Damn...it looks easy as you explains the steps to do it properly. Very complicated labor if one does not have the know-how and the right tools. Thanks for uploading these videos.
Great video its a little easier on my 02 Sienna I have more room, I did not need to mess with the lower engine mount, I followed every step and was successful , without this video it would've been a nightmare, Thank you soo much
Excellent Video. Thank you !!! Have a 1999 Lexus GS400 (V8), 118K. Watched this video and reading the service manual several times I changed the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, etc.. A few recommendations: Have a 500+ lbs impact wrench to remove the crank bolt. Also, once the belt is on TURN THE ENGINE BY HAND using a Breaker BAR several times. If there is any binding, take off the belt, re-line the cams and crank, reinstall the belt and turn again. There should be no binding. Thanks.
Thanks for the Video. Completed all the belts and water pump on my 02 Lexus ES300. A little different than the video but close enough. I couldn't get the Harmonic Balancer nut out even with a 3/4" Impact. Put a breaker bar on and bumped the starter a couple of times then the impact got the nut out. I didn't like bumping the starter but I was desperate. It took me longer than the two 9 minute videos! Thanks again for putting this up.
Excellent video - completed timing belt and water pump on a Lexus ES330 - good editing and no waste of time. Had to buy a 3/4" impact to get the big harmonic balancer bolt off. Wish I had a car lift more difficult when sitting on a garage floor.
Nice video. I took mine to a tire shop (where I knew the owners) to break loose the crank bolt. A 3/4" 1200 ft-lb impact gun wouldn't move it, but a 1 inch 2000 ft-lb one did. That's just crazy tight.
I have a 2007 Rx350 and I have a loud noise coming from my engine area. It gets worse if I turn on my air conditioner or when I put my car in reverse and in hot weather. I was told by two mechanics that it is the tensioner, but I was told by a Lexus mechanic (just by listening) that it was the water pump. I have about 155,000 miles and I have never had any problems with my vehicle until now. I am not real fond about spending an excessive amount of money and I don't want them guessing what it may be.
Another great video! Really like that you show the problems that can be encountered and also the way to correct them. There are a lot of other videos online that are nowhere near as informative, thanks for taking the time to make all of these!
I've changed the timing belt on a similar 3.0 engine in a Toyota Sienna van and I will be soon doing the same to a Toyota Highlander. As I recall, I removed those studs with the torx ends by double nutting them. If you combine the torque from the torx socket with a wrench on a double jammed nut, the stud should come out unscathed. Even though I'm just a shadetree mechanic I have the special pulley holding tools from Toyota so I can both remove AND install the crank bolt to the proper torque.
I just did a 3.3 today, Same set up, I have a MAC tools 1/2"Drive AW480Q, It took that crank bolt out no problem. I experienced the exact same thing with the stud breaking at the top. I couldnt get mine out and had to get that plate out of the way. The thermostat is fun on that car too!
I agree well made and very thorough. Thanks for the extra effort when sheering the bolt off and lifting the engine. I prob would go ahead and remove the bolt because it's my car but I might not replace that belt again....
I use 1/2 inch Titanium IR impact removing Crank bolt without problem most of the time. However, there are times even the Honda Civic crank bolt can be a bear. Good Video.
When you are turning the engine by hand with a breaker bar, it has to be turned CLOCKWISE and double check the timing marks on the Left CAM, Right CAM and the Crank. You might have to turn the engine a few times. I turned my engine 5 times, each time checking the alignment marks to make sure everything lined up before putting the engine back together.
Also, there are 2 ways to remove the crank bolt. The first is with an air impact wrench (500+lbs). Buy one from Harbor Freight Tools, $90. The second is to buy a "holder tool" from Amazon or Ebay that holds the crank with a Breaker Bar as you turn the crank with another Torque Wrench. This Tool is about $50.00.
timing belt kits are now cheaper than 3yrs ago.....when i bought AISIN kit without belt tensioner it was $164+ .....now an AISIN kit with tensioner is $162
Before you broke the torx head of the stud you can take out that bracket out just jack the engine little bite. You dont even need slack out the the engine mount. Put a vise grip in middle of the stud that you have more power too loose with the 1/4 rachet in the same time.
I definitely gotta say ditto on recommending a tensioner replacement., otherwise a couple of months down the road you'll wind up having driveability problems that, depending on your experience level, may be almost impossible to diagnose.
On the side plate... Just pry or jack the engine appox. one inch up and the plate will come out. No need to remove the engine mount bolt. 7 years working on Lexus and never seen a tensioner go bad.... Guess it's better safe than sorry.
Excellent video! Question: I have a 2004 RX330 - the factory service manual states that the crankshaft should be move to 60 degrees BTDC when removing the timing belt. I am not sure if that is necessary. Do you know why the factory service manual states this? I think it's to prevent the valves from hitting the top of the piston...but if I don't move my crankshaft, shouldn't I be ok at TDC?
