High Martyn,
They all have a specific character and sound.
It was hard to make a choice and did play your video 3 times before I did make a choice.
One time I did close my eyes to hear them better.
I'm still struggling between 2 of them.
The Regal/Dobro M-45 and the 1931 National Triolian.
I've got a Republic Minolian.
Great video,man!
In kind regard,
T.
That Regal is very special and technically ‘low value’ compared to some. It’s a great guitar!
Beautiful guitars and playing….all of the Style O’s sound fantastic……and the Duolian sounded wonderful too !
Thanks for the comment! Style 0’s make great all-rounders!
That Triolian that you played 2nd had a perfectly imperfect sound to me.
It’s a great instrument that one. Clear but beefy. Think it was a touch out of tune from memory.
Wow, how great is that, being able to hear ten different resonator guitars in a row - thanks so much! I guess, taste is very subjective. Just considering the sound, I would definitely go for the National Tricones, with a preference fo the one from 1930.
You chose correctly!
Great collection! Thanks for the comparisons. How can you go wrong in choosing? They all sound great!
I think that’s the takeaway here. Anyone of these would do you well!
My Dad played Dobro in the late 1940s and I caught the bug early on. There is nothing better than that resonator sound! I’ll bet you have trouble picking a favorite from your collection. They all sounded GREAT to me.
My 1931 Duolian I sold was my favourite. I know of a 32 that I have my name down on that’ll come in soon.
The 1938 DOBRO M-27 seems to be good balanced, the low E string does not sound weak. I really liked her.
Great guitar!
My favorite :)
mie too :)
Impressive collection!
Thanks. Not a shade on many other I know but they’re all loved and usable.
I have an early Mule reso single cone that has the most amazing natural reverb. Get your hands on one you’ll be in love
They’re super cool. Love old original nationals personally. That’s my jam!
God bless y’all! Thanks for the demo! I gotta say I’m a wood resonator/spider cone guy, but I really dig that last tricone tone! It seems the most balanced out of them all. Thanks again! Keep given Glory to God makin’ those sounds!
-Ronnie
You’ll have liked the celestial god reaching tones of the Regal out of the bunch then I’m sure. Glory be to all these guitars. 🌟
I have a 1935 Trio;ian, and a 78's Dobro D622. I used these guitars on background music for The Incredible Dr. Poi tv show on National Geographic. I appreciate the video help in listening to the different model sounds, thank you!
Two cool guitars! Hopefully they produce all the ambiance needed!! 🎯
Well, that was interesting. I liked the Trojan and the last 2004 reso. I bought a Reso Rocket WB this summer so of course I like the tone and sustain of the Rocket WB. Thanks for the video, I really look forward to seeing them. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada.
Interesting. You picked the two bassiest ones. They’re all good TBH. Enjoy the 🚀
Hello Dude... loving all your you tube films! I love the sound of the Trojan but its the 1931 Triolian that is best for me... I have gigged my 1931 Triolian plectrum guitar for many years playing gypsy jazz and swing, and so it is the sound in my head when i think reso. I have just acquired a new Beltona Super Baritone ukulele to replace my national for gigging, It has an awesome dark punchy sound and has been great on stage. I played the new incarnation of Jamboree in London last Saturday and the Beltona really kicked!
Ah awesome stuff! I might have seen that instrument at Steve’s. He’s nearby.
Your the second comment and are the second person to mention the Trojan!
Interesting!!
Keep on swinging!
🎼🎯🎼
@@TheWashboardResonators Hee hee, thanks dude. My baritone is green, and I also gig with a red Songster tenor ukulele. For me Steve's ukes both sound great and feel great to play, they simply can't be beaten when performing.
Kudos! Nicely done. I’m in my mid-70s and as an 18 year old, playing lead guitar in a small town rock ‘n roll band, one afternoon I was handed an old “Dobro” guitar to try. I fell in love with it and periodically since that day have dreamt of buying one. Your video showed me not only the broad tonal differences between the various styles and old vs new models, but most importantly what I had called them all for 50+ years refers to a particular model rather than the more correct term “resonator guitar”. Guess it’s never too late to teach on old dog a thing or two? Thanks!
Dobro is one of two brands. National & Dobro. Same brothers did the two companies. Our resonator history video tells the tale. It’s like people referring to vacuums as ‘hoovers’ when they call resonators ‘dobro’s.’
