Yeah, the puny pixel pitch of a higher megapixel sensor on the M4/3 crop size has disadvantages in both rendering and low-light.. And both the OM-1 and OM-5 already have the high resolution modes to offer the good effects of more megapixels, without the disadvantages of miniscule pixel pitch. ~30 mpx would probably be a deal-breaker for me.

The improvements need to come in the form of cooling and processing to provide better video specs, and in terms of software features. Camera body design will play a bigger role at this stage as well to differentiate and attract customers.
I assume this camera will not have a stacked sensor, but instead have a backside illuminated sensor, more about image quality, then speed of operation of camera, to keep cast down.
@@AA-ni3km Honestly, even when cropping, I haven't noticed a huge difference. I still crop rather heavily with 20mp and get good results. Don't get me wrong, 40 mp gives you more, but in my opinion, its not enough to upgrade purely for resolution. I would rather have smaller file sizes and better video specs than see a high resolution sensor in an Olympus/OM body. The 25mp sensor in the Lumix cameras might be a good balance.
Size of body's is due to how much electronic components there fit in it. If you want all computational features, then the body size enlarges. That is physics. Also if you want high video resolution, the body's need size due to cooling. Heat issues make body's bigger. The sensor itself is just a small part of the body. But the sensor size gives lens size. That is where MFT excels.
Specs of IMX492LQJ sensor seem to suggest it is more a video camera than stills camera-oriented. There is no redout mode of the full sensor in 12-bit where it would exceed 17fps. Of course it might be that OM-3 does not have to be fast in stills.
The Sony 47MP mft sensor is for industrial applications. This is not going to be a new flagship, so it will either have the same sensor as the OM-5, or it will have the new BSI sensor in the OM-1 and OM-1ii. Pixel resolution is not everything, in fact, for the typical apertures used in landscape, street and wildlife (i.e. narrower than f/4.0 typically for mft) then 20-25Mp is the diffraction limit - so more isn't going to bring anything of value, just slower readout, lower dynamic range, more noise, etc. Putting out a rumour that this camera will have a new larger sensor is just lining people up for disappointment. Otherwise, great scoop. This is a really interesting looking camera!
That is a very handsome camera. I'm left a little limp as the OM-5 and OM-1 are both handsome and fit for purpose. I would assume that Olympus lenses of old had aperture controls. I don't know of any Oly lenses that that aperture rings and in fact Oly cameras can't make use of the rare ones that appear on some Pany lenses. So I'm hesitant about how Oly is going to handle aperture control - maybe a ring around the lens mount? Anyway I don't want to throw a wet blanket on this rumour. If OM systems actually does something new and something bold, even if it isn't for me, all of the photography community should all be happy.
If it has a metal body and dials that are etched it would be very interesting, plus of course the threaded shutter release button. Looking forward to see what it actually is
Exactly. Handsome sure, but different, not really. Where is that small rangefinder with an EVF? These can be extremely handsome - see the much loved PEN-F. There is nothing in the MFT market like that and sales data show immense interest in APSC sized models... Duh?!?
Great scoop. I hope it's not too big... Proportions (body:lens) make it look quite big... Still exciting times for m43 users.... So long as it's nota as disappointing as the OM5
@ They can be. I love the 12Mp sensor on the Nikon D700, and the 8Mp CCD sensor on the Sony F828, but being realistic those older sensors have lower ISO capabilities and most new buyers demand newer standards. For anyone working, the minimum standard for stock photography and most jobs is now 25Mp so those older cameras are good for personal pleasure, but don't cut it when it comes to sales in store, and any professional use. Very few buyers accept anything less than 25Mp these days, and the camera has to sell in order to make a profit for the company.
I've been thinking for a short while, that it would be cool to see some new versions of Olympus' film cameras, or even a digital version and they are doing it. However it is funny how they are not the only ones doing this.
OM is really missing what the market lacks and wants. Retro Range finder model to fulfill the unfulfilled x100 demand The middle hump models have plenty of rivals already, Nikon Zf, Zfc, and many models of Fujifilm
You can do that in a drone. Because the lens will be permanently focused to infinity, you can use a wide-open aperture (anything wider than f/2.0) on a short focal length and not be constrained by diffraction limits in the same way you would be using a handheld camera focusing a few meters away. On a camera, with a sensor 17.3mm x 13mm, then the pixel ceiling is really 20-24MP.
