You summed up the problem with high level execs and the Boomer generation, in general. They wrote the menu but the younger generations do all the cooking. This is starting to make less and less sense as we approach multiple cataclysmic crisis. We need to change out the leadership.
"Which, in this scenario, you do not like" has been a wonderful addition to my household phrases.

This was hilarious. I also loved his other metaphor from his Repertoire set, where on the day of the vote his friend, who was making him tea, asked him if he wanted the teabag left in or removed.

I can hear Ed Gambles laugh throughout this and I love it. I'm certain its him. Also I would love to point out in Ed's amazon prime Blood Sugar show, you can hear Nish Kumar laughing throughout that one too, I'm pretty certain its him from the laugh, its great.

Ever since someone else mentioned it, I can't help but notice that James matches his clothing to every single set he's on. It's true.

As someone not from the UK, I remember thinking that a second referendum made a lot of sense. Not just because Brexit was stupid in the first place; people didn’t know what they were getting into. And James summed that whole rationale up brilliantly.
It made no sense to have a second referendum. Didn’t make sense to have a first to be honest, but if you start overturning democratic votes because you don’t like the result, that leads to a pretty dark road as history as shown many times.

@@tariqmaketab595 Yes, that was supposed to be determined by MPs alone. Although as luck would have it, Brexit was so difficult to sort out that we had TWO elections between the vote and leaving the EU. So the idea that we didn’t have a say on the conditions of Brexit (or whether we should Brexit at all) after the referendum is demonstrably false.
Don’t get me wrong though, I think the premise of the referendum was absolutely awful. The guy who called the referendum didn’t support change and didn’t propose what would happen if we left. This left a vacuum of BS to materialise where, as Acaster says, others could claim whatever they wanted. The whole mess is Cameron’s fault.
I like that James can make me understand as well as laugh about politics that have nothing to do with me, nor do I care about.

Cannot express how worth paying to watch this entire show was; 10/10 my soul hurts as does any muscle associated with laughter.
I know I mainly comment about him being a sweet boy, but the two things I like best about James are 1. He’s extremely funny, and 2. He’s emphatically not an arsehole.

@Jay Smith He never expressed the desire to be edgy, did he? It’s just a label he got because he was different to the mainstream. And because he was young. But now, like most comics, he’s been absorbed into the mainstream, but the mainstream has become livelier because of him.

James is doing what these so-called 'edgy' comedians that wear being 'cancelled' as a badge of honour think they're doing. As in actually being political and punching at power, and honestly probably risking opportunities along with it. And most of all it's actually funny which most of these 'edgy' figures are not.

I know acaster is obviously building on the foundation of comedy laid down by people like stewart lee, but all the same, it's so impressive how acaster can write such multilayered comedy this early in his career. If you look at Stewart lee's early stuff, It's pretty bog standard stand up.

Acaster definitely banging on the door to join the likes of Stewart Lee and Daniel Kitson. Listening to the Richard Herring podcast with Acaster I think he’s genuinely become sick of mainstream, sycophant audience members and feels if he’s going to empty himself on stage every evening it’s going to be on his terms. Fantastic to see a comedian punching up.

Especially because it was never supposed to be in the show. He had taken it out of the show before things went wrong and managed to save it by remembering a part he'd previously dropped from the show to round it all out with that callback. And does it all so naturally

The audience wasn't supposed to react like that and on the spot he pulled back something that had previously been dropped from the show (there were a lot of bits because the show ran for so long). It just worked well because telling the audience the vibe was wrong had always been part of the show

The only sane choice wasn't a second referendum. The only sane choice would've been for May/the Tories to have had the balls to say we're not gonna do it because it's a very bad, very silly, very stupid idea.