Hello from Luxemburg and thank you for your cool and intresting videos! For me the Dobro sounds good and the 2014 Tricone. I play myself as beginner a Rekording King Resonator Guitar and I enjoy now more playing because of your tutorials ! Thanks!
Excellent! Thanks!!!
I just picked up a 1932 regal m45. So much fun to play!
Ooohhh!! Nice instrument!!
I have a 34 Style 0, a 2008 NRP Tricone and a 2022 NRP Mahogany M1 Cutaway Tricone. I love them all and each has a different sound (and tuning). I really liked the 31 Triolian, it really stood out for me. But it's going to have wait for a few years as I just bought a PRS McCarty 594 10-top electric and I'm broke now but happy learning some electric blues.
All killer guitars. It’s the joy of picking good stuff. They’ve all got a voice! The Triolian does indeed have something! 🎯
They all sounded great! But the tricones sounded fuller
They’re thinner than single cones but richer.
They all sound great, but I think my favourite is the 1930 Tricone
It’s my favourite. It developed a slight buzz just as I was filming. I fixed it after filming. Good choice! 😉
Wonderful range of reso sounds! They all sound better with fingerpicks than without in my opinion. The old tricone sounds best to my ears, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's partially because it's simply the coolest one of the bunch - I might pick a different one in a blind test. ;) Thanks for sharing your collection!
Close your eyes and listen again!! 😑
The old Tricone is dry and balanced. It does things others don’t! I don’t think it’s just the perceived value.
Finger picks on resonators make such a difference.
I truly believe that because they were designed for Hawaiian playing which uses fingerpicks then at the design stage all decisions about cone thickness, body type etc were based around fingerpick testing.
That’s how they were meant to be heard.
Obvs fingers sound great too but there’s volume and articulation that is missing without picks.
They all sounded good. The differences were subtle. I like the wood body guitars
🎯🎯🎯
Nice to hear the Regal 45 holding its own in some illustrious company Martyn!
Ha! Thanks Paul. Incredible guitar. Played it loads. Sounds great!
@@TheWashboardResonators groan… played it loads… that’s disappointing to hear 😉
All the Nationals sounds very good!
Correct!!
Really appreciate getting to hear all of this amazing collection of vintage resos! Loved them all (the 31triolian might have been my favorite and vagabond although very cool maybe my least). I settled on a mule tricone in steel and am very happy with my choice. Matt at mule is making some incredible guitars. Thanks again
Awesome all round!! Thanks!!
@TheWashboardResonators No worries! Hopefully you add mule into your videos as I'd love to hear the comparison to different nationals.
@@Mattymuruclips.net/video/4EiJao00QSI/видео.htmlsi=Nnf-l_LbH7PyOhQ_
To my ears a Mule tricone sounds warmer and rounder than a NRP tricone. NRP are usually louder, the Mule softer and more refined. I love my Mule. No other guitar I have played or heard sounds as good to my ears.
@@J.Dove3D love mine too! It is a rounder sound but also really growls when you dig in near the bridge.
Loved the tricones didn't matter if it was the 1930 or the modern one
They have something special!
Very nice . . . Thanks! 😬👍
You’re welcome!! ❤️
They were all great!
True! 🎯
Impressive collection and playing, and I liked them all. If I had to pick one, it has to be the 1930 National Tricone. If you ever get the opportunity to try Mule tricone, take it! They're hard to come by, but they sound fantastic! They're way out of my price range:)
Thanks!!
Played a Mule Tricone the day I bought the 1930 one. My pal Kaspar has one he got very cheap second hand.
They’re super cool and do their own thing tonally. Between a vintage and newer NRP. Warm and balanced.
I prefer the tones of the 2014 National NRP tricone for it's hi-fi sound. That being said, my second choice would be the Airline Vagabond for it's low-fi, trashy tones. Both the tricone and Vagabond guitars would be all you need for a gig.
🎼🎼🤘🏻🎼🎼
What a great video. I do think the old style 'O''s and the Duolian are my favourites, with maybe the Duolian the most 'useful' in a mix, IMHO. But it could also be the case that I'm biased or used to both sounds :)
I think if you wanted one resonator, a brass body single cone gets you some metallic ring and some warmth.
Sits nicely in a mix.
That Duolian is very very warm compared to many others.
Both beautiful!!
X
Every one of them sound great in your hands!
Awww… 🤩
That airline vegabond is wild looking, I like it in a weird sort of way.
Just sold it to pay for a cool old banjo but it had a thing for sure.
Loved it on the sofa for working stuff out.
