My first teaching job was at St. Martin of Tours School in Buffalo. Veterans Day (Rememberance Day), November 11 was a day off from school. The pastor of the parish and by extension the school took great delight in pointing out that we always had a day off for our Patron Saint.
My Name Is Martin Rodriguez and I'm Named After My Blessed and Holy Patron Saint Martin of Tours. It's A Name Worthy To Live Upright and Circumspect As I'm A Byzantine Rite Eastern Orthodox ☦️, Having Recently Converted From Latin Rite Roman Catholicism. Thank Almighty God In The Name of The Father and of The Son and of The Holy Spirit, For This Awesome Possom Video On My Blessed and Holy Patron Saint Martin of Tours.
As one training to, God-willing, serve as a clinical chaplain I was blessed by your discussion of the history/etymology of chaplaincy. This channel is a wonderful representation of Orthodox Christianity's beauty, evangelism, and hospitality. May it continue to be blessed!
We had a St Martin lamp Procession in the local University this year. A few years ago I visited Tour and was able to pray at his shrine. Keep up the good work!
Here in Denmark we commemorate Martin of Tours on the 11th of november (that's today) by feasting on duck (since geese were too big for out kitchens and aren't traditionally eaten here - but Danes love duck :P) we do however call it "mortenaften" (Morten's evening)
Nice story telling Yesterday we were Blessed to go to a Church not far away called Saint Martin of Tours ❤️ we even held the keys to the Church ❤️🙏💃🕺🇺🇸
That's fascinating about the etymology of chapel and chaplain. With the Latin for chapel being capella, I would suppose our English word acapella is from the same origin - i would guess meaning "in the manner of those who sing in the capella". As a singer, and a Christian, that's a thought that pleases me
My parish is named for Martin of Tours and is located in a little town called Martinsville (though the name of the town isn't related to Saint Martin, oddly enough.) I found a lot of interesting connections once I came to Christ, like the fact that one of my family names is actually Chappell... I've seen a LOT of God's intercession in my life and heard His voice. Once you know that THAT power is there and that there IS purpose to everything, you don't go back. It was the best and most fearful moment of my life, for which I am eternally grateful.
St. Martin of Tours is my patronal saint. The story of the cloak and the miracle thereafter was the reason I chose this holy man as my beloved saint. I am constantly in need of the reminder to be merciful and generous to my neighbor. Holy Father Martin, merciful saint of Tours, pray to God for us!
I'm not Christian, but I was never taught anything else than the very basics of the story, which is him taking the cloak, cutting it in half and giving it to a homeless person, I was never taught the detail of cloaks being thick, or expensive, or the fact that he slept outside that night and that he helped the beggar with the fire. I always assumed he trotted past him on his horse, gave the beggar a thin half of his cloak and continued onward, that's what I assumed from the picture we always saw.
I do have a request as a new convert. I would love to know more about Name days. I feel like many people don't really talk about it and it various so much between countries and Churches. Its almost a tradition that should be encouraged to honor our saints.
Thanks, Matrona! Yes it's new and a very comfortable mug to hold. It's available as part of a donation at our Ko-Fi support page: ko-fi.com/s/850e63b0cd
This makes me feel sad. How many times might I have walked by Christ without noticing, simply ignoring Him? :( Lord, have mercy on me, and be patient with me. Help me become better. Break through my cold heart, please. In Jesus's holy name...
Millions, possibly billions we have a feast day on December 29th commemorating "All Orthodox Christians who died as martyrs for the glory of Christ by hunger, thirst, freezing, and by the sword"
@Christian Hopchas Thank you, I was going to figure, if there is a source of basic info on perhaps each one of them while presuming it is somewhat limited and known group. But its more organic and blending in the mythical background, I see. Ye, lets not measure Heavens. ^^
@@setsappa1540 There's a readily available "101 Orthodox Saints" illustrated book with at least a few paragraphs about each of the saints included . I'm sure the Armistice that ended World War I did not just randomly occur on a day known for a patron Saint of soldiers - both in the Western and Eastern Churches. In the United States , November 11 is a Federal holiday called Veterans Day where all of our military veterans are honored .

Thats curious, here in Germany there's a tradition to eat a goose (Martinsgans, literally "Martin-goose") for Saint Martin's day!
We heard this story at primary school, those were the days!
Nice story telling

Noted! We should all definitely be celebrating name days, and a lot more saints days. It just adds so much to our year and our life in Christ!
What an amazing story.
Thank you for the story and the the origin of chapel and chaplain. Now I can expand the story of Martin of Tours to my grandchildren.

You never mentioned that the cloak action took place when Saint Martin was still a Catechumen.
