The most likely theory is that he is part of the music of creation. The One doesn't have a wife nor is He bound by the dangers of the world which the Council of Elrond explicitly says Bombadil isnt invulnerable
But Tolkien stated that he is not Iluvátar. Thories has been made here and there that aside from that theory, another one stated that he is one of the Valar.
Tolkien openly shows and or suggests when he helped out within the accordance to the first so that created the world and the scenarios to unfold. Even the Valar didn’t know what would happen when they arrived in Arda
The One doesnt have a wife and the Council of Elrond made ir clear that Bombadil isnt string enough to resist the full strength of Sauron- which the One is... being God.
I feel like he has to be some version of Eru Iluvatar in human form or perhaps a sibling of Eru who created a separate realm/world altogether, who discretely pops into Eru’s world here and there to help stabilize Middle Earth.
Tom is Tolkien in his own book... come on think about it. Tom was there before the rivers or the trees? He could make the ring dissappear but the dark forces would get to him. Metaphor for the calling to write the books. Like. He had to write the book in his head. So it would itch him to finish it like Bilbo itches to finish his book perfectly.
He only has power over his "domain" yet it allows the story to show his Dues ex Machina ability. And lets the reader settle into the mindset that this is the last point in the story where he or tolkien will play the part of deus ex machina. Letting them have the suspense that anything can happen and anyone can die. No ones going to get "saved" just because. Makes the aluvitar setting things into place have more meaning. Like. Gandolf saying to frodo. you where chosen and that is very good thing. Like picked by god.
He has quite a bit of background in other writings and he’s one of the main characters who hides the Entwives away for safekeeping. Also in Tolkiens writings Galadriel speaks to Fangorn. Yes the forest is the namesake of Treebeard. Before she finally wrapped up things as much as she could before leaving back to Valinor. That she’d return to help him find the Entwives when Beleriand returns from the sea ( after Dagor Dagorath basically or perhaps even sooner. I’d say something leads to it’s rise like Numenor as first rising) and this time she DID swear an oath finally in her life.
He also has many songs. Goldberry sings a few too. Tolkien Ensemble and other groups on Spotify has so much wonderful content that you wouldn’t believe that musically and vocally bring the songs and poems to life!!
I heard this guy is the Avatar of Light, making him *MELKOR's* arch-nemesis. He claims to have already been old since before the first rain fell on Middle Earth
Sounds logicalhe was one of Maiar who decided to stay in Middle Earth. But since he wasn't messing up with set order of things or affairs of mortals, Valar let him be. In a way, his approach was similar like Radagast's only he was around far longer.
My favourite theory is that Tom is the uninterrupted song of Arda/Creation. The true Spirit of Arda. It's what people of the world could have been like, before Melkor interrupted Eru's song. He's a small fragment of what Middle Earth could have been. This is why Tom is always singing, and cheerful.
I saw ome theory that suggested that tom bombadil was a manifestation of rhe music of the ainur and all of their good. While ungoliant is the manifestation of melkors corruption of the music. Both have very mysterious origins and both seem to be stupidly poweful

Its not about "liking it" I'm not a child, I respect tolkiens work and know the difference between a faithful adaptation and a bastardization/cash grab.
It's still funny how they left out in the film the most powerfull creature of Middle-earth. He was immune to the power of the ring, which kinda means he was a above the level of maiars (halfgods like Gandalf, Sauron), so he could be one of the Ainur (gods) in human form..
I like to believe that Tom is the opposite of ungoliant, where she is a representation of entropy chaos, he is sn embodiment of cosmic order that came from beyond the bounds of arda at the dawn of creation
I think more than likely he’s Middle Earth personified. Like Gaea. He was there at the beginning because in some respects he was the beginning: the first creation
If anyone wondering what he was supposed to be in the books was as our Santa Claus/The Spirit of gift giving/god like figure that watches and rarely intervenes.
