I believe in meritocracy, the best person gets the job regardless of race. Positive discrimination often comes from righteousness but it can create all kinds of problems in itself and I don't believe it's the correct way to bring about parity, morally and functionally. Also one reason people often don't take into account when pointing out that people of color are underrepresented in areas, is the fact that they only make up a small percentage of the population, around 12% I believe.
@@Gecko.... Meritocracy is how society SHOULD be, but it's impossible when the effects of things over a hundred years ago are still well in effect. Racism and its effects are still affecting many people in the US, and I don't see any issue with someone looking for a black editor making things worse. Not only does it give a black editor a job opportunity, but they could also want to have their work be looked at through the lens of someone with a black experience. When you look into how badly people are started in life, how much harder they have to work and fight to be somewhere a white person was simply started off, you start to realize why things like this happen.
Also I'm gonna have to see that statistic about poc in America because only 12% sounds insane, especially with Latino and Asian communities
@@bruhbruh7272 Yes I am well aware of the reasons why people support positive discrimination but my argument is that it isn't the right way to correct the effects still felt from slavery and racist policies like Jim Crow. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Firstly, positive discrimination does not look at individuals, it begins with the premise that the entirety of a certain group have all had the same experiences. Not all black people grew up in the ghetto etc. Not all white people grow up in beverly hills. There are black people who grew up in wealthy, stable homes with good parents and white people who grew up in poverty, with bad parents. Positive discrimination does not take this into account, it works on generalities. Racial positive discrimination ignores the class system which arguably is just as discriminatory than racism. A poor white 'hillbilly' person for instance will be discriminated against even if they are highly intelligent. So what Opera did when excluding all non-black people is turn away many people who have grown up in poverty and have faced discrimination themselves for their class, while allowing black people who have grown up in upper class, wealthy, influential homes. The goal of ensuring that groups are equally represented cannot justify the arbitrarily unequal treatment of individuals.
Secondly, positive discrimination is simply bad for society in terms of growth, efficiency, advancements. By employing the lower quality candidates just for their race, we inhibit progress and seed more resentment.
Thomas Sowell said; “social losses due to intergroup resentments”-which tear at the social fabric. He attributes such resentments, not to “the intergroup transfer of benefits” per se, but rather to “the basis of such transfers.” He writes, “Among Americans especially, the idea that some are to be treated as ‘more equal than others’ is galling.” Today, opposing preferential treatment for identity groups is often misrepresented as an anti-civil rights stance. However, Sowell notes, “it was after the civil rights movement itself began to move away from this concept of equal treatment of all individuals and toward a concept of equalized outcomes for groups that a backlash against affirmative action set in and grew for years.”
The question is, what kind of society do we want to live in? One in which characteristics such as race define and divide us, or one in which they are irrelevant? If we choose the latter, then identity-based preferential treatment policies are, at best, an unnecessary detour, and, at worst, a recipe for retrogression. We should abandon the illusion that unequal treatment can create equality and acknowledge that unequal outcomes can and do result from treatment that is fair.
I am all for positive action, that is how we correct the disparity.

We’ve made good strides forward in acceptance of all peoples (obviously we have further to go), but I take up issue with the idea that our current efforts at equality are the only ways we can try to achieve such ends. This particular brand of equity and affirmative action results in a different, worse type of diversify - one that still insists on belittling and minimizing the voices of particular ethnicities based on skin color and perceived privilege levels, etc. One can look at that and believe it isn’t the best way to achieve the world of fairness we want and not be a crazy racist. Discrimination of any skin color is bullshit and that includes discriminating against the taxes we perceive to have inflicted historical injustices on us. What I’m saying is we want the same world but maybe disagree on how to achieve it, and the people you believe are racists are just people who believe there’s another framework we could use to achieve a fair world other than the one we’re using now, which still celebrates marginilization if your a “privileged and is partly rooted in revenge urges.
