I am of an age where I bought my Hacker RP18 new, back in the early 60's soon after I started work and have had many years enjoyment from it starting way back to the pirate radio stations. Hi John , wow that's amazing to hear you bought an RP18 new !!! When I work on these radio's I often wonder what it would have been like to buy one new, what music was listened to and what news was being broadcast, the excitement of taking home a new Hacker Radio, what made it the brand wanted over others, was it a real turn around after bulky valve radio's (I do like valve radio's) having a "modern" transistor radio at home, that 1st power up and listen to, I'm so glad you have commented, I hope you share more either here , or if you want to email I'll gladly read out your experiences on a future video, really interesting to hear from someone who bought one new, thank you so much , Best regards Shaun.
@@SweeneyTTodd Thanks for your comments the choice at the time was a Bush TR82 or the Hacker which really was no choice at all. Old valve radios at my parents home but this was my first personal radio and I had a red tartan duffle bag which the hacker fitted neatly into. Took it every where when I worked away from home/holidays/training courses etc. long before I had a car. A friend and colleage had one also fitted to the back shelf of his Ford Anglia which was a source a great envy at the time. 😀😀JohnK
Hi Shaun. Well you are coming up in the world - three Sov II's and am so impressed at Simon's generous donation. Superb! These are lovely radios to work on and all three look in very fair condition and well worth restoration. Even the RP25 is working on MW/LW despite the AFii7s, so can't be bad! A few things. The heatsink on the amp board should normally be to the right (but not that I think it makes a difference?) and the exception being the RP37A (VHF Herald) when fitted with the large magnet Elac speaker, as the heatsink has to be to the left to clear the big magnet. All of these Sov II's will have been padded front and back but by now has inevitably disintegrated. Not the easiest or fun job re-padding them, but I think well worth doing. And those aerials from China do fit a treat (right diameter and will fit through the grommet on the underlying plate), perform well, and to be honest I think is the nearest to best you can get these days. You've got some good work/projects ahead of you on these three fine radios. But as I say they are a joy to work on. And so kind of Simon too.

One Or More Of The Transistors Could Be Faulty .....If Soldering The 5 Pin Plug Does Not Clear Up Your Low Frequency Instability (motor boating) Then Check C21 In IF Can By Replacement Looks Like You Were Lucky With The 3rd Radio You Seem To Have No Whiskery Rascals To Deal With (well not yet he he ) Very Nice Of Simon To Give You 3 Of These Great Radios....I Have Given Away 6 To Friends.... So good of Simon to make a generous donation I love the sovereign 2 I have two one is a mint rp25a with receipt manual and guarantee card and one is one I have saved from landfill it’s in lovely condition just has issue with stuck tuning dial looking forward to seeing the next video on these!
Shaun the last one of the three is a rp25 as it’s got a good man’s speaker and earlier FM setup all had foam as well in front and back! Great video as ever Shaun I’ve enjoyed it!

Simon is a great chap and very generous. The Sovereign 2 is one of the best sounding Hacker radios. All 3 of them are fixable. The only thing you will struggle with it the end caps for the handles. I’m sure someone with metal work skills could make some though. Looking forward to seeing how you get on. Cheers Graham

Roberts are better ha ha, just joking :-D I wonder if you put the trio in a dark place, they will make baby hackers. Yes im silly. You will have to fondle and gorp at the trio and see if one of them is the best. Take your time and enjoy your hobby :-D

Simon is a great chap and very generous. The Sovereign 2 is one of the best sounding Hacker radios. All 3 of them are fixable. The only thing you will struggle with it the end caps for the handles. I’m sure someone with metal work skills could make some though. Looking forward to seeing how you get on. Cheers Graham
