@dicekolev5360 in the old days (80 ties, b/w HP5 Ilford film at 800 iso) I did 90 % of my streets with my 24 mm. Sometimes people were 1 - 3 meters away from me but they didn't care. Nowadays that is a no go I think.

26mm deals with shadows better, has smoother contrast, has smoother color transitions and is really soft/easy on the colors themselves out of camera, producing more pleasing colors out of the box, leaving you with less stuff to deal with in post. I don't shoot with wide angle lenses but I do try all the new lenses and if I were to buy a 20-30mm lens, it would be the Z 24mm over both the Z 26mm and 28mm.
the 24mm 1.8 is a completely different beast than the 26mm. Only because it's close to the focal length doesn't make it similar. For some people, size does matter.

Ok. It didn't need to exist because YOU have a 28. What was nikon thinking? Doug already has the 28. Wonder what else Doug has in his collection so Nikon can determine what to release next.🤔
Well, necessary? No! But nice to have? Yes! Is it the right time when there are other possible gap fillers in the lineup? No! I initially thought it was a DX lens which got me excited, but when I learned it was FX I scratched my head! In any case, I'm all in for a permanent lens cap with lens built-in that allows you to just grab you camera when go out on a casual shoot. A rather expensive cap!
Given that I don't have Nikon (actually I have my brother's D50 and D7100) but Panasonic and Fuji. I have Panasonic's pancakes used on the GH series. Their use is above all in the street (especially with the GX9) and on the gimbal by DJI, Manfrotto, Moza, Zhiyun and on drones due to its small size and weight which facilitate stability.
It seems like a pancake for the Z-fc users. I already own the 28mm, so I won't be swapping. But if I were buying that as a brand new kit today (i.e., with a discount to bring the price difference for body+28mm vs. body+26mm within $100-150), then yeah.
Thanks for the video review Matt! This 26mm lens is way overdue. This should have been released Year One to promote the compact feature of Z line. I have the 28mm and 40mm. I also bought a Fuji X100V before the 28mm lens and 40 mm lens. The Fuji meets my needs at a 35mm equivalent view and it fits in a jacket pocket. So Fuji received my money and Nikon missed out…for now. I’m not planning to get the 26mm lens right away. I’ll be in the “wait-n-see” mode for 1-2 years. Looking forward to the next video! 😃👍🏼
The X100V is a wonderful camera in so many ways in addition to the small size and weight. 35mm is the sweet spot, the built in ND filter and the leaf shutter are often overlooked by ILC users. No wonder it’s always on back order.
How about 14-30mm f4 close focus, better than these small prime and how about the 24-70 and 24-120, will their autofocus noise will caught on on camera mic? Seem like the 14-30 is better as everyday lens
Nice vid. Thank you for that. Very interesting. Another interesting thing is the timing of this release. It seems Nikon is planning to declare significant new product/s soon. Would one be an entry or mid level, street and fun body? Maybe... Or not. It's all speculations. We'll just need to be patient.
Would be good on the new Zf. Wondering how the 28mm compares with the 28-75 zoom. Thanks for the comparison, not much in it between them. BTW you have lost a ton of weight, looking much healthier 👏🇦🇺
It's a bit pricey if compared to the 28 indeed, but since I have the 28 I can wait. Wouldn't be surprised if it gets some decent discount at one point. Really would like this on the z30, together with the kit zoom. Perfect combo at home in my office bag which I carry all times. However, there's a DX 24 on the roadmap, slightly larger, but perhaps a bit faster (1.8?) and cheaper, too. Where it really would shine is on a z3 kind of camera, a z30 with FF sensor. Yes, I like to have all those options, and might end up with all 3 at one point. I hope there will be more of it, one even wider (18-20mm), one longer (60-90mm), compact, 2.8 or 3.5. Yes, there are other lenses which perhaps more people would like to have seen prioritized, but then perhaps this has to do with what they can currently manufacture more easily and what not.