I’m afraid this is not it. The camera seems to occupy the same spot as the OM5. The OM 5 already has a retro look. They should have gone for a rangefinder style, because there currently is no small rangefinder style mft camera with phase detect available. Seems like people looking for a small street camera will continue to be disappointed by OM and Panasonic :(
I bet, within a year there is at least one new pen camera. Yes, a tiny PEN-R true rangefinder camera would be awesome. That and a even tinier PEN-M3 would make heaven for OM System future. They actually need an even smaller weather resistant pancake 14-42 mm lens than today's EZ.
I bet the dials could be actual metal. Plastic makes more sense for high volume production but for smaller volume metal works out. This, like all OM cameras, will be small volume - that's why the company was sold off etc.
Nice scoop. Hopefully, it will have good ergonomics. Maybe like the film OM cameras, there will be a control dial on the lens mount. Hopefully a dual hinge design for the rear screen. One hinge for tilt only anf the second hinge for swivel. Hopefully, the sensor and processor from the OM-1. If not a new BSI sensor. Keep the leaks coming.
Tilting LCD instead of fully articulating please. Nikon ZF (and ZFc) along with all the current Oly got the fully articulated LCD, would be nice if the retro camera (other than Fuji) have an easy waistfinder style screen for once. Or maybe I'll just wait until they release a new retro PEN.
Love the idea of having something like the GH5s sensor. Better low light and slightly shallower DOF (not that i care that much about it). If this could be done while maintaining great IBIS it's a winner.
Let's not forget that OMS also said they will introduce some new, weather proof primes, so just imagine an updated, vintage look, "holy trinity" of 17mm, 25mm, and 45mm f1.8 or f1.7 primes! I'll bet at least one of these lenses will be introduced with this camera.
Nice sharing. New sensor is a good step. And I can see the pen-f dial is beside the lens. I hope there is also coming with better film simulation features.
@@robertmills4591 If I remeber it correctly, the first 20 megapixs sensor came on Pen-F, then OM1ii? if the company also see this is something like Pen-f....but just a hope anyway.....
@@bryanshih2281 If it's true that they are labelling it the OM-3, then they are not marking it out as the flagship camera of the brand. That still belongs to the OM1ii. That should tell us that, if they release a camera with a new sensor it will be the OM-1iii, or later. But it will not be in a non-flagship camera. The current stacked BSI live MOS sensor is good anyway, it doesn't need updating.
I am not sure why there is the need to introduce a new tier besides the OM1, OM5 and OM10? I think this could be the new OM5 but with the „new“ for that range sensor from the OM1.
I think, because releasing an OM-5ii now, with an OM-1 sensor and processor leaves little gap between the flagship '1' range and the '5' range and could harm sales of the OM-5, which are actually pretty good. It will also mean when they do get around to releasing the OM-5ii, as it will be positioned below this '3' expectations will be lower.
@thomasa.243 No, it will not be too much for OM System. This new camera hopefully have next generation infrastructure that is ment for all different bodies of the non pro cameras from OM System. They can fit the hardware in different styled body's, like from true rangefinder camera to Pen F, light, mini, om-10, OM-50, and so on. You do have to have different infrastructure on pro and non pro level cameras. And the cheaper non pro level, could still be of true quality and styling. If you take away the EVF, it's a Pen light, if you put a EVF in the left corner, it's a Pen F, if you put a rangefinder in the left corner, it's a Pen-R. Just tweak the style, same electronics.
@@sweden_ove2074 Honestly, I think this will have the OM-1 infrastructure. It will be TruePic X, same sensor, same everything - just in a new body. Later, this same package will be put into the OM-5ii. This way they get to sell the same camera three times (as the OM-1, OM-3 and then as the OM-5ii), just like Olympus before sold the same camera twice first in an E-M1 model, then later in the next E-M5 model. It isn't going to be the beginning of OM System taking charge of the consumer-level cameras from the '10' range down much as many of us may have been hoping to see.
I sincerely hope this won't be an expensive "gem" with lifestyle marketing behind it. I do love Fuji and their commitment to the retro body style, but their pricing is wild, and if OM System were to try and break into that market, they'd fail spectacularly.
