- Here is an easy technique for Brassplating steel or iron. We used brass wire brushes on angle grinders and drills to deposit a thin layer of brass on a kettle bell. this technique is often called "Brassing".

Nice
boilled linseed oil and heat to blacken it. Brett is the man
Hydro dip the last kettle bell!
great idea!
Cerakote
Came here to say this. I was thinking hydro dip when u we’re talking about this project on the podcast.
I was skeptical at the success of powder coating a kettlebell when you gave me a shoutout. The curing starts when the kettlebell reaches PMT. that means that mass of metal has to reach 400 if that’s what is called for, at least on the outside. Also getting the powder on the underside would be hard on the setup your using. You may need to use a hook. Still came out ok. Also, did the chrome call for a clear coat? Last thought. Check out PrismaticPowders.com they have 1,000’s of colors. You may find something more to your liking their.
You could try electroplating, or just a chemical bath. I had a lot of fun as a kid dipping everything in sight into copper sulfate, leaving a layer of shiny copper.
That brass lay down was so cool!
The brass wheel plating technique is amazing.
I had no idea you could transfer brass like that, fascinating. Also this is the best demo I've seen of the Displate mounting, pretty clever system with the magnets.
The brass trick is awesome.
These would make excellent door stoppers. I have some old (as in, about 100+ years) cast-iron irons! These were, once upon a time heated on a wood-fuelled stove, and then used to iron clothes. Imagine trying to get that temperature just right! I use these to hold doors open. My french doors that lead to my courtyard need something taller than these irons. I've drilled holes into the pavers to latch the doors down but if it's really windy, these still move around quite a bit and make a horrid noise. I've been using some concrete statues or pot plants until now. Kettle bells seem a lot more convenient.
Copper plating might be interesting given the COVID situation and what I’ve read about copper’s properties.
Cool process, I like the brass look. I can’t wait to see your artwork.
thank you
Впервые вижу такой профессиональный и технологически сложный подход к реставрации гири. Это было круто 👍🏻
Cool stuff Ben! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
This is tight!! That original epoxy finish was ugly 😂😂
Aye wassup man.
I usually fast-forward through his sponsored stuff (sorry sponsors) but these metal plate posters look amazing
My favourite finish is graphite powder rubbed into a base of gloss black spray paint, looks like Beskar from the Mandalorian
You can get pretty close with sandblasting the steel then wire wheeling it
Balls of brass son!
May be some acid etching with ferrocloride and vinyl stencils would look cool.
Probably already on your radar, but electroplating would be cool. I think copper would make a great additional color / finish for this set, not sure if all metals can be electroplated together though so there might be some research involved in that.
I am researching it but so far all the kits are pricey
@@HomeMadeModern @baremetalhw on RUclips does some cool stuff with electroplating. Granted on the MUCH smaller scale of diecast cars, but i believe his setup is homemade.
@@HomeMadeModern Here is his first video on the subject ruclips.net/video/fh8aGasuWyA/видео.html.
There is also a high rated comment on this video that discusses brush plating as a first step instead of using the paint he uses. I think his later videos refine the process but i don't think he did a dedicated video so I couldn't point you to a specific project where it was used.
I will say, copper plating iron is a little more involved. You need to plate in nickel first.
Simple Finish, it really is simple.
yes it is!
Oh for sure gold leaf 🍁!
yes!!
Truck bed liner for the 3rd bell
The brass one is a favorite. I think that plastidip would make a good surface. Perhaps get multiple colors to make it like a Pollock?
Awesome
Flex Seal!
This guy DIY’s!
I had no idea that the brass from brass wire brushes would actually melt and transfer to other metals. I am about to update an old banana lounge and need to clean up the metal frame and legs. I was then going to spray paint this part before tacklling the top soft layer. Once I get any initial grime and rust off, I might have to try using some heat before going in again with some brass brushes. I wonder how well this will work for me? The only heat I could apply would be from either a heat gun or my weed burning tool (uses butane fuel cans). I don't know if these will get enough heat.
By the way, as for your powder-coating experiment, it may be an idea to find someone with a kiln you can use. There are often community art precincts where you can use their facilities for a small fee.
I agree. Hydro-dip it in multi nright colors or airbrushed with a trippy design or spin paint it.
yes!
Wow
I'd love to see a method that showcases a way to highlight the weight lettering. I did a refinish myself with general black, then light on the front-face facet and then hand painted the lettering. The casting was pretty rough, so my hand lettering ended up highlighting the sloppiness of the cast. It works but I wouldn't say I love it. I'd love to see what ideas you have.
