I must say I find it disturbing the cost is higher for more expensive items ? WTF ? A grade fee should be the same for anything. This is why we get things graded , to find out their true value.

I agree about the Beckett website not being user friendly, I wish they would fix that as well.. But overall, I 100% prefer Beckett over PSA for my grading needs.. Keep in mind I collect cards from the late 70's and up, so I don't have anything from the 50's, 60's, etc.. And I agree, that when you see cards that are that old and have been graded, they are almost always graded by PSA and that is mostly due to them being around since 1991.. Beckett does have far superior cases than PSA as you did mention in the video.. PSA cases are cheap in both look and feel.. And the fact that they do not even sleeve their cards inside of the cases, drives me absolutely bonkers!! Even though it is ever so tiny, being able to see that card move around inside of the case should be illegal! Lol.. Also the subgrades make a huge difference.. No questions, you know exactly why the card received the grade that it did.. I would also tend to disagree about resale value.. Yes a PSA 10 will have more value than a Beckett 9.5 that received subgrades of 9, 9.5, 9.5, 9.5.. But, any Beckett that is a true Gem Mint or better, receiving quad 9.5's or higher, that I have ever seen, has always been in far better shape than any PSA 10 I have seen, and I have seen thousands of them.. I have seen way more instances where a PSA 10 would be lucky to receive a Beckett 9, let alone a 9.5, then I have the other way around.. So PSA is not as stringent as Beckett is, and this is a fact.. When I was in the hobby until about 20 years ago, BGS had the reputation of being the most stringent graders, and a lot of people preferred BGS because of that to PSA. PSA had the reputation of handing out 9’s and 10’s like candy, where a 9.5 or especially a 10 from BGS was truly something special.
its still like that though lol 9s are fairly uncommon, but sitll in the thousads, and 10s in PSa still come in frequently. I seen hundreds of cards. BUt BEckitt is so rare to have things above 8.5 grade, its nuts. There should honestly be even mroe stringest grades of .25 or .75 for precise card grading. Oh well lol
I like Beckett. Mainly cause 10s don't spit out like $0.25 gumballs like PSA. Something "prestine" shouldn't be so easy to obtain. I want them to be harsh with grading.
Watch out for PSA lots of the 10s are just people resubmitting their 9s cracking the case and resubmitting till they get an easier grader. Beckett all grades are final and if you get a 9 or 9,5 you can bet the house you won't get any higher
@@NeonKnight83 The fact that BGS does not and will not hand out 9.5 or a 10 unless the card can actually justify being rated either or with corners, edges, surface, AND centering. Stick to resubmitting 9s to PSA because they quite literally give out anything with 60/40 centering a 10 regardless of corners, edges, etc
Ture...plus the interesting thing the vid didnt mention, is he constantly goes on about PSa 10s being worth more than even a BGS 9 or 9.5...thats not true as the more accurate grading of Beckett technically makes their 9s the same as a PSA 10. And then onward, a Beckitt 9.5 that was put together well in the slab, would be like a 10.5 psa. And of course the rarest Becket 10 would be like a PSA 11...its that rare . :P
As someone who loves uniformity in my collection, I only buy PSA. I range from prewar to current cards and PSA is the only company that covers all. Great website and registry like you said. Very informative, good job
The best thing to do is buy cards already graded by PSA so that you do not actually have to deal with them. My customer service experience with Beckett and SGC is superior compared PSA. Thanks for your good video.
i think SGC double digit number was the most accurate way to grade the cards. the double digit grading numbers was copied from the coin and paper money grading. the simpletons like it 1-10 with half marks. i really like the SGC case holders with the black background. PSA is the market leader. its hard to catch up when they established majority of the market share so early on in the grading game. wished all grading companies utilized the beckett subgrading system. it sucks when you get a graded card and you don't know what the graders were thinking and why the card got discounted numbers.
Very nice break down for grading companies. I went with PSA when I started grading cards, mainly because they're in Cali about 50 miles away. Thought I'd get the cards back quicker. Wrong. I do wish they would let you know why a card graded as it did.

I'm mostly a PSA guy. But got a MONSTER deal on a SGC98 Gem 10 74 Nolan Ryan. Probstein offered $4500 off and then let me pay via consignment. PSA10 is pop 6. SGC98 Gem 10 is pop 1. Crossing to get a pop 7 makes no sense. Keeping the pop 1 SGC. Especially with the old label before the grading system switch.
A true Gem mint Beckett 9.5 with all 9.5 sub grades (which neither of yours has) sells for more than a PSA Gem mint 10. I've seen off centered PSA cards get Gem mimt 10 grades. Plus, if your PSA card grades an 8 or 9, you have no way of knowing why.

