Ellen Burstyn repeatedly said no and they kept raising their offer on pay. Then they offered her a ridiculous amount of money and also said they would fund some sort of fundraiser or charity she was passionate about and she finally said fine
And then they had Chris blinded and shoved away in a hospital for most of the movie. Absolute disgrace for a legacy character.
🤣🤣🤣 ,Reminds me of what happened to KANE HODDER (JASON VORHEES) , he walks away for an unknown reason , and said he'd Never Do It Again .... some time later they had to pay him a huge huge amount to come BACK.
Much respect for Burstyn for being in this movie even though she didn’t want to, at least it was for a good cause!
It's so weird that someone can think they're going to make a good movie when they know that a lot of the people in the movie had to be practically dragged into it.
Bonus this is the 3rd time they are killing the character in another interpretation 😅 @@FTZPLTC
“It feels like an Avengers movie” thank you for saying that, the scene where the catholic priest comes in and says he’s going to help, i felt like they wanted the audience to cheer and go crazy just like with the scene with Ironman on endgame. Even the way they shot the scene of him entering felt like the way a superhero makes an entrance
Goodness I relate to this SO much. Too many horror movies where the religious leaders/characters are introduced like superheroes or some MCU-type deal. It just doesn't feel 'human'. I just watched the movie in theaters today and it was thrilling for me, but I always look back after the rush and realize that something was missing.
I felt this way about a lot of demonic/religious horror movies as of late.
Thank you for using the Mark Kermode clip. He's basically a historian on The Exorcist, he delcared it as the greatest film he's ever seen and even helped produced the amazing Fear of God documentary in 1998 for that film's 25th anniversary so hearing him rip the new one to shreds was so satisfying
The Fear of God was included on the 1999 release of the exorcist in the uk.An expanded edition of this was shown a few months back on bbc iplayer, and it featured an introduction from Mark Kermode.
Kermode was also the guy interviewing Werner Herzog that time he got shot in the stomach. Guy's a legend.
Yeah Kermode is a GOAT horror critic
From the first moment I heard of this movie’s existence there were talks of it being horrible. I feel like it’s rare that we all can see such a huge stinker so far in advance
It's because it's a lame story. What are they going to do with it that wasn't put in before? Besides lame CGI
Yeah I'll see it eventually just wait till they remake jaws lol
It is just such a cynical cash grab.
I think the worst part, to me, is that I loved Act I. The missing daughters plot was well done and the father's acting overall was fantastic. After they return, however, it all goes down hill.
Fr the actors deserved better
Glad I didn’t go see it. Planning to see the creation tomorrow. Saw x need more support so we can get more movies
The Exorcist is a perfect case of catching lightning in a bottle and exactly why it’s my favorite horror movie. Part III was decent, but you can’t recapture that magic. We truly were spoiled. Crazy how well it holds up 50 years later. RIP William Friedkin
Also the thumbnail is on point
Part 3 was GREAT. it explored the same themes as the first from a different perspective. And the atmosphere was fantastic.
Third one is one of the best thrillers and is more than decent
@@unrecognizedtalent4834 As a movie itself, absolutely. As an exorcist film, it's a good sequel.
The Exorcist and The Exorcist 3 are all you need.
Try the show. The show is really good.
After seeing Chris Stuckmann review When Evil Lurks I got tickets for a showing I got out of a while ago and I can’t recommend that movie enough
Can’t wait!!!
That patriarchy line immediately took me out of the movie. Not only is it wrong but they just say it out right.
Halloween Ends was available to stream on Peacock the same day as the theatrical release, so that may explain at least some of the 80% drop off. At least some lol
Can Hollywood stop milking these type of franchises feels like there running out of ideas what to do as a new horror movie
Finally someone said it. I hated this movie. I'm a huge exorcist fan but I hated this movie.
I loved this movie, but I won't tell anyone they're wrong for not liking it. That's just dumb
Sorry but this movie was good!!! The vfx was awesome!!!!
The Exorcist never needed a sequel in the first place
Honestly, did anyone think it was going to be good?
