- Neo Soul Chords are all the rage these days, and I thought I'd give you a couple of basic ideas for how to construct them and make them sound good if you're starting out. I'm not going to focus on progressions (that's for next time!), just voicings.

What a fantastically straight forward, slower paced well explained tutorial on how neo-chords can be constructed - really excellent thank you!
I love neo-soul. This is a beautiful way of teaching how to create a sound for it.
Exactly

Thank you. I now know how lush, jazzy chords are made. Now I can make smoother hip hop beats!
Cool. I'm the opposite: I can make the jazzy chords but don't know how to make hip hop beats :).
The explanations were easy to understand. The teaching technique is awesome. I'm a Fan.
Welcome aboard :)

Exactly this. I still have a lot of work to do but this is the first time the concept has been explained so simply and beautifully. I had a moment halfway through where the gap between what understand and could "see" and where I wanted to end up was bridged and it was the most exciting and rewarding feeling! Thank you. I agree :)

I thought the same thing. The little orbs floating around. Distant memories
The softness of your voice, the calmness that you radiate out while explaining, the tempo that you choose for narrating in order to teach us new things, the patience that you have and the precision and quality of the content of the lessons: all this is excellent even brilliant. Thanks for being our teacher. By the way the tone of your voice is beautiful. I like to listen to your voice. And the way you speak is relaxing and has something very peaceful, kind and generous about it. You're definitely a gentleman.

Best ever explanation and demonstration of neo soul chords I’ve ever seen in all my 30 years as a musician. Love it!
Can you make a video on how to tame a horse in minecraft?
What do you mean? This IS a video on how to tame a horse in minecraft. You must play it neo soul chords to sooth and capture its mind.
YES
good ass comments
Funny question and legendary answer
You pianists and your ten fingers.
Carpenter pianists sometimes only have nine :)
haha....thanks, i am a guitarist, and i need to conquer the piano...for compositional reasons...i don't need to cook on the piano...but beable to do some interesting things on it. this video helped. thanks.
Anwyll Music Perhaps consider a DAW with a midi piano to make it easier :) FL Studio or Reaper.
Actually 8 fingers and 2 thumbs

This is the best neo soul explanation I have ever heard. Explaining it in this simple way reflects your genius mastery of the concept.
Thank you!
your videos get better and better and better and never disappoint!can't wait for the progression video.thanks a lot and please keep up the good work!!!
Really love the explaining of the concepts/principles of constructing the chords themselves as opposed to just playing them and saying “here are some neo-soul chords.” Really appreciate the vid please do more!! 🙏🏼🙇🏻♂️
Opened doors to something altogether fresh and a new way to sense and express music.
You're a PHENOMENAL teacher. Thanks for the video! But seriously, I can't get over how thoroughly and concisely you explained everything.
Please keep hiding the fact that BLM really means white lives don't matter. Don't let the white catch on!!!
Great video!! You built the basic chord and then explained the expansions. Perfect!!!
Waiting for next week. Please don't delay😊 You made it so simple! Thank you so much!
I cannot decline a request from the esteemed Mr. Holmes. :)
I really liked the way you taught this. Thank you for taking the time to make tutorials like this!
Im a korean guy trying to compose r&b music by my own(just for fun), and i just found this video the most helpful among all youtube lessons. No, honestly im gonna watch only his videos from now, and that would be so enough for beginners like me to start with. Thank you so much
This is a really clear explanation of this technique. Better than a lot of others. This distills dat dirty sound down to its real key elements. Good stuff man!
I LOVE your break down to these chords!
One of the most helpful tutorials on youtube... You killed it! Thank you so much!
You’re a great teacher! I can tell you’re genuinely exited to be teaching!
I’ve been trying to figure this stuff out for years and you cleared it up in under 10 minutes. Subscribed
Cool. Welcome aboard.
brilliant! I was trying to understand this for a while now! this will make a big difference to my next album
Great! Send me a link when it's finished!
How did it go
Thanks a lot for this. Those chords are so smooth. I can't wait till I can improvise these kind of progressions.
You freakin' did it! I was so apprehensive before you began playing. Awesome.
Guitar player here, love this instruction. Thank you.
Incredibly cool chords, brother. Love the clusters and open chords, the lushness and tastiness!! Thanks so much for all of your videos.