Mysterious yes and possibly incomplete maybe? Are we not allowed to build an imagination off of someone else’s? Despite the obscurity of his character, I feel like he has to be some version of Eru Iluvatar in human form or perhaps a sibling of Eru who created a separate realm/world altogether, who discretely pops into Eru’s world here and there to help stabilize Middle Earth.
They could have put him in the movies. Everyone says he is too powerful for the movies but he doesn't do shit outside escorting the hobbits. He would have one appearance in the movies as a guide and then not seen or heard from.
Tom Bombadil was a cat. The character in the trilogy has got also a couple of 'puss in boots' characteristic. In the 'The Silmarils' you can get a hint who Tom Bombadil really is. It wasn't unpurpose that Tom Bombadil just took the one ring from Frodo and played with it like it was a toy without any dark consequence. He's an 'ainur'. That's why he was singing so much.
@@tammesikkema5322 he and goldberry are the personification of balance that’s always there and arda is the byproduct of the love between himself and Goldberry. Even to ALL the oldest elves even down to the first elves to awaken he was always there. Think opposite of Ungoliant & and the eldrich beings. Tolkien also stated some of them existed before Arda as well so that’s wild to think about too!!
@@Makkaru112 i am a bit unsure about him and goldberry being the personification of balance in Arda, but am pretty sure (if he isn't Illuvatar) that Arda isnt a byproduct of their love. And even if he IS Illuvatar, this is in conflict with Tolkien's own worldview I think, because this isn't a polytheist world he created. And all ainur existed before Eä came to be.
Here's a theory: Everyone thinks Tom was a Valar, but what if his wife Golfberry was the Valar for growth and plants. She wanted a life in Ada and created Tom in her image as the perfect husband. Maybe had help from Eru Illuvatar? I think its interesting that she's not in the foreground because she's hiding.
Yavanna is the Vala of growth and living things, she is married to Aule ( Vala of the earth) and iirc rarely left Valinor except for rare journeys to Middle Earth in the First Age. There were some other Valar and probably Maiar of lesser stature associated at least partially with nature. I do not think Goldberry is any of the named Vala or Maia, but she may be something else entirely, which makes your theory quite intriguing.
@@jackks2va it may be interesting enough to flesh out more from this point. You’ve got something good going. Keep on writing! Something wonderful may develop. “Unexpected Branches “ as Tolkien says!!!
Tom lived near the hobbits and his magic _blocked_ Sauron from knowing the importance of the shire Hobbits to the fulfilling of the song of Eru. Just as the ring of Nenya (a small portion of Saurons will empowered the ring and was redirected by Galadriel's noble needs and desires) it protected Lorien from the orks & Sauron so Tom protects the shire. Look at the three places the ring rested for thousands of years. In the shire, under the mountain with Golum and in the river bed by Lorien.
He is absolutely not strong in combat, his identity makes him immune to the ring power, but he's absolutely not a warrior, and wouldn't stand a chance against sauron
He only has mastery in his home base. Outside of it he has no powers. The barrow downs were still in his realm, as was obviously his house and the old forest surrounding it. He’s just a normal god like dude.

My theory is that Tom is Eru Ilúvatar
Theory: Tom Bombadil is actually a reincarnated version of Eru, the creator of middle earth. That’s why the ring doesn’t have an effect on him.
Tolkien already confirmed that tom isnt Eru. I personally believe he put Tom in there just to screw with us in the most wholesome way possible...xD

@@bubsjrd7290 You can read the Silmarillion to find out about most of the incredible lore that Tolkien had in mind (and was already working on for several decades before writing LOTR). The first 2 chapters are tough, and many many names are cited. Don't worry too much, keep in mind the main ones, ie those repeated often. The stories of those first ages of the world are incredible, and will make LOTR even better when you'll re-read it afterwards.
He’s the music created by the Valar that gave the world its shape.
OH TOM BOMBADIL TOM BOMBADILLOOOOO
The whole lotr universe and even eru illuvatar is merely the fantasy of tom and goldberry, the result of their love as they are through and by their love, it is the byproduct of their existence together.