Loved the first one the last one and the. National unstripped
All cool guitars!
I enjoyed them all, resonators are fun guitars, whichever you have!
True true!
I love the bass on the '39 Regal (personally), just because of the mellow hollowness of that wooden body.
Maybe once I can finally learn regular acoustic,
I might look into a resonator though! 😊❤
They’re wonderful instruments with a great personality.
regal rc-56 was my first guitar and it was a pain but it sounded amazing
Cool axe yo.
Style O for me. Thanks for doing the demo. Just bought a Paramount that is surprisingly good. I’m new to resonators but an experienced guitar player. Man I’m having fun playing resonator guitar. Please do a video on tip and tricks to using thumb pick and finger picks.
Cheers
There already is a video on thumb and finger picks!
I compare types and share techniques. It’s in the video list somewhere!
Thanks!!
The Style 0 is a good all round guitar!
Love me a Paramount, they’re always good!
🎼🎯🎼
Just found it. Thanks😎👍🏻🎶
Sound is a matter of taste.
Of course. 🎯🎯
I appreciate the video greatly. Thank you. But it is unfortunate to have so many great guitars and lack the mic(s) to record them at a higher quality. They all sounded very thin and flat, even though you are a talented player and I'm sure they are fantastic in the room. Due to this, I fear some guitars were made to sound disproportionately worse.
The point is that people get to compare different cone types, body types and brands.
You can hear the differences well enough.
Apart from the auto compression an iPhone mic is pretty decent and it’s a relatively big room with high ceilings and lovely wood floors so apart from the early reflections it’s fine!
I think they all sound great!!!
Correct!!
I like the mojo on that 1935 Trojan. That one sung to me the most.
It’s haunted that guitar.
@@TheWashboardResonators well it's got more soul than the others, so that makes sense! One of your favourites?
I mean, after our recent exchange on Instagram.. I have to say the 45!! They really do all have their own thing going on. Anyone who ever asks why do need more guitars, should really watch this!
I used to have a MM 28 - great guitar for the money, I regret letting it go!
Hello again Chris! It does come across great even on here after the RUclips compression. Warm and articulate with good sustain! The MM28 is a killer guitar. They do come up used around £350+ ish and represent great value for what is an incredible instrument! 🎯
Both the 35 nationals sound amazing but I like the stripped sound more personally
It’s a big sounding guitar. Massive bass regardless of strings.
What amazes me the most is the inexpensive ones sound as raw and cool as the high end ones if they are set up correctly. After all steel, brass, nickel plating is just that regardless of who makes it. They all have that raw bluesy tone. Of course if you buy a National or dobro or mule, it will increase in value over time perhaps and the inexpensive one wont but is it worth it? I dunno. I own both lol.
It’s a good guitar if it’s good to you for sure! 🎼🎯🎼
I like the 1964 vagabond best
Might be coming up for sale! 🎯🎯
Bit of special streamline there 👌
🎼🎯🎼
That 2014 style 1.5 Tricone sounded the fullest and richest to my ears. What is the slide you’re using here?
Diamond Bottleneck Ultimate. Best of the best. 🎼🎯🎼
I like the style O the best, nice and bluesy
It’s got the bluesy shit baby. I’ll bring ‘em for our next walk! Been full on. Speak soon. 🎯
The Tricones have a more refined sound which is to be expected. I'm more of a duolian guy...raw and raspy. Nice video.
Duolians, wood body Triolians and Tricones all the way!
I can't tell, they all sound good under your fingers, Martin. I've only owned my first resonator guitar for about 10 days, having played acoustic for 50+ years, I don't know how good an instrument those in the know would consider it, but I am loving playing it - I play fingerstyle with a thumbpick but no slide as yet, the bluesy/folky/ragtimey stuff is what I'm after. Perhaps you could give me an opinion, my reso is a parlour-size, wood-bodied guitar by Icarus, which I believe are sold in the US as Republic.
They’re great guitars generally with a cool sound. TBH I think you get 80% of the experience from any resonator. This video is designed to share the differences so perhaps somebody saves time trying loads. You just get the one that has the 20% difference you prefer.
Generally I like wood bodies and tricones.
Took years and tens of thousands of money spent to figure it.
Hopefully this video shared that knowledge for ‘free.’
The Airline, sounds amazing, best of them all in my opinion
Ha! It’s cool and individual. I’ve really enjoyed using it on the sofa / couch in an evening.