I think psa grades easier now days. A bgs 10 is hard to get now days and the chase for the black label even though it is a gimmick has really helped bgs black label would crush a psa 10 in sales
Nice video. Agree with many of your points. As much as I like the appearance of the SGC slab, the registry ends up calling me towards PSA much more often. I went with the new membership PSA offered this year where you get no free submissions. Just the access to specials and bulk pricing. Long term my expectation is eventually Beckett will buy out SGC.
I think you're right. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Beckett buys them out down the road. Maybe they'll keep the slick black insert but reinforce it with a Beckett strength case. But I am rooting for SGC, really great customer service.
You're wrong about Beckett bringing less money via resale. I've seen 9.5 beckett graded cards with all 9.5 sub grades go for much higher than the PSA 10 of the same card, over and over again on ebay. I have a collection of about 500 graded cards psa, beckett and sgc
Great break down. None are perfect but a necessary evil. PSAs major flawed moment was giving a grade to the most expensive card, honus Wagner. The auction house owner of that card admitted trimming it. PSA does not give numbered grades on trimmed cards.
Thanks for another video! (Probably relevant to point out that you 'prefer' PSA. I use all three equally.) Also, some inaccuracies, outdated info, or straight-up guesses, I'd like to clarify - PSA is not the "best", per se, they are the most POPULAR, and therefore they move on the market much more swiftly, mainly due to their superior/larger Registry. This will be difficult to maintain, as SGC and BGS continue to grade mass orders, however, PSA still dominates, and will for a while longer; unless! the recent controversies accelerate a lack of confidence, however, I think PSA will survive recent allegations (even if they're true). PSA has some down points, 1. the case is the weakest, 2. the label although updated very well/consistently, it is & has always been with a very distracting bright red outline, which distracts from the card, plus, the grades given are in relatively tiny print - an upgrade in this area would be prudent. Speaking of grades, PSA is the most lenient, and they are notorious for either not identifying altered cards (or worse, simply not noticing them). BGS/BVG is the best case (except that take up the most space), best labels, (which maybe 1 out of 100 the label moves out of it's pocket). You can re-submit, for FREE, and they'll re-adjust a falling label. Although the case is fantastic, it's susceptible to a careless owner, so your chances of buying a damaged case (on eBay) are equal to that of PSA or SGC. Beckett's website/registry needs a lot of work, but the good news is they're making strides in that area. Beckett's graders are DEFINITELY the best; they are meticulous, and altered cards never get past them, (in fact, they have a special label for said cards), as well, they grade the harshest (contrary to many PSA-loyal collector's opinions); if you have a BGS 10 Pristine, you have one of the best versions of that card, hands down. Also, their prices are comparable and often excellent, but you need to submit (preferably) 50+ cards at a time. SGC is fast becoming the best. They have by far the (actual) best case, and their newest all-black label (update: that ugly green is now history, thank goodness), with an updated large-font-single grade number, makes SGC likely the best going forward. The black frame they put around cards is not cardboard, it's actually a very durable plastic. True, you may get a smaller-sized card moving around, however, like BGS, they'll fix it for FREE. *If you're meticulous about grading accuracy, or you demand the highest scrutiny in this area & authentication, BGS/BVG is the obvious choice. If you care about the marketplace, and moving quickly (buying & selling), then PSA is still the king. However, I'm currently leaning towards SGC being the overall best, because of their improvements to the label, continued accuracy & great customer service, along with still the #1 case (easy to stack, same as PSA) in the business. I think Beckett (BGS/BVG which is 1980 and older) is a close 2nd, and PSA, while still the most recognized, continues to fall behind, little-by-little.
I have always preferred Beckett grading, I think the reason it fell behind so quick on vintage, besides the size of the slabs, was that is was grading Vintage too hard so drove the vintage collectors away until they came up with BVG. PSA has always been shady even from the early days with the Honus Wagner T206 trimmed card that they knew had been altered to all the trimmed and altered cards that are being exposed now. I think it will survive still because too many people have so much invested in PSA. Their registry has been far superior to the other companies so people can show off their ranking on sets and try to move up the ladders it makes it more of a game or a epeen show which card collectors love. SGC has always been popular for vintage graders too but no one uses them for newer cards.

This was a great video - I do prefer Beckett BGS for all my grading needs for Vintage & Modern / Great Customer Service & Quality of the cases seem more well put together.
SGC thru1915......SGC/PSA thru 1941......PSA 1947 thru 1997......BGS 1998 to Present ( these are my preferred) , but, I don't invest in 1998 to present...I collect newer HOF'ers 1998 but only if all the (4) 9's on a mint card show up...a BGS Pristine is highly sought after but, I don't play that game....I'll spend up to $100 on a modern card...and that's it. Learned my lesson on that new stuff...it's nice to have at the present but, for an investment...no way. Cards are collected because many collectors would like to see their cards go up in value but, 90% will bite the dust.
Websites for both SGC and BGS are just pretty lousy.... just the wrong font size all over the place compared to PSA which rocks the house with it's website clarity and attractiveness....PSA kills it with their website ...just a country mile better...Im surprised SGC has survived with their stogy customers and antiquated prices achieved for their graded cards...I run when I see SGC graded cards ~THE OTHER WAY. lol. The two card co.s are really PSA and Beckett..... Crossing over from BGS to PSA is another headache as most cards just dont achieve the minimum equivalent grade.....IF you have a BGS card that has quad 9.5 grades for a 9.5 GEM mint grade ~ the likelihood is less than 50% IMO that you will get a PSA 10 crossover result .... you really need to have at least 1 10 sub grade from BGS with 3 other 9.5 grades to have a shot.... and then its still crap shoot.... and ultimately you have to know the issue you are dealing with as say a 2017 Topps heritage is easier to cross over than say 2018 Topps Heritage b/c of the way the cards are made....nothing beats hands on experience and/but that costs crossover money!!
PSA also suffers for cards being loose inside the case. I have 4 damaged yugioh cards because they were loose inside the case and the card got stuck on the edge of the case inside, damaging the edge of the card

