  • This past week as been nothing but a disaster for the Columbus Crew organization. The club announced a rebrand to Columbus SC...and well, let's just say that didn't go as they expected. Here are my thoughts on the new look for Columbus.

I can only agree with you, Anthony!
As a German following the MLS and your content, I don´t get these stupid rebrands at all.
That inaugural crest with the three guys wearing hard hats was so epic! When FIFA introduced Ultimate Team and you could choose a crest for your squad, almost everyone chose that Crew one!
At least investors have come a step towards fans, still that new crest is pretty ugly. That one in the upper right corner at 15:01 is looking pretty dope, that´s what designers should have come up with!
Anyways, you´re producing amazing content. Keep it up man!

Great video Anthony! Its sad that trems are leaving their own historic identity, especially for a club like the Crew with a great name & identity along with so much history. I view them as the Green Bay Packers of the MLS (Has history, great fanbase, identity connects with the people & city’s history etc.). This new wave of europeanizing MLS teams identity is bad for MLS and growth of the sport, we really need to see the opposite happen soon. Keep up the great content

So Ohio's swallow tail pennant is an amazing flag and in a vacuum its a great idea to incorporate it into a team logo. And in fact the new 'C' in the pennant does look nice.....
But there was no need to rebrand when your old logo is unanimously beloved by not just the fans but across the league.
This pennant design could've been like an alternate logo, while not common that is a thing some teams do. Or it could've just been used as a tag like on the back of jersey just below the collar or on the front near the hip or maybe on the sleeve. Like I would want to see this logo more, but not at the cost of checkerboard.

I understand the "lets be original" approach, however, if you go too original, you are going to look like a clown to the outside world. Somes names of the past like Clash, Wiz, Metrostars were cringe to the outside. There should be a balance between original and traditional names, good examples of these are: Sacramento Republic FC, Philadelphia Union, Phoenix Rising FC, IMO these is the path MLS should go.

LAFC and NYCFC also make sense to difference themselves from New York RedBulls and LA Galaxy. LA Galaxy represents the LA suburbs, LAFC Represents the actual city. NY RedBulls rep the New York Metro area, NYCFC is fron the City proper.

SKC def needed a rebrand as they were in dire times. And even tho the NYRB rebrand is controversial it all worked out. It’s all about knowing your own situation Imo. I’m a rapids fan and I def don’t think we need a rebrand bc Kroenke (yeah the guy that owns arsenal) is so damn cheap and refuses to spend the money to get us well known throughout the entire state. Marketing means a lot especially ina saturated market like Denver. Rapids are 5th on the totem pole behind the Rockies who can’t even keep a star player and never wins shit. All Kroenke needs to do is spend the money and we’ll get more support kinda like when tim Howard first came over the first year and we almost made it to mls cup in 2016. Even playing in commerce city which is outside denver won’t hurt us contrary to common narrative of needing downtown stadiums.

I became a casual fan of the Crew when I moved to the Columbus area in 2004, I first saw this rebrand on Pardon the Interruption, and I was in complete shock. While I liked the original and I was okay with the first rebrand, this was completely out of left field. It's hard to accept the new brand, but I was more thankful they kept the Crew name. Ditch the name and you truly ditch the identity of the team.

Well put together thoughts and video. Branching off from the deception and exclusion of supporters, the front office also put those in Nordecke leadership in an undesirable position. They were asked by other supporters why they didn't do more to quell this and why they didn't share this information at large. NDA agreements played a large part in this, very purposefully. The front office did not want to give us the opportunity to organize and mobilize.

  • @h8sjws735
    @h8sjws735 3 года назад

To be fair, save the Crew rolls off the tongue far better than save Columbus, but yeah, the second badge and rebrand worked and was an improvement imo. This badge is horrible and removing Crew from the name just isnt right or necessary. I get and like the European style in naming teams, but with the American nicknames attached and prominent. MLS has gotten as much wrong as they have right, but I was around for the first big time league in NASL, and while I may not like MLS marketing or branding in some instances, it seems a solid foundation is being laid. Hiccups and missteps aside, Im diggin the growth of the league and hopefully we will become a true world power in soccer during my lifetime.

The GM is trying to create an international brand not a local following because Columbus is a marketing desert. GM trying to sell jerseys online. A Gyasi Zardes White or Black Jersey would sell very well internationally. Gyasi's appearance is marketable because you know who it is immediately when you see his hair.. Yellow jerseys don't sell period. Thats all this is. Marketing to sell Jersey's. Odell Beckham Jr's NY Giants Jersey was top selling because of his play, antics, and hair color. Marketable.

Tbh honest my biggest beef with MLS is that they are FRANCHISES not clubs. It feels like nothing matters when the owners can move the club to another city if they wanted to. I feel like clubs should built from the community. I think MLS will always be a joke. It does not feel natural when a team can just BUY into the league. I mean want history does those clubs have anyway.Just my opinion.

The name Columbus SC is more marketable internationally. Football clubs need international sales of merch and sponsors to survive. What happens when GM networks to international business? He shows the club resume and a photo or a video of Gyasi Zardes with his blonde frohawk in the Columbus winning 2020 MLS championship. We can get Gyasi to sell your product. Gyasi is a role model. Etc. See how that works?
