The biggest W to me from this years cup was having all my friends and the people I look up to smoke my weed (even if I had to corner them with a one hitter 😂) as far as the cup it is a bit of a popularity contest but there’s no way to stop a real grower from spotting his bud, it’s like can you spot one of your children in public in a crowd? I didn’t come top 10.. however I was top 20, but at the end of the day i can hang my hat on the fact that mine, and maybe 3-4 other peoples weed was damn near gone at the end of the 5 hour judging, because if your weed sucks people will not smoke the 💩 out of it 😹🤷🏽♂️💯
For a grow competition I always thought there should be three different genetics that everyone has to turn in then have a personal grow labeled "freestyle" for anyone to vote on. ✌️💚🌱

I will back the statement that good lemon strains look suspiciously bunk, but once you smell and smoke it, you’re convinced!

15-20 years ago when medical started in CA there were hash clubs. The popped up right when dabs first started. Eventually the state cracked down on the smoking. They had to become private clubs as smoking is not allowed in any public places in the state, even outdoors. I know here in ME they have similar laws that would stop any large scale smoking event. Although, obviously that’s a state thing, so maybe in the future they would be more open to changing that.

We had a lady Dr. come to our warehouse & just smelling to choose. I wish I could remember her name! She was testing terpenes for PTSD. Said she was able to test urine & match which terpenes worked best for each patient! I’ll try & get her name today. Great show yall❤
I think they should give ya a “competition box” and for example if they had 90-100 samples to have them only labeled as the #1, sealed and give them 30-60 ish days to sample and rank them. Have each sample 3.5 grams. this gives a person to sample multiple times if they aren’t greedy. The way they should suggest is have .25-1 gram samples and empty pallet/sober before consuming the strain and just like a wake-n-bake u def can know which strains are hitting more and more flavor. To have the lineage, who’s it’s from, labeling/branding just shouldn’t be involved in the judgment. the way it would be best done is have it open to sales to the clubs/event and the “judges” could buy the kit/judgment flower and the paperwork. Than this makes it so the judges are broad range, the venders and host are all paid and the corruption if publically listed who’s who is gone. there’s soo obvious corruption on these events I wouldn’t ever trust current ones on what’s top chosen as being top. It’s a ad for venders to say they are “best” but it’s really a ad cost
Than once final 10 are picked, have public and label as numbers . having names and who grew it = never works
Never been to any official weed event, but my weed gets heavy compliments when anyone asks for a pull while I’m out walking my roommates dogs.
In the MN cup, everyone picked up their weed 30 days before the event.
That is not how they did it. They let judges pick up the edibles and beverages but flower was a select number of judges behind closed doors with samples being dropped off only a few days before the cup. I was going to submit a flower sample myself but they wanted 55Gs and I couldn't spare that at the time. The Legacy Cup had its own downfalls but was a success overall it seemed. It was only their 4th cup and we just got legal rec so hopefully with time, it'll get better.
@billwest2852 I see. Thanks for clearing that up. I just remembered seeing that you paid a certain amount to be a judge, and then you picked up something before the actual event itself. I thought that was the herb itself.

The Show was hitting on all cylinders this week. It was fully crystallized & frostier than a snowman's taint.
It smelled absolutely amazing like a sasquatch who stepped in skunk shit while ripping a gasser.
It tasted even better than it smelled & the exhale was like being mugged by the terp burglar.
The show was virtually lumber free & perfectly trimmed with zero crows feet.
I look forward to our Saturday wake & bake's every week.

Suggested for Cup Awards: Judge's Choice, ranked 1st-5th....with allowed prejudging, and People's Choice, shared ranking of top 10% of entries. (i.e. 90 strains = 9 People's Choice Awards) and a single "Best in Show" based on highest unweighted combined Judge's and People's Choice selection. Also suggested specific awards for Best Terpene Profile, Best High, Strongest Single Toke, Sourest Sour, Sweetest Sweet, Fruitiest Fruit, Smokiest Smoke, Top OG, and so on. Best new strain is also a thing maybe, so is Best IBL.
Recently had a batch of Dante's Inferno and it was incredible man. Like probably best tasting weed I've had this year. Can definitely see how it would win a competition. It's a Tiki Madman strain if anyone was curious.
I don’t know how you’re ever gonna judge that. So many participants. So many judges. So many opportunities to not even see a majority of the samples.
Not sure about logistics but you should do a judges choice where they send their entry a month before and ech judge gets a 1g sample so you can fully judge. The rest of the oz is put out on the day for the people to judge
In my average experience in Pennsylvania zips are usually 100-200 these days. Decade or two ago maybe 300. Dispo can range from 150 to probably close to 3
Who doesn't remember scratch-n-sniff books ??? Make the "Big Book of Terps" a scratch-n-sniff with real terps, flavinoids, thiols and esters !!!

