MPH by scoring units). Still throw 16lbs. Are you saying the location of the CG and static weights do make a difference? If so how? Since most disregard them completely. The effect you are claiming for this drilling might allow me to utilize more resin and less urethane overall. Just trying to not spend a lot of money to find out it doesn't work. That is without asking questions and gaining knowledge. Does this take the PAP of the bowler into consideration at all? @@tvbowlingsupply
@@David-ko9vy the CG location makes a difference, but not enough for most people to notice. The layout itself, if you decide to try it, will give you a drastically different reaction than you’re used to regardless of CG
PiP really doesnt work on modern equipment without the weight hole. Better off just going with a shorter pin. Without the hole, it really kills the flare
@@iceman5117 precisely why you use high flaring cores. Higher rev rates can benefit from the different shape pin in palm with no holes creates, just need to choose the right ball to do it on
my pso drilled my widow 2.0 pin above ring finger, mass bias almost touching the right side of my thumb hole. dont think he knows what hes doing just drilling everyones ball the same
Good lord the reaction you get from that type of layout is pretty gross. Buttery smooth and just so good to have a "blah" look when they hook a lot, and as a 2 hander the closest you can get is a longer pin to pap but shorter pin to center of grip to somewhat do the same thing
Now with pin in palm you can have the thumb drilled a little bit deeper and it will make the ball react like there is a weight hole. I learned that from brunsnick here on RUclips

I'm a big fan of the more technical videos, keep it up! :)
what about ball layouts and balls for low speed, average rev, high tilt players?
Fantastic video. Really appreciate these deep dives into the tech, detailed explanations. So helpful. Thanks!
Best PSOs ever
many thanks. I have questions about this for some time and now I got the answer. this might be my next layout.
I love Rico Layout.

Thanks Mike! Interesting. That’s something to keep in mind and maybe experiment with.
Thank you for explaining my buddy is real handys like you and he us going to try it. Maybe you will be a ball rep for Storm in the future. 😅
A crux Pearl man I’m jealous that ball helped me a ton back in the day
Great vid... Thank you
I first used a Rico drilling in the late 90s. Worked then. Will work now
I'll be trying that layout this week.

Michael tang and Chris via are awesome
Thanks
Agreed. I like how Chris said, can't see it...then the track was real clear after lol.
For one of the future videos, can we get a video with you and Chris on nothumb balls and the effects of different finger drill depths?
How to lay out pin in the palm?thanks
my last ball with RICO drilling is like 10 years back maybe time to try this out again
Hello
Thank you for your technicality video
Excuse me what's this layout?
Thank you for this bro
So what are the numbers for the layout for the Cosmos?
any tips to help a 2 hander stop tracking over the finger holes?
May have to add one of these to my arsenal.
"RICO" is a nickname for a driller/PSO named Ric Hamlin, who developed and implemented this layout as a rep.
What? So it's not Uncle Rico? I bet he could throw the bowling ball over the mountain with that layout.
Love Ric, he was with Brunswick when he developed it.
Could 2 handers get a similar look from the tour dynamx?
Good video very informative

Could Chris do a RICO-like layout for 2LS?
Great explanation!
Thanks for the video! This is very interesting. I may have to try this with a couple of bowling balls on some burned up patterns. Do you think this would work well on a short pattern like cheetah or ballard 36'
Should create a video with different layouts.... Will this work for slower ball speeds
What about two handers that track like one handers?
Would you use this layout on a Gem?
Thank you for the video. On your Rico are you still using the 45 degree pin to cg?
Thank you for your time
Is there a no thumb Rico layout?
Is this applicable for thumbless bowlers since the centre of grip is between the fingers?
Interesting video. This is the first time I have heard of a 'pin in palm' layout. I myself am a speed dominant player, so that may not benefit my style. Pretty near though.
I have a entry level ball that I have this same layout. With a high rev rate, it's pretty much the only ball that is controllable on a house shot.
Try it on a electrify g-o. And, it will look cool going down the lanes too
Would this work for a 2 hander?

High diff asymmetricals you definitely would be able to. If you go symmetrical, definitely lean towards the high diff ones
I'm just curious, when you missed in the ball held but what would happen with this kind of drilling if you missed outside of target.
It probably would’ve hooked. It was a house shot!
Im 2 handed and my rpm is around 450 and my ball speed is about 14 15 mph do you think this would work on 13lb iq ruby
RIP my pearl Crux's. The heat in Phoenix just killed them with 360 cracks
I just got a Revenant so I'm trying to figure out what layout
I'm surprised you guys didn't make a campy little video of your BIG move to a new location.😂😂
What thumb tape do you use? I've been looking for something sticker than Vise HADA Patch
Turbo MINT fitting tape!
I'm more Rev dominant would this layout be good on a phaze2?
What is the equivalent of this layout for a Full Roller?
No real equivalent for full rollers. We don’t recommend this layout for a full roller
@@tvbowlingsupply Thanks.
Would you consider a Rico on a ufo alert.
Crux Pearl is my favorite ball of all time. Threw mine for years until it cracked.

This layout is more about where the holes hit the core rather than what the layout is based on each bowlers PAP.
Gotta agree, my PAP is only like 4 1/4 over so I threw a ball with pin in palm and it flared a ton. Giant VAL angle does slow it down though
Would you drill the Summit with this layout?
perhaps for two-handers, put the pin in a finger.
What about too handers, same reaction type?
As mentioned in the video, we don’t recommend it for two handers as most will hit the fingers at some point with their track.

Ron Pallan did this layout 20 years ago for some guys

The whole point was the weight hole. No point using this layout now. Just use a long pin buffer regardless where it lands in your palm.
The lack of a weight hole actually creates an even bigger difference than when there was a weight hole. Give it a try🤷🏼♂️

It won’t have the same effect as the weight hole because of the location of the hole.