Better still remove no.3 timing cover (thats the metal one behind the Cam Pulleys) You need to remove both cam pulleys then 6 bolts and just jack up the motor with a block of wood under the sump. Hey presto the water pump comes out easy ! I don't think those studs were meant to be removed.
One last comment for those "shade-tree" mechanics. On a V6 or V8 make sure the slack from the timing belt is on the TENSIONER SIDE. Once the pin is released on the tensioner it will take up the slack. After releasing the PIN on the tensioner make sure ALL the teeth are in their grooves. Double check if needed. As I said below, TURN THE ENGINER by HAND using a breaker bar. It should turn with no binding. If all is good, put the engine back together and start it up !!
Yes, those studs were meant to be removed. they wouldnt have a torx head if they werent. Removing the studs makes this job go that much faster which means everything to a tech because we get paid flat rate. the faster I get things done, the more money I make
I was planning to do my timing belt and after watching this video it helped out alot. I do have a question regarding about your harmonic balancer kit that you haved use. May i ask you what is the diameter or millimeter that you use on the center bolt? I am looking to purchase a kit myself, and i do not want to purchase the wrong one.
hello i have a question i have a 88 nissan maxima with the 3.0 v6 and it is an interference engine my qquestion is after removing all the timimg belt covers can i just take off the old belt and install a new one with making sure that no cams or cranks move??because my engine runs great now so it will be just a swap will it bend the valves do i have to realign everything againn? im also changing the water pump and tensioner please answer as soon as possible the car has 108000 the belt was never changed will u also recomend to change it now or wait??
I would move turn the engine another tooth in direction of rotation of coarse. Then make marks on cam pulleys and engine part closest to back of cam pulleys . Then remove belt and then install with belt placed on crankshaft first, continue in rotation direction up to first cam pulley then over to the 2nd cam pulley and down to go around tensioner pulley. Belt has to go on in the direction of rotation to keep it tight until you get to last pulley, the tensioner pulley. That is when you release the tension on belt by unlocking the piston on the tension adjuster. A trick I learned from MASTER mechanic is turn the first cam ahead towards the direction of rotation one tooth, slide on the belt and turn back to get slack out of belt. The timing mark will align back up if you only moved it one tooth of the cam pulley when the belt slack is removed. Use the mark you made, not the one stamped on the cam from manufacturer. Your new mark should be close to the original but off a little because you began the job with the manufacturer marks not aligned but off a tooth or more depending how far you continued to turn the crankshaft when you got to TDC.
i noticed your turning the front cam sprocket bolt to line up all the marks instead of the crank bolt that procedure wont put to much strain on the camshaft. i know a lot easier and so much room to work on. please let me know if safe to do so.thank you very much .
I know this video is 10 Years old.... but if the end of the bolt breaks off when trying to remove the bolt, couldn't you put 2 nuts on it and use a spanner to undo the inner nut?
do you loosen the motor mount when you do this.I was thinking of double nutting the stud but lifting the engine sounds safer than snapping the stud completely to the block
my lexus dealer did timing belt maintenance but said theres no need to change water pump and tensioner ...so is that normal? i have heard one should do those too..but he said he has never heard of it..
I’ve heard on another vid that this is an interference engine, and rear cam can spring back while belt is off causing damage, is that true? Can I turn cams / crank independently? Thanks
My timing marks are off I have tried rotating more than 5 times and they will not align. How can I adjust the timing of the crank and the cam's separately so that they align?
I need to replace the whole Tensioner Pulley Assembly on a 1994 Lexus Ls400 .. can u please help from start to finish .. I would extremely appreciate it .. thank u .. Jay
Most manufacturers have switched to a timing chain setup, but I'm sure there are still a lot of timing belt cars being produced. A non-interference engine is just not an efficient engine in today's world. Cars need to be fuel efficient, produce more power, and have less emissions now. This involves variable valve timing, higher compressions, and tighter, smaller clearances. You have 2 options, either buy a car with a timing chain, or have your t-belt replaced per recommended mileage interval.
hi my car is making noise ..u can check my youtube channel..the timing, a/c and p/c belts were changed recently..so myabe that sound is due to that? thanks
Damn...it looks easy as you explains the steps to do it properly. Very complicated labor if one does not have the know-how and the right tools. Thanks for uploading these videos.
Great professional quality video...Not a single bad camera angle or skipped step...Great lighting throughout..Thank you so much~*
Great video. Probably the best one on timing a car on here.
This is the best video on the 1mzfe timing belt ever...and Ive seen a bunch
Great editing.
Thanks for your comments, I appreciate them

