2023 VW GTI 40th Anniversary / Almost Peak GTI

  • High performance, practicality and affordability are hard to achieve simultaneously. While it's debatable to some, I believe the mark 8 GTI checks those boxes, and the 40th anniversary edition sweetens the deal. In fact, this with a 6 speed would earn my general recommendation over the new Civic SI, Subaru WRX, GR Corolla and more.
Thank you, Royal on the Eastside, for letting me test drive this GTI for the review!

I actually kind of forgot about these until this video. There's apparently one nearby me for $35k. I feel like it's the sweet spot because of the adaptive suspension, and the base already being surprisingly well equipped.

I just purchased a Pomelo Yellow 6 speed manual two days ago. It is absolutely incredible! Prior to seeing the one I bought, I’d only caught a glimpse of a Mk 8 in black passing through town. As many others, I wasn’t sure about the color. The moment we drove up to the dealer and saw it parked in front, I knew I would own it. It is the sweetest ride I’ve ever seen! Had I not purchased it (it had just arrived the day before), there were three other customers who would have bought it. I count myself fortunate! I am so thrilled to own this marvelous machine!

My SE came with all seasons which I replaced with Continental extreme contact sports and launch and handling drastically changed. My car is a 6mt. As far as fuel just for grins I put in shell 89 (I only use shell) after running 87 for 2 months. The car seemed to respond better and returned a 4mpg increase on highway driving. 11:14 Lots of us (owners) are also suffering from sensor errors popping up on the dash multiple times a second for a couple of minutes (i.e. Travel assist, Rear Traffic, ESC).
It’s happened to me for like 13+ times now.
They usually go away, but sometimes I just turn the car on and off and they stop coming up.
I haven’t visited the dealership but will plan to do so eventually , since I don’t use the car everyday, not in a hurry.

The MK7 to me has been the best all rounder (haven't driven the MK8 yet, I plan on it this Thursday) -- but I haven't even seen let alone driven the GR. I picked up my 40th anniversary GTi with the DSG transmission a couple weeks ago. No dealer mark-up either so I thought it was great value for money, at $38K CAD. They are not readily available though. The local dealer was allocated one car and it was offered first come, first serve to everyone on their GTI wait list. I guess I was the fastest on the draw. It has the wireless charge pad and wireless Apple/Android Car play. Also has the full KESSY system including proximity unlocking. And Navigation and Head-up Display. But it doesn't have the full Travel Assist package (adaptive cruise control/lane assist) like this model. Nor does it have volume/tuning knobs. Those functions are done through the infotainment system or touch-sliders under the screen or capacitive 'buttons' on the steering wheel. I live in Canada and purchased the car from a Canadian dealership. Not sure if the cars for the Canadian market are trimmed out a little differently than for the US market, maybe? Hmmm, according to VW the 40th Anniversary GTI is supposed to include the Autobahn's summer tires as standard, along with the adaptive suspension, light bar, 19" black wheels, wheel pinstriping, 40th Anniversary decals, and red interior trim pieces. (The summer tires, adaptive suspension, much better-looking wheels, and S-trim volume and tuning knobs being the prime 40th Anniversary motivators for me.) Otherwise, yes, if VW would ditch the piano black and garbage electronics this would be peak GTI, which would be great...if you could actually get one, and get it at msrp, or, better yet, at the usual pre-pandemic discount. Instead, when I tried to get one, I was told that that not only could I not even get on a list for one, so that I'd at least be assured of getting one, but there would definitely be a dealer markup, and it would be on a first come/first served basis. This turned me off to the prospect of getting one. Zero chance I'm paying above msrp for anything, much less something that depreciates as badly as VWs always do. Ended up buying a 2023 MX-5 GT soft top 6-spd manual instead, at a healthy discount. VW lost a sale there.