"Double the possession. Half the fun." - The New York Times review of Exorcist: Believer
hahaha I like that one
That opening! This is why I love you Kylie. I can't get enough of your humor. And again I love these unscripted videos. But also I appreciate the review as well cause like you said, I'm not big on the Exorcist and not all for possession movies too much either. So thanks for the review
Was it great no was it disturbing yes yes it was
When will David Gordon Green realise that Scott Teems is ruining his movies. Also, every time I think of that “patriarchy is the reason why I wasn’t in the room” line I remember this script was written by three men who probably wrote it bc they thought it would slay on Twitter. The audience is not stupid. Two priests died to save her daughter and she’s mad she wasn’t in the room? That’s not something the character would say. The ending is proof of that. This movie is The Exorcist for dummies.
Exorcist doesn't lend itself to sequels and being a franchise. It was embarrassing watching Believer try so hard to be as creepy and unique as the original.
I love to eat my words when I’m skeptical of a movie but this thing stunk of cheap cash grab from the get-go. Too bad being a cheap cash grab is only one of the major issues. 🤮
Same! Hate being right sometimes 🤷🏽♀️
I haven't seen The Exorcist Believer and I have no interest in watching it but I'm still hyped and excited to watch your video 🙌🤘🔥
mark kermode was also a very close friend with blatty and friedkin
so that's why people were invested in his response okayyyy
Is David Gordon Green a good director? The world may never know~
David Gordon Green seems to be a bad director with only a few good scenes each movie. if you want really bad directing watch any movies by Lucifer Valentine or Bill Zebub, Daniel Farrands is not that good either, he makes "true crime movies" then adds in tons of ghost story
I remember in one of the trailers she says we’re gonna need all the religions for this exorcism and thinking tf are they the god damn avengers?
You're so right about people's reactions to movies these days. Sometimes it seems like it's impossible for people to just be normal about liking or disliking something without making everything super serious discourse. I guess I'm just skipping this movie tho, sounds really bad. I'll rewatch Exorcist III instead.
btw Mark Kermode usually has some of the best takes so it was awesome to hear him just full on rant.
I’ve been waiting on this review
Hi. First time viewer and new subscriber from the UK. Just a bit of context for you. Mark Kermode is THE expert on The Exorcist. He has written books and produced the definitive documentary Hand of God which is on the Blue Ray disk. His point was that they were not homages but lazy copies (or something). In the clip you showed he goes on to say that DGG completely missed the point/meaning of the first film.
Loved your video and will be going back to watch others that you've done.
Appreciate that! I knew he must be someone important given people were excited for his response
You have to compare it to the original because it copies so many aspects from the original. And because it's a direct sequel to the original.
To say otherwise is literally delusional idk how these people don’t hear themselves lmfao
Halloween trilogy was shit... Goes without saying that this was going to be as bad, if not worse.
The only movie I've ever walked out on and the fact the character Chris McNeil blames the 'patriarchy' for the fact she couldn't be there for Reagans exorcism (... No she couldn't be there cos she's not an Exorcist and one of the priests died saving her daughter!!), is absolutely pathetic. Exorcist 2 had more in common with the original 😂😂😂... And even The 9th Configuration had even MORE in common on another level too!! 😂😂😂
The Exorcist isn't a franchise cash in name like Halloween, FT13th, ANOElm St. Scream, Etc etc etc
My god, even the prequels were better😂😂😂😂😂
There's only 2 exorcist movies, the original and part 3:Legion. Legion was the original sequel.
Some films should never be touched.
Idk. I liked the movie 🤷♂️
Did it scare me? No.
Was it messy? Absolutely.
Was it still fun to see a new Exorcist movie in theaters made by a perfectly competent director who makes horror movies feel like gritty little dramas with over the top depictions of iconic horror villains? Hell yeah and that’s exactly what I like.
One of the things I like about you is that I often disagree with you. The first video of yours I watched was your review of M3GAN, and I had just seen it and really enjoyed it. You dogged it hard, and I realized that I didn't disagree with any of the reasons you didn't like it... I just liked it anyway. Having said that, I agree with you 100% on this. I was shocked sitting in the theater enjoying the first act, and thinking "why is this getting so much hate?". And then from the first scene with Ellen Burstyn on, it goes downhill SO fast. I'm one of the least critical people I know when it comes to movies, especially horror movies. Some of my favorite horror movies are objectively poorly made films. Hell, I thought Halloween Kills was stupid, but I loved it anyway. But yeah... this was bad. Not "so bad it's good!", either. Just bad.💩
I knew when I heard that they’re making a legacy trilogy for the Exorcist I knew it would be a flop because I never thought The Exorcist needed a sequel let alone a franchise. The only reasoning behind it was the success of Halloween (2018). I thought Believer was mediocre at best but not all necessary. Gave it a 2.5/5
I think only Exorcist III is the only sequel worth watching to the Exorcist.