@@ronron26ny Also we need graders because the majority of sellers are not going to be reputable or well known, so by getting the grade from a reputable grader, it gives unknown sellers a chance to sell their cards for what they are actually worth.
I've always felt that the big three -- SGC, Beckett (NOT that BCCG garbage), and PSA -- are all essentially the same. Of note is that PSA is currently embroiled in a card trimming scandal that's been simmering under the radar for about a year.
PSA-Bad turnaround time. Customer service is good. SGC-Fair turnaround time. Customer service is good. The holder is my favorite. I use them for older cards and historical cards. BGS-Bulky, and I don't like the holder design or look. In the end- if you are grading older cards (like I do presidential cards), then SGC is a nice look. If you are wanting to grade for an investment, and resale, then PSA is the goto in my opinion. Can anyone tell me why people are going to Beckett for rookie autos these days?
Beckett has the best graders, by far (compared to PSA). SGC is the overall best (with their new look). And, PSA still dominates the market, because of the largest well-functioning registry. If PSA outsells (say, on eBay) it's because collector's aren't searching for SGC or BGS/BVG at all.
Thanks for the good work you did here. I have about 50 BGS graded cards which include Mantle's, Aaron's, Ryan's etc... from 50's, 60's and 70's. Graded about 10 years ago. I am getting back into the hobby. 2 questions. Still recommend PSA for similar cards from same era I have yet to grade? Any reason to break open the BGS graded cards and resubmit for PSA grading? Great video! A lot of value in just one video. I am going with PSA now because of the Beckett top part coming down and probably damaging the card. I do like the top part of it. BCCG does ruin their reputation of Beckett. I always wondered why they had different labels.
Basically Sports Cards that are turn of the century to the 1960s whether or not autographed, go with SGC. IF its a super rarer 1970s -1990s sports card, SGC might still be the way to go, but PSA could be too. PSa would do well for virtually any other card though. And unless you are absolutely sure you have a perfect GEM mint card, beckitt can sit it out. Though they are technically more valuable as they grade more stringently, making their cards rarer and more valuable. BUt yah: Old sports cards-SGC MOdern trading cards from 1970s ( star wars) to Magic the Gathering - PSA ONLY, and I mean ONLY if you have a card from the modern era (1990s onwards) that is really mint worthy, then go with Beckitt. A 9.5-10 BGS would be so rare to make up for it no matter what in the long run, plus that sturdier case. Screw the label taking a chance of coming off partly or completely as long as the card is super protected. lol
The only issue i have woth BGS is their turnabout time being nearly a year long. Sgc being way to obscure for the cards i grade. Leaving me with Either plan a 12 month turnabout or psa which at longest was 5,5 months
Yeah and the problem with those long turn arounds too is that people who submit prospect cards, sometimes by the time the card comes back those cards are worthless because the player tanked or an injury happened etc.
I probably trust PSA the most, but I am old timer so it could be because they been around longer. I like how Beckett breaks down the grade. But I do have some from when Beckett first started grading and they gave 10 to some that were obviously off centered.
In PSAs older cases cards tender to move around. But any of PSAs newer cases there shouldn’t be much movement. They fixed that issue for the most part.

Great vid with a lot of good points but I do disagree with some stuff,first off I’ve been a PSA member for 5 years now and the Platinum membership is on $199 And I only send in as bulk and cost is only $7 per card and that’s the cheapest of them all. I’ve also cracked open a lot from all 3 companies and BGS is definitely the weakest case and easiest to crack open. I prefer PSA but I do love the subgrades and the black sgc cases. If sgc was $3-5 per card I would definitely use the for pc and Psa for resale I don’t have any knowledge of sgc except cracking the cases open.
Do you mean the stands that hold up the graded cards? If so I like the plastic ones I have in the background. If you're looking for a nice shelf display, Pennzoni makes some nice baseball card displays.
I have a good chunk of my cards graded by the big three: SGC, Beckett and PSA. I'm primarily a vintage sports cards collector. I've taken my vintage Beckett (BVG, NOT that BCCG crap! But BVG) cards into a couple different cardshops and I've had the clerk tell me that BVG isn't as respected as Beckett (the Beckett for the newer post 1980 cards). I then have to explain to these clerks that the 1960s and 70's BVG graded cards I'm showing him never had the opportunity to get graded by the "new" Beckett b/c they're older than 1981. It's beyond belief that I've had three clerks at 3 different shops over the last five years make this mistake: essentially thinking that old pre 1981 cards can get graded by "new" Beckett when they can only get graded by BVG! It drives me bonkers!
PLUS PLUS Post post script...YOu didnt mention World Class Grading...they seem to still be around, and did all of the 10 solid gold star wars slabbed cards you see on Ebay. Tell us your htoughts about them. This vid got me excited :P
I hate to say that a PSA 10 is nothing compared to a BGS 10(Let alone a black pristine 10). for example in hockey, a McDavid YG PSA 10 goes from around $600 and a BGS 10(non black) goes for 2k plus... now a Black 10 can score over 15k for the same card. So please dont say that PSA has the best resale value when its clearly not. But, when it comes to retro card grading i would prefer PSA since they dont grade as tough as BGS. BGS does sub-grades which make the biggest difference between PSA and BGS which goes along way with collectors
Put a PSA 10 up against a BGS (regular) 10 and the BGS just smashes a PSA10 to bits in terms of resale and think about a Black 10 sells for?? So just think about doing some research instead of saying PSA sells better than Beckett, which it clear doesn't. However, I do like PSA a bit more for the retro/older cards since BGS doesnt do the best job on older cards.
Very good video, but nobody addresses what it's like to submit to these from outside the U.S. Unfortunately, it sounds like all 3 originated in the states, so it probably isn't worth grading for anybody outside of it