Not an accident the dagger that injures the witch-king was given to the hobbit! Not an accident at all! If the future could be dreamed by Frodo in Tom's house, how much more did Tom know...and take "action" to reduce the threat!
Yep, that's Eru Ilúvatar right there and no one can tell me any different.
Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo!
Ring a dong! hop along! Fal lal the willow!
Tom Bom, jolly Tom, Tom Bombadillo!
Hey! Come merry dol! derry dol! My darling!
Light goes the weather-wind and the feathered starling.
Down along under Hill, shining in the sunlight,
Waiting on the doorstep for the cold starlight,
There my pretty lady is, River-woman's daughter,
Slender as the willow-wand, clearer than the water.
Old Tom Bombadil water-lilies bringing
Comes hopping home again. Can you hear him singing?
Hey! Come merry dol! derry dol! and merry-o!
Goldberry, Goldberry, merry yellow berry-o!
Poor old Willow-man, you tuck your roots away!
Tom's in a hurry now. Evening will follow day.
Tom's going home again water-lilies bringing.
Hey! Come derry dol! Can you hear me singing?
...
Hop along, my little friends, up the Withywindle!
Tom's going on ahead candles for to kindle.
Down west sinks the Sun: soon you will be groping.
When the night-shadows fall, then the door will open,
Out of the window-panes light will twinkle yellow.
Fear no alder black! Heed no hoary willow!
Fear neighter root nor bough! Tom goes on before you.
Hey now! merry dol! We'll be waiting for you!
Hey! Come derry dol! Hop along, my hearties!
Hobbits! Ponies all! We are fond of parties.
Now let the fun begin! Let us sing together!
Now let the song begin! Let us sing together!
Of sun, stars, moon and mist, rain and cloudy weather,
Light on the budding leaf, dew on the feather,
Wind on the open hill, bells on the heather,
Reeds by the shady pool, lilies on the water:
Old Tom Bombadil and the River-daughter!
Thanks! I needed that right now.

* me remembering that one time in my immortal when tom riddle was called tom bombadil *
What if it was Eru Illuvitar
Seducing theory but Tolkien did respond that he was not Illuvatár. But it's fiction, we can make anything of it
I thought so to but maybe he is Erus son or another Valar.
To me that was always the explanation
The most likely theory is that he is part of the music of creation. The One doesn't have a wife nor is He bound by the dangers of the world which the Council of Elrond explicitly says Bombadil isnt invulnerable
But Tolkien stated that he is not Iluvátar. Thories has been made here and there that aside from that theory, another one stated that he is one of the Valar.
Is Tom Ilùvatar in disguise, seeing his plan through?
I was just wondering that
Tolkien openly shows and or suggests when he helped out within the accordance to the first so that created the world and the scenarios to unfold. Even the Valar didn’t know what would happen when they arrived in Arda
The One doesnt have a wife and the Council of Elrond made ir clear that Bombadil isnt string enough to resist the full strength of Sauron- which the One is... being God.
@@Makkaru112 the most likely thepry is that Bombadil is part of the music of creation. He isnt God
Tom was definitely OP.
I liked this character too and wish a bit more background was provided although I definitely enjoy reading everyone's theories
Should have had a cameo in the films
I remember him. I've been trying to find more info on him but couldn't.
There is a lot about him. Ask me anything. I’ll also provide links too!😊
@@Makkaru112 lol this was YEARS ago. 😂
He sounds like another wizard like Gandalf
Sounds logicalhe was one of Maiar who decided to stay in Middle Earth. But since he wasn't messing up with set order of things or affairs of mortals, Valar let him be. In a way, his approach was similar like Radagast's only he was around far longer.
Lucky old man, even elves think you're ancient damn
Waiting for him to pop out in the rings of power with a packed pipe
My favourite theory is that Tom is the uninterrupted song of Arda/Creation. The true Spirit of Arda. It's what people of the world could have been like, before Melkor interrupted Eru's song. He's a small fragment of what Middle Earth could have been. This is why Tom is always singing, and cheerful.
Tom is Tolkien in his own story.
