    I can tell you exactly how Martha Stewart got so famous. Between her show and her magazine, her career was this perfect amalgamation of everything a bored housewife might want to try, from crafts, recipes, home improvement, DIY projects, gardens, potted plants, minor yard and landscape work, etc.. all presented by a woman who at least seemed very wholesome on screen, and made it all look easy for any other middle-aged woman to do everything she did. Keep in mind that this was before there was very much to see on the internet. Before Facebook, Pinterest, Tik Tok, Etsy, and wherever else people get this kind of content from. She was like the 90's version of Julia Child, but did far more than just cooking.
    People like my mom watched the show religiously every day it aired, subscribed to the magazine, bought her branded kitchenware.. she had deals with some major store like Walmart or Home Depot I think, for selling her brand of gardening and home DIY tools. She just found the perfect niche at the right time, before the internet really evolved and random people on social media started sharing home and garden tips.
    And then she engaged in insider trading and became a felon, which tarnished her reputation a little bit.

    • @wormdoodles
      @wormdoodles 2 года назад +102

      And the thing about Martha too was that she came along during the time when being a housewife or a stay-at-home mom was really looked down upon by society, even by other women who saw it as a relic of the past. We were just coming out of the yuppie era (Working Girl, anyone?).
      I had a home ec teacher in high school who loved Martha, because she made it respectable to be a homemaker again. It's easy to dismiss Martha's work as being "things for bored housewives to do", but she really did legitimize in the eyes of the public work that women had been doing mostly thanklessly since the start of the industrial revolution, if not earlier.

      I am a huge Martha fan and have been for 30 years. The woman taught me so many things that I cherish from baking to crafting to homesteading. She is incredibly intelligent and has a huge knowledge base on so many topics from food to travel to homesteading to fine furniture to vintage dishes to wine and on and on. She. gets interested in something and she learns everything about it. Her memory must be incredible. She has such an interesting history from being a model to a Stockbroker to a caterer to a magazine founder to a CEO of a large corporation and TV host. She definitely had a weirdly flat affect in the early days. Im not sure why she felt the need to come off so unimpressed. She did have a huge knowledge base but she seems to love learning so I don’t believe she was ever truly bored by a guess explaining something. She spent her life teaching people like me about all the things she loves so it makes no sense to come off as uninterested in what a guess was teaching, no matter how basic. Her affect has changed a lot as she’s gotten older. Now she laughed a lot more and is able to laugh at herself- something she NEVER did in the old days. She was also really impatient with children in the early days because they couldn’t execute whatever they were doing as perfect as Martha would. But that has also changed a lot over the years as she learned to let go and had her own grandchildren.

    I live in the UK and have never been to a Kmart, and will never get the chance to go to one, but found a selection of recorded tapes on the internet that were played in the shops in the 80’s. The random crappy songs are consistently interjected by mentions of Martha Stewart and lawn furniture, as well as kitchenware. The moment I saw that Martha Stewart Kmart ad, there was a moment of wonderful recognition I have no reason having.

    I love the way you use genuine archival terminology and act like we're digging through a cozy museum, and the jazz is just the cherry on top my god THE JAZZ.

    Mr. Moose, I gotta say, your videos are a GODSEND for the mornings.
    The calm pacing, delivery, and humor help ease-in my day, contrary to blasting my brain with high-speed TikToks upon waking.
    New morning routine established - Thanks Brutal!!!

    Hi Ian, just a small correction. At 28:55 you mention that there are only 17 stores remaining golbaly. While that number is true for the united states, there are hundreds of Kmart stores (owned by a different company) in Australia and New Zealand. Other than that, really enjoyed the video. Keep up the good work!

    17:53 I had a tape of Diana'a funeral. I watched it all in parts.
    Looking back, that's 312 minutes I will never get back.

    Sifting through collections of television recordings is a hobby of mine as well. I love when a new mystery tapes is uploaded. It's such an obscure hobby and most people really don't seem to get it so it's fun to see someone else finds and their take on the material. Also, Ian is really likeable; as reflected by his high views for such an infrequent uploader (not a criticism) and the esoteric subject.
    I watch the junk food review vids simply for Ians enerntainment value but if it was axed for more vhs mystery tapes I would love it.

    Yah it's mystery tapes one of if not my fave series from you! I love the retro asthetic and how authentic it is with you using an actual tape based camcorder! And it being in 4:3 ratio. It hits my love of the 90s / 80s so much!! Thank you again my dude!
