Ted and Alice Sliger were part owners of the Mammoth gold mine in Apache Junction. The area was near the Goldfield ghost town tourist stop (cool place!) built and owned by Bob Schoose(very cool guy! thank you Bob for preserving a small part of Arizona history!). Alice said the group couldn't make a go of the mine because gold was only $35 an ounce back then. Some major league baseball teams would visit the baths when they were in the area for spring training. Alice said her and Ted homesteaded the land and when drilling for water, hit the hot spring. Instead of cursing their luck, they turned lemon into lemonade. Alice was such sweet lady!
Buckhorn Mineral Baths just sold. I was in there in the 1960s. The baths are hot bubbling mud. A natural spring runs underground. Its cool inside. Full of taxidermy. I now live a few miles north of there. I will feel sick if they tear it down. Its fun to look at.
It would be a crying shame to see this ol jewel go to the name of progress. So many old landmarks have been torn down that were a unique part of the valley. The saddest day was the day the very old saguaro that was on McDonald dr. and Invergordon rd. Was removed. It looked like a grandparent with its legs crossed and had a segment growing on the top of one of the ones that swooped down appearing like legs. It reminded me of grandpa bouncing his grandchild on his knee. That saguaro was ancient. I'd say it had been there before the first settlers even discovered the new world. It's just sad to see old memories fade away.
Hi. I recently just moved to Mesa and all I'm saying is I cant wait to go see this place. I drive by it every day and it is actually still running somewhat. Some of the back rooms have electricity still and there are always cars there too.
Yes, my friends and I explored there tonight. There are very old cars and new. In the backrooms, there was a new refrigerator plugged in outside the door, and other new things like plastic chairs stacked up. In one of the major buildings, the door was not locked but had a bored after we opened it and we could hear voices inside. Also, when we tried exploring the cottages we saw one had lights on inside. We tried to walk up to the cottage but a light turned outside directly on us, probably motion censored. I'm not sure who lives there now but I would be very curious to see what its like inside!
My great Aunt Alice built the Buckhorn Mineral Wells with her husband. She lived to 105. I stayed there once when my Grandma died. Cool place. Sad to see it in such disrepair.
That's an awesome place, too bad it's not alive and jumping, too bad it's clothes I mean people are always on the street wanting to rest want a place to rest and it looks like a little tropical little resort there, it could come back, the right person to take it over if the owner wants to sell thanks for showing us this place I would have never knew this place existed 🥰👍
They had a museum of desert animals from rattlesnakes to coyotes to rabbits plus a few mtn. Lions . The mineral hot baths were in the rear of the building . Not the best upkeep but it was something for Arizona an it's history. Velda Rose drive in movie was across the street . Lots of good memories. #ArizonaNative
I have correspondence from a woman that was receiving therapy at Buckhorn to her husband in Arkansas .Circa 1940 thru 42 It consists of about 40 cool old postcards. Interesting inside look. Read that property is sold to developers.
Noisey place for sure, but kitchey....lots of ambiance. Paint a'peelin'. In its day, must have been really cute. Could have used some green space in center of parking lot?? Hope it gets rescued. Needs tlc and lots of work. Sounds like the wildlife are lovin' it.
#AdventuresinAZ, Super vid of a great old place.. It's too bad, not just Mesa/East Mesa but, Phx. Historical Bldg. Society didn't try to save, at least, parts of it. It's an icon of that part of Phx. metro area.. Lol, I remember going there as a kid in the 60's, years before I moved here.. I had no idea it had closed, saddened... Thank You for documenting & sharing... I like the guy's idea of a photo shoot of classic old cars before it's torn down n' gone forever.
I went there years ago with a few friends.. Paid $17 to soak in the springs. seemed like a lot since is only $5 in T or C, NM. I am have always loved hot springs, been to many!
I went to elementary school with Ted Sliger Jr. back in the early 1960's and later, high school at Westwood high in Mesa. Played around the motel and with Teds horse, Old Paint. Good memories. Would love to see this awesome landmark preserved of everyone to visit. Hope it can happen somehow.
I just passed by there today. I live off the 101. 12miles away. Took a few pics but didnt walk in. There are alot of signs saying KEEP OUT, NO TRESPASSING etc. I just walked around outside.
10/13/19....WOYLD make great small apt rehab with mini-kitchen/ efficiency unit put along 1 wall.... I understand asbestos there so prob WHY it hasn't been bought up/rehabbed by small realtor/ investor. I would love to come out & help restore/rehab with the right partner with funding..... But I'm sure local mayor/commissioners/building code ppl would "put up a fight" & yet THEY just let it sit there & lose more value/poss of rehab daily!
Never knew the city planned to buy it. I did read that about a year later from your posting it sold August 2017. Pretty cool. Owners were Alice and Ted Sliger. Alice died at age 103 in 2010, and her husband, Ted, died in 1984. Ted Jr still lives somewhere in Arizona.
Why don't you mention the garden area with the wall made out of old metates (indian grinding stones) ? This place should be made historical and it should be restored. I can't believe anyone would let this place go to waste. SMH
not squatters. there is 24 hour security that works there since its in tweaker central. I'm surprised you weren't told to leave. I got yelled at the 2 times I tried to go on property.
I don't know when this was shot.. possibly just a year ago (it's Oct. 2017) but I just drove by there and MOST if not all of the windows are boarded up and there are weeds everywhere. I think after the deal went south with the city, and the preservation society, it really started to deteriorate more. The museum part is still there, but closed, of course. ONE old truck with a camper out back, and I think the people were living in the camper, not any of the rooms. Even the sign out front is deteriorating badly, not much paint left on the lettering, and what is left, is hanging by a thread. If I recall, it basically can't be restored or used due to what they now call "environmental hazards" (asbestos added in the 60's, quite possibly) without a huge expense, or actually tearing it all down and rebuilding. Quite a shame really. I imagine at some point the area will grow (like every other part of the valley) and someone buy it, tear it all down and put up a strip mall or a Walmart, or the like.
Breaks my heart to see this happening. It's a forever memory and so much a part of history. The baths were awesome along with the staff you felt like you were family. You are right a big box store/restaurant will take it's place. So much of our history is gone.
Too bad this wasn't fixed up and open again I know I would go visit it and others that I know would. It is a shame!! I think the owners are retired and I think they have family that could run it after its restored if it can be. But there is other things that are around that could be added I miss that stuff!! I would love it if they had the legion city and the wax museum us kids had a blast when they were open!!!
There is a difference between "vacant" and "abandoned". This is obviously not abandoned, especially since you state it was for sale. Someone was looking after it, or it'd have been in much worse shape with vandalism and litter. Vacant is not abandoned. Just sayin'. Still a neat video.
I'm really surprised with the economy picking back up that some smart realtor hasn't bought it and got it going again. It still looks to be in pretty good shape. I would try to get a contract with the pro sports teams!
The one story building structure really does look like the Bates Motel from the movie Psycho! A little modification to the "H" in BATHS and you have the BATES motel : l
I’m a native of the Valley and I grew up in West Phoenix. I have driven past that hotel literally hundreds of times through work or going to the river during the course of my life and always wondered what that place was like. Thanks for the video !! I’ve never seen anything except the front part. The geology behind the place is there are still relatively shallow hydrothermal pockets there that heat the aquifer that feeds the spring below the hotel. That in itself should make this place a historical district. Sadly our state government would gladly raze the whole place and turn it into a parking lot if the legislators could make a buck. At least you documented what was there.
Sadly the last few minutes show why this is abandoned, wish stuff like this could be saved, but the reality is they are just too far gone, people and building codes say no way...
Those are not squatters. Most of them lived there before it was closed and they have lease agreements. I met many of the residents when I ran for Arizona Governor is 2014 and picked up a few ballot petition signatures. jlmealer.com . Sad the place closed up, but I understand the Mesa PD is helping an ex-politician/pay-to-play type of guy (company) get ALL of the local hotels for some sort of huge scheme they are putting together. Firsthand news (to me) from multiple hotels. However, Buckhorn has been wiped out for a long time when it should have been a large tourist attraction -in a sense. My dad use to take the family there decades ago. It's a shame the Mesa PD would help the corrupted City Council destroy businesses so some guy and his company can make millions.
I had the pleasure of soaking here before must of been in the 70’s always hoped somebody would bring it back but i figured the family was holding out for big money. I always considered this Apache Junction but what do I know, eventually as the metropolis spreads out it will probably be mowed down and apartment complexes built over it , so sad truly a piece of History
Okay, my Dad literally lives less than a half mile from there. He is 77 and from what he has told me they will most likely end up bull dozing it, if they already haven't. What makes it sad, to him also, is the rich history of stars and officials from all over the world who visited at one time. You can research it, heres the last article with photos and some background if you want to know more. Wow, natural hot baths sound good.

