I am a professional decorator over 35 years experience and I love watching these videos as invariably I will learn something that as a solo worker (by choice) who although is very good at the trade I am still willing and capable of learning from other tradesmen. I take my hat off to a genuine skilled decorator who is not only a good tutor but seems a lovely guy. I wish you every success and happiness and do not stop sharing your passion.
You don't always start in the middle sometimes it doesn't matter because of the pattern. Some patterns never balance out. So check your pattern first. Thanks
Thank you, some good information there, don't believe I watched every minute of a wallpapering video and then lost Internet just as you were going to show the completed job, I'll catch it later but it looked good all through anyway 👍
One thing I like to do is to have an open dustbin for my offcuts, a lot easier than using a bin bag and no paste soaked offcuts getting on the dust sheets.
By the way, I’ve watched most of your earlier videos and wanted to see you dealing with external corners - luckily I recently stumbled upon this newer video. I like the way you mention minor details that are very useful to those less experienced in wallpapering. (And I’ve yet to find scissors sharp enough to shear the paper as you do!).
The first piece on front of chimney breast that turned round the side of breast and into the corner of the first wall, did it presumably overlap round that corner (and onto that narrow end strip) - as I did not see you trim any overlap??
Top job, not many decorators on you tube actually show external/ internal corners being done, they edit their videos very well. Youve not.so fair play mate. Great job as always.
@ 34:12 I swear, get a £3 papering spatula and run it along WITH your knife. I just learnt this and it's now how I do 90% of my cuts. Olfa snap-off > Stanley, too. Both revelations for a tenner.
To be honest papers have changed the fiber is a lot stronger. Did have some difficulties with the scissors... and these new paste the wall....wallpapers do seam to cut better using a very sharp blade.

This video was very helpful. A great job. Not sure if I am up for this task. I think I will re-think my wallpaper pattern so I don't have a melt down half way through my project....
Ah man that first measurement three you out across the whole wall and I feel for you. Personally I always start always start on the chimney breast face and work out and was taught to re plumb after every internal corner just like you showed. It might be worth mentioning to score with the back of scissor before running your pencil. Excellent job though mate good vid
Was taught to work away from natural light. The way the pattern was no problem where you start. Just goes to show several places you can start from and still make a perfect job with this pattern. Thanks
so you wrap around the external corner but overlap the internal? other videos do not wrap external, but they do have a +/- 10mm overlap on the "inside" wall, so the face of the chimney is complete paper but the sides are where any pattern overlap problems are less visible.
Great video! Well explained! All the proper tools and techniques. Hard to find professional wallpaper installers these days! Really enjoying watching your video. Have you heard of this unique Hyde/Richard gooseneck paint brush? Would be nice to see a video! Cheers! 👍
That's difficult to answer as both types have good points and bad points... but I always paste the paper anyway because it's the best way to keep paste off the front off the paper. And helps to make it easier to handle the paper. thanks
Why not wrap around the external by a few mm, then re hang and plumb the next length/off cut back. That eliminates those horrid crease and bubbles when you try and go around in one. On a larger return external you'd never have a plumb edge to work with wrapping around in one go. Btw... U tried wickes tub paste yet?
Brilliant video again mate I love your wallpapering ones could you send the link for the video that your brother made which he splices 2 papers around the corner please cheers, keep them coming 👍
Is it a straight, half drop pattern ,it's not a random pattern.Very easy to cut most of your lengths before you start.use a roller for speed much quicker.paste three to four lengths at a time before you start hanging.
i apologize for off topic...but just have to tell fellow paper-hangers...I once hung a paper that had a quadruple drop-match! every 4th piece was the same...bout lost mymind till i figured it out . Also, for what it's worth, I always did a "layout" before I started a room...best to avoid those "awkward" little 1/2 " strips. And yes, of course! I pasted ahead..can't make any money if u don't. Peace
Great video as usual. One question.... an exterior corner which carries on a long wall rather than a chimney breast... how do you ensure both sides of the drop of paper are plumb after being wrapped round the corner if you get my jist? Thanks Marc.
Thank you. Depends on the pattern and the type of corner. 90° corner you can go round a little 2to3mm then overlap next length and trim. Bullnose you see how it lies then make a decision deal with the bubbles on the corner or see if you can cut and splice the length all depends on pattern..
You don’t have link to your brothers two paper splice that you mention do you? Or can you describe the thumbnail? Had a look through but i cant find it.
Love all the videos you make! Just had a question about papering over painted lining paper. Is it necessary to apply sizing to the paper before hand? Or can I just go straight on top. The painted lining paper is well stuck and in good condition. Thanks for any advice.
I think you’re starting point is not the ideal place in regards of the chimney breast are notorious for not being straight, if you start at the centre of the breast it’s not only easier on the eye but any plum ness can be easily lost in the angle and any bagginess that may occur on chimney corner can smoothed out
Nice informative video thanks would you have a link to the video you mentioned that your brother did a Splice in the corner, would be interested to see how he does it thanks
If there is a large gap in the pattern repeat is there any merit in cutting the lengths from alternate rolls (of matching batch numbers) in order to make the most out of the rolls ?
Now if someone could show me a good technique to paper round an external bullnose corner that's also a slanted ceiling I would be all ears. Seems like it's an impossible job to do without cutting into the paper where the slant begins at the corner, but you lose any hope of making it a tidy job there doing that.

What makes wallpapering more difficult is some of the paper itself some of it is so thin it just tears just looking at it .