Very exciting and I hope someone isn't trolling you with a blurry image of an old Olympus SLR. But if this is going to be released "around the Chinese New Year period", wouldn't there be teasers out by now? After all, CNY is just three weeks away. Or maybe an _announcement_ will be made by then?
At least they've been profitable the last couple years, according to the CEO's recent letter. So they can still develop, and who knows, perhaps even beyond advantageous tweaking.
I'm not the OP, but I read this: The CEO or chairman of OM Sytems sent out a letter, to shareholders or the public. I don't know which. I read it. I recall it gave revenue numbers. It also said they've been profitable for I think the last two years. A web search string of "OM Systems" letter ceo or president or chairman could probably locate it.
Very interesting approach. It will get a better EVF, than is possible on a PEN-F 2 camera. But I personally still prefer a Pen-F 2. I know no one actually "needs" 40 mp sensor. A 30 mp would be more sensible, but the crazy market needs to be shut up, and then 40 mp sensor is what is needed for the complainers. In my preference, a 40p sensor is better for the smaller cheaper series of cameras, and the pro level cameras are better off with 30 mp. 40 mp gives a lot of disadvantages, that I prefer to avoid. But it is still important for the sales. So give this new vintage camera whatever size it will get, and enjoy it as a camera, as a vintage style camera, with what that gives in plus and minus. And place, be proud that OM System makes this camera. Let's hope this camera tech can be easily transferred into pen series cameras. And not only one, several similar, but different and in different price range. I still want this camera to later be transferred into a Pen-F 2 monochrome. OM System needs a proper vintage style monochrome jewel! 😅
Some are saying they want a new Pen-F. I have a Pen-F and love it. Yes, I would like to see a new Pen-F, and I would like to see a new OM1. There’s room for both, and would each be greeted with equal enthusiasm. Oh, by the way. One thing you won’t see is the Olympus name. OM System will most likely appear. My opinion, that sucks. It’s not a name to replace Olympus.
It doesn’t look like a brand leader more like the Nikon Zf to the Z8 or Z9. Me thinks the OM3 will have a similar appearance to the OM2. There seems to be market segment for analogue controlled cameras with a vintage appearance. If by chance it comes with a 40mpx sensor then one can assume the OM3 would have one too.
A new sensor can be a downgraded sensor. It might be a partiallly-stacked 20MP sensor instead of the (fully) stacked sensor in OM-1s. But I am happy that it appears to be having an EVF.
If this is a new camera then by past history, it is likely to be no more than an OM-5 with USB-C in a vintage/retro body copying Fuji with all their retro designs (judging by the image). Or... this might be the OM-5 mk2, although this is less likely. Either way, very unlikely OMS will not do anything that supersedes existing cameras with a new body (again, by past history). The only way I can see this being in advance of the OM-5 is if the OM-5 is set for an update soon as well and I would anticipate the two cameras to basically be identical internally (processor, sensor, firmware etc) but in different bodies with the OM-5 also having weather sealing
If it's a stacked OM5 sensor, that would already come as a positive surprise for me. My guess is the software feature will be somewhere between OM5 and OM1 II. 40+ megapixels is just not a good idea for MFT... apart from all the optical issues that would come from 40MP, it looks like most people who ask for that sort of thing don't even buy lenses that make full use of 20 MP. Besides, even the very best and most expensive MFT lenses struggle with 23+ MP.
@@robertmills4591Yeah, didn’t think I needed to specify „diffraction“ because it seemed too obvious to me. My point was that there are there optical issues (diffracrion), that current mft lenses are already at the limit and that not enough people would be willing to buy lenses that are built for higher mega pixel counts. Nothing more..
@@GLu-qc6vn I mean, as long as I'm not under rain I think it should be fine.. I don't think these camera are THAT fragile. We used non weather sealed electronics all our lives and it was mostly fine. That said, I would pay extra $100 for weather sealing.