The garden is still nice. Would have been an enjoyable place at one time.
I'm in Mesa quite often and I've passed this frequently. Very cool video. Sadly the property has deteriorated since this vudeo.
It would be so cool for new owners to rehab that building and restore it. Thanks for the video!
Oh that's sad is the hot springs still there

The place still appears kept up and free of vandalism. Arizona is filled with treasures worthy of saving.
I have been there a long time ago
Lived in that motel for a couple years of my life... some of the best memories I have of my childhood
I live right down the street from here and have always wanted to take a closer look at it. Thanks for the upload and giving us a view of it!
Same😊

I think it looks pretty clean the grounds at least, beautiful property
So sad this place could probably have been a tiny home village
I used to do security across the street from this area. I never knew how far back it went. It looks like it was a happening place back in the day.
I live a few miles from there. Always been intrigued about this place. Great video! Thanks!!
Any updates in 2022?

awesome!!!
Cool place! I love to stay at funky retro hotels and motels.
I met the old lady that owned it years ago. She owned it for at least 50 years
Very cool video. I'm surprised to see the place still in pretty decent condition!
It's because the original owner lived to be 105 and her son never left home. They maintained it.
It's big claim to fame was Teddy Roosevelt would go there for the mineral baths. in the 1920's and 30's
Theres nobody there now.
I love exploring Arizona!
It can become an obsession that consumes you.
mesa, az.......
Should start the not waitin around .

