  • In this silent cine film we join the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society (M&GNJRS) "Lincolnshire Poacher" railtour from London St. Pancras to New Holland Pier Station on 8 August 1976 for an excursion on the coal-fired Paddle Steamer "Lincoln Castle" to Grimsby Docks. The return rail trip to London is from Cleethorpes via Lincoln St Marks, Newark and Nottingham where the cine film ends.
New Holland Pier station closed in June 1981 when the ferry service to Hull was withdrawn following the opening of the Humber Bridge. Lincoln Castle became a pub/restaurant at Alexander Dock, Grimsby. The ship was broken up there in 2010. Lincoln St. Marks station was closed in 1985 as part of the rationalisation of rail routes in Lincoln. The site of the station is now a shopping centre.

How lucky we are today to be able to get broadcast quality video from an inexpensive mobile phone carried in the pocket. There was so much change in Britain back then to record yet for amateur photographers on a budget the only recording media, 8mm cine film resulted in what appears to be poor results compared to today. Everyone on the train seems to be enjoying themselves though. Could they afford a beer on the train after probably having to save for the ticket? Thanks for posting.

Fantastic film, thanks for posting. Looking at the poster on Cleethorpes seafront at 4:41 on the film, it says Friday 30th July, so it is either 1971 or 1976 (probably 1976?)

Does anyone know if this train picked up at Worksop as the station is shown in the film? I did travel on a rail excursion with my parents to New Holland for a trip out on the Humber with the Lincoln Castle and wonder if this is the one. I certainly recall Lincoln St Marks, though it could have been a DMU. No idea about how we returned as I could only have been 8 years old.