Well, if eBay BGS sold for more, then you would swing the other way. BGS is the most reliable grading company in the USA. I am a Canadian, and realize this. Subgrades equals accountability. Look at PSA! They copied BGS with the half-grades just to keep up...
I’ve many times seen a Beckett 9.5 sell for just as much as a PSA 10. And the Beckett 10 grade has been out for years. But Beckett is overpriced with their grading service. And as you stated, navigating their website is freakin horrible. Nonetheless, these are the big 3 that tend to have their strengths at a particular generation.
Im PSA still. Only went for the silver membership as it went up $50 bucks for the other. I submit through a group. Way cheaper($9.00 apiece)but yeah the wait time is incredible.
I've seen many PSA graded that in no way was correct. I know those cards was NOT as high as they said. 60/40 centering is NOT a 10 or even a 9. Saw some Beckett that I knew was a 10, but they said wasn't. It always seemed to me that Beckett was just so much pickier on grading, which is what I want if paying to get something graded. Beckett has been involved in cards for many many years, whereas PSA started out with coins. Beckett just seems to really go over the cards more. The less costly services from them even seem to be more consistent than PSA. Which says a lot to me.
I can’t agree man sorry. Psa graded the biggest scam an 8. I sent a 1/1 Lebron to psa got a 10 and opened the slab never touched the card sent it to bgs and got a 9.5
Great video. I just kinda got back into cards. I used PSA and then GAI when they came around because of price, and they were started by PSA former employees. I have a question about cards graded by GAI in their earlier days. Do they hold their value or is it something I should consider sending into PSA for a cross grade? I like aspects of all the companies, but I agree PSA has the most pluses. I wish they did the individual grades of corners, edges, surface and centering like Beckett. I liked that they went to at least the half grades, because I have cards graded prior to this and two cards with the same grade are obviously not the same condition. GAI, unfortunately, doesn't hold it's value anymore. They were good for a hot second, and then their grading standard started to go downhill. I'd get them regraded by PSA if you are looking to get them graded again.
BGS 10 goes for more than PSA 10 for key cards. A LOT MORE. PSA 10 goes for more for set registry cards, the cards that 99% of the hobby doesn't care about but PSA set registry builders are looking for. BGS is best for modern cards. For cards of the wax pack era all the way to the 50s, PSA is better because they are more lenient in their grade. For modern cards, like your 2011 Topps Update Mike Trout RC, BGS is the way to go. Most cards being graded are going to Beckett BGS because most cards being graded are new/modern cards. For example, your PSA 10 Barry Larkin 87 Donruss, one sold for $34.99 on eBay, couple days ago. Same card, BGS 10 (non-black) sold for $174.99. So it's not even close.
ummmmm, WHAT? PSA is the best in the hobby? and the resale value of PSA is also the best? you don't have to do very much research to see that a BGS 10 is worth FAR more than any PSA 10, and that's just going with a basic BGS 10. A BGS black label 10 in on a whole different level altogether. The only reason people will choose to send their cards with PSA is because they stand a far better shot of getting a 10 score then with BGS, so they opt to go that route instead. But to claim anything other than PSA was first is, and I'll be kind here.........misleading!
I respectively disagree. Take the best player/modern card in the hobby, the 2009 Bowman Chrome Mike Trout. Here are two recent sales of 2009 Bowman Chrome Refractor Trouts. I think it's the fact that people dont understand a bgs 9.5 is a psa 10 it's a psychological trick 10 sounds better than 9.5 it's all about perception.
I enjoyed learning from you in this video. I have a bunch of autographed football cards, entertainment signed trading cards (TV shows), bunch of 8x10 signed photos from musicians, tv actors, and I'm recently got back into signed baseballs. I like how Beckett slabs 8x10s so I'm thinking about going that route but I don't know if I should used them for everything or go to psa or what. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks
I think it's really about personal preference when it comes to grading autos. PSA cards tend to sell better, but Beckett has great slabs and they've been grading autos for longer. You can't go wrong with either of those companies. Beckett may be a little cheaper to grade. All depends on how many you're grading, the service turnaround, etc.
LOVE your video. so helpful for someone like me who's new to grading. So I recently took my old collection out of storage. I collected baseball/basketball cards from 1981-1991. I'm getting a love for the hobby again and want graded cards. I guess my question is, is it better for me to pay to send off my own cards that I think are worthy OR should I just buy the cards I want already graded on eBAY? Trying to figure out what's the least expensive options.
I would check sold listings on ebay for the cards you're interested. I'm assuming you're looking for PSA 9s-10s. Many cards from that era are actually pretty cheap in those grades. If the cards you're looking for that are already graded aren't crazy expensive I'd go that route. Grading PSA cards can come to about $12 (when you factor in shipping) and there's no guarantee you'll get a PSA 9 or 10. What cards are you interested in? Some cards from the era are easier to grade than others.

Greg Belz, In my opinion, the only cards worth getting in a PSA 8 from the 80s and 90s is the 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson and the 1993 SP Jeter since those are tough cards to find high grade and should maintain or increase in value in a PSA 8. I have a 1980 Topps Ricky in a PSA 8.5 which is another more affordable option if you're not looking to splurge on a PSA 9. You should be able to get most of those cards in PSA 9s and 10s for pretty cheap.

The 10s on PSa certainly do look great, but for perfectionists, for a lot of collectible cards, that 9.5 beckett would be worth more as it would be rarer and more stingently graded. opinion is divided, and Beckett does still need to use better long lasting glue for their inner tags, but their holders are thicker, stronger and just look better. BUt then PSa is so well known, and itssuper easy to get a 8 or better. lol Good times. Good vid though. ^~^

Pretty confident I can estimate my own grade well. Only worry is whether I could spot forgery. I often notice inconsistent grading too. 7s that look cleaner than 8's etc. Wonder if damage after the grade is possible.
@@sewaseem No, they all come in cardholders. Otherwise, how would someone know that card really is that grade? The card could get nicked or bent if it wasn't in a slab and that would negate the grade of the card. At 24:45 you'll see that Beckett grades cards with a soft sleeve if you'd prefer that route.

I must say I find it disturbing the cost is higher for more expensive items ? WTF ? A grade fee should be the same for anything. This is why we get things graded , to find out their true value.