I think I'm an outlier haha I must be the only person in the world who actually liked this film 🤣 probably I'm super weird. I admit the first part of the movie was so much better and the exorcism in itself wasn't great. But all in all I found it interesting and entertaining. Personally, SPOILER AHEAD
didn't see the death of one of the girls coming. I knew there was always the risk, but for some reason I wasn't expecting they would actually do it.
I wasn’t either to be fair
Tbh I liked it but after watching your review I may like it less now. 😂
I read a rumor so idk if it’s true that they may try to replace DGG for the next ones. At least he gave us Halloween 2018 and Kills, two movies that I adore.
Ohhh sheesh I wonder hahahah he hasn’t brought them any good press since 2018
The reviews that came out today for The Exorcist Believer is a gift. RLM & Haunted Hippie
lmao agreed, love RLM and HH!
Ellen only agreed to come back because Blumhouse agreed to fund a scholarship program she sponsors.
Also if you think about it a lot of legacy characters in other movies really have no purpose. Sidney feels irrelevant in Scream 5, Gale in 6, poor Sally in the newest TCM, Andy and Kyle in Chucky tv show, and now Chis McNeil in Exorcist. All thrown in for marketing and no sense of real purpose
I agree with all those expect for Andy and Kyle in Chucky. Especially Kyle. Don keeps finding new, weird things to do with them while still focusing on the new characters. Plus you could call Tiffany a legacy character that’s still greatly involved with the plot. Or if you wanted to stretch it even Nica is a legacy character at this point given she’s been in the series for over 20 years now.
I wasn't going to see it in theaters and wait for streaming... then I heard the "patriarchy" line, and I decided never to watch it. I mean, not because that's not a subject, but the fact the Chris never had a problem with priests back in the original, having them over to play piano at her parties and letting them save her daughters life while sacrificing their own lives (did the patriarchy kill Merrin and Karras?)... I thought that was an idiotic piece of dialogue.
This was the first time I ever walked out of the theatre. I wanted to love this 😢 it hurts a lil ngl.
My dear cult leader, thank you for speaking the truth of how much this movie sucks. I may watch this stinker once it's on streaming just to see how much of a hot mess it is. Can't believe there are still two more movies to come. 😢
This movie was disappointing, I've seen music videos more terrifying than this
I will say I did enjoy it, but I was in a 4DX theatre so maybe I was distracted by the ride. It kept me engaged as a casual watcher despite the plot holes but hearing the critiques I can see why it frustrates people.
The Exorcist and the Exorcist 3 are the only ones worth a look. And I love that you showed the Mark Kermode bit...he savages terrible movies with a glee, that makes his reviews more fun than those actual movies!
And yet Jeffrey Dahmer was such a fan of the Exorcist 2. Odd fact. He forced one of his victims they got away to watch it before he tried to kill him. I remember Exorcist 2 as being creepy in all the wrong ways and being very exploitative of Linda Blair as a teenager which grossed me out. So I never saw 3 but maybe I should.
Kermode’s take on Under the Silver Lake still infuriates me, still love him though 😂
22:29 -- Not only was that line cringe AF and sucker-punched all the investment I had in the movie up to that point. That line also negates and spits on the sacrifices that Fathers Karris & Merrin made to save Regan's soul in the original film.
Well, shes right. The catholic church is a patriarchal institution. Doesnt stop it from being cringey, but this is the only time that hollywood could use such a line without actually being obtuse about it 😂
I expected nothing of this film and somehow was still disappointed.
If a demon possesses me it would just make fun of me for not being able to complete the Riddler side mission in Batman: Arkham Knight or my inability to solve a simple puzzle in a video game because those are my deepest secrets
How can you not compare a sequel to the original movie for which it's supposed to be a direct sequel to?
The third Blumhouse Exorcist will feature Corey! Just you watch!!! XD
According to stories, apparently a studio suggested that the Exorcist 3 should be about the girl Regan from the movie should have two children who, surprise, both get possessed. So EVEN that has a connection to the past. Not saying that is where the director got the idea, but it is not an original idea either.
It sounds like that idea was stolen from the Exorcist TV show where Pazuzu returns and possesses Regan’s daughter Casey.
