Do not be tempted to fit these drain valves.

- These drain valves seem like a good idea as you can fit them without draining the heating out and the ability to easily fit them where you want. So what`s wrong?

I was 100% going to fit one of these because I watched your old video on how to fit them.
Now I'm not 😂 thank you for both videos..
You are so welcome! It is ok if it is just temporary.
I installed one of these so I can drain my outdoor tap when it’s minus temps outside. It seems fine and has not leaked. It’s been installed about 5 years and I use it once or twice a year.
It is fine if not used for heating pipes.
I bought one of these as a desperate attempt to unblock my F&E tank feed , hammering didnt seem to work .But my Mrs said no just keep on hammering .So I did and t workd and I never used it .Glad I didnt thanks for the tip.
Right on
Good to learn about these, thanks Al! I’ve never come across them before, but will make sure never to use them!
I have however definitely encountered the problems you described at the beginning (the rubber seal becoming stuck inside the old drain off valve, the drain off valve being too tight to turn while in a difficult to access place, etc).
Happens all the time nigel.
Seems a good idea as you say, but have heard of these leaking before.
I'm actually working this afternoon on 2 drain cocks which are blocked up, so will give them a bit of a bang and see if they clear, if not then will probably get an arm full of black water as I get the innards out.. 🙄😁 Good job they are located in the garage..
Ah no worries then dave.
Thanks for the video
👍🍀
No problem 👍
Used one of these to connect my dishwasher some 23 years ago - still working and no leaks.
They are ok on the mains.
are there any alternatives to this type of drain valve? i often find that they never work when needed, mostly on immersions because they always get clogged up with the gunge in the tank.
Not that I know of.
They come in handy when there’s no draincock fitted
That small hole will soon block up.
Once you've drained it cut it out and put a tee in and do the next guy (might be yourself) a favour
They also drain a bit slow for my liking.
I have also used self tappers with success.
I find all those self-cutting type things block fairly quickly - same happened on my washing machine/sink stack. Can't stand 'em.
Thanks Bertie.
Keep one on the van to drain a leg in an emergency... but always then cut it out and put a proper one in.
Great advice Dan.
I fitted a self cutting tap unit, to install a washing machine. total disaster. I'm not sure if it was the unit, the age of the copper pipe or my error but the fitting leaked very badly. ever since then i've never trusted this type of fitting.
Thanks Andy.
I have done the same for both a wsshing machine and dish washer. Both times worked a treat (over 10 years back).
A SPOT ON BIT OF ADVICE
Thanks Ken.