you are a very knowledgeable person and explain problems/solutions very clear. you would make a very great teacher.

Very clever, looks harder to do than a LS 40.

158 w/o tax, shipped amazon
you can heat that HB bolt with a torch briefly and it will stretch allowing the 1/2 in impact to take it off easily

Please say the customer's cost to have this done? i'm thinking of buying a 2000 over here and need to know. thank you very much
Good video but any decent mechanic would have replaced the snapped stud as a mark of professional courtesy at the least. Informative none the less
nice
BALANCER PULLS OFF BY HAND !!
Question: Why such a problem removing the harmonic balancer bolt? Guess my 18v impact won't do it!
That jacking up the engine if you cant remove the studs is rough..
What should I do if I have a fairly major oil leak behind the timing belt cover?
How much does this service usually run for the water pump, hydrolic tensioner, etc. on the camry??? Thanks
thanks
Please i can't romoved my pulley so which piston numbers should be top when my setting my timing.v6 Toyota sienna please
do you loosen the motor mount when you do this.I was thinking of double nutting the stud but lifting the engine sounds safer than snapping the stud completely to the block
Is it possible to replace the tensioner without taking the belt off just unbolt and bolt in the new one is this possible?
my lexus dealer did timing belt maintenance but said theres no need to change water pump and tensioner ...so is that normal? i have heard one should do those too..but he said he has never heard of it..
for all wondering this is an ES 300
Agreed
Holy crud thats comlicated hopefully one day il be able to do this
I’ve heard on another vid that this is an interference engine, and rear cam can spring back while belt is off causing damage, is that true? Can I turn cams / crank independently?
Thanks
what does a timing belt sound like when its going bad ? I think thats what it is. It sounds like a humming kinda
Did you have to drain the coolant first?
My timing marks are off I have tried rotating more than 5 times and they will not align. How can I adjust the timing of the crank and the cam's separately so that they align?
Those watching this, just get the kit with tensioner.
I need to replace the whole Tensioner Pulley Assembly on a 1994 Lexus Ls400 .. can u please help from start to finish .. I would extremely appreciate it .. thank u .. Jay
2019....THE Answer is.....NO
Need help with a 2006 lexus gs300 sunroof will not

next time add an anotation at the the end with a link to part2
@conmanumber1 its more trouble than its worth !

i lie your videos... you work like I do from "the old and new school"
hi my car is making noise ..u can check my youtube channel..the timing, a/c and p/c belts were changed recently..so myabe that sound is due to that? thanks

informative but you're not a good mechanic.
