There'll be a chance to see these trees up close and personal soon, although I'd be grateful if you could leave the axes at home! Parts of this monster-build will be on display to the public for the first time at Salute 2020/21 in London on 13th November. Do feel free to come and say hello if you're there...
@@GeekGamingScenics And the spray bottles get clogged at some point too so they don't spread evenly or with a fine mist anymore. Great idea for that garden sprayer Luke!
ya I've seen everyone who makes gaming boards switch back and forth between hands as they are sealing off the tables. and Luke just set it on auto...good stuff man.
This video has so much great info packed in. The liquid latex dip, the garden sprayer for the scenic cement, the contact cement vs super glue - this is why I love your content, thanks for this man!
Seconded. Regardless of how the trunk is made, you've set a high-quality standard for wargaming trees. The glimpses into your mass-production line for them was informative. Perhaps you could review how you plan and prepare for mass builds like that? Not in detail, perhaps a few minutes on your process.
"a fat lad wi a load of wotsits on his fingers", love an unexpected laugh when I'm learning new things. You're so fab, thanks for all the brilliant tutorials.❤️
As someone who also makes LARP props you could possibly speed up the process by adding craft acrylic in 3 to 1 ratio with your liquid latex you could colour and coat in one go
Brilliant vid. I live in Australia and use the uprooted roots of woody weeds (a byproduct of my work) as basic tree armatures (because free is cheaper than cheap) Many of the techniques you showed here are completely transferrable and will work well to make my next batch of trees better looking and harder wearing. Fanks bruvvah!
those latex skin webbings look like tent caterpillar webbing. So if you left them on, you could have trees suffering a severe tent caterpillar infestation. Or possibly Mirkwood spiders, if you're doing fantasy terrain. Add a few mini spiders to that, and it would look rather convincing.
I did one of those tree armatures with seafoam using the geekgaming base ready glue. I found as long as you hold it in place for a second it held it to the tree much better than other glues.
Couldn’t stop laughing at “if it can take an axe, it can take a fat lad with wotsits all over ‘is fingers”. Even writing it made me laugh again. Brilliant. Great tutorial as well!
Thank you for your videos they help me show my nieces and nephew that they can use their imagination in the hobby and that their projects will take time.
You've got a very robust bush, Mr Fellows. I bet it can take a right pounding. The latest Chuck Tingle book, "Pounded in the Bush by a Fat Lad with Whotsit Fingers"
i use sponge to get stronger trees. First i mix it, then i use a mix of colour and white glue. Takes very long to dry but it's rocksolid. Since it gets smaller at it dries, a second passage is necessary. It's great for dense trees and hedges.
OK, so normally I just roll my eyes at the thumbnails on RUclips videos, but I have to say that yours legitimately made me chuckle. Love your channel, your work is fantastic!
This was so fun! I have always wanted to make a gaming table that was coverd in trees but as you mentioned, I am always afraid of them losing too much flock all over the place. And honeslty 60 trees in two days! Wow, I feel like that is pretty managable, even for myself who is a small-time hobbyist. Thanks for another great video!
After the liquid latex it's pretty similar to how I've done trees, but your starting point looks so much better! Definitely going to have to see how easily I can get the other materials, I love the woodland scenics armatures.
As a railway modeler I was surprised to see a wargamer using Woodland Scenics products as they a mostly known as a model railway scenery company. Although your trees are designed for wargaming they would also be perfect for a portable model railway that goes to shows. As for a home layout you could skip the last bit.
Don't know how you learned your skills but you've nailed it. I'm not a wargammer but I really like to watch your videos. No one I know around here plays games and that's a shame because it really seems like fun. Being a old guy with few friends sometimes sucks. 😂

Liquid latex is fantastic. I used to use it back in the day for larp costumes and weapons. You can mix it with most acrylic or latex based paint just stay clear of paints with strong chemical scents (terpentine, etc) and untested spraypaints. Some of these can melt latex and results in a stickyness that can last for years. It can probably do everything PVA does. Just differently. Its a more flexible alternative. Fun fact for Larp weapons we found 3 dips was adequate to make a weapon that would last for years.
That's amazing! I'd previously been dubious of sea foam's ability to stand up to the most destructive force known to humanity - players! Now though, I have to say I'm a convert. Great work Luke!
Absolutely maganificient they look really good! Two questions. 1.Have you ever painted the trees after with an airbrush? 2. if its trade secret or whatever, how much did these cost to make minus all of your labour? I Love the Trees! Hell I Loved The Autumn Color Myself But MEH Either way, THERE AMAZING!!! GREAT IDEA! THE SPRAYER! MOOHAHAHA!! Nifty!! SAVED IT FOR FUTURE IDEAS!! THANKS!!
I was not convinced by the durability of Sea Foam so for my trees I used the same armatures but used a kind of 3D foam that is put in gutter to keep out leaves. Like a very porous sponge structure. Tore it bits then painted it before using. Might be good if someone isn't making so many trees that they can justify filling a bucket with latex.
Have you considered how Liquid Latex changes over time? I've used it a lot for prosthetics and they simply break down over 6 months because it's an organic material. Might be ok under all the varnish and sealer but just interested how they will stand up over time.
Luke, what did you do to prevent or hide those unsightly drips of the contact adhesive? Rest of the build is pure genius, not least the garden sprayer!
They look great. How much do you think each tree costs in the end, £5 or £6? I'd love to have a good copse or orchard for my rank'n'file gaming but it's usability is a concern. Does a magnet solution work well for trees (so I can remove it for a 20 unit base). Or maybe a short bolt, with a nut on the base/ground that the tree could be screwed into (might take to long to do that during play).
Hot damn!! That’s amazing. I have been losing flock off my trees like a gym coach loses hair. I need to order some of your glue. Will you ship to Okinawa?
I tried making tree's with flock sponge once it was a pain, then i say Jermys from Black Magic Craft cheap dollar store tree's. I got bunch done in one night using a his idea. Thank you BMC
You should put together a bundle with everything you need to do one full pack of armatures. I bet it would sell like hotcakes. Would one pack of seafoam, flock and sealant be enough do you think?
Okay so what he's calling seafoam is actually supertrees. And it has a plant that smells like lichen and looks just like what you see except he's broken it off of the stems. On the stems they look very much like very real trees. But what he's doing with it is also impressively creative and I'm going to try it. This plant grows in Scandinavia and it can be ordered from Scenic Express in the United States. I'm not sure where he gets it I guess I could look in the details.
I did that almost the same way with my teenage kids last weekend, the armatures are great, bit if you use poly fiber in sted of seafoam its farter and becomes tight packed in the leaves pretty fast. And a question, why dont you use graffiti spraycans? They are about 3-5 pounds pr 400ml and is the best paint they do in spraycans
@@GeekGamingScenics thats pretty cheep, and if the quality is okey, its not bad.