@@TheWashboardResonators I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of those Airline's, are they very rare? expensive? I did an internet search but nothing comes up, any good vintage sites you may know of in the UK?
As a conehead i liked them all they all had something to offer , it was interesting to hear the NRP , i think my favourites were the 1st one the old tricone , followed by the style o from 34 then the triolian and the Trojan , my Trojan sounds similar ..i also like your 2 NRP sound wise .
Thanks Al. The old Tricone is spectacular. I like how the old ones are basically a little lighter sounding but richer and in the midd and usually articulate in the top end. The new NRP’s are usually fuller in the low end. It’s like apples and oranges. Both distinctly different. Both great. 🍎 🍊
@@TheWashboardResonators that is a excellent way of putting it ....I agree with you My trojan and old duolian (a 37) are that my 2 NRP (a 14 fret style o and a older delphi ), are exactly as you describe ...I play MM Guitars when i cant decide which guitar to take ....lol
@@aljohnson3010 MM are superb.
@@TheWashboardResonators yes i have all the models except for the new fiddle edged dobro.....
Love them all, but in particular the 1935 National Trojan!!
Nice pick!! Many look down on them as they were the cheapest back in the day. I think they’re great when dialled in. Warm and very fundamental. 🎯
Want to thank you as well. I recently got a Michael Messer Blues 28 after finding you on a RUclips, and your recommendation of his guitars. Couldn’t be happier with it.
@@tegidrhys5661 That is awesome!! Great guitars and it’s wonderful to know what was essentially a lockdown project of making videos to keep our name out there has such positive outcomes.
That’s probably my favourite of Michael’s guitars too!!
Nice review and impressive collection, but... You just miss to present us a Mike Lewis’ Fine Resophonic model ! Slight oblivion ? Yes, he lives in France, but he’s an englishman, and, most of all, works so well
We love the work of Mike. His are regarded as the best. Just don’t own one.
@@TheWashboardResonators as a very happy owner of a FineResophonics Tricone (for 20 yrs), I can say this guitar is incredible: on a sonic point of view, no noticeable difference with a National, but Mike Lewis pays such attention to every detail that you have a high end boutique guitar, for the price of a standard pro one... Absolutely no buzz ever (as i use 12-52 strings !), perfect fretwork, intonation or action, ultra precise and smooth pegs... State of the art construction!
I love the tricones (even though I sold mine) the Duolian really does hold its own even among the more sophisticated and extensive company. I can tell why you didn't want to leave the Dobro behind too. 👍
Mannnn… it’s a nice ‘new’ Dobro. It’s the only one I ever played that has power like a biscuit bridge national. Didn’t pay too much too.
Your old Duolian is killer.
It’s got old dead nickel strings.
The rest are all phosphor bronze which is obviously more bright especially in the mids. Shows how good the Duolian is.
@@TheWashboardResonators knowing how much you like it makes me happy 👍
@@chrismartin1220 Like the 1930 Tricone it’s a ‘lifer.’
The reso national 2nd
🎯
the jitterbug swing!! :D
Yep!
I think my favourites were the 1939 Regal/Dobro and the 1930 National. Wasn’t as impressed by the 21st century incarnations.
They’re great as reliable tools and great if you like meaty bass. That 39 sadly went but is with someone who treasures it! 🎯
Warm sound of 1934 style O
It’s got hood poke that guitar!
'34 Style O for me
A damn fine guitar.
either trileon or Dobro m27
🎼🎯🎼
1) Thank you, Martin! :-)
2) I would imagine that playing slide will sound "cleaner" if you use flat-wound strings. (Indifferent if you'd prefer a "cleaner" sound.) And I have picked up that flat-wound strings used to be more common than now. - Could you (or anyone else reading this) point me to a piece (on RUclips, on Spotify) featuring a resonator guitar with flat-wound strings and slide playing? - Much obliged! :-)
Anything is possible and you’re welcome to experiment to see if it works for you, but mine and my friends experience is that flat wound strings on resonators sound pretty bad.
Good technique allows anything on roundwound strings and you get the rich sound with the upper harmonics.
@@TheWashboardResonators Thanks again, Martin, after the mere "thumb up". I happened to find a clip with flat-wounds, so in case you should be interested: ruclips.net/video/2aiBB7QOqWo/видео.html.
D'Addario EFT Flat-top strings are a great wire to use. Warms up the tone and last forever. Give them a try if you haven't yet. D'Addario EFT13 strings are all I have ever used on my Mule steel tricone. I love them.
