last year my dad asked me if I would be interested in a jeep Cherokee, 1989, a guy he worked with had a friend selling one for a grand. this was the first video i watched as i looked up 1989 jeep cherokee. we went out, looked at it, figured well take it, fix it up, play with it until it blows up or Maybe flip it. well, I started to work on it, simple things that I could do. within the following weeks he was diagnosed with stage 4 Lung cancer. 6 months later, he lost his battle (october, 2015). the day after his service I took the Jeep to the woods and she did great. and I'm still working on our project. it's come a long way dad. I put a new motor in it, put lights on it, gave it a limited slip rear axle, a new transfer case, today I bought like-new, used tires. every time I would fix something I'd come in and tell you how it rides or behaves. now when I fix or buy something to put on our jeep I want to show you so bad. working on our jeep is one of the few ways I feel connected with you. everyone wonders why I have such an emotional attachment to this beater of a Cherokee I've rescued from the grave. I love it, and I see my dad in it. and nobody knows that
Are you kidding me? That burgundy interior is beautiful and nostalgic. The whole inside looks like an antique radio. Way more leather and chrome. Looks beautiful.
Nice 1989 Jeep. I had my drivers license test in August 1992 with a 1989 Jeep Cherokee with 4.0 L I-6 and manual transmission. No power windows, no power locks.
I just recently bought a 1987 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0. It's light beige (compared to the Jeep Wrangler Mojave). Bought it for $900, it has just above 200,000 miles. No dents or scratches and the interior is almost perfect. It's getting some work done to it, but I'm going to leave it stock and keep it as my daily driver. So far I love it, it's extremely comfortable, and I love the classic style to it. No cup holders (which I am fine with) with all power locks and windows. Wish the windows were manual (cranked) but I'm just glad I got the Jeep.
these older jeep Cherokee Laredo units can run well past 300,000 miles and still have a solid engine!! I am happy to say I've got a 1989 Laredo with the 4.0 6cylinder and 5 speed manual tranny. mine is right at 215,000 miles and a solid daily driver.
My Grand Cherokee ZJ is doing fantastic, too. 309,745 miles! I was going to replace the transmission with a manual initially, but the original owners whom I bought it from replaced the automatic transmission with a new one 20,000 miles before selling it to me!
Oh man. Seeing this video brought back memories of my 1988 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. It was my first car given to me by my pops when I was 16 and I loved that Jeep but it had to go when it started to give me problems. I noticed on the battery meter that the gauge was over on the negative side. Mine did that too and towards the end of its run with me, it would idle very weakly and stall. At one point I even had the alternator replaced and it kept doing it. Oh well. Like I said, this video brought back good memories. Mine wasn't 4x4 and it was a dark/navy blue with grey trim and grey interior. Good times in that Jeep.
I also had a jeep Laredo as my first car, though mine was the sport 2 door and a 5 speed 4 popper...the Damn thing still lives!!! Currently I drive a 1989 Laredo 4 door 5 speed manual with well over 215,000 and no serious knocks or rumblings.
ive had my 89 cherokee for about 18 years and its like an old faithful dog....always by my side no matter how hard i kick it. They can keep all these new crossover SUVs....this is a true suv!!!
I always wanted one of these as a teen. Got a bronco in high school instead which was also awesome but I secretly wanted a Cherokee. Never got one but today I have an 2004 WJ. Same great engine. Paid off and gorgeous. Sometimes I pretend its an XJ. :)
I used to drive a 1990 jeep cherokee limited in black! It was a pos, but deep in my heart i really loved it! This video brings back a lot of memories!! Best upload ever!!!! also, i didn't know that shoddy cupholder setup in the center console was actually an option jeep offered, and not just something something some random guy threw together. It gets in the way of the handbrake and the center console conpartment lid.
