  • Me & Miles Shaffer stopped at Terry Peak Ski Area in South Dakota on our way east to Midwest Telefest. We didn’t know if we would see any Telemark skiers there, but sure enough we did!
We were fortunate to meet our new friend Barry Seitz. Barry is still rocking it at 79 years young and was kind enough to show us around this great ski area. Terry Peak sports a vertical rise of 1,100 feet with 30 trails and one Terrain Park.
In 1938 the Bald Mountain Ski Club installed a rope tow up Stewart Slope, and instigated the beginning of Terry Peak Ski Area.
Back in those days, club members groomed the slope by hiking horizontally up and down with their skis to pack the snow.
Many of the founding members of the Bald Mountain Ski Club left the area to serve in World War II. Ed Keene, one of the founding members of the club, served with the 10th Mountain Division and upon his return started what is now known as Black Hills Chairlift d.b.a. Terry Peak Ski Area.
It was a beautiful day on the hill and I’m so glad we made the stop.