As a beginner at the piano, I found that your tutorials are amazingly, simple, straight to the point, no complications. I am interested in jazz (and r&b) I would like you to cover some fundamental exercises that put more emphasis on developing the left hand independence, which I believe is important. Especially for those who do not come in with a background in classical studies. For example, I am able to go through the relatively easy tunes and chords etc.. but when it comes to practicing simple blues with walking bass lines, or some interesting L.H. harmonic movements I am practically frozen. Thanks for all this great work.

No time wasted. I love this video as a beginner. Happily subscribed.
Beautifully explained. Many other video explanations don't rely dwell on why there is this clustering going on. They just do it and not explain the thinking behind it.
A fantastic video, thank you! I love the cluster notes idea - very useful concept.
wow! brilliant, cannot wait to get my keyboard and come back here, you're such a good teacher!
You're a teacher by nature (besides being a musician). Thank you so very much.
AMAAAAAZIIING!!! I loved it!!! Your explanations are perfect! I always feel more capable after your videos.. thanks AND I APPRECIATE IT that now you have a visual aid( the midi) as requested.😊😊
Sure thing!
Man, you have very good stuff in your channel. Congrats. Very simple, straight to the point. It helped me in many when I played.
Thanks Rafael, glad to know I helped you out!
thank you so much. your videos are some of the best ive seen. super easy to understand and follow.
"Your instruction is structured, clear and masterfully explained!. "Good teachers make complex principles understandable, that's why you have another subscriber here!. ....."off to watch the next one!. "Great video..."quality instruction!!.👍
another crucial element....electric piano sound! Acoustic piano doesn't always AS well with clusters.
What do you mean by this?
Sam Novak he means these neo soul cluster chords sound best using Rhodes/Wurlitzer sounds.
Im thinking. " yeah of course" but then I realized to a lot of people this might not be common knowledge..Yes absolutely the wider/softer dynamics of electric pianos are essential
Truth brother

amazing lesson! I completely understand what pianist/keyboardist are doing with inverted and extended voicings 10 out of 10
You are the best teacher I've found on youtube! I can definitely understand, I've wanted to learn these.
Cool :).
You can also think of those minor 11ths as a Dm triad with a C major on top. Then, the Dm 13th is a Dm with a Cmaj 7 on top.
Precisely. That's called stacked chords, or polychords. I have a couple of videos on those topics if you search.
Was just thinking the same thing when you start delving into different key signatures and can't remember the million cluster notes Mangold was playing lol. Seriously, I bought a MKS20 library thinking I knew how to play this stuff and clearly I didn't. This is definitely helping me get there tho :) Thanks so much for this walkthrough
I like boobs
This is so handy - thank you!
Thank you for making this, it was a very insightful video!
Damn I like you!
Thank you for the great lessons. I miss my piano teacher since she moved abroad and you are helping immensely! I'm 45 and have only been studying a few years, and you take the mystery away from what is quite advanced stuff for me.
Great video tutorial. I'm not a piano player but have sang and played with some who get this sound and I've often wondered what they played which made their chords so colourful. Thank you very much.
You're welcome Babu.
Really useful that concept of 'clustering'. I have always tended to space things out and was trained to avoid having a third note in the left hand etc. But part of that nice neo soul sound is having all the notes close together and creating some dissonance/harmonics out of that. I really like these close together soulful chords. It's really due to Marc Rebillet that I've started looking into this because he's always playing nice major and minor 9ths and soulful chords and it sounds so sweet.
Don't forget 9sus4 and 13sus4 chords! Check out my lesson on quartal voicings for some ideas:

Fantastic somebody that really slows things down and explains what’s going on.
Thanks. I just got a comment on another video that I should slow things down, so I guess your comment cancels it out :)
You are doing amazing work thank you!
man great explanations can't wait for the applications part.
Thanks for this. You have just taught me more in 9 minutes than ten years of tinkering around on my own!
Teachers tend to do that.
this is the best Chanel, I have learned a lot since I subscribed to your Chanel. similar channels like this are geared towards sales pitch scams. thanks for sharing your wisdom for free.
Thank you MangoldProject! You are an amazing teacher. Learned so much from you. Really improved my piano skills! Your teaching is amazing!
Glad to hear that.
I really appreciate this video, I learned soul chords by ear, but u put a method to the madness
No need to go mad over chords. :)
ah man i wanted a tutorial on this type of chord progression!! THANK YOU SO MUCH (i didnt knew what this chord progression was called)
Thank you. This was very informative. I am trying to learn more about neo soul and jazz so hope to see more of you! Cheers.
I do lots of stuff, not just neo soul (actually this is a very recent foray for me). I hope you find other topics that interest you among my videos.
can't wait for the next video!!!
Really helpful! Thanks so much. Definitely worth the watch
Very good instructor clear direct to the point
Verry good explained.Thank you for the tipps👍🏻
Simple and on point explanation of chord voicing. Thank you, amigo

My pleasure, Rafael.
Dude, you just changed my life
I like it! Reminds or 90s R&B slow jams
sounds more like that than neo soul
amazing teaching keep up the great work
Thanks for the content. This was really easy to understand and very informative. It's much appreciated!

You're welcome.
Thank you for this good lesson, sir! You helped me a lot. :)
Amazing Video! These are really helpful. Please keep them coming!
Doing my best!
That was so beautiful
I discovered your channel months ago, but it seems like the Neo Soul videos were made just for me. I'm trying to challenge myself to write R&B music after years of only doing rock. I didn't understand why those simple major and minor chords weren't working! Thank you. :D
You're welcome. Send links to the songs in case you upload them somewhere :)
Why do I always end up in the Music theory side of RUclips! 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
Where were you initially headed?
Bruh, same 🤷🏼♂️
Incredible. Simple but very educational
Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing!
you're an excellent teacher. thank you!
Thx for little bit detailed explanation !
Thank you so much, you explain it so well!
It was very enlightening. Thank you very much.
Ah hah... clusters.... Must practice and implement asap! I knew how to put two chords together but the concept of the cluster in the middle of the two is very inspiring! Can't wait to see what I come up with. I subscribed and will be tuning in often. Thank you for sharing!
Welcome aboard! Be sure to check out my other neo soul chord tutorials, too.
Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge.
You're welcome Renato.
to me one of the best jazz piano teachers on youtube!!
Thank you!
I agree. The softness of his voice, the calmness that he radiates out while explaing, the tempo that he chooses in order to teach us new things, the patience that he has and the precision and quality of the content of the lessons: all this is excellent even brilliant. Thanks for being our teacher.
Damn, i had no idea you could play A,B,C & D all together and it could come out beautiful
Unbelievable video. Thank you so much. You are a gift!!
You're welcome. Don't forget to check out the sequel (look at the video's description!).
That's very useful. Thanks!
J'adore! Love this!
Thanks.
You're welcome Otuawan.
Wow!. Great explanations. Thank you. Subscribed
Great video as always ! :)
I love this channel
Great job! thanks for sharing your knowledge!! 🙌
You're welcome.
Beautiful Voicings and another helpful lesson. Some might call it Neo Soul. To me, it's the sunny L.A. Sound of the late '70s, 'Yacht Rock', whatever. But definitely from an era of Jazz schooled/ influenced Musicians like Donald Fagen, Richard Tee, Marc Jordan, David Paich, Neil Larsen on their Rhodes and Wurlitzers. Looking forward to your next lesson!
Really good stuff, I am a bass player looking to learn more on these chord types , looks like I have came to the right place :), well done !
Welcome aboard!
Great video and awesome teacher!
Many thanks.
I loved it!