In my opinion, these were the toughest Jeep's ever built. The older 4.0 and 4.0 high output was the best motor. Had a 92 Cherokee and no matter how much you abused that thing she always ran perfectly
I love these old Jeeps. I have two '89 Comanches with the 2.5L, and while one will never be on the road again, the other runs and drives like a champ. Some day I hope to completely rebuild it and convert it to 4x4.
i have the exact same jeep one year newer. Same paint, interior, features all that. i just hit 219,000 miles this spring. i am a big fan of Jeeps. Looking forward to keeping mine and getting a new one. That is just awesome. I have the sticker for mine it sold for $24,576 in 1990.
Bought one back in 1989 right off the lot. Really enjoyed it although it had a high idle problem that the dealer could never fix properly, over several years had to continually bring it back in. Seemed it would never run properly for more than 4-6 months at a time. Problems with power windows, each costing about $400 to fix. 4 wheel drive went out around 50k miles. Don't know if it was a good decision, but out of warranty so got it fixed. Ended up giving it to my college age daughter who found a mechanic that was very familiar with these models. Got it running like a top. At graduation she traded with him for a very new model Toyota. So I guess in the end it turned out well. Although sometimes when I think about it, especially with all the youtube videos out there by people who know what they're doing to keep these running, wished somehow I could have kept it. Oh well.
I have an 87 Cherokee Laredo and the thing has had a huge problem with engine cooling for a while. After finally replacing my radiator reservoir tank with a new one, I drive about 20 miles or so aaaaaaaaand, oh, who would've guessed, blown head gasket. -_-
I also have an '89 XJ Laredo, and it is absolutely fantastic. The 4.0 Straight-Six has got plenty of power for what it is, and it cruises almost effortlessly at 2,200 RPM. The main difference between this one and mine is, A. mine's got 173K as opposed to 214K. B. The paint on this one is in relatively nice condition, whereas alot of mine has flaked off. And C. Mine has the optional Selec-Trac as opposed to the standard Command-Trac. But most who have had one will agree that they are great rigs.
Classic piston slap at 4:15. That's the thing with 80's and 90's Jeeps -- even if half the power train is worn out it still works properly and doesn't fail on you.
I have a 90 cherokee laredo and a 88 comanche laredo. One thing I noticed about this one in the video is it has the np231 transfer case. Most Laredo’s had the np242
Im about to purchase a 1987 beautiful jeep cherokee. ill be picking it up tomorrow.Ill post a walkaround start up and test run tommorow arount 19:00 CST. keep an eye out for it. im so excited.
aahhh, the 'ol rear liftgage. Used to love that on my '87. It had enough room in the rear where you could just sit there in chill while in the woods.....great vehicles. They had a lot of room, were decent off road from the factory, and were well-built.
so im just curious is there any bloopers to the videos you do? i love them i watch them all they are very interesting. specially older ones :) keep em coming
This jeep is so much better than all of the current jeeps. The interior on this one looks a lot better than chrysler just throwing pieces of cheap plastic together, like on the newer ones today.
I am humbled to see such a magnificent vehicle. I think I might start worshipping vintage jeep. 4.0 motor Imo is fantastic! I'm not interested in all these new computerized motors, damn them all to hell! I love you jeep You are my friend Forgive me of my sins May I run strong and true, like you do. My current vehicle is an '88 S10 Blazer 4x4 5-speed (I've had it for 4 years now), but I've always wanted a late 80s XJ. The problem is finding one that someone hasn't lifted to the sky on a budget and stuffed 35 inch tires under it. The other part of this equation is finding one that is a 5-speed. Every once in awhile I'll find one that is stock and a 5-speed but it's either: 2wd or the person who owns it took zero care of it. So for now, the search continues.
i have a 1992 jeep cherokee laredo 4.0 high out put only has 128000 miles runs great four wheel drive very strong all i replaced was the head lights and brakes.

