    thanks so much. explaining that it means there is a unique way of writing every vector in V as sums of U and W is a great way to explain the motivation behind defining this thing that my textbook seems to be neglecting to mention.

    Where do you get that (0,1,0) is a vector in UnW?

    If it were (0 0 0), would it be a direct sum?
    Or there must not be a vector in U intersection W