I saw ome theory that suggested that tom bombadil was a manifestation of rhe music of the ainur and all of their good. While ungoliant is the manifestation of melkors corruption of the music. Both have very mysterious origins and both seem to be stupidly poweful
I hope Tom is part of this amazon series coming out
I hope every hard drive containing that abomination of a show gets mysteriously liquefied and the world is spared from the trauma.
@@dirtnbloodnotherkids why so negative
@@straydragur because i love Tolkien and what amazon is making, is not Tolkien, its terrible, woke fanfiction by people who hate tolkien.
@@dirtnbloodnotherkids created by those who hate the world of middle earth? Doubtful. Many thought the same of the witcher and other series. Then they ended up liking them. Have doubts be cautious sure. But never hate and always try to look for the good. You may end up finding you like it. Imagine if the marvel fans did this with the MCU or star wars fans did it after a new hope. The fellowship was built on understanding and excepting differences to create loyalty and friendship.
@@straydragur wtf are you talking about? They have completely ignored the core tenants of Tolkiens work and lore, they fired all the Tolkien scholars off the set because they wanted to reimagine the story their own way. They hired sex scene coordinators. How can you know anything about Tolkien and think this show will do any kind of justice to his work? Its not about "liking it" I'm not a child, I respect tolkiens work and know the difference between a faithful adaptation and a bastardization/cash grab.
It's still funny how they left out in the film the most powerfull creature of Middle-earth. He was immune to the power of the ring, which kinda means he was a above the level of maiars (halfgods like Gandalf, Sauron), so he could be one of the Ainur (gods) in human form..
He's the plot armor.
Woton the one eyed wanderer
Please can someone tell me what the background music is? I've heard it so often but never found it
I think that Tom is similar to the nameless things, a bi-product of Eru and Melkor’s fighting
I dreamt of Tom bombadil tonight. My late father asked me to make a game of Tom bombadil, like pc game. Idk why lol
Certainly a Maiar at the very least, but I wouldn't be surprised if he were one of the Valar.
If anyone wondering what he was supposed to be in the books was as our Santa Claus/The Spirit of gift giving/god like figure that watches and rarely intervenes.
Tom is not Tolkien, nor Eru, and he is not a Valar, or a maïa. I like to think he is and will remain a super cool mystery. Maybe he is Santa.
What is the name of the song in this video?
When plot devise come in the form of charactor
Please algorithm gods let more LOTR vids reach the people
They could have put him in the movies. Everyone says he is too powerful for the movies but he doesn't do shit outside escorting the hobbits. He would have one appearance in the movies as a guide and then not seen or heard from.
I like his part in the books sad the movie left him out
One of the mysteries of Arda.
Yet other ainur are very reluctant with the ring. I think he might be illuvatar.
Sauron was an Ainur formed as a feline being named Telvido!! Also many artworks of Berúthiel and Telvido together!!
@@samratdey9486 maybe she likes a good scandal? Okay so not the valar of growth, who else could she be? What if Tom is Aule, making goldberry Yavanna?
It was only in the Shire for sixty years, this is mentioned in the book and movie.
@@soybasedjeremy3653 Tom protected the Hobits not the ring.

Is he stronger then Eru illuvatar?
@@JACKAL98 Yes, due to hax
He is absolutely not strong in combat, his identity makes him immune to the ring power, but he's absolutely not a warrior, and wouldn't stand a chance against sauron
He only has mastery in his home base. Outside of it he has no powers. The barrow downs were still in his realm, as was obviously his house and the old forest surrounding it. He’s just a normal god like dude.
I wanted to name my new kitten Tom Bombadil so bad, but we named him Rooster instead because I had to compromise with my wife.

Actually I thought Tom is the physical embodiment of eru illuvatar, Or Brahman, He is the caretaker of the dream of Maya.
I feel there could be an entire movie about the Hobbits interaction with Tom and the barrowwights. I have gone back and re-read the whole thing twice. It's an odd deal and wouldn't have fit in with the way p Jackson did his trilogy.