Hey everyone, I am looking at this same model Jeep on a used car lot with 120k miles on it and its a 4x4 and the used car salesman wants 3850$ for it and we have a friend of the family that has this same Jeep and his has a quarter of a million miles on and it is still running fine. I'm just wondering what are some thing to look for when inspecting the Jeep on the lot, he says the 4 wheel drive works perfect and the A/C and all works, but it lacks the headlining but I don't mind that haha.

artardFTW I feel so bad for you May your father Rest in peace & keep up the good work. Because you have to do it for your father.

I have a 1990 cherokee xj and I love it. No matter how hard you run or abuse it'll always take you home!

There's just something about a Jeep. You'll fall in love with it!
So true. I have a 91 Cherokee 4.0 that I can't see myself getting rid of it. Love that car even though I never drive it.
That's right. Cant beat them. Have a 91 Cherokee Laredo with that radiant fire exterior and grey interior.
I have a 93 YJ with the 4.0. It’s got 65k miles on it and it’s going to the grave with me
This was my family's first SUV when I was younger. Now I'm remembering it so much better!
Nice 1989 Jeep. I had my drivers license test in August 1992 with a 1989 Jeep Cherokee with 4.0 L I-6 and manual transmission. No power windows, no power locks.

Wish the windows were manual (cranked) but I'm just glad I got the Jeep.
Forgot to mention that the previous owner put brand new wheels on it with amazing tread. They'll last for a long while.
I'd love to add this to my Jeep portfolio. I've had 5 Grand Cherokees and the Cherokee was the one that started it all. Timeless character
these older jeep Cherokee Laredo units can run well past 300,000 miles and still have a solid engine!! I am happy to say I've got a 1989 Laredo with the 4.0 6cylinder and 5 speed manual tranny. mine is right at 215,000 miles and a solid daily driver.

I miss my 1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic so much. I sold it with 255,000 miles running like a champ. They are great trucks!!
Awesome. I learned how to drive in one of these. My older brother had bought one and I loved the car when I was 16. Brings back memories.
This makes me nostalgic for the 94 Cherokee my parents had in Newfoundland at their Cottage. It was beige with red interior.
ive had my 89 cherokee for about 18 years and its like an old faithful dog....always by my side no matter how hard i kick it.
They can keep all these new crossover SUVs....this is a true suv!!!
I actually wouldn't mind driving this everyday.
The Laredo model is beautiful with the chrome and this color scheme
I always wanted one of these as a teen. Got a bronco in high school instead which was also awesome but I secretly wanted a Cherokee. Never got one but today I have an 2004 WJ. Same great engine. Paid off and gorgeous. Sometimes I pretend its an XJ. :)
I know someone that has a jeep like the one you show. But it's a 5 speed manual in it and it gets up and go big time when the foot hits the floor
I used to drive a 1990 jeep cherokee limited in black! It was a pos, but deep in my heart i really loved it! This video brings back a lot of memories!! Best upload ever!!!!

It's actually idling fine it's at 600 rpm which is good. They just didn't put a line between zero and 500 rpm.
In my opinion, these were the toughest Jeep's ever built. The older 4.0 and 4.0 high output was the best motor. Had a 92 Cherokee and no matter how much you abused that thing she always ran perfectly

"We'll cut on the headlights" ...as well as activate the soothing sound of the buzzer.
I have just bought a grand cherokee 89 like this and I’m very excited to drive it
I have an 87 Cherokee Laredo and the thing has had a huge problem with engine cooling for a while. After finally replacing my radiator reservoir tank with a new one, I drive about 20 miles or so aaaaaaaaand, oh, who would've guessed, blown head gasket. -_-
Thats a nice start up for an older Jeep! Starts right up.
Great video, it's great to see that your doing videos of older cars like this.
That jeep is in great shape for the year, wow
Gonna get a 1987 Jeep Cherokee Laredo as my first car :)
I got a 1992 had it for 4mos now
I have an 88 Cherokee Laredo 4.0 litre myself... Must say it turned my father and myself into life long Jeep fans.
I also have an '89 XJ Laredo, and it is absolutely fantastic. The 4.0 Straight-Six has got plenty of power for what it is, and it cruises almost effortlessly at 2,200 RPM. 4.0 Is the best engine Jeep/Mopar ever made.
Great video as always Kyle! Those older Cherokees are awesome!
Nice Jeep! That interior as the same as the '93 Country we had!
for that high mileage and year, she's really not in bad of shape!
I used to have a 87' Cherokee chief 4 door
Are these reliable? What about the parts, are they fairly cheap? Thanks
Jeeps are very reliable and can last thousands of miles, and yes parts are cheap.
I have a 90 cherokee laredo and a 88 comanche laredo. One thing I noticed about this one in the video is it has the np231 transfer case. Most Laredo’s had the np242
Oh yes. This is good car. We have one, we upgraded it for some offroading (lift, lockers, 33 wheels etc).
Thanks I needed a video like this for my school project !! 👌😭
Im about to purchase a 1987 beautiful jeep cherokee. ill be picking it up tomorrow.Ill post a walkaround start up and test run tommorow arount 19:00 CST. keep an eye out for it. im so excited.
Im a proud owner of a 1990 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2dr back when a Jeep was a Jeep
Back in 2007 or 2008 my dad had a old 4 door white jeep we took it on the freeway but it smoked and broke down we sold it I love the old jeeps.
aahhh, the 'ol rear liftgage. Used to love that on my '87. It had enough room in the rear where you could just sit there in chill while in the woods.....great vehicles. They had a lot of room, were decent off road from the factory, and were well-built.

