A true all round mechanic, no profanities, no merch shoved down your throat, no sponsors, exagerated shouting or over acting.

No pretty rubber gloves, Darren doesn't care about getting his hands dirty.

    Hi Mustie,
My first bile was a DT360, a year or two before your Enduro.
The top ring was L shaped and right to the top of the piston gave them a really high compression ratio.
It was a really "tight" engine. when I saw the piston slap around I knew there was something amiss.
I think the second ring had a thin wave ring behind it, (could be wrong) but the ring gap looks too big.
The valve in the de-compressor could be a problem, but they were more known to stick closed than open, causing foot OUCH!
The engine strip down brought back memories.
The DT had a manual decompression lever, a thumb lever up on the handlebars, fail to use it at your own risk.
They were renown for kicking back and damn near breaking your foot.
The magneto removal tool was a "must have" as the kick back often ended up in a sheared woodruff key in the magneto.

On the 360 it had a stock bore of 80 mm stroke of 70 mm. In SAE is 3.149x 2.755. the .75 on the piston is in mm, as in .75 mm over bore. Or 80.75/3.179.
Using a caliper is not the best way to measure bore sizes. A set of telescoping tools is the way to go. These are aset of tools that kinda look like a T. The top of the T is spring loaded and the bottom locks it in place. You slide the tool into the cylinder and move it around to get the top of the T centered and level in the bore. Then lock the tool and tip it sideways so you can lift the tool out without disturbing the tool setting. You then measure across the T.
Measure fron to back and side to side at just below where the rings stop at TDC, just above where the rings stop at BDC and half way between. These measurements will help determine the bore size, out of round and taper. When boring an engine you bore out to a size bit over the largets measurement you got on the cylinder at the largest pointin the bore plus whatever extra need to clean up any deep scoring. You have to bore more to come up to the next overbore size. These over bores come in increments of .25 mm. So if you come out to .65 over to clean up the bore, you need to go to .75 to get a piston to fit.
In this case your already .75 over and from you measurements you may need to go .100 or .120 or more to get a piston.
Often if you have to go much over you need to replace the cylinder sleeve. Not hard to do just hard to do right.

Another great video, these 'L' shaped top rings were called 'Dykes' rings. The reason you see ring lands all the way around the piston sides is because the top ring land was turned down to allow for the ring wall😮 they were supposed to improve compression & were used in competition motors in the early day's & then migrated to road performance motors 😉👍👌

The Yamaha enduros are 12v. At least from 1972 forward. My first motorcycle was a 1972 CT-2. 175. It was 12v. Additionally the top ring is a Dykes style (L cross section) and the top of the piston is slightly smaller diameter this allows the compression to push the ring against the cylinder. That amount of piston slop is pretty bad. Bore to +.010 with new piston and rings

Mustie1, I hope you stay with this rig (nothwithstanding the MGTD). I've always loved this incarnation of Yamaha's trail/enduro bikes. A really beautiful look without all the boy-racer junk that screamed "Hey, look at me!" Buddy of mine in 1972 had the 175 in silver with the low fender. I rode it and fell in love with it. Would've been cool to ride to high school each morning. Perfect for a small town kid where city-limits speeds were no higher than 40mph. Trouble is, with my $2.50 per hour job at the local supermarket, I lacked funds. Moreover, we had a Hodaka dealer in town selling the zippy new 100cc Model B which was similar config to the Yamaha except it had the classic Hodaka chrome tank -- and no auto-lube. But my Dad knew the shop owner and could get me a deal; far less money than the Yamaha. And many of the gas stations had pumps that sold premix gas straight outa' the nozzle! How times have changed ...
