I’m curious if the arc through the trilogy is going to end up being finding a way to get Katherine back. I can’t imagine what kind of through story they can tell otherwise.
I totally think that's the direction the trilogy is going to go, and I wouldn't be surprised if Linda Blair returns as Regan to somehow connect with Katherine's soul through astral projection or something ala Insidious. Crazier things have happened in a DGG movie!
Love your reviews. Honestly, I was hoping this movie was a spin off the Exorcist series, which I really enjoyed as a follow up to the movies(especially the first season which was directly following Regan). As someone who loves the horror genre and regularly views Exorcist and Exorcist 3, I thought the writers/director of this movie were just working too hard and could have easily followed the recipe already established in the previous movie(s). In the original movie, Father Karras and Father Merrin were both being spiritually drawn to Regan and Chris, sort of like this weird spiritual quest that was leading them to this spiritual battle with the demon Pazuzu possessing Regan, and the demon was also fully aware and preparing itself, waiting and even challenging God/Church. I thought it would have been far more interesting if Chris and ultimately in the end Regan, because of this connection they have to demons via their experience, were similarly being drawn to these girls and their families and they go to the church to ask for permission to perform an exorcism, because the church won't, or something along those lines. It would have also made a lot more sense and wouldn't have felt as forced.
Talk to me set the bar high. nothing compares now even previous favourites like hereditary. i’ll have to wait for the next Philippou brothers movie to be interested.
The first of 3 installments?!!! Please, no. I hope Ellen received a very hefty payday. I'd love you guys to review Exorcist 3 and hear your thoughts on that one. If they made this rooted in hoodoo/voodoo lore, it would have been more interesting. The seance scene you're describing is giving me that Crucible opening in the woods. I'll still watch this tho.... while it's on in the background as I'm folding laundry 😆 Thank you. You're the best and great review as usual.
@l05555 I find that worship & belief system fascinating. We've only received just a few films that dive into it: Angel Heart, The Serpent & The Rainbow, The Skeleton Key, even the og Child's Play. I want to see it done respectfully and get the arthouse treatment.

Yes, that was the first time I had heard of there being a book written about Regan's exorcism and was a plot point in season one as it was revealed that the Mother was actually Regan and her Mother was the former actress and author of the book.
I appreciate this review because its not low key reacting to the wokeness that seems to trigger a certain demographic. You do correctly call out the weaknesses in some of the writing. Parts of it do feel a bit forced or shoehorned. I do think in some ways it kinda calls out some of the conceits people have in the realm of spirituality and culture. When Chris McNeil shows up and tries to get on with an impromptu exorcism, she gets a crash course in the scientific method. 1. Fuck around 2. Find out. And that in my mind kinda speaks to the short comings of the whole "i do my own research" community of RUclips watchers and Reddit commenters. The dialogue has tons of weak moments. But that cleansing bit with the root worker actually gets near some real voodoo/hoodoo stuff. So, they tried there, bless their hearts. It does seem like Catholic and American Evangelical Christianity kinda get called out in some ways. While there is room for that commentary, i have wondered if it was not well served by the weak sauce writing. I feel like this team is relying on multiple installments to carry the story on. This script probably needed to be rewritten and tested with people who have passion for the topic, the franchise, and who are generally speaking better writers.
If David Gordon green is such a horror fan , he should make original horror movies like Jordan peele and leigh whannell instead of making random reboots/sequels to beloved horror classics
When British Film Critic and massive fan of the original Exorcist was asked what the best thing about the new Exorcist Believer film, he replied The End. 😂