@@mattgranger - yes and no. Yes, in a sense that the upcoming Dx lens will likely be cheaper and at 36mm f1.8 (perhaps ?) more suitable on a z30 body or the other Dx bodies than this 26 as a 39mm f2.8 on Dx. However, the Fx lens goes on both Fx and Dx bodies. However, what's really missing in my opinion for this 26er is a body to shine on - a Fx version on the z30. I would love such a 'z3', then that little 26er on it! Perhaps in a year or two, once Nikon has redone the z50/z6/7 to III and launched a z8 and a z70. I can wait, no problem.
You did not address the one and only problem I have with the 28mm, the chromatic aberration in contrasty situations. Otherwise, that lens was perfect for me, sharp at f/4 and lightweight.
I bought 26mm, already owning the 28mm SE. I am waiting to get it. I see this lens residing on my Zfc/Z6 versus a cap. I think the 28 f2.8 Z is a lovely lens, and will not be getting rid…heck, I still have my 28mm f2, f2.8 and f2.8 pancake ai lenses which I still use with my F film cameras on the regular. Part of why I like the 26mm is its very close to 40mm on my Zfc. Basically a pancake normal lens. To me, if you are on a budget, absolutely makes no sense to buy 26 over 28. But if, like me, you love owning lenses that give different results, its too fun to pass up!
Exactly the same thing for me. This was made for the Zfc to have a 40 mm 2.8 lens that is tiny. I would not use this one of a FF camera. Really applaud Nikon to give us Z fc shooters this gem.
not frustrated at all. nikkors can come out as slow as they want. its the third party lens schedule that frustrates me. altho sigma has 3 native z' lenses coming its not for full frame. sigh.
I believe Nikon missed the mark, this lens should have been a 23mm f/2 lens, which would have been an absolute hit for street photographers coupled with a cropped sensor Z body (35mm FF equivalent).
I got the 28mm f2.8 to supplement my 24-120 f4 S based on favorable RUclips reviews. Very disappointing and after a good try out it is not getting any use, Saving my drachmas for 35mm f 1.8 S. Heavier but I will live with that and stick to S.. Cheers.
Purchasing the 28mm and 40mm used would equal the price of this lens. I don’t get the pricing of the lens at all. Maybe if they were able to get it to be a F/2 with VR? I don’t see the need for this lens at all. And the autofocus noise is very bad.
Yeah, it does seem like a niche release. Personally, I would have much rather seen it the size of the lens plus the included hood/filter thread accessory with fully internal focus and a quieter focusing motor rather than this. Getting it as small as possible doesn't seem worth those compromises. I also would have rather seen the 28mm with a metal mount and a touch better optical quality rather than splitting features like they did. I have the 28 and it's fine, but would have paid a bit more for a better version of that lens to start.
I agree, and there are probably many factors involved with which lens has finished development, including glass type, element shapes, and actual designer.
Prime Lens is more expensive than the Zoom Lens. I also used Nikon camera for still Photography in Tropical conditions until I dropped it by accident. But It works fine and I am still using this wonderful monster.
Not really I will have preferred a 105mm 1.4 I say 1.4 because the 1.2 are super expensive and nonsensically big. One will tell that they are old Sigma Lenses and that people's preferences have not changed since those olden days.
For the frustration part, I can understand, but I think that Nikon will be releasing another body perhaps in the next month or so, and if it is in fact our "Z8" we have been hoping for, it's possible the 200-600 (which has also been long awaited) will be released around the same time, as both seem to sort of go together in some respects. It is rumored the 200-600 (if it is in fact that, and not something like a 100-500 or 200-500) is not going to be the typical S-lens (so possibly a variable aperture and cheaper build possibly but with "decent" optics) and the Z8 will be somewhat of a watered down Z9 so two pieces for the higher-end enthusiast market. I think Nikon also realizes that the Z II's are not quite viewed as prime-time sports cameras and so they decided to wait. The pro shooters are likely just going with the fast long telephoto primes (the 400's, the 600 and/or the 800 -- and are likely shooting a Z9) so they likely won't be as interested in the 200-600 or a Z8. But I think once Nikon does release the "Z8" or something similar, and the 200-600, then they'll circle back on things like the 24mm DX Z and a few other things (perhaps a 70-200 f/4, although there are rumors of a 70-180 2.8 to go with the 17-28 and 28-75 lenses, although again, that might be similar to what Tamron already has for the Sony E mount). But anyway, I feel that we have some good things coming this year from Nikon... one, possibly two bodies, and a long telephoto zoom. We already got the 85 1.2 and we might even see a 35 1.2 I believe as well (hopefully, although I won't buy one). Plus there were further rumors of even a 135 1.8 Z lens too. So I think if people can be a bit more patient, good things will come. I think Nikon has changed their attitutde towards product releases and are in most cases, going more with a "well through out, but perhaps less frequent" releases. And they're clumping releases together instead of doing them individually, like releasing the 85 1.2 and 26 pancake at the same time, versus separately. I suspect a Z8 (and even a high-end "Z80" and the 200-600 will be released relatively close to eachother as well since they likely will go together).
