- Hi everyone! Here is a short video update about what's been going on in residency. I decided to apply for fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery! I will be posting much more about the process in the future.

I discovered your videos shortly after I finished my med school application, and as I waited for an answer, your videos were so encouraging and informative! I found out the day after Thanksgiving that I was accepted to my med school of choice, so I'm even happier that you'll be posting more videos in the coming months!

Great to hear from you again, Andrea! It would be awesome to see more videos with MD/PhD's or surgeons. I am a scribe and have seen many internists and their subspecialties, but very little on the surgical side! It would be great to have some more perspective as I look forward to medical school!

Hi Andrea! Thank you for continuing to share your path to doctoring (I've been a follower for several years now!). Good luck with the fellowship...I know you will end up somewhere ideal for you. Could you discuss how you went about ranking your list of programs for the residency match? What were some of the considerations that helped you rank-order your list after interview season (ie learning opportunities, outcomes of former residents, program reputation, geography/demographics, cost of living, post-interview impressions, how your significant other factors into the decision, and other things that non-medicine people don't even think about :-)

I can't believe you apply for a fellowship 2 years in advance! Is that how it's commonly done when it comes to fellowships?

So you'll get matched for a fellowship before you start your 3rd year of residency? Do you still have to finish the last 2 years of residency or will you start the fellowship fall 2017?
I had no idea you had to apply for fellowship so early? like you still have 2 years of residency before your fellowship right? (hello from a european medstudent!)
Hey Andrea! I wanted to ask since I'm sure you'd know but is there such a thing as "general ophthalmology" if that's the right term. It seems every opthamologist goes through a fellowship but do some just finish residency and go on to practice? What is their scope of practice? From what I see in the feild everyone is a subspecialist
There is absolutely general ophthalmology. The majority of residents still go into general ophtho and not fellowship. A general ophthalmologist primarily will do cataract surgeon, but can also manage all kinds of medical retina, glaucoma, cornea, and plastic problems. They just won't do more advanced surgeries within those sub-specialties, but can still do all kinds of things and see a huge assortment of patients.

Hello every body name is Steve I want to apply for a medical school and I have an associate degree in biology why an excellent score and I plan to do 3 mouths of voluntarism at a hospital before I apply . Yes, but often not as much as you make in residency.

Hi I'm from Philippines and my father is black American and my mom is Filipina but my father abandoned me living in Philippines is very uncomfortable for me I was bullied up to now because I'm so ugly I'm 48 yrs old now I'm a female all I want is a kind hearted surgeon you know who can practice on my face my ugly face turn into good looking face..
