Update for anyone wondering. 2000 2500 suburban (which means 4L80e) turned out one or two of the bolts on my torque converter broke and the holes on my flywheel were “ovaled” worn out and stretched. they’re doing the rear main seal and two transmission seals while they’re at it
I have the same exact noise, when the engine was off I reached in there and was able to move the flywheel and torque converter by hand and i noticed they moved about a half an inch in rotation back and forth from the motor. That told me the flywheel to crank shaft bolts where loose. Not torque converter bolts.

I just purchased a 2009 Chevy traverse, there is a rattling on the underside of the car that is there very quietly on idle, but when accelerating and decelerating it gets louder and more evident, there when I start too. Do you think this could be the issue? It sounds identical to your video
@@Whitey3755 the car runs and shifts perfectly, we were concerned it was an engine knock because of how loud it gets but seeing some of these videos it makes me think that it is this torque converter problem. When I or my dad stop accelerating you can still hear it, we didn’t think it was there when it was idling at first but after letting the car run we noticed that it is in fact there just not as loud. My dad said when he was standing in front of my car with the hood open it sounded like it was towards the back of the engine. Did you hear this while driving, and if so when it followed up to speed the sound would be very inconsistent to the rpm, where as a rod knock would be rhythmic, this would rattle out of rhythm at speed? Likewise in park / nuetral
I started hearing it when I would warm it up in the mornings, park, neutral, drive, didn't matter. But the cadence didn't change with the RPMs like rod knock would. It only changed when I put it in drive and started accelerating. It kinda slowed when in reverse, but just slightly.
Hello sir, hope you can see my comment, as the video is 5 years old . I recently purchased my second Avalanche, and did'nt notice the noise at first .. I tried to inspect it, asked 2 mechanics about it, but no one could find the source . But mine is more like a clicking sound, and it acts ONLY in Drive or Rear gears . Would you have any suggestion ? It does not seem coming from the engine! Thanks a lot
Check the starter a good way is to find hill with a good decline and if you notice it stops it could be a bad starter not disengaging or you can use a jack and lift the back side
Ok cause I just started hearing the same noise coming from there and when I drive it hesitates to go and while driving it slows down on itself. I thought it may have something to do with that

Hey man mines making the exact same Noise... so we took off the cover but dont see any damage at all on flex plate. Did u see damage from there or only when u pulled it off?
Only when I took it out. The cracking is right around the hub where the bolts are. If you can get one of those little snake camera deals and stick it in the inspection cover you should be able to see it.
Whitey375 thanks man! It almost sounded like it was coming from closer to the engine bit its hard to pin point. The noise sounds exactly like your video.
@@luisrosales5011 Yes, I thought it was the oil pickup tube o-ring at first. It can get loose and bang off the bottom of the oil pan and create a noise similar, but not as consistent.
The sound im hearing is just like that. I thought it was my lifters but they right. My engine only has 10k miles on it. It's a crate motor. So I know the internals good. I just rebuilt the top half. Well changed all the seals and paint my block. Soon as I get my car from the exhaust shop I hear that noise. It's so disappointing but hopefully it's the fly wheel. Easy fix.
@@Mackaveborn well, from the research I did before and after, it should have been either that or the o-ring on the oil pickup tube, but that allegedly has more of a hollow sound. Could be lifter/valvetrain noise?

Brian Perry oh, copy, I must have misread your first post. It's got to be something loose, unless your flywheel is actually making contact with something?
@@claudegregory7098 What doesn't show up in the video very well is when I sprayed the white paint on it and then started it the paint acted as sort of a timing indicator. That's how I figured it out. The bolts were tight and I couldn't get any movement from the plate. The plate was actually cracked in a spiral pattern emanating from the center "hub" where the bolts go.
@@claudegregory7098 Not exactly, I could see the white paint spot appear through that inspection port every time it clicked. It was the first time I was able to see what part was making the click noise.

My Tahoe is making a knocking noise like that but only when it sits for a while but after it warms up it goes away, did the noise eventually go away for you?
Sounds like piston slap to me if the piston is worn down and the engine is heating up the position will go back to its normal size and the sound will go away
Pull the inspection cover and give the wheel a wiggle. If it doesn't move then it's cracked, if it does, get some long open end wrenches and do it from the port.
Omar Soto pull the inspection cover like I do in the video. Take a spray can of white or bright colored paint and spray a spot in the hole. Then start it and look in the hole, the paint spot will act like a timing mark and you should hear a tick every time it comes past the hole. Or, if you have one of m.harborfreight.com/digital-inspection-camera-61839.html?Fnot%20provided you can thread it up into the space and you'll be able to physically see the cracks around the hub
Omar Soto pretty much, you have to drop it down about a foot and back about a foot to allow clearance to work in there. Rickafix has a video on how to do it

What was the issue I’m having similar issues with my 01. 2500hd 6.0??
Have this same noise going on.. can spray it with wd40 and sound goes away for a day then back.. can bolts be lose?
Absolutely they can
I just purchased a 2009 Chevy traverse, there is a rattling on the underside of the car that is there very quietly on idle, but when accelerating and decelerating it gets louder and more evident, there when I start too. Do you think this could be the issue? It sounds identical to your video
That would be my first assumption, however it could be a heat shield as well. Unless it sounds like it's keeping time with the motor/transmission.
I’m hoping it is this issue because it is way easier of a fix than an engine knock😅😅 my question would be, did this sound get worse for you when you increased rpm? Like it rattles even worse as the speed increases
@@samantha2341 Yes the knock kept time with the transmission. The flex plate was notoriously bad in my year of Tahoe. Either way the transmission has to get pulled to check.

Durty South Kustomz that’s no starter ... trans. On flywheel. Or rod bearings either way it’s bad real bad,
Did you hear this while driving, and if so when it followed up to speed the sound would be very inconsistent to the rpm, where as a rod knock would be rhythmic, this would rattle out of rhythm at speed? Likewise in park / nuetral
I started hearing it when I would warm it up in the mornings, park, neutral, drive, didn't matter. But the cadence didn't change with the RPMs like rod knock would. It only changed when I put it in drive and started accelerating. It kinda slowed when in reverse, but just slightly.

Check your carrier bearing on the driveline. Either that or you may need a transmission rebuild because the synchros are going out

And what kind of spray did you use
Just a 3.99 can of white spray paint
What was the main issue? Were you loosing power while driving?
No power loss, just a continuous noise that's wouldn't go away