"I don't give a flying fuck through a rolling doughnut what Al Pacino thinks!" - William Friedkin
This was a man who simply just didn't give a shit, and I mean that in the best way possible.
Exactly! We all saw this coming when we did your trailer livestream! Hard pass! I honestly think that David Gordon Green doesn’t have a vision with his films. I saw from the beginning all the moments in his Halloween movies that were references to the previous films and I thought the whole point of his movies were to be separate from them! Now it’s like he’s just ripping off classic directors straight up! Like he doesn’t have an identity as a filmmaker that’s his own. He seems like a nice guy but I don’t have much hope for him to make anything interesting.
Fr! I don’t understand how that dude made Pineapple Express cuz that movie is actually kinda unique
@@HauntedHippie Right? i attribute the influence of Judd apatow producing and Seth Rogen writing to what gave Pineapple Express it’s success imho
David Gordon Greene loves destroying classics
2:55 -- The original was lightning in a bottle. The 2nd one was hot garbage. The third one managed to capture a lightning bug in a bottle. But yeah, everything since has been a mess. Sometimes, you just need to leave perfection well enough alone.
Also, why is it that old-person makeup peaked in 1973, and has never been good since?
I agree about 3. It’s actually a pretty damn good movie and ties in past characters pretty good. And probably one of the best jump scares of all time.
@@Chicoandtheman Agreed, but I also like how well-connected the two movies are. For example, in the third movie, Father Karras's soul is lifted out of Hell, crucified on some oars. I feel that that's a very important detail that's often overlooked; but if you recall, Father Karras committed suicide in the first movie. Suicide is a mortal sin, no matter how well-intended. So, even though Father Dyer performed absolution, Father Karras would still be Hell-bound for this sin.
The suicide also fulfilled Pazuzu's plan in the first movie, where he told Father Karras that the possession wasn't about Regan, it was about bringing himself and Karras together -- and the suicide did just that, condemning Father Karras to Hell.
Regan was saved, but Pazuzu ultimately won, as damning Father Karras was his plan from the get go. In the 3rd movie, they circle back around to that, but this time, Pazuzu's plan is foiled via unintentionally giving Father Karras a second chance via resurrection and Kinderman shooting him. Granted, Kinderman is now damned, but he accepted that during that whole scene before shooting Karras.
@@WarhavenSC oh yeah makes sense! You brought a lot of points that I didn’t think about. I think if those points had been slightly more specified in the movie it would have made it that much better.
I guess the trailer didn't lie in making it look super generic. I don't hate David Gordon Green like some people do but I had a feeling he wasn't the right guy for the job. Probably going to wait and just stream this one.
🤔 - when they say in the trailer that it was gonna take - ALL religions - to stop the evil - i roll my eyes an had feeling it was gonna b blahh - u know
I’m just really sad how they handled Miss Burstyn coming back after FIFTY years for Chris to have her eyes stabbed out by a literal demon child. I’m a bit glad Linda and Ellen had their reunion at the end. I know it’s a planned trilogy so hopefully DGG is directing Deceiver and the last film of the trilogy.
The Exorcist remains one of the best horror films of all time, not necessarily the scariest, i just mean quality, acting, writing, camera etc..i was hoping Ellen Burstyn would pass on Exorcist - Believer but she did donate her salary to charity.
@@haintedhouse2990 oh no I agree The Exorcist is the one of the best movies ever! I’m just glad Burstyn donated her lot to charity.
@@dillon9016 yes i read that she turned it down but they kept increasing the offer so she said yes along with the donation to charity. i think of her role as Chris McNeil pretty iconic, i guess i dreaded seeing the legacy messed with.
If you haven't seen it, go watch The Exorcist III (I believe it's the theatrical release, which is the preferred version). The movie was directed by Willliam Peter Blatty and is based on the book Legion, which he wrote as a sequal to the Exorcist. The movie has an incredible cast, fantastic story, and is actually disturbing. The movie will wash away the Putrid Taste the Exorcist: Believer puts in your mouth!
Yes, K, thank you! I was totally (à la Lynda from "Halloween") waiting for your review
So sad they messed up this movie franchise; I'll see it anyway for October's sake but - ughh - ego me absolvo
BTW great intro, cult leader LOL. Are we worthy?