I had never seen that brass wire brush technique...so cool! For the third - you could go Mike Clifford style and hydro dip it?!
yes Brett from Skull and Spades showed me
@@HomeMadeModern I feel like he is a wealth of knowledge!
you could try gun bluing. from what i understand its a form of rust? its what gives guns their black protective non paint coating
good idea!
You heat it up then put in into used motor oil or you can use cold bluing.
@@lecobra418 what temperature does "hot bluing" happen at? i would assume it needs to be red hot? i wonder if the oven in the video could work.
Thank you for the video. Why did you remove the bondo? Is there a way to fill in the pits? How do you create a thick, smooth brass coating?
The cast iron needs to get up to about 700F- 800f for this to work properly, more importantly you should understand at what temperature bluing occurs on the metal you plan to add the brass to, it will stick better to a blued surface. You could put this on a grill and heat it using hardwood branches and charcoal. Use a alser thermometer to get the temp up. I would rather use a hand brush than a rotary, the speed is not helping you at all. The wires melt at the tips so a gentle brushing over a properly heated surface is many times more efficient. You can buy a box of 20 brass brushes for like $10. Another thing to note is that this is an iterative process. You can build layers upon layers of brass. Brass is Olygodynamic which means that it holds its own electrical charge and kills pathogens on its surface when left idle, takes about 6 hours or so. This is probably a better way to utilize the brass rather than coating it in a finish.
More Kettlebell! 😋
lol
@@HomeMadeModern Somebody had to do it. 😜
You should season it like a cast iron skillets.
Check out Japanese patination techniques applied to iron tsuba, I think you'll find some inspiration there.
very cool
@@online12plus will do!
Do the small pores on the kettle bell fill in more by leaving the wire brush in one spot longer?
The chrome powder coat may require a smoother surface to show up as chromed. Real chrome requires the metal to be polished to a mirror shine, otherwise any defect will show up.
Maybe play around with a patina and rust on the last kettle bell and clear coat over it. Clear powder coat is nice...
Brass coat and then patina
⚫🔴🔺️Super channel, cool ideas. I hope that one day I took this level, I will have such a large audience. Best regards⚫🔴🔻
Electroplate the last one with cooper.
Leather wrap?
A mirror finish would be so cool- think Anish Kapoor or Jeff Koons works. Or something crazy like glow-in-the-dark.
Thank you for the video. That brass transfer is interesting. Please be carefull with those long hairs hanging next to running angle grinder.
You should use vinegar and steel wool to make it look ratchet\worn AF. Then do a quick wipe and clear over it.
Cover it in epoxy with pigment added
I like it
Substandard kettlebells.
How about blueing? It might not be called that but I mean that blue-black finish that goes on gun barrels.
Video sound levels are low. Had to crank up the volume. ... Brass looks really good!
I recently made a kettlebell out of plywood, maybe paint it to look like wood grain?
DIWHY?
Flame spray?
Marbelling!!
Polish it!
How ceramic paint w glaze already in paint
Why not cover the third cattle bell in red shiny liquid rubber. Looks like a cherry with a handle.
Liquid rubber handle for sure!
Do you still own a stake in Maker Brand? I have heard other youtubers getting in trouble for promoting products they have a financial interest in without disclosing it.
Either way think the brass kettlebell turned out great.
Easier to just burn off the paint.
I will try!
Hey - the metal prints - how do you think they'd do outside? I've been looking for some art for my patio that is uncovered but can't find anything I LOVE. Thought this might be a great way to get the art I want.
I did see on their FAQ's that they don't recommend in a wet area as the humidity may effect the magnets.
‼️❗15 lb = 6,804 kg ❗‼️
p.s. normal units for whole other world😅
Silicone or some other rubber.
Let the other one develop a good rust then seal it in :)
At 7:05 you have a mistake you forgot to edit out. Maybe you want to take the video down and edit it
oops! oh well
HomeMadeModern actually if you are interested I think you can cut that part out in the youtube online built in editor and not need to re-upload a new file.
very quiet audio
Anodize it!:)
Blue it
I agree. Brett can tell you what bluing liquid to use. Then wax and polish the kettle bell as a protective finish.
Flock it!
I love you. Please don't buy from Amazon.
Why would anyone want to plate a kettlebell?
the old finish is much better, WHY?????????????????
Copperplate the other one
First
Great ideas , but keep it simple stupid... 😁👍
So what was the point of this video ?
Hey. I know this totally unrelated to this video. I love your videos! Can you please make a collaboration with Epic Gardening? He just got his new place and it would be awesome if you could help him out. BIG FAN!!!