@@J.Dove3DThank you. :-) In the meantime, I have become fond of Thomastik JS110 for flat-wound strings. I have mounted them on my resonator guitar, and I love them there. As well as on a 6-string banjo, a western guitar and a "super strat". However, I have become fond of D'Addario NYXL round-wound strings for some other guitars.
Build guitars in open G?
Don’t know what this means. 🙃
@@TheWashboardResonators tuned strings in open G? Or EADGBE?
1934 National style O
Good choice! It’s a beaut!!
Whatever you recorded with didn't do the timbre of these instruments justice. Old Nationals have a mojo that's hard to compete with, regardless if it's steel, brass, or wood; tricone or single cone. One you didn't play, that's on my bucket list is a 30s El Trovador. But you've got a great collection.
It’s a great way to hear the differences. They come across loud and clear. Played a few El Trovadors. Always great. Pretty too.
1935 Natoonal Trojan & 1939 Regal/ Dobro M-45 ❤🌈
🎼🤘🏻🎼
The 31 triolian very similar to one rory Gallagher used “though I think his was a National Duolian” but pretty similar sounds anyway that would be my choice as rory is my hero there is only one man that sounds better and that’s “Gerry Douglas” of Allison Krause and union station Gerry is the master.
It’s the exact same year and model as Rory’s. 31 Triolian. I bought it for that reason. There is a video about buying vintage resonators on here where I find another 31 Triolian for a Rory fan. I compare the two.
@@TheWashboardResonators cool many thanks great content 👍👍
20 second 36 s
🙄
2014 has a soft sound
Yep!! Nice guitar!
@@TheWashboardResonators Dobro Duolian 1996 seems impossible to find.
I’ll have to be honest with you Martyn, they all sound bad, you may as well give them all away… to me… ;)
Great stuff! ;)
Okay. Send a truck. 🥴
I tried that with his SG, didn't work :(
14 fret 30s DUOLIAN My Fave National sound , And yes even over the amazing Tricon sound I am Partial Because I love them so much , I am still mad at you For putting Holes In Her for volume pots , Just fucking with you It dose hurt my heart a little , But I get it You need what you need To do Your Gigs. How eles could you pay For all those smoking Vintage Nationals Ha Ha ENJOY MY BROTHER
I have a minimum buffer in my bank account and if the buffer grows and there’s enough to get a guitar I get it.
The old Duolian was recommended to get gigging by the top guys. They said you couldn’t restore it as it was too chewed up so take it forward. Make it work. It’s a keeper.
I think 14 fret mid 30s Duolians are consistently some of the most powerful Nationals.
I like tricones too. Especially in person. There’s a richness that is incredible.
Keep on truckin!

Say you're wealthy without saying, you are wealthy
Most definitely not. But I like to save for months then drop on something at a good price. These are my pension.
This guy just likes to show off his guitars
I’m a professional musician that likes to get the bands name out to a wider audience so we sell more tickets and get people on our mailing list.
I do this by making free content and sharing information and videos people may find useful that get seen by fans of blues music the world over.
Also the advertising revenue literally goes into a joint bank account and only gets used for day to day costs like; for CD’s, poster printing, t-shirts and recording studio fees.
Therefore every time a video is watched it goes towards helping our profitability and ability to keep working full time.
We both pay our mortgages from gigging and selling merch (all over the world now thanks to this channel) and have children (one as young as 6 weeks old now) being brought up and paid for by their fathers playing music with other artists and this band.
We’re selling more tickets year on year, of which this channel in a small way helps.
At every gig now we meet people that tell us they like our videos and came out to a show.
It’s a completely positive situation that helps us as independent artists grow based on altruism and sharing knowledge through videos.
If we spent our time just leaving vaguely negative and troll-y comments on RUclips videos then it wouldn’t really help grow our career and therefore our families livelihood.
Positive and fun videos giving people that don’t have the chance to compare this many guitars the ability to hear them and decide which type they may wish to buy themselves seems like a good video subject.
If you watch these videos and come away with ‘we’re showing off’ and not ‘the guys promoting his band’ in a shitty post covid gigging world then it says more about your projection and personal issues than what we’re really trying to achieve here.
In the first few days of this video I had a few messages thanking me because people had found it useful.
They got it.
Go hug someone you love or let them hug you. Climb a mountain and watch a sunset. Call a friend and tell a joke.
There’s a life shaped hole in your heart.