@halfbakedmoviescritically yes, but financially it’s hard to say. Studios don’t care about reception. If this movie makes 100+ million it’s getting a sequel
I'm a huge fan of the original Exorcist & believe it would take a literal miracle for another film to come along & match it. That said, I'm still going to see this movie, however, I'm going in NOT treating it as an affiliate to the OG film.
@imaneightiesbaby I just saw Believer last night & the entire time I kept saying "Oh this is so close to being a good movie BUT the writing & execution is just not there." Such a wasted opportunity.
When he started that bath tub and that flint water came out bayyybeeeee I was like GTFA from that damn tub Then when the little girl attacked her dad I was like Chile…. Couldn’t have been me 😌 lmfao My parents wouldn’t give af if I was possessed or not , they would of beat the devil out of me lmaooo ESPECIALLY when she was playing with the lights and then rolled up on her own dad staring at him saying “what did you say?” Chile the way I would of been flying across the room looking at my parents like that 😂😂😂 I was like this black parent is unreal
What you said! All that heavy eyed looking at me- shiii- girl wouldn’t had a chance to get fully possessed. Paazzuza or Lashmata would have been slapped alllll the way back to hell
The still was giving me Pennywise but I get the Ricci as well.. Demon: "who TF else is coming to this exorcism?"..the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker...
Can modern movies please stop bringing back legacy characters just for key jangling cameos then tossing them aside. If they went to all this trouble to bring Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair back make the entire film about them. David Gordon Green literally did the same thing with his Halloween trilogy. He brought Jamie Lee Curtis as well as several other actors from the original back only to give them nothing to do and unceremoniously kill them off. DDG needs to stay his ass away from iconic horror IPs.
Totally agree that it cut a lot of corners, especially in comparison with the original. As soon as I saw it was only 98 minutes, I knew it couldn't touch the original's multiple layers and deliberate storytelling. Rather than a trilogy of short films, one solid 2-hour film would have been a much better choice. Also, what happens with Ellen Burstyn's character just felt overly cruel and gross. To bring back a beloved character and actor (not to mention 90 year old woman) and have that be her fate feels like a slap in the face. All that said...I enjoyed the movie well enough. Leslie was really good. I think I was over-hyped with how TERRIBLE it was going to be that in comparison, it was fine. A fine empty-calorie studio horror.
Hollywood has the urge to shit on classic great movies with these god awful sequels, they really don't get it The Exorcist was so great because it is very realistic it is like a documentary, toss in a cameo and a child doing something crazy which is not shocking anymore and some jump scare don't make a horror movie.
I thought it wasn’t too bad, I saw it on Tuesday at a prescreening. I liked the Dual exorcism and that they incorporated the Black witch doctor. Rootwork doesn’t get talked about enough. I like Leslie’s character too, I was a little sad Katherine didn’t make it. 😮💨

You really have no taste A LOT!
I'm a huge fan of the original Exorcist & believe it would take a literal miracle for another film to come along & match it. That said, I'm still going to see this movie, however, I'm going in NOT treating it as an affiliate to the OG film.
I saw Believer earlier today and I agree with you-I refuse to regard the 1973 original as cannon
@imaneightiesbaby I just saw Believer last night & the entire time I kept saying "Oh this is so close to being a good movie BUT the writing & execution is just not there." Such a wasted opportunity.
When he started that bath tub and that flint water came out bayyybeeeee
I was like GTFA from that damn tub
Then when the little girl attacked her dad
I was like Chile…. Couldn’t have been me 😌 lmfao
My parents wouldn’t give af if I was possessed or not , they would of beat the devil out of me lmaooo
ESPECIALLY when she was playing with the lights and then rolled up on her own dad staring at him saying “what did you say?” Chile the way I would of been flying across the room looking at my parents like that 😂😂😂 I was like this black parent is unreal
Thank you! Can I get an AMEN up in here 🙏?
I mean as soon as you see blumhouse you know it’s going to suck! Blumhouse movies are the modern day made for vhs movies of the 80s
That scene where Catherine is in a hallway taken by the demon that was so not needed. Finally saw this. So bizarre and not needed.
Oohh we now know the sequel will be about what happens after Leslie's character dumps the demonic water into the sewer.
LOL "So now Ellen Burstyn is blind and in a hospital..."
Can I ask, how do we know it's the same Demon? is it confirmed to be Pazuzu in the movie?
