This has been exactly what I have been saying. And my doctors and family laughed . Never took me seriously. Now I finally found a doctor who told me this is real. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing! My Auntie recently confessed to my Mum that she has been seeing cars come into her drive, women exit the cars with head scarfs - like 1950s style head scarfs - and come sit in her room. She can also see cats in a kitchen counter. My Auntie is fully blind and has been for around 5 or so years now due to diabetes. She hasn’t mentioned anything to her husband because he will think she is “crazy” so she wanted to confide in my Mum. I’m thankful for this video so I can give the message back to my Mum to tell her she isn’t alone in this.
That sounds pretty distressing and much more extreme than I’ve experienced! But others in comments have mentioned seeing cats among other things, so it’s definitely something that happens. I’m glad you can pass on the info to let her know she isn’t alone - far from it! :)
Wow Thank you sooo much for posting this video. How you described your eyesight is exactly how I see every day. I was stressed because of the bubbles, prisms and flashing lights. I feel like I am in a constant sensory overload. It's really nice to know that I am not the only one going through this. Watching this video just made my day. Thank you so much. I deeply appreciate this.
You are most welcome! It’s comforting for me to know I’m not the only one experiencing something too. I completely understand the sensory overload thing. My CBS sometimes can be so distracting.
Just finished Oliver Sacks' book 'Hallucinations', it has a really good chapter on Charles Bonnet the man, and the condition.
Really insightful, he's a good author, takes great pains in normalizing and humanizing a range of unique experiences.
I will definitely need to check that out! Sounds like a fascinating read. :)
Thanks! for the informative video. My mom is in her nineties and has CBS since she was diagnosed with macular degeneration. It happens mostly in a room with lots of windows but happens in her bedroom too sometimes. She sees strangers, police, myself and my brother, dead relatives, animals such as dogs and cats. Her most alarming visions are those of myself and brother being violently ill or injured. She sees things inside the room and outside. Thanks again, best of luck to you.
Thanks for the donation Mark! I am thankful my CBS does not include that much detail! That sounds like it could be very disorienting and frightening seeing people that aren't there.
I have glaucoma and my relationship with Charles Bonnet went like this: It was only for a couple of months, when I closed my eyes I saw a single large solid bright-yellow asterisk (think of the WalMart logo). It would float down from out of my field of vision and wind up in central vision. It would stop when I opened my eyes. It started during a period in which I had flashes in my peripheral vision and after about two months it completely ceased and has never returned. Sometimes I actually miss it because it was quite entertaining.
Hello! I have AMD and have been having some vision issues as well and on Thursday of this week I will see my eye doctor to speak about these crazy happenings. I see the orbs, I even had a picture of my grandmother float past my face and I sat there in wonder as to what was happening. I am afraid that my doctor is going to think I am crazy. Thank you so much for making this video I feel like such a relief if anything.
I hope your appointment went well! It's such a common thing for folks with vision loss and we don't really talk about it much because it does sound crazy! But rest assured you are absolutely not crazy. It's something that may fade with time or you will get used to it. :)
Thank you so MUCH!!! My appointment went amazing. The doctor knew exactly what was wrong, verified it for me, and signed my "certified blind" paper so I can get some other benefits. Thank you. This organization saved my sanity and put me on a good path. Well, I'm still without sight but it's a little easier now. Thank you.
Thank you for educating us and for sharing your personal experience with this syndrome. I always enjoy your videos.
Thanks Beth! I’m glad you enjoyed it. :)
This is really interesting! ❤️ I'm glad you've found ways to not let it interfere too much with your everyday life. I have retinitis pigmentosa but still have a somewhat decent level of sight, although I can't drive and I'm utterly hopeless at nighttime! I do sometimes experience what you describe as a 'lens flare' type impression or image, even if I haven't looked at anything bright. They usually go away within thirty seconds and they don't hurt but they are another reminder that I'm losing my sight.
Thanks for sharing! I’m glad to find someone with a similar experience. From what I’ve heard, the electric lights and fireworks are the most common one but I’ve never met anyone with that!
Thanks
My sister has macular degeneration and her visions/hallucinations are extremely difficult on her. She has visual scenes that play out. Some are terrifying and some are not, She knows they are not real but it sometimes hard for her to differentiate between reality and hallucinations. She lives alone and when her sight was good, she dealt in hospitality, so she was surrounded by faces. I am doing all can to research this for her but there isnt much in the US as in the UK. My heart hurts for all that she goes through.
This is a very interesting topic! Thanks for sharing. Thinking back, I don’t believe I have experienced it personally, but I have experienced a lot of similar symptoms. For example, I will often think that some thing in my vision is something else because of the non-detail and color. It is notorious for me to think that things are people when they are not. For example, a puddle, or a lamp post, or a bush could easily be perceived as a person. I think in that case, it’s less of a hallucination and more my brain trying to make sense of non-detailed objects.
I did get lots of fireworks when I was young and still get a ton of flashes when I walk into a bright room. Sometimes it looks like static and other times it’s flashes of tendrils of light. But since it seems to be related directly to light, I have always assumed it is what is left of my photo receptors being very upset at the brightness. When I was young, I did used to do that thing you were never supposed to do and would push the palms of my hands into my eyes. It would cause flashes and fireworks, but my parents were very quick to dissuade me of that. I also often get large dark spots in my vision if I have been looking into a bright light source, but again, I think in my case these are all caused because of easier to understand factors. But who really knows! Thanks for the great video.