Surprised you’ve not heard of Mark Kermode he’s been reviewing movies for decades on TV,Radio & newspapers in the U.K.. he’s been around a lot longer than RUclips film reviewers & certainly knows what he’s talking about
Omen fits the legacy sequel format better. Damien Thorn would be old as a president at this point
it's gonna be out on VOD on October 24th if anyone wants to save their precious money on those expensive tickets...or finish this entertaining review instead and be smart
I love the Original one of my favorites films of all time love the story bout the Exorcism and really bout the priest struggle with his faith and yes you warn people bout this new film which is rightfully so cuz most reviews I seen people didn’t like this new film
I read that Ellen Burstyn agreed to do the film if Blumhouse started a scholarship fund for young actors:
"This time they offered me a whole bunch of money and I still said no. And then they surprised me and they came back and said, 'We doubled the offer.' I said, 'Okay, let me think about this.' I thought, 'That's a lot of money. Let me think about it.' The next thought that came to mind was, 'I feel like the devil is asking my price,' " Burstyn said. "The next thought that came to mind was, 'My price is a scholarship program for talented students at our master's degree program at Pace University. That's my price,' " Burstyn told THR. "So I then went back and upped their up and ended up getting what I want. And I've got a scholarship program for young actors."
I have no problem being spoiled with this film.. I probably wouldn't have seen this film regardless even if it was critically acclaimed, probably never will.. I'm not really a fan of DDG based on his films that I've seen, but I'm not going to pile on him since it seems like he's currently an easy target.. I do like Halloween 2018 though..
That’s amazing!! Didn’t hear about that
@@HauntedHippieyeah she's a genuinely incredible person who just happens to be one of the best actors of all time.. gotta love her!
She's amazing in requiem for a dream too.
@@cavaughngrace1488 absolutely! it's one of my all-time favorite performances!
@@EddieHenderson92 I agree.. but they desperately wanted her just to bring credibility and hype to the film.. it was a business decision casting her and unfortunately wasn't just for her talents..
It amazes me that people can't figure out that the movie is going to be shit when watching the trailer or going through its credit.
Exorcist was boring....saw x was awesome🤟..saw x climax wen dat bgm starts d scene was lit 🔥goosebumps
My evil princes what would you like me to do. For you
You are at your best in black❤
I have a black Cat, her name is Wicca. You two would get along.
We would!
I liked the Halloween trilogy
Mark Kermode is a horror movie-focused critic at the BBC who was also a very close friend of William Friedkin. So yeah he's going to have a pretty personal perspective on this.
I don't care who you are for anyone to pay $400 million dollars for the rights of The Exorcist is just absolutely absurd Morgan Creek must be laughing their asses off right now at Universal while they're rolling in all of that money I would be too if I was them😂
How can you do movie reviews and not know who mark kemode is😂😂😂😂😂😂
Big shocker that I don’t live in the same exact internet bubble that you do
I too have been calling Halloween 2018 a remake (and also a rebootquel haha). I just don't think David Gordon Greene has that much to actually say about these classic horror series. Instead, he fills his horror movies up with recycled ideas and nonstop homages to make it appear that he's saying something when infact it's just a distraction from how empty his movies actually are.
I think that became very apparent with the patriarchy line like how did bro leave that in the Final Cut of the film 😭
Mark Kermode is THE Exorcist fan and critic. His entire career is built on his love for the original. No one knows more about these movies than him.
I just The Exorcist: Believer last night. I had begun to hear bad things shortly after the theatrical release but was willing to watch it anyways in hopes maybe I would like it anyways as I actually liked Halloween Ends and thought maybe DGG could cook but oh God... OH GOD HE CAN NOT COOK. In a nutshell the movie is like this: we got 2 possessed girls, make it like the avengers of horror, and "OH MY GOD THAT'S JUST LIKE THAT (insert XYZ scene) FROM THE ORIGINAL MOVIE 😲"
Just start calling us Greg 🤣🤣
I love your quote about the patriarchy line attempting to give the movie "broad" appeal.
Had the same feeling about the little nods to “puberty” being the cause of the symptoms, since it’s a metaphor that’s often applied to possession movies regarding pre-teen girls.
It was trash movie wow.
No self respecting film maker would even consider doing a direct sequel to “The Exorcist”, since the original is one of the best movies of all time…let alone the best HORROR movie of all time. The amount of hubris exhibited by David Gordon Greene here is completely off the charts, IMHO…since he’s basically saying “I can deliver a better script than William Peter Blatty and realize it better than William Friedkin.” It’s literally a fool’s errand.