I agree about the Beckett website not being user friendly, I wish they would fix that as well.. But overall, I 100% prefer Beckett over PSA for my grading needs.. Keep in mind I collect cards from the late 70's and up, so I don't have anything from the 50's, 60's, etc.. And I agree, that when you see cards that are that old and have been graded, they are almost always graded by PSA and that is mostly due to them being around since 1991.. Beckett does have far superior cases than PSA as you did mention in the video.. PSA cases are cheap in both look and feel.. And the fact that they do not even sleeve their cards inside of the cases, drives me absolutely bonkers!! Even though it is ever so tiny, being able to see that card move around inside of the case should be illegal! Lol.. Also the subgrades make a huge difference.. No questions, you know exactly why the card received the grade that it did.. I would also tend to disagree about resale value.. Yes a PSA 10 will have more value than a Beckett 9.5 that received subgrades of 9, 9.5, 9.5, 9.5.. But, any Beckett that is a true Gem Mint or better, receiving quad 9.5's or higher, that I have ever seen, has always been in far better shape than any PSA 10 I have seen, and I have seen thousands of them.. I have seen way more instances where a PSA 10 would be lucky to receive a Beckett 9, let alone a 9.5, then I have the other way around.. So PSA is not as stringent as Beckett is, and this is a fact.. When I was in the hobby until about 20 years ago, BGS had the reputation of being the most stringent graders, and a lot of people preferred BGS because of that to PSA. PSA had the reputation of handing out 9’s and 10’s like candy, where a 9.5 or especially a 10 from BGS was truly something special.
its still like that though lol 9s are fairly uncommon, but sitll in the thousads, and 10s in PSa still come in frequently. I seen hundreds of cards. BUt BEckitt is so rare to have things above 8.5 grade, its nuts. There should honestly be even mroe stringest grades of .25 or .75 for precise card grading. Oh well lol

PSA doesn't have a pristine. A 10 is gem mint. Beckett's gem mint is 9.5. To each their own.

Watch out for PSA lots of the 10s are just people resubmitting their 9s cracking the case and resubmitting till they get an easier grader. Beckett all grades are final and if you get a 9 or 9,5 you can bet the house you won't get any higher

Stick to resubmitting 9s to PSA because they quite literally give out anything with 60/40 centering a 10 regardless of corners, edges, etc

Ture...plus the interesting thing the vid didnt mention, is he constantly goes on about PSa 10s being worth more than even a BGS 9 or 9.5...thats not true as the more accurate grading of Beckett technically makes their 9s the same as a PSA 10. And then onward, a Beckitt 9.5 that was put together well in the slab, would be like a 10.5 psa. And of course the rarest Becket 10 would be like a PSA 11...its that rare . :P
And they often over grade their cards it’s wrong.

As someone who loves uniformity in my collection, I only buy PSA. I range from prewar to current cards and PSA is the only company that covers all. Great website and registry like you said. Very informative, good job
The overall uniformity of PSA across all eras of card collecting is definitely a big plus.
The best thing to do is buy cards already graded by PSA so that you do not actually have to deal with them. My customer service experience with Beckett and SGC is superior compared PSA. Thanks for your good video.

i think SGC double digit number was the most accurate way to grade the cards. the double digit grading numbers was copied from the coin and paper money grading. the simpletons like it 1-10 with half marks. i really like the SGC case holders with the black background. PSA is the market leader. its hard to catch up when they established majority of the market share so early on in the grading game. wished all grading companies utilized the beckett subgrading system. it sucks when you get a graded card and you don't know what the graders were thinking and why the card got discounted numbers.
Very nice break down for grading companies. I went with PSA when I started grading cards, mainly because they're in Cali about 50 miles away. Thought I'd get the cards back quicker. Wrong. I do wish they would let you know why a card graded as it did.

I'm mostly a PSA guy. But got a MONSTER deal on a SGC98 Gem 10 74 Nolan Ryan. Probstein offered $4500 off and then let me pay via consignment.
PSA10 is pop 6. SGC98 Gem 10 is pop 1. Crossing to get a pop 7 makes no sense. Keeping the pop 1 SGC. Especially with the old label before the grading system switch.
A true Gem mint Beckett 9.5 with all 9.5 sub grades (which neither of yours has) sells for more than a PSA Gem mint 10. I've seen off centered PSA cards get Gem mimt 10 grades. Plus, if your PSA card grades an 8 or 9, you have no way of knowing why.

Nice video. Agree with many of your points. As much as I like the appearance of the SGC slab, the registry ends up calling me towards PSA much more often. I went with the new membership PSA offered this year where you get no free submissions. Just the access to specials and bulk pricing. Long term my expectation is eventually Beckett will buy out SGC.

You're wrong about Beckett bringing less money via resale. I've seen 9.5 beckett graded cards with all 9.5 sub grades go for much higher than the PSA 10 of the same card, over and over again on ebay. I have a collection of about 500 graded cards psa, beckett and sgc
Great break down. None are perfect but a necessary evil. PSAs major flawed moment was giving a grade to the most expensive card, honus Wagner. The auction house owner of that card admitted trimming it. PSA does not give numbered grades on trimmed cards.