Weird, I see it differently (What a shock, eh?): that plate of shite James wonderfully refers to is parliament's refusal to honor the will of the British citizenry. A second referendum would have been an attempt to subvert democracy-- as you say, about the most insane thing the government could've done-- well, after not heeding the public's wishes in the first place.
Dunno, we outsiders here in America don't have the greatest understanding of all that Britain's been through with Brexit, but we generally were quite astonished that for nearly two years parliament attempted to deny democracy's principles and practices. For us, that was the line, the full story, full stop, all that was necessary to understand.
I mean, what was to happen should the second referendum produce the result wanted? Another referendum to overturn that one, after having set the precedent? Gory, what would've happened had the result come back in confirmation? Yet another to get a result more appealing, an outright admission that the aim was to fully abandon democracy altogether?
Very worrisome how many chose to overlook these foundational questions for moaning about the result, demonstrating democracy wasn't especially well-regarded. Rather than setting to the work of going independent, seems nearly everyone over yonder spent two years doing everything within their power to obstruct the decision and ensure its failure.
We in America have been experiencing the circumvention of our will for three or four decades now, knowing its manifestation very intimately. Surely, most Brits have experienced the same since Reagan and Thatcher, yet when Brexit happened, it's like the whole country went down the path of autocrats bent on ignoring the will of the people.
Have likely said too much on a sensitive, complex topic, these principles of democracy being a joy to write about, recent turns toward the subversion of democratic practices by both our major parties here motivating reflection, action and alarm. Can only hope you across the pond don't ever have to experience what we're presently going through, what will take a generation to repair in re-orientating leadership's priorities and purpose to remove minority rule, majorities even now adopting authoritarian practices to see their goals fulfilled.
Satire is a wonderful steak dinner all should be privileged to enjoy. If well done, its delicious democracy is incredibly superb, divinely inspired preordination.
@@dontpanic1812 The will of the people is a tricky thing. Only a well informed public can make an informed decision. But people were lied into Brexit just about as much as people were lied into the Iraq war.
The referendum shouldn't have happened in the first place because the relationship with the EU is way too complex to explain to people without them falling asleep. And if you can't explain it, how can people make an informed decision.
Plus, the point was never the relationship with the EU anyway. The whole thing was just a nationalist, populist and at times racist gambit, kinda like the US border wall Trump was always shouting about.
@@dcbsmt Yeah, we didn't pick up on the xenophobia so much. After the Scottish vote for independence, we figured Britain was simply tired of paying into the EU and being told what to do. That's why parliament's resistance was so confusing to us-- why wouldn't leaders have wanted something they themselves proposed, especially after receiving the population's public support? Felt like they were saying the public was dumb, couldn't be trusted for being so uneducated.
I get the Iraq war comparison, but it seems in the leadup to the vote all matters of the issue were debated and publicly aired, whereas our media and government glommed onto a single narrative devoid of critique or dissent. Can't tell who's better off-- those who put up a stink or those who went along, distrust and powerlessness being the end result of either.
Seems when governments separate themselves from their people, all legitimacy is lost. To get it back doesn't seem something they're interested in now, their every move leaning into the authoritarianism we each were seeking to avoid. Seems "they'll like it when we win" philosophies have overtaken appeal, persuasion and cooperation now, that democratic practices are being perceived as threatening to party self-interest-- the very worst partisanship that has led to every conflict, famine, war and genocide we've each experienced in our pasts, from Mao to Stalin to that Austrian frucker to Jefferson Davis, Johnson, Nixon and Bush, either by intent or by indifference.
What's weird is we each allow our governments an autonomy they need to get the work done, yet anymore it doesn't seem that work is even being applied in the name of any party's majority base any longer, which is more than worrying. Either they get their act together or we're going to have to prohibit any minority class from governing the majority-- a simple piece of legislation that caps public service by net worth-- say, at 3x the poverty level.
Went long again into interesting woods. Hope you don't mind and are inclined to carrying on, these open conversations being so rare these days.
Maybe, they can only occur when discussing the past, which reminds me: why did Cameron even offer the referendum in the first place? The reasoning is rather foggy, even politically, even after all this time.

James, you are right. Unfortunately this is true about all of democracy. Bait and switch works. The problem is that monomanics gravitate towards leadership positions because the public confuses lack of nuance with clarity.. We need to add a feedback loop to political processes and some accountability for promisses. But that means to evaluate and punish the people in power, which is hard to implement. And without nuance it becomes: "public daily floggings for politicians". Referendum on that?
Something akin to the Swiss political system maybe? But to implement it fully in almost any other country might not even be feasible considering the difference in scale, or maybe not.
The problem is the attention span. That is why bait and switch works and it is also why it never is punished. Else the punishment would simply to get voted out of office. But for that the interest is obviously not there. So perhaps people just get the leaders they deserve.

Brexiteers didn't want an informed, confirmatory second referendum for one simple reason: They knew they wouldn't win once people actually knew what they were getting. If they'd honestly thought they would have won, they'd have gleefully supported the idea.
Not exactly. People don't want to have to win 2 elections to get their party in power, even if a win is a given.
But also the options of a hard brexit and a soft brexit take time to negotiate. So the public can't be provided the plan for brexit until it's agreed on. And if the UK doesn't leave until it's agreed on then the EU will stall negotiations indefinitely to keep the uk in the Eu.
Speaking as a "Brexiteer" we did have an informed second referendum. 2016 was it. The first was in 1977 when we decided to join, what we were told was going to be just a "free trade zone". As the EU morphed into an anti-democratic federal state, that turned out to be a lie, so we decided to leave. One could also argue that the Tories' 2019 landslide election victory, was also a second referendum of sorts. I wouldn't be against a third referendum in the future....if the EU is still around by then.

The EU pushed the UK to activate article 50 and get started, while the UK stalled. When the UK finally did activate, the EU pushed for the UK to come up with a set of compatible desires for the negotiation, while the UK stalled.
When the UK kept stalling, the EU published their own "strategy", letting the UK pick and choose their option, but the UK kept stalling.
Then the EU laid out a workable solution, but the UK kept stalling.
When the UK finally came up with a workable solution (which was basically the original EU one), the EU agreed quickly, while the UK stalled.
When the agrrement was eventually turned down in the UK parliament, the EU kept pushing for the UK to come up with a workable alternative.
When the UK kept stalling, the EU kept pushing, even threatening to stop postponing the deadline. However the UK kept stalling.
When the UK finally at the last minute came up with a solution, the EU quickly agreed and got it done. (Ofc the UK has then decided it won't abide by the agreement they themselves suggested).
The EU had more important things on the agenda, that they had to keep delaying, because the UK kept stalling the negotiations.

It was the UKs weak democracy that gave the Conservatives that election, it wasn't a landslide win.
