Yes you are correct on that. Thanks for that. I will note this on my blog post. The safety click for some reason takes a fair amount of force if you ask me though.
Loving this lens. I’ve seen so many reviews saying the hood doesn’t stay attached and I thought it to be true until I accidentally turned it all the way and it clicked lol. Awesome walk around lens, and I’m loving shooting with it. Was lucky enough to find this as it’s backordered and even being resold used for more than the retail price. Awesome lens
Like others have said…the lens hood does lock very firmly into place…just keep turning the lens hood until your hear the click. The lens barrel does move in and out a little, but inside the lens hood. To protect the barrel, I won’t be using mine without the lens hood and a 52mm UV filter. It is a very sharp lens! The lens noise during certain focusing situations is not loud, and barely noticeable. It doesn’t make the slight noise in every focusing situation. But, I use this lens for street photography so this is not an issue at all. Overall, so nice to be able to have the pancake lens!
Thanks for the comment Richard. Yes it’s great for street photography. Sounds like there are variations in the noise from what I’ve read from others. Mine was pretty loud-enough so that you can hear it in the video. Glad you’re enjoying it though! 👍
Really nice blog, keep up the work. Now that I have the 26mm on a Z8, I'm looking for a day pouch to take with it. Any recommendations? Thanks again, Don
Great question! It depends on how far out you place your MKE 600 on the shock mount. If you place the microphone on the shock mount at the very end, the tip of the wind muffler will show just a bit. But if you pull the microphone back even ever so slightly from that point, you won't see the tip anymore. Having said that, I didn't check without the wind muffler. Seeing as it does extend the microphone length a bit, you may be ok without the wind muffler on!
The aperture is only one stop faster, i don't think it is necessary. And as for image quality 24-120 S is already superb. But I'd get it for myself to pair with my 40 f2 and 70-200 to expand to wider focal range.
Two different lenses for different purposes. I have the Z 24-120mm f/4 S lens and I love it for my walk around lens too. It's just a little larger and heavier. I do find it to be sharper than the 26mm f/2.8 too though. It just depends on if you want a smaller and lighter lens versus a heavier and bulkier one with a zoom range.
I don't have personal experience with the Z 28mm so I can't comment, but I hear that it doesn't make any focusing noise so in that respect it might be better.
Great question but unfortunately I don't have personal experience with the Z 28mm so I can't say for sure. It might be worth a try at your local store if they have the two lenses in stock.
From the official MTF chart, compared to 28mm I think the 26mm is sharper at the center, but slightly worse at the corners. Seems like sharpness won't be the key to choose between the two lenses, but other optical quality or lens design details such as fringing and whether resistance .
On a positive note, it helped to overwhelm the focus noise. I got my copy a couple weeks ago and that is my only real complaint. Switching to AF-S made it significantly less annoying but I would hardly call it “quiet” as they advertised. (“This quiet drive system makes the lenses ideal for use when shooting video.”). I am still undecided if it is worth the cost and noise over the 28 just for the slightly smaller footprint.
Yes, I mentioned this on my blog but not in this video. It does depend on what you want to use it for though. 39mm isn't too wide for a landscape lens, but could be good for street or video usage...if you can live with the AF noise.
The Lens hood does click on just keep on turning it till you hear it lock click. Great Video.

@@taku_kumabe I found it takes a bit of force the first time, but is much easier after 5-6 times mounting and unmounting.
Found that out by accident while turning the cap. One the first day I was worried it would fall off lol. Awesome lens

Nice little lens - if I didn’t already have the 28mm f/2.8, I’d consider this one for sure. 🤙🏼
Yup, that 28mm f/2.8 sounds good enough!
The hood does click in place. Not sure why yours doesn't.
Mine actually did-found out after doing this video. It was just really hard to to click into place. I mentioned this on my blog.
Taku did you try this lens with your MKE 600 on top? did is show up in the frame?

Thanks for sharing the review, very interesting and beautiful design!.
Thanks Kurt! I appreciate that!
Great Video Taku!
Thanks for watching AC!
Nicely done video - very much appreciated. Thoughts on adding this if I already have a 24-120 for walkaround photography?

How would you compare it to the Nikkor Z 28mm f/2.8 (SE)? Thanks!
I don't have personal experience with the Z 28mm so I can't comment, but I hear that it doesn't make any focusing noise so in that respect it might be better.
Marvelous!
Thank you so much!
Would you say that it’s sharper than the 28mm?
Great question but unfortunately I don't have personal experience with the Z 28mm so I can't say for sure. It might be worth a try at your local store if they have the two lenses in stock.
I have both and they’re both similar in sharpness. It really comes down to size and weight
My 26mm is noticeably sharper than the 28mm I just sold, better built as well.

The 26mm 2.8 is sharper than the 28mm 2.8 lens that I previously owned
How dare Nikon ship out the 26mm lenses before the 85mm! 🤬😂🤣 Don’t mind me, I’m just jealous. Great video!
heheh...
Great video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! Much appreciated.
👏🏻
Thank you kindly!
nice review, cheers!
Thanks very much Obed!
Good vedio but the music louder than your voice please no music or put down so we can understand. Thanks
Thanks for the comment. Noted!
@@taku_kumabe at 2:44 the music volume was about right. Before that it was indeed too dominant ;-) Thanks for the video

Nikon should make this lens manual only but f1.8-2 at least.
I actually think it is the perfect prime for APSC

This lens give sharp photos and it’s fantastic on my z5, I’m not really concerned with video capabilities great lens on full frame or apsc
bad sound quality - too loud music
Noted! Cheers!
I'll stick with my 28mm. Can't deal with the noise and the fact that the lens extends a little when focusing.. you don't get that on the 28mm
I don't have experience with the 28mm but I can understand where you're coming from. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the objective view, but your background music is unnecessary and far too loud.
Gotcha! Thanks for the feedback!
It does click, but it took me a year to see it.
It’s $180 (40%) more than the 28mm f2.8, not sure it’s worth it.