Also, some inaccuracies, outdated info, or straight-up guesses, I'd like to clarify -
PSA is not the "best", per se, they are the most POPULAR, and therefore they move on the market much more swiftly, mainly due to their superior/larger Registry. This will be difficult to maintain, as SGC and BGS continue to grade mass orders, however, PSA still dominates, and will for a while longer; unless! the recent controversies accelerate a lack of confidence, however, I think PSA will survive recent allegations (even if they're true). PSA has some down points, 1. the case is the weakest, 2. the label although updated very well/consistently, it is & has always been with a very distracting bright red outline, which distracts from the card, plus, the grades given are in relatively tiny print - an upgrade in this area would be prudent. Speaking of grades, PSA is the most lenient, and they are notorious for either not identifying altered cards (or worse, simply not noticing them).
BGS/BVG is the best case (except that take up the most space), best labels, (which maybe 1 out of 100 the label moves out of it's pocket). You can re-submit, for FREE, and they'll re-adjust a falling label. Although the case is fantastic, it's susceptible to a careless owner, so your chances of buying a damaged case (on eBay) are equal to that of PSA or SGC. Beckett's website/registry needs a lot of work, but the good news is they're making strides in that area. Beckett's graders are DEFINITELY the best; they are meticulous, and altered cards never get past them, (in fact, they have a special label for said cards), as well, they grade the harshest (contrary to many PSA-loyal collector's opinions); if you have a BGS 10 Pristine, you have one of the best versions of that card, hands down. Also, their prices are comparable and often excellent, but you need to submit (preferably) 50+ cards at a time.
SGC is fast becoming the best. They have by far the (actual) best case, and their newest all-black label (update: that ugly green is now history, thank goodness), with an updated large-font-single grade number, makes SGC likely the best going forward. The black frame they put around cards is not cardboard, it's actually a very durable plastic. True, you may get a smaller-sized card moving around, however, like BGS, they'll fix it for FREE.
*If you're meticulous about grading accuracy, or you demand the highest scrutiny in this area & authentication, BGS/BVG is the obvious choice. If you care about the marketplace, and moving quickly (buying & selling), then PSA is still the king. However, I'm currently leaning towards SGC being the overall best, because of their improvements to the label, continued accuracy & great customer service, along with still the #1 case (easy to stack, same as PSA) in the business.
I think Beckett (BGS/BVG which is 1980 and older) is a close 2nd, and PSA, while still the most recognized, continues to fall behind, little-by-little.
I have always preferred Beckett grading, I think the reason it fell behind so quick on vintage, besides the size of the slabs, was that is was grading Vintage too hard so drove the vintage collectors away until they came up with BVG. PSA has always been shady even from the early days with the Honus Wagner T206 trimmed card that they knew had been altered to all the trimmed and altered cards that are being exposed now. I think it will survive still because too many people have so much invested in PSA. Their registry has been far superior to the other companies so people can show off their ranking on sets and try to move up the ladders it makes it more of a game or a epeen show which card collectors love. SGC has always been popular for vintage graders too but no one uses them for newer cards.

This was a great video - I do prefer Beckett BGS for all my grading needs for Vintage & Modern / Great Customer Service & Quality of the cases seem more well put together.
SGC thru1915......SGC/PSA thru 1941......PSA 1947 thru 1997......BGS 1998 to Present ( these are my preferred) , but, I don't invest in 1998 to present...I collect newer HOF'ers 1998 but only if all the (4) 9's on a mint card show up...a BGS Pristine is highly sought after but, I don't play that game....I'll spend up to $100 on a modern card...and that's it. Learned my lesson on that new stuff...it's nice to have at the present but, for an investment...no way. Cards are collected because many collectors would like to see their cards go up in value but, 90% will bite the dust.

Websites for both SGC and BGS are just pretty lousy.... just the wrong font size all over the place compared to PSA which rocks the house with it's website clarity and attractiveness....PSA kills it with their website ...just a country mile better...Im surprised SGC has survived with their stogy customers and antiquated prices achieved for their graded cards...I run when I see SGC graded cards ~THE OTHER WAY. lol. The two card co.s are really PSA and Beckett..... Crossing over from BGS to PSA is another headache as most cards just dont achieve the minimum equivalent grade.....IF you have a BGS card that has quad 9.5 grades for a 9.5 GEM mint grade ~ the likelihood is less than 50% IMO that you will get a PSA 10 crossover result .... you really need to have at least 1 10 sub grade from BGS with 3 other 9.5 grades to have a shot.... and then its still crap shoot.... and ultimately you have to know the issue you are dealing with as say a 2017 Topps heritage is easier to cross over than say 2018 Topps Heritage b/c of the way the cards are made....nothing beats hands on experience and/but that costs crossover money!!

PSA also suffers for cards being loose inside the case. I have 4 damaged yugioh cards because they were loose inside the case and the card got stuck on the edge of the case inside, damaging the edge of the card

I've always felt that the big three -- SGC, Beckett (NOT that BCCG garbage), and PSA -- are all essentially the same. Of note is that PSA is currently embroiled in a card trimming scandal that's been simmering under the radar for about a year.
How times have changed. BGS 9’s and 10’s sells for twice as much as PSA now
Been out of the dame for like 12-15 years. I remember when Becket was selling better then PSA. Not one wanted SGC. Oh how times have changed.
PSA-Bad turnaround time. Customer service is good. SGC-Fair turnaround time. Customer service is good. The holder is my favorite. I use them for older cards and historical cards. BGS-Bulky, and I don't like the holder design or look. In the end- if you are grading older cards (like I do presidential cards), then SGC is a nice look. If you are wanting to grade for an investment, and resale, then PSA is the goto in my opinion. Can anyone tell me why people are going to Beckett for rookie autos these days?
Beckett has the best graders, by far (compared to PSA). SGC is the overall best (with their new look). And, PSA still dominates the market, because of the largest well-functioning registry. If PSA outsells (say, on eBay) it's because collector's aren't searching for SGC or BGS/BVG at all.