I love that chrome grill. I want it for my 87' but it's expensive. You have very nice car ;)
So beautiful interior
This jeep is so much better than all of the current jeeps. The interior on this one looks a lot better than chrysler just throwing pieces of cheap plastic together, like on the newer ones today.
Gotta love older Jeeps
THANK YOU FOR POSTING!!! This is a nice jeep! i just bought a '94!
Other than the gas tank location these jeeps rock
Used to have an '88 Cherokee Pioneer 5 speed 4.0 . Great vehicle.
thats in pretty good shape for an 89 jeep with over 200,00. nice find kyle
Thats the same year as my first XJ. Awesome vehicle. Upgraded to a 99 :P

Who where did you get cup holders?
1st comment and first viewer yay thanks kyle cant wait till your thousandth video can you find if you can do a 1998 pontiac transport with 4 dr?
I am humbled to see such a magnificent vehicle. I think I might start worshipping vintage jeep. 4.0 motor Imo is fantastic! I'm not interested in all these new computerized motors, damn them all to hell!
I love you jeep
You are my friend
Forgive me of my sins
May I run strong and true, like you do.
May your exhaust fumes and swift movement enlighten my soul into everlasting bliss
Bless you jeep.

Michael G 1@
If only they made cars like this today.
10 more videos kyle and then we get to see the beast (:
This s my favorite year Jeep Cherokee.
My current vehicle is an '88 S10 Blazer 4x4 5-speed (I've had it for 4 years now), but I've always wanted a late 80s XJ. The problem is finding one that someone hasn't lifted to the sky on a budget and stuffed 35 inch tires under it. The other part of this equation is finding one that is a 5-speed. i have a 1992 jeep cherokee laredo 4.0 high out put only has 128000 miles runs great four wheel drive very strong all i replaced was the head lights and brakes.
Very nice Jeep. I like them.
I love that Jeep!
i love cherokees
I have a 1988 Cherokee with 201,000 miles. Best vehicle Ive ever owned. Interesting fact...these Cherokees (87-90) do not have a Check Engine Light. :)
Always wanted one of these
Nice Jeep!!! Almost 250k on my friends '95 Grand Cherokee.
@90Mrknowitall It is. Jeep was owned by AMC back then. They borrowed parts from lots of other auto makers. They used GM steering columns, ford power windows, and the Automatic Trans is from Toyota, which cam be found in the Automatic Toyota Supra.
Hey Kyle,
Will you be doing a vid on the Mercury Marauder?
Thanks.
Nice, i like it how looks this cherokee.
@celsovera91
they were at some point. Some the mid 80s jeeps had GM steering columns (same steering wheel as the Chev Caprice) and some of them used GM's 2.8L carb V6 (the ones in Blazer and S-10 pickups)
What is the color paint code on this jeep? Need help!!! My original driver side door was replaced with a junkyard one and does not match the rest of the body.
What year was the last to have the quarter vent window I like to have a car with those so I don't have to run the AC nice day
Looks like it's in fairly good shape on the inside.
Looks like the rear bumper needs replaced, though.
I know you're not trying to sell the vehicles, but it'd be pretty cool if you'd include the prices they're currently marked at.
was chrysler ever involved with gm? they use the same key and ignition
hey i'm thinking about buying one of those as a first car. Any issues at all?
@saabkyle04 what happens if you break something in the car? do you have to replace it or pay the owner or do you act like nothing happened?
"hey everybody whats goin on" legendary line.
Best truck Jeep ever made.
i love this generation of the grand cherokee if iwas going to get one it would be this one :)
I like the interior on this one.
What's the little box thing in between the 2 sunvisors on the ceiling?
The headlights look EXACTLY like the Nissan hardbody XE 4x4 king cab!
what is that clock to the right of the dash display? and the box up on top above the mirror in-between the two sunvisors?
@MrNalgahead123 No... He did a 2007 I said 2009+ but I probably missed it. If so whats the video called?
Are these okay on the highway with larger tires?
This Video is as cool as the jeep wangler video.
4:15-4:26
Beginning sounds of rod knock.... this thing doesn't have much left
Ive put 95k miles on my 94 Jeep XJ 4.0 since my knock started still runs and drives like a dream, mine "knock" is more Piston Slap than the actual rod
Meh, it's a Cherokee. You run em into the ground till they blow, and just simply put a new engine in since it's so cheap
Why do most sellers don't show how to use the 4 wheeler shifter? 🙄