The actors/characters were phony. The girls too smiley and happy in the beginning. The original Exorcist injected a psychological reality the way the acting was like real people in real life vs. acting characters. Ellen was such lost potential. There was next to no creativity in the story and scenes. Although this demon was supposed to be the same demon, it was a different personality. They should have had the white girl do an upside down hand walk (or spider) down the church isle with legs walking/waving (body and blood) with a demon voice. Not a freaky, holy shit scene to be had. Over 5 decades and still waiting.
Your Marlon Brando is flawless… Flawless lol
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.
Huh?
I really loved that intro. Just from that I knew this video was going to be good and it definitely was. Also never been a big fan of the Exorcist (although I did watch the tv show which I actually thought was good, well at least season 1). And while I'm not religious, I do kind of find some possession movies and shows with demons and angels, only cause sometimes the way they showcase them and their powers is pretty cool. One I can think of is Lucifer in Penny Dreadful. Also I'm with you on wanting to go back to the simpler times of if you love a movie or show, than that's fine. Instead of how it is now (especially on Twitter) where if you love something, people will absolutely roast/harass/bully you and label you as something. It's one of the reasons why as much as I want to join in on discussions for certain shows, movies, music artists, video games, etc., I usually stay away from them just cause they always tend to turn toxic. And you really gotta look for the handful that are not like that and I just don't really have the time or energy to do so. Also I agree with you on walking into a movie expecting to hate it based on whatever knowledge you have before seeing it. Basically I'm not really for hate watching cause for one why put yourself through that much trouble to watch something you know you're not going to like. Seems pointless to me. But anyway, thanks for the usual chaotic unscripted review Kylie!
Hope I can be a space that can be trusted not to be annoying and toxic 🫶🏼
@@HauntedHippie You absolutely have been one of a few safe spaces for me Kylie! I'm usually pretty careful with which creators I follow since I've just been sort of let down by some of them over the recent years with certain dramas happening and also just the sudden change they made due to gaining an immense amount of followers. But you've been one of a handful that I follow where I always get enjoyment from your content. And even though I'm not a massive horror fan, you've definitely peaked my interest in it more through your videos. And your general vibe as a whole is something I love. So no Kylie you're not toxic or annoying cause if you were I probably wouldn't be subscribed to you
When i went to see this film on opening weekend, it wasn't crowded but THE LOBBY WAS OVERRUN BY SWIFTY'S 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wouldn't it make more sense to bring back Regan instead of the mother? I would've thought that an excercist expert would be the PERSON who got possessed herself. Imagine if they went in a similar direction that nightmare on elm street did with dream warriors, except maybe more grounded and sophisticated. If anything REGAN has more weight as a legacy character than the mother. She and Nancy Thompson have a bit in common if you think about it.
The movie would’ve been so much better if they made the movie a duo protagonist film. I liked the new protagonist but like. Katherine’s parents should’ve taken Chris’s screentime with how useless she is to the plot.
Companies really need to stop announcing sequels before the first movie drops. Something like Gunn making a big deal about a new DC Universe because DC got it's own Studio. But if asked, let the reporter know that you have ideas for another film but waiting to see how the first movie does. Lowers the expectations. 😂 13:16 Also yeah, there are people thag are more open to be racist and other -ists about the art they consume, but I'd rather reserving that for those that actually use dog whistles , perhaps. And I definitely Question if DGG is actually a good director .Homey is giving JJ Abrhams vibes. But also, it REALLY seems like writing is getting worse for bigger movies. 13:50 Ellen B was like the One Year Later card from Fan4stic.😅
Before I really get into the video, I just want to quickly recap my opinions on the Exorcist franchise, of which I've only seen recently. But to do that, I need to talk about how disappointing and underwhelming and just plain boring the original movie was.
See, the original movie, The Exorcist, came out in the good ol' year of 1973, when people had no taste or correct opinions about anything, and especially not about what the word 'scary' means. For all my life I had that The Exorcist was one on the scariest movies ever made, and I had nightmares from watching the original IT and Mirrors. Literally. The night I watched it I had a nightmare about Pennywise. And while I technically never had nightmares about Mirrors, I avoided mirrors in the bathroom whenever I could. I always ducked underneath them, I only took showers so the water wouldn't have time to reflect anything, and I always used my body to cover up the toilet seat entirely so no light could get through and no reflections could be made.