Thanks for the good work you did here. I have about 50 BGS graded cards which include Mantle's, Aaron's, Ryan's etc... from 50's, 60's and 70's. Graded about 10 years ago. I am getting back into the hobby. 2 questions. Still recommend PSA for similar cards from same era
I have yet to grade? Any reason to break open the BGS graded cards and resubmit for PSA grading? Thanks again for the time you took to help us older collectors getting back into the hobby.

Great video! A lot of value in just one video. I am going with PSA now because of the Beckett top part coming down and probably damaging the card. I do like the top part of it. BCCG does ruin their reputation of Beckett. I always wondered why they had different labels.
Basically Sports Cards that are turn of the century to the 1960s whether or not autographed, go with SGC. IF its a super rarer 1970s -1990s sports card, SGC might still be the way to go, but PSA could be too. PSa would do well for virtually any other card though. And unless you are absolutely sure you have a perfect GEM mint card, beckitt can sit it out. Though they are technically more valuable as they grade more stringently, making their cards rarer and more valuable. BUt yah:

ONLY, and I mean ONLY if you have a card from the modern era (1990s onwards) that is really mint worthy, then go with Beckitt. A 9.5-10 BGS would be so rare to make up for it no matter what in the long run, plus that sturdier case. Screw the label taking a chance of coming off partly or completely as long as the card is super protected. lol
The only issue i have woth BGS is their turnabout time being nearly a year long. Sgc being way to obscure for the cards i grade. Leaving me with Either plan a 12 month turnabout or psa which at longest was 5,5 months
Yeah and the problem with those long turn arounds too is that people who submit prospect cards, sometimes by the time the card comes back those cards are worthless because the player tanked or an injury happened etc.

I probably trust PSA the most, but I am old timer so it could be because they been around longer. I like how Beckett breaks down the grade. But I do have some from when Beckett first started grading and they gave 10 to some that were obviously off centered.

Do cards move about inside these cases ? The PSA case looks like there's a lot of space for movement
In PSAs older cases cards tender to move around. But any of PSAs newer cases there shouldn’t be much movement. They fixed that issue for the most part.
Very informative video and great breakdown. I much prefer PSA for many of the reasons you mentioned. Registry, better resale value, and nice, sleek looking slabs.
Yeah you really can't beat the overall appeal of PSA.
Great vid with a lot of good points but I do disagree with some stuff,first off I’ve been a PSA member for 5 years now and the Platinum membership is on $199
And I only send in as bulk and cost is only $7 per card and that’s the cheapest of them all.
I’ve also cracked open a lot from all 3 companies and BGS is definitely the weakest case and easiest to crack open.
I prefer PSA but I do love the subgrades and the black sgc cases.
If sgc was $3-5 per card I would definitely use the for pc and Psa for resale

Do you mean the stands that hold up the graded cards? If so I like the plastic ones I have in the background. If you're looking for a nice shelf display, Pennzoni makes some nice baseball card displays.
I have a good chunk of my cards graded by the big three: SGC, Beckett and PSA. I'm primarily a vintage sports cards collector. I've taken my vintage Beckett (BVG, NOT that BCCG crap! But BVG) cards into a couple different cardshops and I've had the clerk tell me that BVG isn't as respected as Beckett (the Beckett for the newer post 1980 cards). I then have to explain to these clerks that the 1960s and 70's BVG graded cards I'm showing him never had the opportunity to get graded by the "new" Beckett b/c they're older than 1981. It's beyond belief that I've had three clerks at 3 different shops over the last five years make this mistake: essentially thinking that old pre 1981 cards can get graded by "new" Beckett when they can only get graded by BVG! It drives me bonkers!

I hate to say that a PSA 10 is nothing compared to a BGS 10(Let alone a black pristine 10). for example in hockey, a McDavid YG PSA 10 goes from around $600 and a BGS 10(non black) goes for 2k plus... now a Black 10 can score over 15k for the same card. So please dont say that PSA has the best resale value when its clearly not. But, when it comes to retro card grading i would prefer PSA since they dont grade as tough as BGS. BGS does sub-grades which make the biggest difference between PSA and BGS which goes along way with collectors

Put a PSA 10 up against a BGS (regular) 10 and the BGS just smashes a PSA10 to bits in terms of resale and think about a Black 10 sells for?? So just think about doing some research instead of saying PSA sells better than Beckett, which it clear doesn't. However, I do like PSA a bit more for the retro/older cards since BGS doesnt do the best job on older cards.
Very good video, but nobody addresses what it's like to submit to these from outside the U.S. Unfortunately, it sounds like all 3 originated in the states, so it probably isn't worth grading for anybody outside of it

Well, if eBay BGS sold for more, then you would swing the other way. BGS is the most reliable grading company in the USA. I am a Canadian, and realize this. Subgrades equals accountability. Look at PSA! They copied BGS with the half-grades just to keep up...

Becket breaks down their rating. Psa 10 is too common. They are great cards but too lenient on 10s. Becket 9.5 doesnt equal psa 10 tho.
I’ve many times seen a Beckett 9.5 sell for just as much as a PSA 10. And the Beckett 10 grade has been out for years. But Beckett is overpriced with their grading service. And as you stated, navigating their website is freakin horrible. Nonetheless, these are the big 3 that tend to have their strengths at a particular generation.
Im PSA still. Only went for the silver membership as it went up $50 bucks for the other. I submit through a group. Way cheaper($9.00 apiece)but yeah the wait time is incredible.

I've seen many PSA graded that in no way was correct. I know those cards was NOT as high as they said. 60/40 centering is NOT a 10 or even a 9. Saw some Beckett that I knew was a 10, but they said wasn't. It always seemed to me that Beckett was just so much pickier on grading, which is what I want if paying to get something graded. Beckett has been involved in cards for many many years, whereas PSA started out with coins. Beckett just seems to really go over the cards more. The less costly services from them even seem to be more consistent than PSA. Which says a lot to me.