@@MorkusReX Your reply makes sense. I'll use cameras briefly and carefully in rain, somewhat covered. But because I take photos when hiking in rain or snow, and hope to do more street photography in rainy Asia, the weather sealing would help me greatly. I recently photographed for about 20 minutes in a wet snowfall, with the weather sealed OM-5 and a sealed lens. Including some video. It was nice to feel zero worries about water ingress. The outside of the camera got wet. I'd would have taken measures to protect the E-P7 in that situation. It would have worked, but caused hassle. it looks just like my omd-em10ii. The idea they would put a new sensor in anything other than the flagship first is not likely. why would there be a market for a 3 when there is 1, 5 and 10 makes no sense there is not enough difference between 1 and 5 to fit another in there in a meaningful way.
No point in 40 mp sensor in m43 the lenses cant handle more than 24mp ! i am no longer a m43 shooter but if i was then i think 24mp and much better dynamic range is more important than megapixels.
Looks like it's just an OM-5 ii. Seems like the market is asking for a Pen-F 2, if they keep the evf hump, I think they will have less folks buying it.....I am one of them. Hard skip on a camera that looks like this video implies.
Why OM-3??? That was a manual-only body with an absolutely fabulous multi-spot metering...it would make more sense calling it the OM-2 unless you know that they are re-introducing this idea?
I'm not interested, why? Because I am the proud owner of 3 x OM1 MkII bodies. That is the best camera they have ever made. It is iconic. Also the lens reads 'OM SYSTEM' not as you say 'OM Digital.'

Camera body design will play a bigger role at this stage as well to differentiate and attract customers.
I assume this camera will not have a stacked sensor, but instead have a backside illuminated sensor, more about image quality, then speed of operation of camera, to keep cast down.
Not sure I want 40mp. I've been using my Fujifilm x-h2 and I can barely tell a resolution difference between it and my e-m1 mark ii.
That's good to know, thank you. Do you get more opportunities for cropped images though, which would be too low res on the e-m1 mark ii?
@@AA-ni3km Honestly, even when cropping, I haven't noticed a huge difference. I still crop rather heavily with 20mp and get good results. Don't get me wrong, 40 mp gives you more, but in my opinion, its not enough to upgrade purely for resolution. I would rather have smaller file sizes and better video specs than see a high resolution sensor in an Olympus/OM body. The 25mp sensor in the Lumix cameras might be a good balance.
Idk why OM can’t make their cameras smaller, they are huge.
E-P7 isn't large. And lighter than the Pen F. OM-5 is lighter too, but somewhat larger of course.
Great move by OM. Makes me care less for a new Pen F and saves me from getting an OM-1 I/II (for which I'd be getting a grip and increasing the bulk).
Specs of IMX492LQJ sensor seem to suggest it is more a video camera than stills camera-oriented. There is no redout mode of the full sensor in 12-bit where it would exceed 17fps. Of course it might be that OM-3 does not have to be fast in stills.
if it's a retro camera no need to be fast at all.
Well done Andrea! Great scoop.
thanks!
@ 👍
Yeah, I am not sure many people know about pixel density and it’s relation to the airy disk: 20MP might be the sweet spot for this size sensor.
@@3dtrip870 Yes, I've seen exactly this conclusion from many reviewers I've read who deeply understand digital camera imagery.
Finally a replacement for the PEN F? I mean I love mine but will buy a newer version on the spot.
If it has a metal body and dials that are etched it would be very interesting, plus of course the threaded shutter release button.
Looking forward to see what it actually is
Aren't all Olympus cameras vintage styled already? What's the difference about this one?
Exactly. Handsome sure, but different, not really. Where is that small rangefinder with an EVF? These can be extremely handsome - see the much loved PEN-F. There is nothing in the MFT market like that and sales data show immense interest in APSC sized models... Duh?!?
Is it possible for you to find out it’s a new prime lenses are f/1.4 or f/1.8 with weather sealed & with new lens coatings.
1.8 please 😅
I wonder if that central EVF dome is a red herring, and we are actually looking a PEN F 2... 🤔 🙏
Wouldn’t that be nice!
Any news on Sony FX cameras?
Great scoop. I hope it's not too big... Proportions (body:lens) make it look quite big... Still exciting times for m43 users.... So long as it's nota as disappointing as the OM5
Great move. Now i just hope om system reactivates Pen series. Rangerfinder camera is en vogue these days.
