To make your sanding life a little easier and from my 25+ years experience. If you wipe any areas that have polyester or similar resin with a acetone soaked rag before you sand it your paper will last 10x longer. One of your biggest expenses building a boat is your consumable items like sandpaper. Just make sure you have no ignition source on at the same time: ie: vacuum, sander, or open flame heater. You will thank me later
A production canoe builder I met and talked to said the same thing but he couldn't describe why? I wonder what the reaction is that does that, I know acetone dissolve's or somehow messes up the styrene surface residue or something like that. Can you describe what goes on with that?
@@flightographist Most fillers "Body fillers and Fairing Compound" leave an oily or sticky film when cured, so putting sandpaper straight on them will clog the paper straight away, if you can remove the film with a chemical fine, if not you can use a "body file or old rough sandpaper" then put your new paper on, a big saving on sandpaper, as it is so expensive, "caution should be used when using a body file however" All the best for the new year, Al
@@allan8004 I use acetone as a cleaning agent before doing any spray painting, even from cans! Where alcohol will remove some previously painted surfaces, acetone doesn't!
I second this advice. Polyester doesn’t fully cure towards open air. That leaves a sticky surface that gums up the paper. If the polyester is meant to harden towards air, like top coats, 2% wax is added, which goes to the surface and covers the polyester. This is kinder on the paper, but should still be removed before sanding. Pre wash with acetone is good.
Thank you for all the entertaining videos. I also think you guys are crazy to take on this huge project. I just emptied your boat build amazon wish list. Best of luck in the new year, from a U.S. Coast Guard retired sailor of 27 years.
In the unlikely event that we take on a project like this, I will learn from your experience and sand the areas that are getting covered before covering them!
just a tip that worked for me. to clean your sandpaper, cut a block of wood 6 x 6 inches, and break thickish glass as fine as possible. take an old-type coke bottle or similar and put it in a deep steel or plate holder. hammer the bottle. take the wood block and put it onto the glass. hammer the wood block for the glass to go sit in the wood. take the wood and scrape it on smooth cement just to get the very sharp edges of the glass a bit smoother.
Wow, looks like a lot of thankless work. How about some alternate ideas for livening up the winter. Consider: 1. Attending the Miami International Boat Show Feb 15-Feb 19, 2. Making a boat delivery in March to Tierra Del Fuego, and/or (3) attending the Amsoil Snowcross races in Grand Rapids March 24-25. You gotta admit it would be more fun than sanding.
One other tip for you. Go buy yourself a 4” engine room blower and some 4” flex duct one end where you are sanding and grinding and the other out of the boat. You can even put a filtered shop vac hose at the exhaust end. Will make your life so much easier and save your health
I've seen two very skilled RUclips fiberglass boat builders highly recommend the tool called "file belt sander" (searchable on Amazon). It's a small, light belt sander. It works exceedingly well for quickly removing thick fiberglass in tight areas like the rounded corners of the settee. These RUclipsrs are Sail Life, and Boatworks Today. I've watched Sail Life use it time and time again, swearing by it. I'm really loving your cat build, enjoy!
Thanks Bryant. Yes, we have a file sander. It's not a precision tool, so reserved for spaces that aren't going to be seen or are going to be covered. It may be our lack of hand eye that causes our issues with it.
I like the George Thorogood-like soundtrack bits. Appropos to being surrounded by the things you will one day see but cannot yet see...(reference to the complex finishing details you must plan ahead for). I can't think of another boat build in composite that is going into such incredible detail in open source so to speak- this will change the world, I hope you you know that.
If you use the plastic applicator as a first step. Use it to apply the filler. For the second step use a stainless drywall taping knife of 8 or 12 inches depending on open area at a 45* angle. That will speed up your fairing.
I can't imagine living in a house where the floor, walls, ceiling and furniture are all made of fibreglass. What a job you have! I think I'd be looking for a bit of lightweight wood in there. Good luck and good progress for 2023.
I was thinking how nice it would be to have such easy to clean areas, particularly in a house kitchen. Also, the robust fibreglass would do way better than the dodgy chipboard lurking under the usual domestic shiny kitchen.
Happy New Year! Great progess in 2022, looking forward to seeing the miracles emerge in 2023 from all that hard work. I think the sanding will take until March.
Happy New Year. I've followed you since the aluminum boat refit. Can't wait till all your hard work is rewarded and you are back on the high seas. Stay safe. 😉
keep the counter overhang just as it is for now, when you are ready for finish work, put a wood trim above for a fiddle rail with some going below to hide a led strip light... you can get a multi color to have red lite for sailing and white for cooking...
Nice work on the corner tool. Jess, just think how buff your arms will look come spring. You will finish the void mid February, weather permitting. Have a Happy New Year!
Re: 7:37 When I'm using a sander with a shop vac attached to it the sand paper lasts at least 10x. Recently I've been doing a lot of refinishing at my job. While I don't have the exact same RO sander as that one, it looks like it should attach to a shop vac. Just take off that useless bag and plug in the hose. Side benefit is a huge reduction in the mess from the dust.
Jess, get a detail sander with a triangle backing, or look at a Porter Cable profile sander which has a bunch of different profiled backings for PSA paper and see if that would be helpful especially in future projects
I had a roommate that used to say "if you wait until the last minute, it will only take a minute to do". Same applies for working with resin. Once you mix it, your work will be done in a fixed amount of time 🤣
I like the details you are adding as well as the didication to outstanding craftsmanship. All this work on your cat should make the build on mine go faster and smoother. When do you think you will be ready to start my build! Be happy, be safe
Hey, happy New Year from Taiwan! I love you guys, and I hope that 2023 is great for you. Edit: This is my first RUclips video of the new year! I'm drunk! Whee!

I thought that you were going to leave the full overhang and was surprised when you cut it down to 1". I would have put a line of LED under cabinet lights under them. I see that you are still using sandpaper. A couple of years ago, I found the amazing performance of sanding nets rather than sandpaper. I use Abranet by Mirka. I would love to gift you several boxes but do not know how to get you something that is not on your wish list.
I'd take the base plate off the router after doing most of the rounding then carefully rout the rest you can get to miniziming the hand sanding at the bottom..
On one hand I’m so impressed with Jessica and her work ethic plus Matt showing genius every episode…the other hand is how many years before this boat sees water.

You should to sand with some water spray on it, it will prevent sand paper to burn out.
You can get small trimming routers, might help in a lot of tight spots

And that's why I'd buy a glass bought as opposed to building one. I hate sanding and painting. I build things but for glassing, I got a guy.
Cut the router base. If reluctant get a cheap harbor freight one and cut that down.
Agree
Not sure how delayed the videos are but a belt sander would really help you where the bourse won’t reach, maybe a trim router as well.
March 1st Jess.
My best guess is two weeks ~
Your boat is looking goooood. What’s she going to be called.
We haven't fully decided yet. As far as we know, we're going to carry over the name Elements of Life.
Have you not used mesh sanding screen yet or does it not work with your sanders? It clogs up a lot less then the standard sanding paper you are using
Happy new year 🥂🥂🥂🥂 i think the 10th off januari
do you have enough room to get the pocket door into the pocket, as it will need to be wider than the opening it closes off in order not to fall out

Unfortunately they wont handle the 1/2" shank for a 3/4" radius
I think it's only going to take you a couple of years to sand up there.
march 27 to finish that area.
48hrs
Instead of that piece that you cut off going to waste, why don't you just make a fiddle for that top as it's the exact size you need?