Hi Skye! Yeah I've definitely experienced a lot of that too! Thinking something is something else when I see a big dark blob somewhere. I don't consider these hallucinations either as I'm of the same mind as you! I think my brain is trying to figure out what something is with minimal to no information. I also get what you say when I go into bright spaces but for me it is again slightly different than the electric shapes and blobs I see everywhere. It could be my retina, my optic nerve or my brain mis-firing and it's definitely hard to figure out! I can't wait until science can completely make sense of a lot of the sensory things we experience. :) Hope you and Cindi are well.
My childhood visual when eyes closed before sleep is riding color roller coaster and its fun.
Harley here - Never knew this existed! My blind eye is the one that commonly experiences hallucinations - I was a that diagnosed with schizophrenia because of those. I'm now wondering if I was misdiagnosed.
Hi Harley! Wow! Definitely something to chat with your doctors about!
I've read about CBS several years ago, but I don't think I ahve ever experiencewd it. Just like others mentioned my brain will fill up details that my eyes can't see.
Thanks for sharing your experience! I have definitely experienced that too, especially when I had more vision. Are used to think I’ll kinds of things were people or chairs when they were something entirely different, like a jacket or, a potted plant. I think at this point my eyes don’t really know what they’re looking at and my brain can’t really guess at what might be there most of the time anymore.
I was just diagnosed with it my eye doctor told me not to freak out it was great he was like it’s normal and it will happen but I realize like you I have had it along time
I’m glad your doc normalized it for you! 😊
We see from our spirit
Great video! I get green and purply-blue squiggles every time I get a laser treatment. So far, they only last a couple of days as my eyes heal. When I am very tired, I get white sparkling lights in my peripheral vision. I will happily see colors and lights if it means I get to keep more of my usable vision, though! How fun would be to see historical figures! It's would be like "Night at the Museum".
This is a great topic, I never heard of it. Thank you for teaching and sharing!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! :)
Huh, I wonder whether this has anything in common with the way sighted people can hallucinate in darkness/when their eyes are closed. My vision is fine, but I've always had some sort of visual noise in the dark. One of the things that shows up for me somewhat frequently is very similar to what you describe-blue blobs that move and twist and float around (often turning into rings or waves, or right now it's like a long tunnel that's twisting and shifting around). I think I recall there being more colors when I was a kid. So far as I know it's pretty normal to have some degree of that. More recently I've also developed visual static and a tendency to see people or animals that aren't there at night or in poorly lit places (I'm aware that they're not real, but like you said they can be startling). Obviously it doesn't affect me the way CBS would, but it would be interesting if it was the same mechanism
That’s really interesting! Thanks for sharing your experience. What you see in the dark is what I seem to get all the time. I’m now curious too. There’s still so much we need to learn about perception and how the brain works.
I get this too, I have a lot of geometric shapes that rotate round in a pattern, usually electric blue. I get strobe flashing too. Very annoying when I’m trying to sleep.
I fee flashes of light. Sometimes, it is scary.
It can certify be disconcerting can’t it!
I'm experiencing this right now
You are absolutely radiant 🥰
I have it and I see fireworks 24/7 until I go to bed
It’s an interesting phenomenon to see things that aren’t there!
I dont know if you have any artistic inclination, but these hallucinations sound like they could be really interesting to make into paintings!
That’s an awesome idea! If I could see enough to paint what I saw I think people would think it looks really cool! Maybe an idea for something I can do in the future with Robbie.
@@UnsightlyOpinions absolutely! I'm sure you wouldnt be the first blind person to paint! you could always get someone to help you out, lots of artists have people assist them 😀
I see the spots like u do
I was wondering if Charles Bonnet Syndrome can manifest itself as seeing flashes of what a person happens to be looking at occuring in different points of a persons field of vision. I've had double vision from a very young age and have learned to ignore it for the most part. I offer deal with extreme near sightedness, floaters, and flashers. Recently though the double vision has began to behave in the way I described. Could this be CBS?
I see random light flashes sometimes. Mine are blue, purple, pink, and yellow.
Very cool! I’ve never gotten those hot colours like red and yellow. It must look like a fun rainbow. :)
While I don’t think I’ve experienced CBS, it’s likely going to be a matter of when rather than if. Although sometimes I do swear that I see things out of the corners of my eyes which to me look like people and I think it’s the same person I’m in the room with. Only after talking to them and not responding to me do I realize it’s not that person. Instead I’m getting a reply from behind me lol.
I think all of our minds sometimes play tricks on us. I know many folks with visual impairments who are stationary objects like chairs as people. It happened to me quite frequently when I had more vision too!
5 russian astraunats saw winged figures in space and all five saw them on salyut space mission in1985
I have CBS too. I see cats in the periphery of my vision.
That’s really interesting! Thanks for sharing :) Do they move on you or are they just there sitting?
@@UnsightlyOpinions It depends on how awake or tired I am. Sometimes they sit near me, sometimes they are walking or running around. It’s not always the same cat. When it started they looked like some of the cats I’ve had previously in my life but now can look like any cat.
They often move around and a few times I’ve felt them brush up against my legs.
What is the part of the brain where it happens? Visual cortex?
Although it’s not very well understood, it’s thought that the hallucinations result from the brain not receiving adequate visual input or interpreting visual signals improperly. So you are likely correct that it’s the visual cortex that creates these images.