What's happening to a lot of places like this is their turning them into apartments.

We are visiting for CA during the Thanksgiving weekend and want to check this out. Is it still there? Had they demolished this?
It's been sold to developers, probably will be demolished.
Well the squatters must pack up every thing and leave every morning, I haven't seen one squatter yet.
That would be so much more relaxing then a Motel 8 or a Hilton
Squatters everywhere......except there. Didn't see any sign of squatters.
Never knew the city planned to buy it.

Hey how do I contact them about this?

My grandma had some business there and took me along when I was 12. It really gave me the creeps back then and I couldn’t wait to leave.
Wasn't this place still doing business in the '90? I recall seeing more cars parked both in the front & back.
Dewey Needitt it sure was .
Did the springs dry up? It's a shame this can't be made into a retro motel.
Nope. The spring is still flowin!
Thanks AinA. All the more reason to rebuild
Great video
The one story building structure really does look like the Bates Motel from the movie Psycho! A little modification to the "H" in BATHS and you have the BATES motel : l
You're right!! Didn't think of that! Great eye...
They even have the front lobby walls covered in taxidermy, as was Norman Bates hobby.
It is missing the porch off of the front now.

Are you allowed to walk around like that? I'd love to see this place in person as I live literally 2 streets away.
Lance Marshall no not really. The police patrol it frequently. No trespassing signs everywhere.
I live in Mess and quite often I see cars parked at the cabins in the back

Smooth camera work
I pulled in here one night and rented a place the rooms were all filled up there was one in the back that was empty so they put me in that room woke up in the middle of the night and saw Spirit watching me pretty crazy place
- how old is the place?
It was opened in 1939.
- Thanks.
Who was driving the pickups? workers?
You need a writer man.Put some thought and research into product.
"Just dust in the wind". said it twice". Hggh!?
They may have rentals to reduce vanadals.
Looks like new owners are making it a restaurant... makes zero sense.
This place is in better shape than the motel across the street called miles motel.. miles motel should be shut down by the health department I don't understand why it hasn't been done yet. It's infested with bed bugs and roaches and electrical wires hanging everywhere and all of the rooms smell like mildue and ashtrays. They only have 1 working washer and dryer to wash all of the sheets and blankets which they rarely ever wash that stuff.. The Mesa PD is working with developers to shut down the Miles as well as other local motels along with the Buckhorn so it can be bought cheap and developed into something they can make millions from
Thats cause the miles motel is full of junkies..
a mcds or cvs?
they are NOT squatters. the owners know they are there.
The owners, are dead. An have been. For many years
The Avenue Shoppes LLC bought the 15.62-acre property on the northwest corner of Main Street and Recker Road for $2.15 million according to a 2017 article. They are not sure what they are going to do with the property.
Mesa PD is helping city council push out many of the local motels for some big scheme they are putting together with a developer.
hoping another mcds or cvs?
Good... Push them all out, they bring nothing but these scum zombie like tweakers walking main day and night stealing everyone's stuff for their next fix. Would love to see main rid of the crack hotels.
I'd love to do a photoshoot here. I could easily get several classic cars, few models and photographers, and make it a day photoshoot.
Where was all the squatters u was talking about??? There were several doors open on the room , why didn,t u at least look in ??.other than that it was a pretty good video
virginia alvarez He was probably too occupied studying your fantastic grammar.

You get your kicks...on Route 66...
You better believe it!!!!
Add solar power, some type of gardening and this would be great for communal living!
Your voice is fine. Just don't do the weird inflection. "was once....thriiiiving." you no what I'll just shut up, just keep doin what your doin.
galiffrey1 will do! Thanks..
Yeah I agree it's a great video but the guy making the video could have a little more respect for the history he seems like he is almost mocking at times... it is not cute... just unprofessional and childish
Nice place but boring video, you could have put the camera at the windows so we could at least see something inside.
Tia Keas use your imagination. My guess: 4 walls and misc. furniture...
shut up please, you go out there and look tjrough the window, big dummy.
click bait. I see no squatters!
paul solfelt wow... you got me!! Do you not see all the cars in the back ?? They are living in the casitas without permission....
AYE OHNGREE . . .
Feels like home l8r . .
People could live there homeless
this makes me sad to see this because with all the homless and family's that need help this sickens me
for taxpayers to pay for the utilities and whatever.
starr light you could always open your home or private property up to homeless people to rid away some of that sickness you're experiencing. Maybe cut a bigger check to the IRS as well. I imagine those who are in need would really appreciate your kindness...
Frank Sells why don't you do the same for Vets... Or do you not care about our Vets?
get over it
It makes you sad? the homeless would only trash that place up and do drugs and u want them to live there for free?
Who owns this now??
GRAPES OF WRATH movie set huh?
PLEASE!!!!!! turn it into a gay hot spa.
