  • FERREL on the Silver Coast, Portugal. It's our nearest village, a 50 minute walk from our house sit in Praia D'el Rey. We take a good look around the village, show you what it has to offer, and give you an introduction to the peaceful village life here on the Silver Coast of Portugal.
We have a chat with a local, Helder Ramos, from Rebeca, a centre of culture based in the village and learn a lot about Portuguese eating habits and the importance of the donkey in Portuguese village life of the past.

We really like Ferrel! It's small enough to easily walk around, with a few different restaurants, cafes and small supermarkets and it's so close to Peniche and Caldas da Rainha.
Baleal is just a short walk away... here is our Baleal video:
    ruclips.net/video/61CRLDUyLQU/видео.html
Ferrel also has RABECA - an excellent cultural hub, with an incredibly good value annual membership fee!

The way you sound is Férrel. There is no accent on the "e". The meal that you got seems expensive. Big chains are cheaper than small supermarkets. The breakfast and the snack meal is not what the Portuguese man said. It depends where people live in Portugal. The Breakfast is the most important meal on the day and on some areas of Portugal, the breakfast is, fruit, cereals, milk, etc. And not just a toast/coffee. The snack meal is, tea, biscuits, toast, etc. The farmers get wine, bread and dry ham/cheese for the snack meal.

@@joaorobalo9353 That's very interesting re: the meals in other parts of Portugal... and also that you thought €2.40 for a Bifana, €1.40 for a sande mista and €1.10 x 2 for 330ml bottles of dark beer was expensive! I'm looking forward to seeing prices back in the UK sometime... where the cheapest meal is the Boots Meal Deal 🤣 ~ Mandy

@@FrugalTravellers it depends, if no one buy them then the price will drop again, and again (1 cent). Can you buy 1L of Milk for 10 cents at Continente / Pingo Doce ? No. 🤣🤣🤣 So, Portugal is expensive.

Hello Mike! Thank you so much for such wonderful feedback! It's lovely to hear how much you enjoyed this video, and especially our chat with Helder.
We did ask him quite a bit about himself - I can't remember whether Helder was born in Canada, or raised there, but his family are all from Ferrel. They would come back for holidays, and he considers Ferrel home, and told us loads more great stories about his grandparents that we didn't record. It's brilliant that he has chosen to come back to Ferrel and set up a cultural centre!
Your suggestion for us to chat to more locals was very good, and it came a few months after this conversation in June, but we didn't want to mention the chat until the video aired. We were a bit hesitant about asking if we could record the conversation, but despite being in his casual cleaning clothes, Helder was definitely up for the challenge, and was a blimmin' natural in front of the camera! He's such a great guy! ~ Mandy 😁😊🇵🇹

Do you or your subscribers have any recommendations for nice accommodations from February 19 to March 23, 2024, 33 nights when I take another slow boat to China back home in Canada. Thank you. Hello Mike! Wow... that will be an amazing experience! 33 days is certainly a great amount of time to spend in New Zealand. Are you planning to base yourself in one or two places, or to travel around and explore North and South Island? I'm from the north of North Island, so it was obviously named Northland 😉🤣 It's beautiful but I think South Island is stunning. NZ can be expensive... when we're next there it'll be a challenge to stay on our US$25 per day budget each!
Hopefully someone can offer suggestions. We recently were invited round to drinks by some lovely viewers here in Praia d'el Rey, and they'd spent quite a while in NZ, and found accommodation very expensive. They ended up finding budget accommodation through a Facebook group, so that's a good option! ~ Mandy 😁😊.

It became a routine route and the few times I went to Praia D'el Rey, of course it was through Ferrel as well. For me, Ferrel is at the top of my search list along with São Bernardino along with the rest of Peniche. Most definitely a moment or two of saudades watching this one. Love to see the non tourist places and learn how the people live and what "issues" there are and how to get around them. Love the Rabeca Big Wave exhibition sculptures. Reminds me so much of the traditional Japanese Wave paintings. Lovely to hear about life in Portugal over the years. The colourful houses can also be found in Goa. Although now they are painting them for the tourists as there are very few true Goans left in India. Most have gone native. If you get there, try the cashew liquor. Firey.

Hi Lee & Mandy! We now have to go back and check Ferrell out. We often go for our Mexican “fix” at Cartel 71 or El Chilito. Not as economical as your meal but darn good for Mexican food in Portugal. Loved the piece on Rabeca cultural center.

Hello Sandra! Ferrel certainly has a lot more to offer than we'd thought... as there's loads on either side of the main road to Baleal and Peniche. A few people have mentioned El Chilito but yes, it's slightly out of our budget 🤣 Helder is so very interesting... we went in to look at the artworks on display and stayed for almost an hour! RABECA is a great organisation - check out their Facebook page for more information! Thank you for the great feedback ~ Mandy 😁😀

    Boa tarde Team MandyLee,
Them Huskies are gorgeous and seem well behaved.
Fiel crops, I'm only guessing that they cut the cabbage head and leave the base / roots to rott so that it will nourish the soil. Plus they don't have to carry unnecessary crop to the processing factory.
Sanswiches were reasonably priced and booze is dirt cheap! Not much more expensive than if bought in supermarkets.
Helder's English is brilliant, barely no noticeable accent.
Thanks for the upload, wishing the both of you a lovely week ahead 😎

Boa tarde, SERGIO! Thank you so much for your wonderful comment! We always look forward to hearing from you!
The huskies are absolutely gorgeous, and we feel part of the pack now! They're like family ❤
I'm not sure about the cabbages! This was filmed back in June when the drought was on, so I'm wondering if the grower decided to turn off the irrigation and let the cabbages go to waste, as the leeks in the field on the other side of the road were all well watered and healthy.
Helder's family is from Ferrel but he was raised in Canada. I think it's so lovely that he has come home and doing something so beneficial for the community!
As always, thank you so much, and we hope you have a wonderful week! ~ Mandy and Lee 😀😁

    Great video.
Just a word on the meals in Portugal. Our word lanche (frugal meal between lunch and dinner) comes from the English word lunch. It made its way into Portuguese, slowly but steadily and today nobody uses the Portuguese word for it, which was:merenda. In the Portuguese literature up to the middle of the twentieth century you can find it. The country people used it too. I am nearly 73 years old and when I was a child I used to spend September at my grandparents'farm in the north of Portugal and the word "merenda" was still the word the locals used.

    • @FrugalTravellers
      @FrugalTravellers  Год назад

Thank you so much for this, Eduardo. I find the way language evolves through time and space to be really fascinating. We first discovered the term merienda in Spanish when we travelled in Argentina. It was the 5pm snack of pastries and yerba mate they would have to fill in the gap between lunch and their very late dinners.
Where I am from in England, we use the term dinner for lunch and tea for dinner which is eaten at 5pm when people traditionally finished work. This causes confusion not only with foreign language speakers but with English speakers from other places too. 🤣🤣
Thanks for your input. We appreciate it. 👍

By the way, I am Filpa(Eduardo is my husband. This is his mobile phone because mine is not a smart phone) and I was in England in 1972 living with an English family as an au pair. They called dinner to the Sunday lunch, when all the family was reunited at the table for their traditional lunch with Yorshire pudding, roasted beef, potatoes and gravy. And they had high tea at dinner, on a Sunday, too.