So going from fairly traumatic experiences as a kid, to now still retaining my fear of clowns (which I now fetishize with the greatest villain ever in Joker), and no longer being afraid of reflections because I'm not 7 years old anymore, I went into The Exorcist at the ripe ageof 20 and was... Not impressed. I don't know if people were simply tripping balls when the movie first came out, or if literally everyone who's ever seen the movie is intellectually deficient, but it was not scary. At all. About an hour into the movie I was so bored of absolutely nothing happening that I took out my phone and split my attention between it and the movie for the second half, making sure I knew what was happening, but that I didn't want to kill myself from how boring it was. And when the credits rolled, I realized something: The Exorcist is the single tamest horror movie of all time. I mean fucking Lights Out, a movie about keeping the lights on at all times, is scarier than a movie about demonic possession. And sure, I might not believe in demonic possession, but that doesn't mean it can't be well done in a movie. It's not like it's a new concept for me.
Then I watched the second film. And during maybe the first 15 minutes I noticed something that kept me engaged throughout: this is a fucking drama, dude. And I thoroughly enjoyed The Exorcist 2: The Heretic. It was more captivating than the first movie, more enjoyable than the first movie, and it explored the mythology of the world and the demons a bit more. Infinitely better already.
Now knowing the franchise was a drama series and not a horror series, I watched the Exorcist 3, and holy fuck was it even better. Not only was Brad Dourif in it, but changing it up to follow a police detective this time around made for a fresh perspective. And it also made the drama even better. And fucking Brad Dourif, dude.
Then I watched The Beginning and Dominion... They're basically the same movie. Apparently they're also technically the same movie. There were so many production issues that there was a studio film, which came out in 2004, and director film which came out in 2005. And despite having mostly different casts, there are still a few of the same characters and actors, and a LOT of the same sets and plot points. And despite being two versions of the same movie, they're both REALLY good. Seeing the backstory of Father Merrin, and specifically his time during the Holocaust/World War 2, was heavily intriguing and captivated me more than even Brad Dourif could. Of the films I probably prefer Dominion for exploring the themes and backstory more in depth, but I definitely love the twist in the first of the two movies. But regardless, by this point I saw a pattern of exponentially increasing quality as the franchise continued.
Then I learned there was a show. A two season, 20 episode show that was canceled by Fox in 2018. And I watched it... And Holy fuck, was it better than any of the movies. And holy fuck was that twist at the end of season 1 episode 5 good. I was not expecting that at all, and that was the entire point. And the first season was fantastic. Then I watched the second season and it was even better. The central focus was a foster family with literally the best dad ever, made ever better by John Cho. And by the end of the season I was so invested in the family that I cried twice in the final episode. Once out of sadness, and the other out of joy.
And then I was confused as to why the show was canceled because it was SOOOOO fucking good. And low and behold, it was low ratings (which for people who don't know, means viewership, not literally low ratings, as the show was heavily acclaimed by both critics and fans). And it was canceled before potentially the MOST interesting thing the Exorcist would've ever done, because season 3 not only would've seen the return of the Brad Dourif character from The Exorcist 3 (though I don't know if Brad himself would have returned), but it would have explored how people of different faiths deal with demons and their own versions of Exorcism, instead of continuously wanking off the Catholic church. And from how well the show explored its LGBTQ+ diversity, as well as the very real situation of false possession (though I believe all possessions are false possessions) through the characrer of Harper and her mentally ill mother, I expect the showrunners and writers and directors would have done an excellent job exploring other faiths.
There were storylines I didn't really like or care for, such as the conspiracy within the Catholic church (because no duh, they're all evil), but it still provided for some... Interesting television, at the very least. Because with it came an exploration of the motivation of the demons, and of their opinion of God. I liked whenever the demons pointed to and called out acts of cruelty and evil by God. I didn't much like that it was used as an excuse to do the same things, but I still liked exploring their perspective nonetheless.
But alas, there's no way Disney has the balls to revive the show as a Hulu original series, and now Universal is making its trilogy, and they probably wouldn't want to get in an Exorcist v Exorcist fight.