I can’t agree man sorry. Psa graded the biggest scam an 8. I sent a 1/1 Lebron to psa got a 10 and opened the slab never touched the card sent it to bgs and got a 9.5
Great video. I just kinda got back into cards. I used PSA and then GAI when they came around because of price, and they were started by PSA former employees. I have a question about cards graded by GAI in their earlier days. Do they hold their value or is it something I should consider sending into PSA for a cross grade? I like aspects of all the companies, but I agree PSA has the most pluses. I wish they did the individual grades of corners, edges, surface and centering like Beckett. I liked that they went to at least the half grades, because I have cards graded prior to this and two cards with the same grade are obviously not the same condition. GAI, unfortunately, doesn't hold it's value anymore. They were good for a hot second, and then their grading standard started to go downhill. I'd get them regraded by PSA if you are looking to get them graded again.
BGS 10 goes for more than PSA 10 for key cards. A LOT MORE. PSA 10 goes for more for set registry cards, the cards that 99% of the hobby doesn't care about but PSA set registry builders are looking for. BGS is best for modern cards. For cards of the wax pack era all the way to the 50s, PSA is better because they are more lenient in their grade. For modern cards, like your 2011 Topps Update Mike Trout RC, BGS is the way to go. Most cards being graded are going to Beckett BGS because most cards being graded are new/modern cards. For example, your PSA 10 Barry Larkin 87 Donruss, one sold for $34.99 on eBay, couple days ago. Same card, BGS 10 (non-black) sold for $174.99. So it's not even close.
The spa 10 outsells the Beckett 9.5 cuase a 10 looks better. Like saying $9.99 instead of $10

ummmmm, WHAT? PSA is the best in the hobby? and the resale value of PSA is also the best? you don't have to do very much research to see that a BGS 10 is worth FAR more than any PSA 10, and that's just going with a basic BGS 10. A BGS black label 10 in on a whole different level altogether. The only reason people will choose to send their cards with PSA is because they stand a far better shot of getting a 10 score then with BGS, so they opt to go that route instead. But to claim anything other than PSA was first is, and I'll be kind here.........misleading!

I think it's the fact that people dont understand a bgs 9.5 is a psa 10 it's a psychological trick 10 sounds better than 9.5 it's all about perception.

I have a bunch of autographed football cards, entertainment signed trading cards (TV shows), bunch of 8x10 signed photos from musicians, tv actors, and I'm recently got back into signed baseballs. I like how Beckett slabs 8x10s so I'm thinking about going that route but I don't know if I should used them for everything or go to psa or what. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks
I think it's really about personal preference when it comes to grading autos. PSA cards tend to sell better, but Beckett has great slabs and they've been grading autos for longer. You can't go wrong with either of those companies. Beckett may be a little cheaper to grade. All depends on how many you're grading, the service turnaround, etc.
Beckett is comprehensive. If you have many different sizes, you'll be very happy you went that route; their stuff is very professional looking.

LOVE your video. so helpful for someone like me who's new to grading. So I recently took my old collection out of storage. I collected baseball/basketball cards from 1981-1991. I'm getting a love for the hobby again and want graded cards. I guess my question is, is it better for me to pay to send off my own cards that I think are worthy OR should I just buy the cards I want already graded on eBAY? Trying to figure out what's the least expensive options.
I would check sold listings on ebay for the cards you're interested. I'm assuming you're looking for PSA 9s-10s. Many cards from that era are actually pretty cheap in those grades. If the cards you're looking for that are already graded aren't crazy expensive I'd go that route. Grading PSA cards can come to about $12 (when you factor in shipping) and there's no guarantee you'll get a PSA 9 or 10. What cards are you interested in? Some cards from the era are easier to grade than others.

Greg Belz, In my opinion, the only cards worth getting in a PSA 8 from the 80s and 90s is the 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson and the 1993 SP Jeter since those are tough cards to find high grade and should maintain or increase in value in a PSA 8. I have a 1980 Topps Ricky in a PSA 8.5 which is another more affordable option if you're not looking to splurge on a PSA 9. You should be able to get most of those cards in PSA 9s and 10s for pretty cheap.

The 10s on PSa certainly do look great, but for perfectionists, for a lot of collectible cards, that 9.5 beckett would be worth more as it would be rarer and more stingently graded. opinion is divided, and Beckett does still need to use better long lasting glue for their inner tags, but their holders are thicker, stronger and just look better. BUt then PSa is so well known, and itssuper easy to get a 8 or better. lol Good times. Good vid though. ^~^

interesting. Thanx for the info. I always assumed Beckett was the best and most valuable. Beginning to feel like clean ungraded cards is the way to go. Pretty confident I can estimate my own grade well. Only worry is whether I could spot forgery. I often notice inconsistent grading too. 7s that look cleaner than 8's etc. Wonder if damage after the grade is possible.

No, they only come graded with the slabs/cases

@@sewaseem No, they all come in cardholders. Otherwise, how would someone know that card really is that grade? The card could get nicked or bent if it wasn't in a slab and that would negate the grade of the card. At 24:45 you'll see that Beckett grades cards with a soft sleeve if you'd prefer that route.
A Beckett 9.5 grade is what a psa would make a 10. Beckett is better by far

PSA definitely. Beckett maybe if you have some autos, but even PSA tends to outsell Beckett autograph rookies like playoff contenders.

Beckett is far superior for graded cards. (Plus, now they have in-house auto authenticators.)

Personally, I'd go with PSA. PSA has greater resale value if you want to sell it down the road. But at the end of the day it's what you like.
