I think it’s terrific that Matt & Jessica are willing to dedicate several years of their lives to learning high-level skills that will benefit them for all of the many more years that they will live on the water. It’s been traditional for hundreds (thousands) of years for people to build their own homes, and Matt & Jessica are doing exactly that. I don’t think any of us need to be handwringing on their behalf, moaning that life is short and they are missing sailing opportunities because they are building. If they are fortunate to live to 90+ years each, 3 years of their lives spent building a permanent home is a short blip on the radar screen.
Thanks so much for sharing this amazing journey with all of us, MJSailing--we truly appreciate it. ❤

Ryan & Sophia are good folks to know and have around.
I've watched them for a couple of years now.
So together, you have two brainiack guys and two beautiful women.
Holy cow, that boat is looking huge..

  • @JagLite
    @JagLite Год назад +7

Nice that you got a little help on the boat and taught her new skills.
Building a boat, like anything, takes a certain number of hours. Dozens, hundreds, or thousands. One person working a few thousand hours takes years, two people will cut the time by half, three people, etc. It's all about how long you plan to build instead of sail. Too often a builder thinks that if the designer estimates the project will take 10,000 hours to complete that they will be able to do it in less. Then they overestimate how many hours they will be able to spend actually working on the project. Then when they see how long they have been working on it and now realize how much more needs to be done and finally they understand they are looking at years of work still to go.
I've built a few boats by myself and when I was young it was worth it, now that I am looking at 70 I miss those lost sailing years that I spent building my "ideal" cruising boat. But what I considered "ideal" always changed. Fast very light multihull, small monohull, heavy displacement monohull, large but light multihull, medium monohull.... Each boat was excellent at some things and not so good at others.
Now I realize the boat wasn't the important part of cruising, it was being out there, not building the ideal boat. As long as the boat is strong and seaworthy any boat is wonderful. I hope you can get a lot of help and not spend too many years building. Time is all we have really, spend it wisely.

It's great that you had Sophie come help as she and Ryan are looking for a new cruising boat. They may want to consider the Max Cruise as their blue water platform - at some point in the future, anyway. They've been looking at a lot of monohulls and many of them will suit them well, but you just can't beat the comfort and performance of a cat. It would be possible to build the cat in a location where labor costs are far lower than the US and perhaps Ryan could run the crew and Sophie can feed them (and film too) but the project timeline would be vastly shorter.
At this point, everyone is well aware of all the time and hard work required to complete this project, but the results will be well worth the effort. A lifetime of great sailing adventures!

Just a thought. Consider hiring Sheetrock finishers to apply your gelcoat. Your focus would be the initial taping and joint preparations and prep. Then, when these folks come you can stay on gelcoat mixing. They will come and do all your vertical joints, next day your horizontal joints. You then touch up between trips and they will come back for “ heavy coat and overall coverage. You then sand again and their final work will be skim coat. They will take approx a day per trip. They can do a 3-4000 sqft home in a week. Your boat though smaller is far more detailed. It will take about the same amount of time.

Good Video. As a youngster I did quite a lot of Fiberglassing and I can tell everybody, even as someone with fiberglass experience, it's still a lot of hard work to see a project through from start to finish. The advantage factories have is usually you get to do just a few jobs on each project, so you tend to get really good at them jobs. That makes it easier. The downside to that being you dont get to FINISH the project. Hat off to you guys for taking on such a big challenge, basically by yourselves. Also hats off to your friends who come and help not always knowing that they are getting themselves into. 😃

Sophie mentioned finding it difficult to trust someone to help. There are just a few cruisers that could be trusted to help build your boat. They would be Colin, Mads, Teal, Johan, Garrett, Billy, and Dan. There may be more, but I've found these seven to have excellent skill sets and to be obsessed with doing it right the first time. Parlay Revival, Sail Life, Onboard Lifestyle, Ran Sailing, Salt & Tar, Tulsa Endless Summer, and Uma - respectively. Yeah. show them the plans, the materials, the tools, and watch them build. And there are more trustworthy cruisers when you start installing your systems.

@@Mechone11 I did not know there are millions of cruisers who have built from scratch their own boats like Johan and Garrett, or made extensive and major modifications and/or repairs to his boats like Colin, Mads, Teal, Billy, and Dan (maybe Kika should be included here). Further, I did not know that millions of other cruisers have met or know of Jessica & Matt, and would likely lend a free hand if in the neighborhood. And Jessica & Matt would lend a hand if in the neighborhood to those cruisers that I have named. I apologize - I did not know there are millions of cruisers who can be trusted by Jessica & Matt to help build their boat like Sophie suited up and went at it. Sophie is such a nice person, except when she handed out a piece of candy to Matt at the September Annapolis boat show (Duca had the same reaction as Matt - and it wasn't't nice).Wow, can you advise Jessica and Matt who these millions are so that Jessica and Matt can get skilled help for free? Thanks for your time. ps: I wish I could help them, but I am thousands of miles away, and although I am 76, I think I could perform a construction task after being shown how to do so as long as I did not have to use my left arm, and did not have to get into spaces in spite of my artificial hip.

A minor note. When you try bringing someone onboard, ease them into it physically. It might seem easy to you now, but it is extremely physically challenging to tape and sand... especially overhead. :) I give Sofie credit for hanging on as long as she did doing that overhead taping. Nothing in life prepares you for that type of extended movement!

Is there any way to thin that fairing compound? The thicker it is, the harder you have to press the knife against the surface. The harder you press the knife, the more likely it is to bend into the areas you're trying to fill. Also, tangential lighting when you're looking for the low spots. Turn off all the lights but the one you're holding up against the surface. You'll see every defect.

Is there a discussion worth having with your boat supplier to see if one of his crew could come over and help? Then you get someone who is building these boats and knows and has the skills needed. Maybe the trade-off could be more time in your content about the manufacturer and his boats plus an overseas worker getting experience in your country. It is just a huge job to do by yourselves, my hat is off to you big time.👍

@@MJSailing I was a deckhand on a fishing boat in North Queensland in the 70s and I remember a couple on a cat at the anchorage who had sailed all over the map in a cat they built from scratch. When I met them they had just finished another cat for a friend and were getting ready to start another for a couple that had seen their work. Although they loved sailing they also found they loved building just as much.
My suggestion was to push the project along but yeah you don't look like a sit back and watch couple. So much satisfaction to do it yourselves.