But now the most recent film, Exorcist: Believer. Let me start off by saying that I was attached to the main family with a snap of the fingers. Just like that. And the movie flew by. Some of the other movies felt long, but this didn't. And I thoroughly enjoyed this movie most of the way through. It was basically up until the actual exorcism (the last half hour), that I enjoyed the movie. But the exorcism itself was probably the least interesting or well executed of the exorcisms in the entire franchise. Granted, some of the show's exorcisms are pretty lame as they just stand there repeating, "The power of Christ compels you," over and over. The same could technically be said of most of the franchise for that matter. The actual exorcisms were often the least interesting parts. But this exorcism was... Just weird. For a wonderfully paced movie, this final sequence was paced horribly. And let's not even start on hoe stupid and dumb the entire thing was, and how stupid and dumb the music was. They tried to make every little moment feel big but none of them did. When the priest walked in, the music was all happy and heroic, like he just saved everyone. So I guess I'm glad he didn't and that he died.
I did love the very twisted proposition of choosing which girl lives and which dies, and that when the choice was made, it ended up killing the chosen girl and saving the other. That was dark, especially for a couple of demons. And especially dark for the Exorcist franchise. Some real stakes and tension, there. But that was the most interesting part about the Exorcism, because everything else was lame.
But overall, I still enjoyed the movie. I didn't care much for the inclusion of the legacy characters, especially after getting so invested in the show which used them to an infinitely better degree, but whatever. They didn't make the movie worse, or anything. I do think this movie actually made me jump, though, which the franchise never made me do before. Once with the fucking dogs barking at the very beginning of the movie. Which was a cheap jumpscare, so I don't count it. And the second time after Angela had returned home and had been messing with the lights, specifically when she turned the light off and then appeared out of nowhere when it came back on. It may have been a little tropey, but it's a trope that works.
My least favorite part of the film was that, unlike the other films or even the show, this movie's inclusion of Christianity felt preachy to me. Literally, in the sense that it felt like the movie was preaching at the audience. Regardless, despite my misgivings with the film, I still found more enjoyable than the first film, and actually scary in parts. Well, one part. But that's more than the rest of the franchise can say.
Overall, I quite enjoyed the franchise. More than I expected when I finished the first film. Maybe I'll think differently on it upon rewatch knowing it's a drama now and not intended to scare me at all, but my current ranking is as follows:
1. The Exorcist (TV Series)
2. Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist
3. The Exoricst 3
4. Exorcist: The Beginning (only lower than 3 because a superior version of this is listed above 3)
5. The Exorcist 2: The Heretic
6. Exorcist: Believer
7. The Exorcist
I don't think anyone should touch the Exorcist. It's a good story. A stand alone movie. David Gordon Green is a director. The Exorcist 3 was good too. Keep up the good work Kylie. From one hooror fan to another. I love your videos.
I adore your content, Mistress of the Dark.
I just saw this movie today expecting it to be GOOOOOD AWFUL because of the reviews and I must say, it is definitely flawed, but as someone who's only seen the first movie, I found it mildly entertaining.
Not having seen the film myself, I will guess it lacked a coherent plot…any innovative take on the subject…boring characters…trite dialogue…and many plot contrivances.
…
Like most films today.
I bought the original Exorcist at Target, I love older horror movies as well!
Watch the directors cut
I heard Ms McNeil didn't attend her daughter's exorcism because she wasn't part of the patriarchy. By then I knew it was just going to be the murder of another beloved franchise.
In fact I think the should make a horror movies about franchises being murdered. I heard this movie was like watching the original be stabbed 75 times.
I liked for the opening alone 😁😂🤣🎃👻.
That being said I skipped this due to said Messy Reception.
And yeah the whole “all the fucking same” doesn’t help. As someone who reads ghost stories on everything including alleged possessions, I know what to expect and they bore me.
So boring! Retire the subgenre lol
@@HauntedHippie Don’t even get me started on Paranormal Activity. I can’t stand found footage either because of that.
I love it when there’s 3 versions of Kylie in a video.
That’s it. That’s my comment 👍🏽
Felt the same way about the first part of the movie. I was actually liking it and then it fell apart mid way.
I've seen this stinker on Prime, and i still want a refund! I can't find anyone talking about how there is no resolve. The avengers made their mark, and a little girl went to hell after the "right" priest got murked? This movie is so bad that it's just a head scratcher.
Also, I can’t decide which meme is funnier, “Religious faiths assemble!” or “Pazuzu dies tonight!”
