Holy smokes!
This underwater trout strike footage is incredible!
There's a big gap in our knowledge of catching fish...
We know where they strike and what they strike... but not HOW they strike.
And this gap is likely costing us fish because we could be missing something in the strike, right?
So I attached a camera to my line before my lure and hit some grass flats to see if I could get some footage of trout striking my lure.
I caught several trout over 20" and the footage was fascinating!
Check out this video to see:
- What trout do immediately after they hit your lure
- How to avoid gut hooking trout
- Why trout don't bite off your lure tails
- Why you should set the hook right away
- And much more

That’s pretty dang awesome. Let’s see some flounder strike footage!
Thanks! Here's some awesome flounder strike footage: www.saltstrong.com/flounder-fishing-with-bucktail-jigs/
Great footage - this should be a great help !!! Be nice to see if all fish like snook and redfish eat similarly
Thanks Pablo! Yes, I'll be targeting redfish and snook next.
Cannot wait to see this with snook and red! You guys are the best
Thanks Elio!
Love seeing stuff that you'd normally never get to see! Can't wait to see what else you catch on that camera!
Thanks Ramsey!
Another observation is that they really seem to like attacking from below. Perhaps that means it’s best to retrieve the lure well above the bottom (when targeting trout), not bouncing along the bottom. Cool video!
Thanks for making time to leave the helpful comment Chad!
Love these style videos
Awesome footage. This is what it takes to revolutionize fishing tackle and tactics!
Thanks Chris!
Great video. Really look forward to seeing more videos.
Thanks!!
Amazing footage, Luke!
Glad you enjoyed it!
So cool. Great video. This is very helpful.
Glad we could help!
That’s crazy! I’ve never seen that before, they almost act like flounder except they turn left instead of just swimming with the drift in a straight line. Lovin my new slam shadys!
Thanks Noah!
Love these photos....where I live and fish speckled trout always hit the head of the live shrimp or minnow I typically use (fished under an old fashioned 8”-10” cork with a 1-1/4” bullet sinker, mono leader) it’s why I always hook shrimp under his horn or a mud minnow through the lips. Fish around Savannah where the tides change 7 or 8 ft on avg. redfish will hit the bait more from behind it seems to me.
Fascinating video. Very cool to see how similar each of the strikes were. They were so consistent in flipping the tail of the lure up. I’m trying to visualize what the camera looks like that you can attach to a fishing line. Can you show it in the next video?
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent live recording and imagery. Ty
Very cool, thank you
Great video right there! So true about hook set immediately. I hate when I've waited to long only for the trout to swallow down to his guts.
Glad we could help!
Great Footage. Thanks for the info !!!
Thanks Dan!
We want more...We want more! Awesome and educational
Thanks Kristian!
Great Footage guys 👍 I caught my first fish on my new minnowZ slamshady yesterday 🙂 thx again!!!
Thanks!
Nice, love any underwater footage.
Thanks!
That is so incredibly informative.
That is really neat. i am watching a lot of videos while I wait for my Kayak to get rigged up then I will be putting this knowledge to good use. Keep the videos and information coming. You all are awesome.
Thanks for the kind words Ron!
As always, great information. Keep it up!
Thanks Tony!
ENJOYED!👍🏾👍🏾
Thanks Steven!
So cool
So sick!!!
Nice video Luke! Had no idea how trout come out of nowhere like that - you should add some Jaws theme music, lol😆. That the slam shady lure (edit: yep @4:50). Looks like a straight slow retrieve?
Thanks so much! Yup!!
This footage is SICK!!! 🔥👌
Cool stuff. Great information. Thanks for putting this out there for us. Keep up the great work
Thanks Michael!
I also think the trout sometimes stun the bait then come back and eat it. I don't know if it's a school mentality though, where if one stuns or misses it the other will grab it. Great video
Very educational video. Great work to everyone at Salt Strong that made this possible
Thanks George!
Such an awesome video!! Thanks
Thanks Stacy!
Why dislike this video, person helping us
There's always at least 1 who will do that:)
That was great thanks for sharing 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video guys. Would like to see how other fish are hitting the bait. So by hitting the tail up, the bait gets eaten head first. All makes sense now. 👍🏻
Thanks SteveO!
Wow Luke ! , i have so many times imagined wat a trout , red , or even a flounder would appear like when actually in the act of predation ,,,, trout footage is so promising for future underwater footage endeavors : better resolution , better speed , etc ,,, of course it’s not easy to do this but i know SS can do revolutionary Things For Our Sport !! , Awesome Guys ( All of You at SS ) GB , be Safe ✨🐟
Thanks for the kind words!
Awesome footage
Thanks Raul!
Amazing footage Luke. Did you change the cadence at all or was it all straight retrieves?
Thanks Brad! I was doing a mostly straight retrieve so that the camera would be as steady as possible.
Outstanding!
Thanks Mac!
Luke, What camera were you using by the way?
That was awesome footage
Thanks Roger!
That was awesome thanks
Thanks Will!
Very cool!
Thanks!
Hello SS , one thing to consider on soft plastic lures is : there r many soft plastics that r ‘glued ‘ from main body to a seperate , differently molded tail that r Not Strong Enough to withstand multiple strikes even from pinfish ,,,, It’s a disservice to the consumer ( our angling citizens ) ,,, we all expect a decent , moderately durable soft plastic for our coin ,,, of course ‘ Da Slam Shady is Tuff , Resilient & Jammed w Juice & that’s Awesome For Sure ! ‘ But if y’all decide to go two tone Please make sure the lure tail won’t Popp Off ,,, Thnx Guys GB ✨
Absolutely!
Great footage! What camera did you use?
Thanks Peter! It's a custom camera I rigged up:)
@@Saltstrong well you did a great job with it 👍
Loved the donkey rig video. Have you rigged slam shady in tandem also?
I haven't yet used the slam shady lures with the donkey rig, but it'll surely work well too.

What are we hearing around 3:05? Sounds almost alien! Lol
Awesome video! Skinner will be proud, ;-)
Thanks!
Interesting about the knocking the baits tail
Sure is... I was shocked when I saw it keep happening on every strike while going through the footage.
I have the small size" 3or4",Looking for the 5" do you have them. Please Reply
Yes, here's the 5" Bomber paddletail: fishstrong.com/products/slam-shady-bomber?variant=32779088494677
IF in this video: YOU USED 'fluro" leader---definitely down plays its selling "aspect" as being 100% invisible underwater!!!
It was the most expensive fluoro I have... 20 lb Seaguar Premier.
Can you film this angle with a live white bait?
Yes, that's on my list of filming to knock out this summer.
Anyone ever tell you, you look like Pat Maroon from the Tampa Bay Lightning?
Seems Speckled trout are not at all line shy, going by this video.✔
This was actually high-end line (Seaguar Premier 100% Fluoro)... surprising how easy it is to see it.
That makes this video a double whammy !! What a surprise, I thought Luke only used mono as he said fluorocarbon does not seem to help. That shed of grass is award winning !🥇
Most of them moved to their left after striking
Cool!
Makes sense if you think about it. Fish eat their prey head first in order to be able to swallow it.
Very true
CHOMP!
Probably hit the tail to spin the fish around so it gets swallowed head first. Thanks for documenting this behavior.
Very true
@@Saltstrong the only reason the lure doesn't get flipped around is because it is being pulled by the fishing line.
There didn’t seem to be any short strikes, so a stinger hook wouldn’t help at all.
Correct. Stinger hooks are not needed for seatrout.