Yes, the people needs PEN-F, PEN-L, Pen-M and finally a true rangefinder PEN-R
I would be happy with the same 25Mp sensor as the GH7 uses.
@@artistjoh My favourite image I have ever taken was taken on a Panasonic GF1 ! So old sensors can be great! 😊
20mp
@ You are incorrect there. Both the G9 II and the GH7 have 25.2Mp sensors.
@@artistjoh I know because I saw the camera and the sensor is 20mp
Retro Range finder model to fulfill the unfulfilled x100 demand
The middle hump models have plenty of rivals already, Nikon Zf, Zfc, and many models of Fujifilm
It also doesn’t look as good as any of the existing similarly styled cameras.
DJI has a 100mp 43 sensor for the new Mavic drone ;-)
You can do that in a drone. Because the lens will be permanently focused to infinity, you can use a wide-open aperture (anything wider than f/2.0) on a short focal length and not be constrained by diffraction limits in the same way you would be using a handheld camera focusing a few meters away. On a camera, with a sensor 17.3mm x 13mm, then the pixel ceiling is really 20-24MP.
If it's well made , I may buy it for fun. (still hoping for Pen-F)
I( am still waiting for new Pen-F .
Thank you for this information!
I’m afraid this is not it.
The camera seems to occupy the same spot as the OM5.
The OM 5 already has a retro look.
They should have gone for a rangefinder style, because there currently is no small rangefinder style mft camera with phase detect available.
Seems like people looking for a small street camera will continue to be disappointed by OM and Panasonic :(
It's just a rumour, hope they've missed and you're right.
An Olympus competitor to the Panny LX100 line would be cool.
I don't understand why anyone wants a camera without a viewfinder. But otherwise I agree with you.
What we need is a new pen f. Anything short of that is a wrong move
What if this fills that niche? By not having 'PEN-F' written on it, does that really pose a problem?
Couldn't agree more
We started our photographic journey with the original OM-1, which we still have. This speaks to us. A Pen-F would be very popular and welcome as well.
All it needs is the same body as the Pen F, with new sensor and processor. Leave EVERYTHING else the same.
I'm not sure if i'll buy it, but a pen f 2 i'm sure i'll buy
I bet the dials could be actual metal. Plastic makes more sense for high volume production but for smaller volume metal works out. This, like all OM cameras, will be small volume - that's why the company was sold off etc.
I hope not another bridge camera. Please make something like Pen F or Fuji 100X.
It's flat as a plane, ergonomics are already out of the window. Like Zf, user gotta install grip
You can see in the pics there is no control dial on the lens mount.
Tilting LCD instead of fully articulating please. Nikon ZF (and ZFc) along with all the current Oly got the fully articulated LCD, would be nice if the retro camera (other than Fuji) have an easy waistfinder style screen for once.
Or maybe I'll just wait until they release a new retro PEN.
thank you for the news / rumor
Love the idea of having something like the GH5s sensor. Better low light and slightly shallower DOF (not that i care that much about it). If this could be done while maintaining great IBIS it's a winner.
If there is a black version, I will take it immediately.😻
I'd be more excited if OM digital solutions released an actual film camera. They would have the market to themselves. M4/3 is pretty much history now.
There will not be a new senor until the OM-1iii. Anyone thinking it will come in a non-flagship camera is just kidding themselves.
@ maybe, but this would mean that we have 4 different OMs which I think may be too much for OM Digital to handle. But, we don’t know…
@@thomasa.243 You can't grow without growing.
Why OM Digital as I thought it was OM Systems
Very exciting and I hope someone isn't trolling you with a blurry image of an old Olympus SLR. But if this is going to be released "around the Chinese New Year period", wouldn't there be teasers out by now? After all, CNY is just three weeks away. Or maybe an _announcement_ will be made by then?
OM-D's total revenue last year was just north of 40 million. There will not be a new sensor. Expect a tweaked 20
Aside from the fact a new sensor is not needed
@@robertmills4591 Keep telling yourself that...that'll help.
At least they've been profitable the last couple years, according to the CEO's recent letter. So they can still develop, and who knows, perhaps even beyond advantageous tweaking.
Y have a link to revenue information ?
I'm not the OP, but I read this:
The CEO or chairman of OM Sytems sent out a letter, to shareholders or the public.