How do you possibly judge it without a clear head for each I feel like the effects will get skewed they blend into each other how would you it just seems like not the greatest system for judging it unless it's for taste

Early ht cannabis cups- in Amsterdam- had judges get samples 2-3 weeks before, smoke yourself to narrow it, then the day of everyone comes together and tells their favorites
So if one person missed a good one , chances are not everyone did. CReam rises
Might I suggest blind taste tests. Then more or less reverse engineer,based on terpine profile after having experientially chosen a favorite or rank specimens.
I judged past HTCC’s (‘93,96 & 99 with 50,500 then 5000 other judges. The most counterproductive practice I noticed was tossing all varieties of samples into the same joint .

Sight is more important for men it seems. Ladies tend to lean heavier on a stronger sense of smell.
Smell is where it is at. Then is how it makes you feel. Looks is only important when you dont have access to other factors, such as when a person is overwhelmed by choices in a shop and not allowed a sniff test.
Karma Cup here in Ontario Canada we have a couple weeks to judge then the event happens after that.
Scotty is off. Banner is a true connoisseur. Smell,taste , effects and lastly looks.
How it's grown should not be a top question unless you want to hear recharge or grow dots to give them an award as a product promotion.

1 day per flower, would tell u ,, so 90 day real judge befor the cup then just do a hang out and tast contest. on looks smell and size..lol just a idea lol so u could have a big 90 day contest , and that 1 day event would be based on the loooooks and smelll and size , so always find random judges that dont know the name of the flower its all based on just smoking the flower and not knowing anything behid it,,

Dude it's getting cold in MN! My garage grow room has cement floors and I'm looking into a couple things and wondering about your thoughts. I want to get both my grow tents and water buckets off the floor, I'm concerned about both the dirt and water being in contact with the cement floor and getting too cold. I was considering using some of that pink insulation foam board you can get big sheets for pretty cheap from Menards/Home Depot and throwing it under my tents, thoughts? anything better/cheaper??? That foam insulation will work and if it's still too cold add a germination mat
I know this is 8 weeks ago but milk crates and plywood make it good and room for small heater maybe rap the bottom with material that's what I'd do running in garage good luck
If your judging then you don’t judge on you liking the flavor you judge on how the flavor sticks to your pallet, does it last a while on your pallet? Does the flavor last the whole bowl or joint? Or is it good up front and fade out?
truth, also I like to judge how clean it burns, is it burning your throat or is it not combusting.

Our weed may be stronger now. But I call BS on 10 times stronger. Testing back in the day put the strongest weed (Maui Wowie) at about 11%. The way they tested was whole plant. Now they only test flower. I'd be very interested to see the numbers testing under the same method. My guess is 2-3 times stronger.

A lot of us being working folk unfortunately, can only afford a weekend trip to the cup. A long judging period only works for locals.
The ‘Pick Me’ thing was a turn off, let the herb speak for itself.
I would love it if they could claim theirs after voting has stopped. Then we can smoke with the grower and root for them when the winners are announced.

I don't think competitions are important or even needed . It (the flower) has gotten so good that like the Dude I need a day to sample one cultivar. Too much good weed I'm doing my best to deal with it.

It’s a giant pile of snobbery and favoritism. All tests should be blind. In the end it’s the effects that matter. Ok, look, smell, and judge texture but smoking to get the effects is why we do it. No way to fairly test 90 buds in a day.

1) ONLY the moderator (Banner) should have knowledge of the sample entered and its provider. Only when anonymity is maintained between competitors and judges will a fair competition result

Still working on getting a strain here going that has that stink from the 90s early 2000s that nasty skunk dank smell and bud structure sucks people breed that stuff out for sake of legality I have some seeds from back then but I have t gotten to them I have a catpissy straight up ammonia strain I’m going to use in a crossing sometime here cuz it’s got that deep dank reek but now I gotta find a nasty skunky strain I’ve tried so called skunk 1 super skunk all that no smells like I rememebr came from them I’m thinking of getting some kind of hash plant from Middle East folks I know some true mazar from Bahlki region and seeing what I can get out of it