This lens (26) was pointless. They could've just made the 28mm more of a pro lens from the start. Bonus usage the 28mm on the Z7 in crop mode for video is crazy good...
This is ultra-portable general purpose lens. 28mm was a try but unsuccessful. This lens would shine if there would be body like Sony a7c. I need ultraportable camera and viewfinder is one thing I am willing to give up.
With $500 price tag it's DOA. A few people who want to pay that much for such low spec lens already got the lens shipped. I'm sure, Nikon will keep discounting this lens all the way to $300 before they get a positive response from the market.
It was ONLY made because of the vast, vast, vast number of people complaining that the Z line wasn't serious because it didn't have a true pancake lens. Why they wanted it? I have no idea aside from it being the current fad.
Let me say it like this, if the 26mm came out instead of another more crucial lens (for example a 70-200mm f4), then I would be frustrated. But that's not how it works, fortunately :) I have been considering the 28mm, but not sure whether I wanted a 24mm instead and then a 35mm to complement it. I also wanted something compact, so with the 26mm being that wider, I feel I can better defend getting a 35mm as well :)

I also would have rather seen the 28mm with a metal mount and a touch better optical quality rather than splitting features like they did. I have the 28 and it's fine, but would have paid a bit more for a better version of that lens to start.
This may come as a surprise, but not all lenses have the same develop time.
I agree, and there are probably many factors involved with which lens has finished development, including glass type, element shapes, and actual designer.
I got the 28mm f2.8. If nikon release a 24mm f2.8 pancake I will switch.
I completely forgot about the 28 mm. I would say that the 26 mm was not necessary at this point in time.
Oh yeaa CAT LOVER
It’s from a wild cat rescue charity in Namibia
Given the price of the 28mm, the 26mm is just too expensive.
That price pff…26mm
you can buy a S line for that.
This lens (26) was pointless. They could've just made the 28mm more of a pro lens from the start.
Bonus usage the 28mm on the Z7 in crop mode for video is crazy good...
nikon has 24s and 35s, skipped the 28s
Is it risky to buy grey import if something goes wrong Sony U.K. don’t fix it they have their own engineers. But you save a lot.
This is ultra-portable general purpose lens. 28mm was a try but unsuccessful. This lens would shine if there would be body like Sony a7c. I need ultraportable camera and viewfinder is one thing I am willing to give up.
Z30
Maybe I'm the minority, I would love Nikon to double its thickness to achieve f2/f1.8 instead of sacrifice aperture for size
With $500 price tag it's DOA. A few people who want to pay that much for such low spec lens already got the lens shipped. I'm sure, Nikon will keep discounting this lens all the way to $300 before they get a positive response from the market.
Haha you have zero facts and just wild speculations. It's the internet 🤣
Not necessary at all in my opinion and apart from a metal mount the 26mm has no benefit and is nearly double the price.
NO!! (with an echo!)
😂what is this? Why?
It was ONLY made because of the vast, vast, vast number of people complaining that the Z line wasn't serious because it didn't have a true pancake lens. Why they wanted it? I have no idea aside from it being the current fad.
Inspired by a certain song.
Nikon's pancake, huh, yeah
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing.
;)
1🎉
Let me say it like this, if the 26mm came out instead of another more crucial lens (for example a 70-200mm f4), then I would be frustrated. But that's not how it works, fortunately :)
I have been considering the 28mm, but not sure whether I wanted a 24mm instead and then a 35mm to complement it. I also wanted something compact, so with the 26mm being that wider, I feel I can better defend getting a 35mm as well :)