If only OM would innovate past that old sensor trading on it for fear too long
It doesn’t look like a brand leader more like the Nikon Zf to the Z8 or Z9.
If this was OM-10-tier and size I might be interested.
"Olympus"? I thought they went out of business years ago.;)
and here I was hopeful that this will be an SLR that I could replace my OM1 with :(
They only released the OM-1ii last year. Expecting a new flagship now might be a bit early!
Fuji is king in this domain.
if they go retro style but no shutter speed dial I'll be pretty sad.
So is the shutter-speed dial located around the lens mount like the OM-1 SLR ? 😁
It looks bigger (wider) than OM1, i hope i'm wrong.
Any sign of life from OM/Olympus would be encouraging at this point. Would love to see at least a 25mp sensor.
happy chinese new yaer!
I'll never understand why you can't just wait until the parts are actually on the market. Everything else is picked from the coffee grounds.
Gotta have an em1 type grip even in old style
If it's a stacked OM5 sensor, that would already come as a positive surprise for me. My guess is the software feature will be somewhere between OM5 and OM1 II. 40+ megapixels is just not a good idea for MFT... apart from all the optical issues that would come from 40MP, it looks like most people who ask for that sort of thing don't even buy lenses that make full use of 20 MP. Besides, even the very best and most expensive MFT lenses struggle with 23+ MP.
It's nothing to do with the lenses, it's diffraction. This camera won't have a new sensor. I would put money on it being a reskinned OM-1.
Dual card slots?
I’ve been hanging on since 1978 and it’s nice to have hope. But I’m out of money and already have one foot out the door with a ZF arriving tomorrow.
Looks very promising.. I guess the E-P7 is going back.. well, depends on the price
I have the E-P7, and love it in good weather. It would be almost perfect if weatherized, high-res capability, and phase detect auto focus.
I wiped of the camera and removed the lens on entering a warmer environment, the standard recommendation to prevent condensation.
'Bayer and monochrome sensor version' at 4.01 ...wow!! Does thos mean a possible new monochome only version may be coming???? Wow!! That would be AMAZING!!!! If the pics are true then I'll deff get one as I have and use OM2 and OM4 👌❤❤❤
Control yourself, you're setting yourself up for disappointment!
@ 😆 I can dream! 😴
Om system should use Olympus brand name again.
41mp sensor that doesn't have native in-sensor pixel-binned readout: rolling shutter lag at higher frame rates during video recording, or a nasty crop
Looks nice.
Please don’t have a flip screen. Then OM5 and OM1 are great but I would like an upscale version of an EM10/OM10.
If this camera was a film camera, it would sell better than a digital one...
you are probably right!
Nikon did something alike with the ZfC, I don't know if it's been successful as expected...
I think Nikon is actually smart. They tested the water using Zfc and see the market responses. They ask many feedbacks and design accordingly.
That's a good solution than just gung ho toward Fullframe solution.
Fast forward, Nikon Zf is really hot right now
@@trym2121 Thank you for the info...
like Nikon zf but m43 size, smaller & cheaper i hope.
It will be probably that old 20MP sensor. Don't expect anyting "wow".
it looks just like my omd-em10ii.
Come on OM, give us a digital Olympus 35SP. I still want a pancake 21.5mm f1.8 lens.
No hot shoe?
I expect it's just behind the mock prism in shadow.
Probably a mistake if this is what they release, Pen F looks better
Looks like it's just an OM-5 ii.
Seems like the market is asking for a Pen-F 2, if they keep the evf hump, I think they will have less folks buying it.....I am one of them.
Hard skip on a camera that looks like this video implies.
i hope same om1 battery.
Why OM-3??? That was a manual-only body with an absolutely fabulous multi-spot metering...it would make more sense calling it the OM-2 unless you know that they are re-introducing this idea?
back in the day the OM2 was actually the pro camera and far better than the OM1
I'm not interested, why? Because I am the proud owner of 3 x OM1 MkII bodies. That is the best camera they have ever made. It is iconic. Also the lens reads 'OM SYSTEM' not as you say 'OM Digital.'
Pen f is great.
Trip 35 or Olympus 35 from rf era is good.
Olmpus ax is aprreciatable.
Oooooh, it looks like a camera..
