This was straight-up self defense. He may have gone out looking for trouble and found it. But, the criminals shot first and tried to run him down. Totally justified.
I mean from a legal standpoint it was self-defence right up until he shoots the dude on the ground.
@@SuperUltraNinja1 That gun is still pretty close to his hand. After all that's happened, and the gun still being within reach, I'd say it was justified if I was on his jury.

@@Krackonis cool, isn't it? They even have the special, weird name for it - "self defence". Like their law almost says if someone is trying to kill you, you can actually stand up for yourself and take action like a person with agency who is in charge of their own destiny and kill them instead of just dying a victim's death like an Apog's Malcontent.
A man suffering from a gunshot wound to the back, writhing slowly on the ground, being shot in the head point blank? Regardless everything that came before, be it plays to his favor or his detriment, that's murder. Period. Absolutely indefensible from a legal and moral standpoint, and trying to chalk it up to any variant of self defense is just whitewashing the fact that that last shot (again, no matter if you're supportive of his actions, and the reasoning behind them, or not) sent him swiftly and assuredly into the same category of people as the criminals he takes out belong to.
Actually this could easily be a self-defense case. All he did was yell at the carjackers. They're the ones that fired at him.

It is impossible not to wonder if Willis was ill at this point. He wasn't bad in the film at all but he does seem to be... slightly off, somewhat removed. It actually works well for the character but... Very sad if it is true.
He just doesn’t care at this point lol.
@@Lutherstrode17492 There may have been some of that to it also!!!
However dementia is a slow and agonising process. He would have had plenty of time--horrible time--to think about what was happening. As time went by he possibly chose roles that he knew would demand less and less from him.
We know there are questions about his last few direct-to-video efforts and how much choice he had or _could_ make in the matter. I mean, in all seriousness... When was his last genuinely *good* film? He was barely okay in 'Glass' in my opinion.

@@ethics3 We have a very strong start by our friend ethics3 here, making assumptions about someone's housing, employment and tax burden. Truly an objective and fact based man. Yes, policing, prosecuting and housing criminals costs a lot. US has the highest per capita rate of incarceration in the world, even when, in terms of prosecution over 90% of criminal cases prosecuted end in a plea deal, which is a fraction of the cost of trials. What I want to know is: what is the alternative wise one?
This scene could be argued as self defense, sure there were some crimes committed on Paul's side but I don't believe it would be enough to land him in as much trouble as it did.
1. Yes, it was an illegal/stolen firearm, although it could be argued that he found it and was on his way to a police station and was attacked and used whatever weapon he had.
2. Being in Chicago he obviously does not have is FOID or CCW but again same argument as mentioned above.
3. Leaving the scene of the crime, he could argue he was in fear for his life and wanted to leave the area immediately.
4. The last shot at the guy lying on the ground was probably what could get his in most trouble, as the suspect was on the ground, no weapon in hand. He could argue he was moving towards it but it depends on his conscience. However, given how he is, he would be fine with saying that.
I am just bored at work.
The primary issue I see with it is that #1 would effectively be an affirmative defense and as such the onus would be on him to prove that he had miraculously "found" the pistol soon before the encounter and had plans to turn it in. It would be a difficult sell if the police/DA were really out to get him. It would be an entirely different situation if it was a handgun that he had managed to take from one of the carjackers during the altercation. #2 would be a non-factor if that was the case. However, this is a weapon -- likely stolen weeks, months, or even years ago -- that can potentially be linked to other crimes.
As for #4... yeah, it sort of depends. Technically you're supposed to shoot to stop the threat and it could be argued that the carjacker in question was certainly incapacitated and thus no longer posing an active threat at that time. We've also seen plenty of instances where police officers in particular have -- understandably and justifiably -- continued to put rounds into offenders even after they're on the ground (though that's usually in a slightly different context). I suspect this is the sort of thing that would largely come down to the other charges and how much the police/DA already felt about him on those. An upstanding CCW holder *might* get a pass for taking that shot... but a guy who is already being investigated for carrying around a stolen firearm and such probably not. One must also consider that Chicago is not the most gun-friendly locale.
Again, even in the worst case scenario he might experience mitigated charges due to the nature of things and how there was self-defense involved, but he wouldn't get off easy IMO.
Also he’s a white boy …. in Chicago all politicians bow to the negro movement ! His ass would be fried and we all know it.
He is a vigilante What he is doing is against the law He has a vendetta against bad guys Doesn't care about the law The lady is lucky she didn't get shot cause he cause he wasn't aiming he was looking away while he was shooting And the wound on his hand that's almost impossible to get shooting one handed Usually get hit in the thumb when you put your other hand on the gun
If I may add a #5 to this. In Charles Bronson's Paul Kersey in 1977, he would not give a flying flip about all the legality or lack of in his case.
But you explained it really well.
It's amazing that he managed to not kill the woman as he was firing wildly through the windshield. That would have been just as likely of an outcome.
Guess the writers knew what they were doing, huh?
Handguns aren't death rays that shread everything in front of them out to 120 degrees either side of the muzzle. They are low powered and low velocity and injure only what the bore axis placement permits.

Did she actually orchestrate the car jack on a suspect woman who she thought was trying to steal her man, and got a couple of thugs to pull the car job off in an attempt to scare off her female competition out of the barrio?
I have to admit it. When I first found out that Eli Roth was doing a remake of "Death Wish", my first thought was, "Oh, no! Why doesn't he just stick to horror movies?" But, then, I saw this movie, and I gotta say, it was better than I thought it would be. The original is a classic, but this version turned out o.k.
This is unwatchable garbage. Unnecessary to remake a classic unless you are going to do it properly. This is second-rate. A shameless money grab. Not to mention the exploitation of an actor that is clearly bored and/or mentally ill and can barely recite his lines. Bruce Willis has none of the charisma of Bronson.
Same. Especially with Bruce Willis's reputation for phoning in his performances anymore. But I sat threw the whole movie and was fairly entertained.
@@Better_Call_Raul This was more a "reimagining" of the story, than a remake. The original was a fairly faithful adaptation of Brian Garfield 's novel, on which it was based. This version simply threw the book out the window, but kept the basic premise. I agree that Bruce Willis has nowhere near the charisma of Charles Bronson. Interestingly, Brian Garfield admitted in an interview that he hated Bronson in the role. He had in mind Henry Fonda when he wrote the novel. Imagine Henry Fonda in the role. It would've been a completely different movie.

I saw this movie when it came out. And my first thought was why is Bruce phoning this in. It reminded me of the movie Paper Moon. In that movie you had a child actor and they had to do like 900 takes and then splice her performance in with the other actors.
